Video: Juan Williams lowers the boom on Obama

By special request of Ace, who tells me his commenters were buzzing about it this morning. Williams has never had much patience for grievance culture so this shouldn’t surprise. He’s juggling a lot of balls here — the “authenticity” motive, Michelle Obama’s comments, the feebleness of the crazy-uncle analogy, and of course the character question — but it boils down, once again, to expedience vs. commitment. Who’s the real Obama, the guy who shrugs at Wright’s sermons because he needs the racial credibility Wright gives him or the guy who casts Wright out of his virtual house lest the project of healing be impeded? Answer: Both. Whatever you need him to be, that’s what he is. That was Hillary’s point about the “blank screen” a few weeks ago. (See also Kaus.) How do you convince a subset of Republicans to vote for a guy who’s even further to the left than she is? You package him as nonpartisan, “willing to listen,” committed to Hope and Change above all, and voila — you’ve got “Obamicans.” He’s tripped badly over Wright this past week but don’t let that tree distract you from seeing the forest of what a spectacularly shrewd politician this guy is. If he had had the Clintons’ connections, he would have wrapped up the nomination around January 15th.

Here’s video from last year of the Messiah paying tribute to his spiritual guru and close personal friend, whose deepest political beliefs he had absolutely no idea about. Exit question: MyDD’s getting a tiny bit ahead of themselves here, aren’t they?

Whatever you need him to be, that’s what he is. (See also Kaus.) That was Hillary’s point about the “blank screen” a few weeks ago.

The problem is that Hillary is the exact same so who is she to criticize him for being a “blank screen.”

He’s tripped badly over Wright this past week but don’t let that tree distract you from seeing the forest of what a spectacularly shrewd politician this guy is.

No sale.

The guy had a run. But it’s over. A “spectacularly shrewd politician” would never have had Wright in his closet to begin with; would never have set himself up as a demi-god for a fall; most likely would have gotten a little more seasoning before he launched a campaign for president so that there was something solid to fall back on.

He’s an empty suit, AP. I just hope he hangs on to take the Dem nomination. But I’m inclined to think after he takes a drubbing in Pennsylvania, he won’t.

Man, great minds and all…

I swear I made my post and then clicked through and read the MyDD thing.

Honest.

terryannonline on March 16, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Agreed, which makes this all the more delicious. She has litle room to wiggle here overall since there is little difference between them on the issues, but she can hit a homerun on this “Rev” Wright gold mine. I expect to see a very patriotic ad from La Clinton very soon. American flag, apple pie, uplifting music, La Hillary with her hand on her heart. If she doesn’t do this it’ll be disappointing and surprising.

SouthernGent on March 16, 2008 at 6:32 PM

Williams’ comments make a great deal of sense, especially regarding Obama’s use of expediency. I couldn’t agree more.

James OK on March 16, 2008 at 6:33 PM

It’s a little premature to write off Obama. He’s gpt the numbers behind him to get the nomination. And you can bet McCain and the RNC won’t go anywhere near this story. So without Hillary friends in the media keeping it alive, it’s going to die out. Then reporters will start getting that tingly feeling in their legs, and get back to wondering why McCain is so “angry” all the time.

Clark1 on March 16, 2008 at 6:35 PM

I think he’s done, too, AP. The Seinfeldian candidacy about nothing could only last so long. Shelby Steele deserves a lot of credit for seeing this long ago.

There goes BJ’s offer to Obama for veep.

Some simple questions:

Upon whom will Barak H. Obama unleash the hate he has so willingly learned from Rev. Jeremiah Wright?

Upon whom will B. Hussein Obama unleash the hate he has so willing learned from his muslim dad and teachers?

The only purpose of hate is to destroy. He and his wife cannot possibly keep all of this hate inside lest it destroy them both.

Therefore, the hate must be unleashed upon someone else.

Who is that someone?

They really don’t officially need to. The blogs, talk radion, FOXNews, and ABC News (to a lesser extent) are doing it all for them. McCain is doing what he needs to do…look like a president. Going to Iraq was a great move.

It was plausible until Hillary chose Obama as VP? It does allow him to write Rise and Fall sequel, though.

Also, was that Obama sitting at the table at 1:46?

James OK on March 16, 2008 at 6:46 PM

SouthernGent on March 16, 2008 at 6:41 PM

So true. Obama will have to deflect this for awhile. Look for his close personal ties to Wright to be brought to light for the next two weeks, then comes Hillary and PA. What happens to him if he loses PA the same way he lost Ohio?

Huzzah for Obama, Prince of Two-Positions!

(A land off the coast of Fringe.)

The echoing hollow of His Emptiness is getting noticable, even to the devotees.

Keep trying to explain, Barack.

Keep digging deeper.

profitsbeard on March 16, 2008 at 6:50 PM

OK got a great quote. aboutr 22 minutes into that newer Obama video

Quote

Obama “I dont know who told you that reading and writing and Arthimatic is acting white but the Moses Generation has to get over that. ”

He is trying to make the point that older Blacks like Wright are like Moses who led them to the promised land and that Barack is the new Joshua Generation.

William Amos on March 16, 2008 at 6:51 PM

I’ve never been a fan of Juan Williams, but today I became one. His comments that Obama can’t have it both ways, have needed to be said on mainstream tv for a long time, and not just on blogs.

evenkeel on March 16, 2008 at 6:54 PM

I like to think of Oprahbama as the city of Jericho. We’re on our, what, 5th trip around those walls already?

SouthernGent on March 16, 2008 at 6:55 PM

It’s not in the Clintons’ interest to let it die out — unless they already have additional video of Wright making similar statements, but with shots of Obama in the audience. That would be the smoking gun, based on Barak’s statement on Friday, but it’s still a month from the Pennsylvania primary.

In that case, letting it die out now, only to leak the new video in four weeks when it would tremendously affect the Pennsylvania results, would make a lot of sense for Hillary (and if I were Obama’s key advisory staff, I’d be demanding right now that the candidate let them know if there are any potential video time bombs out there that will suddenly show up on YouTube 30 days from now).

jon1979 on March 16, 2008 at 6:58 PM

The greatest part of that clip is when they cut to Mara Liasson just as she is about to speak up to defend Michelle Obama and you see her draw back, as if she is aware that she will make an absolute fool of herself if she speaks up, and that every word Juan Williams is saying is absolutely true.

gridlock2 on March 16, 2008 at 6:59 PM

You’re being far too generous to him AP. He’s a true believer simply willing to “play the game” to get elected so that once he gain real power he can “make changes.” How do I know? Look at his Wife. Is there any doubt she’s a true believer? True believers don’t tolerate apostates.

As for the “Obamicans” how many of them are/were simply Hillary/Clinton haters who crossed over to knock her out of the race? Judging by the commenters here and elsewhere, they make up a big percentage of the crossovers. If it wasn’t for the push to keep Hillary in the race, these crossovers would have knocked her out the race Super Tuesday II.

evenkeel on March 16, 2008 at 6:54 PM

Nor I, as he too often gets sucked into parroting the Dem talking points. But when Juan talks about race, he seems to talk from the heart. And he makes a lot of sense to me too. I have a new respect for him for his thoughtfulness and integrity on this issue.

What is instructional about this is how Identity politics is playing across the liberal blogsphere. There are sharp knives out on both sides, and the rumble is ongoing. Blood in the streets clean up to my ankles.

I was kinda chuckling about the comparisons to Chicago in ‘68 (picturing balding hippies in their beer-guts and birkies and tie-dye) but after surfing some of the fever swamps this morn now I am worried that things could go terribly awry there.

I know, bad news for the dems is good news for us, but this is going to divide and cause further problems in the nation.

I see nothing shrewd here, and it seems to me that he has misplayed this into a spectacular failure. He has idiot black ministers pissed off at him all over the place.

He has an issue that will cost him a million white midwestern votes. And what, exactly, has he gained? He doesn’t even have the 8,000 nitwits from Trinity who stand and applaud racism and radical leftism in the pulpit.

Spectacular? Craptacular is more like it.

McCain couldn’t have picked a better time to go there. Obama is deflecting racism claims. Hillary is diddling over delegates. McCain is looking like a president. Says it all.

Mr. Obama is now in the unenviable position where he is now seen as someone that will be saying anything to get elected.

Never mind that he has been playing the “you can’t touch this” card, and never mind that he has been exploiting DNC politics that have ALWAYS been a divisive coaltion since 1972.

He is not going to be able to dance away from Wright’s association, his wife’s egregious words and his dealings with Tony Rezco. Hillary and Al Sharpton won’t let him…

lpierson on March 16, 2008 at 7:12 PM

I was reading along, saying to myself “Both”. You beat me to it AP, and no one can say it better than you. Juan Williams summed it up extremely well too.

Note to profitsbeard - please post a rendition of what Michelle Obama might be saying to her husband about all this, now.

I agree with Allah here, Obama is a shrewd politician. I think someone who knows how to out- triangulate the Clinton’s is pretty shrewd indeed.

Whatever you needed him to be, that’s what he was.

The future - the annals of one Barack Obama.

Entelechy on March 16, 2008 at 7:16 PM

How shrewd was it to fold his hands across his groin rather than put his hand over you heart like all the other candidates? How shewed was is to make a big deal out of a flag lapel pin? How shrewd was it to allow his church to continue to sell the DVDs? How shred was it to let his wife give speeches with hints about how much she hates America?

If shrewd means giving a good speech with lies he knows “whitey” wants to hear then he’s shrewd.

TheBigOldDog on March 16, 2008 at 7:19 PM

And how shrewd is it to use as your defense that you never heard these words from Pastor Wright? That bit of shrewdness is going to cost him the Presidency.

TheBigOldDog on March 16, 2008 at 7:22 PM

We had it wrong all along. Hillary was talking about “the vast Wright wing conspiracy”. She’s a visionary.

SouthernGent on March 16, 2008 at 7:22 PM

From Mark Steyn:

Why would he do such a thing? I wouldn’t expose my kids to the four-letter ravings of Jeremiah Wright because I wouldn’t want them to grow up loathing their country. I find it hard not to think less of a man who does.

That’s IT. Exactly.

Ex-tex on March 16, 2008 at 7:24 PM

The most telling part is how quiet and ‘nonjudgmental’ the Hillary camp is on this - when the opposition is digging a hole…the Clintons must be high-fiveing themselves.

Entelechy on March 16, 2008 at 7:26 PM

E-

I suspect that Obama is full of barely contained rage over his double abandonment and being left to fend for himself in his racial predicament. (I don’t think his wife is anything but an opportunist.) I wonder if Obama’s psyche can survive this. I find Spitzer’s fall to pale in comparison. I think Obama is destroyed. America’s race relations left him no way out but to be whatever you needed him to be. The problem is, there is nobody inside there. He needs help. And not the kind his wife or the good Reverend Racist have been giving him. I think this is a tragedy of epic proportions.

terryannonline on March 16, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Well I don’t see shrewdness and I don’t see much in the way of triangulation either.

What I see is a vain little man that is gifted at oratory who got drunk on his own wine. In fact, I see the guy as not only not a shrewd politician, but a political neophyte. Seems to me along the way he’s gotten caught up in the whisperings in his ear that he’s special and he can make up a new game, not play by the old rules but actually be the silly sunrise that is his logo.

But of course he can’t. The game is the game it is because people will always be people.

Seems to me that he figured early on he’d sweep ol’ Jeremaih under the rug. He probably figured the media would keep him under there, and even if he managed to get out, Obama figured he could rise up, speak a few mellifluous reassurances, and all his troubles would washed away.

That is not a spectacularly shrewd politician.

It’s a political lightweight is what it is. A head full of hubris over an empty suit.

Typhoon on March 16, 2008 at 7:29 PM

JxD, it is tragic, and more than him will need help, soon. Psycholists are going to be in great demand. It’s most interesting that they can’t blame this on the conservatives. I could never predict the fall of the Soviet Union. This, I didn’t see coming either, both for the Black, and the women identity politics self-imploding. This year is way more interesting than I had envisioned.

I will tell you were I think he has been shrewd….

1) He has convinced people he has better the judgment because he was opposed to Iraq War, even though he was in no position of power to do much either way.

2) He has created himself as a brand.

3)He used his opponents own methods against them.

Wright is a huuuuge stumble, but something was inevitably going to pop the Messiah balloon. Now is when we finally begin to find out how good a politician Obama is.

frankj on March 16, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Barak is an invention of a corrupt political machine and an even more corrupt media. Like all their inventions and fabrications, the ruse is worn out when exposed to light and air. Then just like all the Fauxtography and news stories from Jamil Hussein, scrutiny and common sense trump the hand and we move along to the next phantom.

Typhoon on March 16, 2008 at 7:29 PM

That’s the thing about brands and reputations, they take a long time and a lot of effort to build and can go away in a heartbeat when you don’t remain completely faithful to them. Any brand equity he had is completely gone with all but his most ardent supporters because the messages he has embraced for the last 20 years go completely against what he said claims to stand for now. He’s been shown to be a complete lying hypocrite.

That’s not shrewd. That’s a complete amateur as Typhoon said. That’s a guy who didn’t realize sooner or later his hypocrisy would be exposed. A shrewd politician would have developed a strategy to deal with that inevitability up front. After all, he knew his Church was selling the DVDs…

On policy, I can generally count on disagreeing with Juan.

As others have noted, though, on issues of race & racial politics, Juan’s one of the very few African-American men or women openly sympathetic to Democrats on policy who nevertheless refuses to play the victim game.

BD57 on March 16, 2008 at 7:50 PM

I’ve said it in other threads, thankfully this is the
Liberal party’s mess and I’m glad the race card aspect
that it appears Obama is playing at his leisure is seeing
the light of truth now.

So were seeing the real suit coming out now,and I’m going to tell ya it sure saves the Republican’s from falling into a nasty trap or set-up if Obama was the nominee going into
the general.

The nasty trap or set-up being the Al Sharpton,Jesse Jackson
way of victimization in America and blameing the right.
I really got suckered into this above the fray of Politics
of race,Obama came into this like a song bird devoid of any
race-baiting tendancy’s and then,Surprise Mr Wright came out!

Now it’s no wonder Obama didn’t need Al or Jesse, thats because he had his own game on the go,Obama’s wifes comments
didn’t get that much scrutiny,ya know maybe it’s a slip,
maybe she doesn’t believe what she said,or the media angle
maybe you heard her wrong, now we know thats not the case!

Now Obama’s mentor,Mr.Wright is taking centre stange in Obama’s Political Hurricane, the remarks by Mr.Wright of (GD
America) seem to fit a pattern along the lines of how Michelle Obama speaks of her own country.

The very thing African Americans I truly believe want to get away from, the pandering race baiting talk, and identity
Politics are no different than the AL,Jesse, and Louie Farrakan types.

So much for a new fresh breeze of Hope,Change, and no one
is to blame accept for the circle he keeps.

Amd me thinks theres going to be an implosion within an
implosion within the Liberal Democratic Party, and their’s
going to be a lot of blame and finger pointing to go around
at the DNC in Denver!

Some people might be counting Barack out too soon. Never underestimate the power of victim-hood in the Democrat party. If Barack successfully dons the cloak of victimhood over this then it’s still all over for Hillary.

There are already efforts underway to portray The Revisionist Wright as just a mis-understood modern Martin Luther King, and I do not jest.

This could turn again in a week, so fasten your seatbelts and keep your hands inside the car, it’s going to get even uglier out there.

I wouldn’t start digging Obama’s political grave yet, while I concur that he’s sliding down a steep slope, it’s possible he could recover, he is running in a democratic primary so anything’s possible.

Juan Williams asked the questions I was hoping that democrats would be asking themselves before nominating this guy. There is not a lot known about him and his views, and now that some of that is starting to leak out, every new revelation is worst than the last.

A couple of more suprises and then it will be time to grab the shovel.

Hog Wild on March 16, 2008 at 8:16 PM

Someone discovered this

those early days at the self-described “unashamedly black” church, the future Democratic presidential candidate was moved to tears by a sermon from its activist pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., whom he has portrayed as his spiritual mentor.

Two decades later, Obama himself would be Wright’s topic of the day — but not for reasons either man would have hoped.

At a recent Sunday service, following media coverage of Obama’s last-minute decision not to have Wright speak at the senator’s presidential announcement last month, Wright warned his flock not to believe any reports of a rift between him and the church’s best-known member.

“Barack and I are fine,” Wright, 65, on an out-of-state trip, said in a recorded message played to about 2,000 attendees. “The press is not to be trusted. … Don’t let somebody outside our camp divide us.”

I hope you’re both right. Believe me I hope you’re right.

It’s true that Democrats may just forgive this and/or buy the whole “guilt by association” spin, or, hell, a lot of them actually secretly agree with Wright. So they may just give this guy their nomination.

But if they do, they’re going to lose. Big.

It doesn’t matter what they think of this. If they’re dumb enough to nominate him, please–as I’ve said all along–let’s shut up and let them do it.

The cool, killing thing about this, is that Obama’s whole pitch is that he’s a fresh new face and while he doesn’t have the experience, he has the “judgment.”

‘Hey, while I was in the state senate I was against the war, so my judgment must be good.’

Well, he can’t have it both ways. If we’re to look to his past to see his character in his judgments, this is a guy who made the judgment to hang out with Jeremiah Wright for twenty years.

This is the guy who wanted us to believe he could fashion a new coalition to be the next Reagan?

Yeah. Right.

This ain’t going away. The whole rational for his campaign is gone. And his remaining coalition is pretty much blacks and latte lib’rals; pretty much what McGovern had to work with.

And if the Dems nominate him, he’ll do just about as well.

Typhoon on March 16, 2008 at 8:31 PM

This thing is spiraling out of control on Obama. The only
way for Barack to save his candidacy now is for him to at least partially embrace the “grievance culture”. Obama will have to use the old “secret handshake” excuse. He’ll have to say something like- black church services are unique, very emotional bonding experiences for African-Americans, where some things are said that whites might find offensive but that blacks either wouldn’t notice or would see as totally innocuous. Eventually, someone is going to be able to place Obama at a service where Wright made some “controversial” statements and Barack is going to have to say that he was caught up in this rapturous state of bonding and he didn’t even hear the comment

jimboster on March 16, 2008 at 8:32 PM

I fond the left’s viewpoint annoying yet again. They are trying to claim that Obama should not necessarily be blamed for comments made by someone else. Yes, people should not always be guilty by association. However, when comments lke these arise they deserve far more scrutiny when they come from the leader of an organization that exists to shape how you live your life. If Obama’s security guard, baby sitter or barber said the things Wright has said, the comments would be ignored and Obama would be clean. But these comments came from the man that married Barack and Michelle, the man that baptized his children, and the man that inspired the title of Obama’s second book. Wright is a man of influence, he has had Obama’s attention for more than twenty years.

Where’s the Clitons tax returns, library contributors, records from White House days showing all her experience. Does Sandy Burglar have pants big enough to hide all that or is she going to be allowed to dismiss, disguise, and lie it all away. Heard anything about Norman Shu lately hope hes’ on Arkanside watch.

Between now and November 4th,the Republicans
shouldn’t touch this race situation within
the Liberal Party with a ten foot pole, well
its their mess and the best,ah no comment.

Don’t even allow the left in media try to
sucker a comment from a Republican,period!

Tark on March 16, 2008 at 8:07 PM

Sure it could, but I don’t see the spectacular political talent of Obama on display anywhere. Bill Clinton always had another route, another escape hatch that he could crawl out of. But I don’t see where a twenty year partnership with a racist radical leaves Obama an out, and this is what Juan Williams was pointing out.

I’m not Williams’s biggest fan, but it certainly seems like he would be the first to defend Obama, were there a logical defense to be had. His condemnation is spot-on, and I think it exposes a serious wound to The False Messiah.

Jaibones on March 16, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Word up Juan!!!

Hummer53 on March 16, 2008 at 8:58 PM

If you are REALLY interested in what is going on here see this video link from National Review.

Why does a guy who graduated Columbia and Harvard Law go to the poorest part of Chicago, for no money? Then he joins a Church that would not accept his own mother, and is intellectually beneath him?

Too slick by half.

William Amos on March 16, 2008 at 8:19 PM

There’s no rift because both men realizes that lies about beliefs and intentions must be told to gain power and remake the country. This is proof in my eyes that Wright and Obama had a meeting of the minds that means would be used that would be justified by the ends.

TheBigOldDog on March 16, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Williams nails it this time.

It’s Barrack, Who’s sane?, Obama now.

Juan Williams lowers the boom on Obama

Don’t be naive.

Williams is a snake and a hypocrite.

I know him personally. He talks out of one side of his mouth.

Plus he’s Bit Hume’s and Bill O’Reilley’s Uncle Tom.

Besides, did you see, Hume’s response? Quickly, he praised Hussein.

It’s a game they’re playing on the viewers.

Don’t be stupid.

Don’t believe anything you see or hear on TV or on the Radio.

Don’t take the idiot “pundits” words at face value.

Indy Conservative on March 16, 2008 at 9:45 PM

Little bit of an edge tonight, Indy? I recommend the Newcastle…

Jaibones on March 16, 2008 at 9:52 PM

When this broke two days ago, I thought to myself, Obambi’s all done.

Now I’m not so sure. As Tark said above,

Tark on March 16, 2008 at 8:07 PM

This Obambi’s a smooth operator, and if he seemed a but nonplused on Fox Friday night, don’t be too sure he can’t sweet-talk his way out of the Wright exposé.

It will be incumbent upon the alternative media and blogosphere to keep the heat on. Here’s a start: Obambi was in church when Wright was spewing his vile race-baiting hatred and crackpot theories on July 22, last summer:

Why can’t we edit these posts?

MrLynn on March 16, 2008 at 9:54 PM

Btw, back on Obambi, anyone else notice how bad he is at moving in and out of the ghetto lingo? First it’s “moving”, then it’s “movin”, back and forth. Lying is hard. You always have to stay in character and remember what you said last week.

Indy Conservative on March 16, 2008 at 10:03 PM

Here’s a link to video of someone else lowering the boom on Obama and just about everybody else. I never heard of this guy but he’s got a web page to something called ATLAH. He’s apparently renamed Harlem. Extremely offensive to just about everybody so be warned. The message is really not too bad, just the language the guy uses. It’s another church and this guy is the pastor. I have to admit that some of the terms the guy uses are unknown to me but I had no trouble getting the message.

If everyone falls for this “it was just a cynical political move to earn his black credibility” crap he will be given an out. If he was so politicallu astute he would have known the rev would come to bite him in the butt sooner or later. barry stayed in that church because he believes in the things that are preached in that church and his wife’s comments confirms that. If we all fall for juan’s crap then barry gets on a Sunday morning show , apologizes for maybe being too cynical and gets away with it. The guy is a racist and a marxist and we better be saying it now before it’s too late.

Upon whom will Barak H. Obama unleash the hate he has so willingly learned from Rev. Jeremiah Wright?

My fervent hope is that he unleashes it at the Democratic National Convention. It will be 1972 all over again, baby!

I know Williams, as I said.

Trust me.

In general, it is very rare to find a “pundit” who would tell you the Truth.

There’s always pandering, butt-kissing, seeing where the wind blows and cheer for…, you know that.

I follow closely words and I don’t forget who said them and when. And The vast majority, if not all, of those “pundits” are not honest with the public. They twist and turn. Change positions and make you believe what you want to hear.

If you really want to form an unbiased, truthful opinion on a subject, you have to turn off the TV from time to time, go online, and research.

Go to the sources, not to the “commentators.”

Check the news agencies and independent sources.

If you’re lucky and you know some foreign languages as I do, it will be an advantage, you won’t have to rely on distorted translations or a failure to even mention an event that is happening overseas.

They talked about it but not to harshly then Juan let Obama have it, like he was deeply offended.
