Obama in Indiana: “[T]he forces of division have started to raise their ugly heads again”

A reference to Wright? Doubtful — the ugly-head-raising he has in mind has been happening “over the last several weeks,” a timeline which would seem to point away from kindly Rev. Jeremiah and towards … who? Hillary? The GOP? Or the great mysterious They that’s forever trying to engineer race-hate, lately through the appalling practice of criticizing Barack Obama for shrugging off his spiritual guru’s rhetorical poison for 20 years? By caring that he’s bosom buddies with a hate merchant, you’re letting Them win — and he simply “will not allow us to lose this moment.” So here’s six minutes on MLK, RFK, and why it’s so important not to let the project of American unity be sidetracked by pausing to wonder how seriously he takes that project when he’s not busy running for president. The transcript’s here if you can’t spare the time. Consider it a refinement on Kaus’s post from this morning: Not so much “if it offends you, I condemn it!” as “if it offends you, you’re standing in the way of progress!”
Two lines to watch out for: His reminder that there is no “white America,” a point on which he once seemed to take a different view if Newsmax is to be believed, and the importance of speaking out forcefully “when people say things like my former pastor said.” By “when,” I can only assume he means, “within 20 years, assuming it’s politically convenient to do so.”
Update: As much as some of the left might wish it were so, it’s not just the wingnuts who find this problematic.
Update: I’m not accusing him of not finding Wright divisive; clearly he does or else he wouldn’t have been all over cable last night denouncing the sermons. I’m saying that, given how old the sermons are, his emphasis on “the last several weeks” means Wright’s obviously not one of the dark “forces” he suspects of conspiring against the coming of Hope and Change. He’s referring to Ferraro (and, by proxy, Hillary) and to the media, per what he says here about the supposed cherry-picking of Wright’s nuttier comments and the clips being shown on television. If anything, cantankerous old Uncle Jeremiah’s just being exploited for their nefarious purposes.

Did you read her thesis statements? A little over the top and paranoid about being black in the 1980’s when she was doing well as a lawyer.
Then her not proud of America statement wasn’t directly racist, but there was more there if you listened close enough.

Huh?
It shouldn’t be discussed because you’re tired of it or because all the layers are peeled off and there is nothing left to find? Obama has no policies to discuss we haven’t heard before. They are the same as Hillary’s. I’d say since we’re pretty close to electing a closet socialist who gets spiritual comfort from a toxic racial enviorment, we continue to find out just what his specific value systems are. We aren’t going to find out in sound bite interviews.

I have to disagree a bit. I think Obama knows xactly what he’s doing. I think he completely agrees with Wright. I think he knows that message would be completely unacceptable to Americans and he therefore is willing to peddle lies about being a uniter in order to gain power. I think he cuts deals with Jackson and Sharpton to shut up and keep low until after the election because he knows they are toxic outside the black community. Once in power he would pursue Wright’s agenda with abandon.

If “Reverend” Wright had been paying attention, he would have known that the U.S. has given billions and pledged billions more $$ to help AIDS victims on the continent that gave AIDS to the world (according to epidemiologists): Wright’s sacred “motherland” of Africa.
Of course, acknowledging inconvenient facts like that wouldn’t help sell Wright’s message about how evil white Americans invented and deliberately spread AIDS, or how greedy white Americans do everything possible to keep Africans living in grinding poverty, etc.
AZCoyote on March 15, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Obama’s toast. Attacking White America is no different than attacking Black America. Dividing Americans along racial lines is an ugly part of our history; this is a dynamic that needs to be part of our history and not part of the present or future. Sharpton and Jackson have acted on behalf of the DNC as agents to broker this racial hatred within black communities across the nation. We all know it, we all have looked the other way. As it turns out, this racial hatred has also been kept alive and well within the black church.
No longer can we look the other way. Dividing Americans along racial lines must be stopped now. Any American that brokers this hatred (white, black, brown) needs to be shunned by all. Americans should be judged by their character; their behavior; their integrity…
I’d have to say, Obama’s character is now getting vetted the way it should be. This man’s running for the most powerful position in the world. The MSM has had a year (minimum) to investigate just exactly who this man is; they may have done so, but they didn’t share anything with us. Michelle Obama opened up the flood gates; the Reverend “Wright” has brought on the storm; connections to the worst of people “mob” are now coming out. This man’s toast!

In the “last few weeks”, the Clinton campaign has played politics the same way it always has - the only difference is this time the blunderbuss is aimed at another Democrat.
What’s going on, though, is Obama’s claiming “victim” status - he’s the ‘good guy’ for ‘change’ and all that, but those mean old political types are finally trying to give him the type of rectal exam politicians running for President have received for decades … and that’s just not right.
He’s essentially trying to make questioning / challenging him on whatever grounds out of bounds.

I wish reporters would question Obama on some of the issues raised in Wright’s “sermons.” For example:
–What does Obama think is the primary cause for the high rate of incarceration of black men in the U.S?
–Does Obama believe that the veneration of “gangsta” culture in the black community plays any role, and if so, how does he plan to address that?
–What does Obama believe is the primary cause for the relatively high rate of AIDS (and other STD’s) among blacks in the U.S?
–Does Obama believe that the celebration and promotion of sexual promiscuity in the black community plays any role, and if so, how does he plan to address that?

Didn’t any of the people who are trying to ram Obama down our throats bother to think about the steamer trunks of steaming shite that Obama has attached to him?
The “reality-based community” is a gigantic insane asylum that has about as much to do with the real world as the Land of Oz does. There they all think the Obama’s and their racist pastors’ views are perfectly wonderful because they think exactly the same way. They are racists, Anti Americans, communists who support their allies the Islamofascists in every way they can. Unfortunately for them they are getting a heavy dose of reality this week and it is driving them batty (well, more batty then usual). Their inability to comprehend why this is “such a big deal” only serves to show just how detached from reality they are. After a couple of days of this they are showing their insanity because they keep on trying to toss the race card at any and all who are offended by Obama and his “pastors’” racist, anti American beliefs and are wondering why it isn’t working.
