Video: Jon Stewart schmoozes with Dana Perino

Such a pleasant chat, you’d think she was a liberal. The Pickler/Burnett rule at work? Doubtful — Stewart was chummy with Tony Snow, too. How is it that he’s able to muster a glad hand for the agents of Satan when they materialize before him? You can almost hear his audience thinking that in the long stretches of silence, palpably waiting for their champion to seize the opportunity and let ‘er have it. He never does. Heart-ache.

Fact 1. Stewart had a nice chat with Perino.
Fact 2. AP is hearing voices inside his head.

She’s great here. Her sincerity when asked stupid questions like “Have you ever been asked to lie” pulls the rug out from under his jokes. Well done Dana!

darii on March 14, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Thats the funny thing about Stewert, he actually gives a good interview. He is engaging, funny, doens’t always go for the cheap shots and has some good questions. He is a far better interviewer then most of the people in the MSM.
It does’nt hurt that he is not afraid to poke fun at himself from time to time also.

Wyrd on March 14, 2008 at 3:30 PM

wow, I should have watched the video before posting, its already gone. What is this? Hot air is the kiss of death to video clips?

Wyrd on March 14, 2008 at 3:32 PM

It’s a little like the episode of “Seinfeld” where Jerry’s latest beautiful girlfriend is nicknamed Godzilla because she is, by way of her looks, able to crush all opposition before her. And a lot of liberals are little wussies who will fold up if you call them on their BS to their faces. Because they are unsure of what they really believe, but can make a good living going along with the popular opinions of the crowd.

WasatchMan on March 14, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Tony and Dana are extremely nice and likable people. I have always thought Tony is one of the best in business. Dana seems a bit too soft.

Luckily for her, nobody gives a damn anymore about what Bush has to say.

freevillage on March 14, 2008 at 3:38 PM

I don’t think he folded up. I just wonder why he’d pass up an opportunity to hit her hard when Bush’s evilness/criminality/incompetence is the running them of his show and his audience relishes when he was conservatives on and puts the screws to them. I’ve written about this umpteen times before, as has Ace. This was a golden moment for “clapper” humor. What happened?

Allahpundit on March 14, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Mmmmm, Dana Perino. She’s so perky.

Geronimo on March 14, 2008 at 3:42 PM

She’s Sicilian. Think Stewart’s gonna mess with that?

JetBoy on March 14, 2008 at 3:45 PM

What happened?

Allahpundit on March 14, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Choked like the New England Patriots?

My collie says:

He’s rarely tough on people he interviews. His commentary is much more explicit.

freevillage on March 14, 2008 at 3:48 PM

Stewart does run a respectable interview, inasmuch as he won’t take cheap shots at his guests for a quick applause.

JetBoy on March 14, 2008 at 3:51 PM

He’s rarely tough on people he interviews.

He went after Chris Matthews(!) very hard and I’ve seen him take it to Ramesh Ponnuru, Jonah Goldberg, and a few others. It’s true, he’s generally cordial, and it’s always delivered half-jokingly, but Perino’s no average guest.

Allahpundit on March 14, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Rudy worked hard to get get Bush elected also. >:D

Chakra Hammer on March 14, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Allahpundit on March 14, 2008 at 3:41 PM

He fell victim to her magical womanly spell, AP. Reminiscent of you and KP!

BTW, still smitten?

BacaDog on March 14, 2008 at 3:56 PM

How is it that he’s able to muster a glad hand for the agents of Satan when they materialize before him?

I’ve heard Gingrich of having a similar deference for arch-leftists when he enters their presence…

one notable exception being Jonah Goldberg…

Look, I know I’ll be labeled as an Obama supporter again. Goldberg compares half of this country to the nazis. At least on the surface. I would say a gag reflex is a natural reaction. But I’m a liberal troll.

I don’t think Perino is viewed by anyone as this senior Administration official in charge of making decisions. Like, I could see Tony actually say something during the meeting on policy. I remember he wanted that opportunity when he signed up for the job.

Dana gives me a (perhaps false) impression that her only job is to talk to the reporters. It’s like attacking the lawyer of a murderer. “Yes, he says his client is a nice guy. Yes, he defends him on everything. He’s the lawyer. It’s his job. Lay off him.”

freevillage on March 14, 2008 at 3:59 PM

And Chris Matthews needs to be shot. He’s such an egomaniac.

Yeah freevillage, this isn’t DailyKOS or HuffPost – calling for people’s death is heavily frowned upon here.

apollyonbob on March 14, 2008 at 4:06 PM

Either you didn’t read Goldberg’s book

I didn’t read it. The cover ties together Hitler and half of this country. This is enough for me.

freevillage on March 14, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Yeah, Jon seems to be selective in which Republicans he likes to trounce on. I have no idea how he chooses which he hates more. Maybe he feels the whole HATE EVERYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH BUSH! thing is getting old.

I’ll wait for AP to tell me he can’t see the difference between making a point and a real death threat.

Chakra Hammer on March 14, 2008 at 4:21 PM

mmkay, while we’re waiting try explaining this “VP” position again

In January of 2005 Barack Obama became a freshman United States senator. In March of 2005 Mrs. Obama received a promotion at her place of employment, the not-for-profit University of Chicago Hospitals. Prior to the promotion, she was a hospital administrator earning $121,910 annually. Her promotion provided her with a title — Vice- President for Community and External Affairs — and a salary of $316,962.

There is no coincidence here. There is absolutely no doubt that Mrs. Obama received a salary increase of $195, 052 simply because her husband had become a senator. If one denies the causal relationship between the two events, then one has decided to allow their politics to cloud their judgment. The position of Vice-President for Community and External Affairs did not exist prior to the creation of the position for Mrs. Obama, and now that Mrs. Obama has resigned from the position in order to campaign for her husband, the hospital has not seen the need to fill the open position.blockquote>

Nice Friday afternoon palate cleanser, AP. Dana’s great!

I felt a thrill going up my leg.

Blacksheep on March 14, 2008 at 4:40 PM

Maybe it was the charm and class of Ms. Perino, but this was the very first clip with Jon Stewart in it that I have ever found bearable. I hope he thanked her for showing such mercy.

myamphibian on March 14, 2008 at 4:55 PM

I liked Tony Snow, but she’s gorgeous. Love Perino!

emailnuevo on March 14, 2008 at 4:57 PM

What cracks me up is when guys like this ask if the president will come on their show. First of all… get a grip on your sense of self-worth dude. Second, these guys (I put Olby in the same group) specialize in debating a person who is not there to answer their BS. If the POTUS was sitting across a desk from these guys, they’d crap their drawers.

Allahpundit on March 14, 2008 at 3:51 PM

There’s a suck-up factor on Stewart’s part. If she were the dictator of Pakistan or former President of Mexico he’d have been even more cordial.

Jonah Goldberg hasn’t been head of state or White House Press Secretary. He and Chris Matthews are both strong personalities with books that Stewart found disagreement with. Both those interviews spun out of control but were enjoyable TV.

dedalus on March 14, 2008 at 5:11 PM

I’m glad he’s polite.

freevillage on March 14, 2008 at 5:16 PM

As if he was really going to tear into her. Why would he do that? So that he could never get any guests to come on again?

Bill Brasky on March 14, 2008 at 5:46 PM

But I’m a liberal troll.

An enlightened leftist. Who would have thunk it.

Because having people on like Perino and Snow give him relevancy. If he beats up on them then they won’t show up anymore. The others you mentioned that he beat on . . . competition.

MirCat on March 14, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Jon Stewart wasn’t a crazy leftie before Bush came into office. He was just as rough on Clinton. I often think that one of the few good things that would come from a Dem win in November would be getting him back on our side.

Tanya on March 14, 2008 at 8:32 PM

It is sad people everywhere seem to be stuck in a left vs right argument. Jon Stewart, like his humor or not, makes a living off of skewering politicians and other influential people. What would he get out of skewering the press secretary? Nothing. Just like when Mrs. Cheney was on – his beef is not with them personally, so he lets them ride easy.

It is unfortunate we must categorically make everything two toned – you must be a liberal if you are against Bush or any of his policies :(

A Axe on March 14, 2008 at 8:47 PM

so he lets them ride easy.

Or maybe he knows when he will get an ass kicking.

peacenprosperity on March 14, 2008 at 9:10 PM

Hottest press/sec EVER!

HotAirExpert on March 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM

I likes Dana Perino!

Kevin M on March 15, 2008 at 1:52 AM

She’s flippin’ cute.

I’m just sayin’. :)

ArtLindsey on March 15, 2008 at 3:14 AM

Does Jon EVER have ANYTHING substantive to say or does he just make jokes that hippies will laugh at? I mean he just makes a little joke while Snow or Perino tries to answer the question with SUBSTANCE instead of one-liners. In my opinion Stewart is in WAAAAY over his head with these people so he just falls back on being a comedian.

Bladerunner1701 on March 15, 2008 at 4:23 AM

Stewart wasn’t entirely polite, but he was restrained. His potshots were relatively low calibre, and he let her get in the occasional topper.

He’s a bit of a lefty, but he’ll rip either side of the aisle when they deserve it, unlike “comedians” who are now “humorists” (bill maher), which is just an angry idiot who used to be funny (cf. Franken, Al).

sulla on March 15, 2008 at 3:10 PM

What would he get out of skewering the press secretary?

One hot little shishkebob.
