Video: “Incredible Hulk” trailer

What’s with the sudden trend of nebbishes as superheroes? First Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, now Edward Norton, of all people, as the Hulk? When does Jason Biggs get to play Superman?

Norton likes these beta-male split-personality roles, though, doesn’t he? “Fight Club” is the most obvious example but his first big part, as the schizo altar boy in “Primal Fear,” was all about that, too. Presumably he digs them because they let him show off his range, except … it was Brad Pitt who played the alpha Norton in FC and here it’s some CGI grotesquerie. Range by association? I think his best movie where he was that dude who had 24 hours before he was going to jail. A neo-nazi or something? I forget. In the end, he had his friend beat the crap out of him so he wouldn’t be jailbait right away.

lorien1973 on March 14, 2008 at 12:16 PM

It’s a very definite maybe. Iron Man is a YES!!! though.

RWLA on March 14, 2008 at 12:19 PM

Ed Norton? What happened to Eric Bana?

Neo on March 14, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Iron Man in May. And my boy Hulk in June.

I am in heaven this summer.

lorien1973 on March 14, 2008 at 12:16 PM

AMERICAN HISTORY X is still my fave of his. Disturbing but done so well.

As to The Hulk…the first one was stupid…the second is bound to be too. Ugh. Who can take a big GREEN man seriously? Even when you’re suspending disbelief, it’s ridiculous.

tickleddragon on March 14, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Doc Bruce Banner, Belted by gamma rays, Turned into the Hulk. Ain’t he unglamo-rays! Wreckin’ the town With the power of a bull, Ain’t no monster clown Who is that lovable? As ever-lovin’ Hulk! HULK!! HULK!!

I hate the Hulk. Stupidest “hero” ever. First movie sucked. This one seems to reset the series?

lorien1973 on March 14, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Didn’t they make another crappy version of the Incredible Hulk a few years ago?

Lance Murdock on March 14, 2008 at 12:23 PM

i…iii…iiIIIII …lost the time.

tomas on March 14, 2008 at 12:23 PM

OT–Michelle, Bobby Jindal has been in office for four months. His resume makes Obama’s look like Bush 41’s. Forget it now, forget it in 2012. Just wait and hope for the best.

mymanpotsandpans on March 14, 2008 at 12:23 PM

I didn’t care about this before, the first one was a stinker, but this trailer has piqued my interest. Plus Norton is good.

NeoconNews.com on March 14, 2008 at 12:24 PM

This is not a sequel…This is a “do-over” movie. Ang lees version was terrible and they have to convince me to watch this one. They are doing the same with the Punisher…

JVelez on March 14, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Hulk smash!!!!!

Oh yes, I am there!

pilamaye on March 14, 2008 at 12:28 PM

What’s with the sudden trend of nebbishes as superheroes?

Sudden? Marvel Comic’s whole spiel is empowering the weak via radiation/chemistry.

Peter Parker.
Bruce Banner.
Tony Stark.
Matt Murdock.
Steve Rogers.
Reed Richards.

Look at Thor. When he’s in his alter-ego, the hammer becomes a cane.

yo on March 14, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Call when me they have a new Dark Knight trailer

JVelez on March 14, 2008 at 12:30 PM

I dislike the CGI Hulks. Bring in Lou Ferrigno!!!

p40tiger on March 14, 2008 at 12:32 PM

It will be nice to have a Hulk movie where the obvious next step for the director isn’t gay cowboys.

Let me know if theres a new Star Wars installment on the way..

Viper1 on March 14, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Yeah I was ughhh with Iron Man but the newest trailer sold me.

JVelez on March 14, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Seven Percent Solution on March 14, 2008 at 12:37 PM

Acting, schmacting. A movie like this is going to be all about the monster. The first movie was bad, and I just don’t see this as being an improvement.

I’m sorry, I’m just not buying the CGI. It doesn’t look real. If you want to make a cartoon, fine, make a cartoon. But when you try to put this high-resolution silly putty on the screen with real people, it just looks (unintentionally) funny. Maybe someday technology will make this work, or maybe not, but I don’t think they’re anywhere near there yet.

On a related note, I’d like to see if a modern CGI team could make the Green Lantern look cool on the big screen. Not sure whether it would work, but it I’d like to see them try.

logis on March 14, 2008 at 12:39 PM

OT – St. Pat’s thank-you for late son’s platoon. This may be a tear jerker for some but it’s worth the read.

Seven Percent Solution on March 14, 2008 at 12:37 PM

Yeah, supposeldy there was going to be another one showing Harvey Dent. I thought it would have been shown in the 10000 BC movie, but to no avail. And the dentmobile is coming to DC this afternoon.

JVelez on March 14, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Trying not to bias myself based on the first Hulk movie, but honestly, this trailer doesn’t look much better.

Midas on March 14, 2008 at 12:51 PM

From Norton’s Wikipedia:

Norton has been a strong supporter of Eliot Spitzer, who was elected governor of New York in 2006. He has introduced Spitzer at several campaign events and also rode on his campaign bus.

Heh.

amerpundit on March 14, 2008 at 12:53 PM

That looks impossibly stupid.

Jaibones on March 14, 2008 at 12:54 PM

The bad thing is called “the Abomination”. How delicious is that???

RushBaby on March 14, 2008 at 12:56 PM

I could say the same thing about female action stars. It’s really weird. Take the Terminator show (which I am personally a huge fan of, btw). John Connor looks kinda dopey and beta-maleish, and they cast the Terminator as a girl, who they then dress in tu-tus and/or miniskirts.

It’s a new world out there. Jack Bauer was the last great alpha-male hero out there.

Outlander on March 14, 2008 at 1:01 PM

They had me at Ed Norton and Tim Roth. Awesome actors. I actually liked the other Hulk, I know a lot of people didn’t. This one looks even better. Can’t wait.

tickleddragon on March 14, 2008 at 12:21 PM

American History X? “Bite the curb!” Awesome movie.

Geronimo on March 14, 2008 at 1:06 PM

That last scene looks to much like Transformers meets the Matrix. The last Hulk sucked big time. Why should we expect this one to be different?

Egfrow on March 14, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Ang Lee’s Hulk movie sucked because the writers failed Rule Number One of comic book science: It’s all crap science. Expose the guy to gamma rays and move on to the Hulk scenes. Don’t give us 45 minutes of lead-up explaining exactly how he came to be the Hulk. We. Don’t. Care.

When you keep to those rules, you get: X-Men. Spider-Man (not nearly as good). And Batman Begins. Oops. Wait. That one breaks the rules, because Batman has no superpowers. There was plenty of crap science, though. The Batmobile chase across roofs? Yeah, right, that happens.

Meryl Yourish on March 14, 2008 at 1:06 PM

The bad thing is called “the Abomination”. How delicious is that???
RushBaby on March 14, 2008 at 12:56 PM

And it was created by the eeevil military industrial complex.

ChrisM on March 14, 2008 at 1:07 PM

they cast the Terminator as a girl, who they then dress in tu-tus and/or miniskirts.

That’s because Summer Glau is a dancer. She got to dance in Firefly, too, just like Kristen Chenowith and Ellen Greene got to sing in Pushing Daisies. I love cross-pollination in TV shows.

Meryl Yourish on March 14, 2008 at 1:08 PM

C’mon, the first one wasnt’t all that bad.

Why the do-over? Seriously, is that the only interesting Hulk storyline out there? We grew up on the TV series, y’all. You can springboard off of that for your above 35 audience, and the youts don’t give a crap where the storyline starts.

TexasDan on March 14, 2008 at 1:09 PM

I want the Hulk/Spiderman mash up when spidey had his bulked up powers.

TexasDan on March 14, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Must I be the first one to note that Liv Tyler, having lost her pregnancy weight and (perhaps) hired an acting coach, looks awesomely hot in this trailer?

Anyone? Anyone?

You guys are truly beta males if you’re paying attention to the relative merits of the guy in green versus the other guys in green.

Sheesh.

Anton on March 14, 2008 at 1:14 PM

lorien1973 on March 14, 2008 at 12:16 PM

You’re mixing up two of his movies. 25th Hour is the film where he is about to go to prison (and I agree, it’s one of his best), while American History X is the movie about neo-nazism and racism.

WillBarrett on March 14, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Spoilers, dude, spoilers!

SpencerFan on March 14, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Heh, the last scene in that trailer was filmed down the street from my apartment (Toronto). I’m glad that Zanzibar and The Big Slice didn’t get cgi’d out…I actually don’t care all that much.

I walked by the shoot last summer and everyone was all abuzz because apparently Liv Tyler was around. All I cared about were the completely smashed buses that were stacked in a parking lot nearby.

nailinmyeye on March 14, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Oh – and you are forgetting Norton’s altar ego in Death to Smoochy. Come on, that was fantastic!

nailinmyeye on March 14, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Bruce Banner was always a beta so EN playing him isn’t inconsistent.

DerKrieger on March 14, 2008 at 1:31 PM

WillBarrett on March 14, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Right. Both of those were very good movies, I thought.

nailinmyeye on March 14, 2008 at 1:22 PM

I liked that movie! I think I’m the only one though.

lorien1973 on March 14, 2008 at 1:34 PM

I dunno, I got tired of the whole “power-mad generals not caring who they destroy or whose rights they stomp on to get a weapon for no particular purpose except to get a weapon” thing in the 80’s.

And the bad-guy looks like Mr. Hyde from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

29Victor on March 14, 2008 at 1:39 PM

Well it finally looks like Norton’s underacting will have a context.

tlclark on March 14, 2008 at 1:41 PM

I feel this movie is going to suck as few movies have sucked before.

Vic on March 14, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Norton isn’t just starring; he reworked the script. And he’s reportedly fighting with Marvel over the editing.

The best special effect in an Ed Norton flick is never CGI. It’s his hair. The could have skipped a reboot and gone straight to “Hulk tries to muss Ed Norton’s hair.”

Karl on March 14, 2008 at 1:47 PM

The first movie sucked, bad. This one looks much better. I hope to see it and the Iron Man movie this summer. I looked this one up in IMDB and found that Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark is in this one as well. Possible Iron Man appearance?

Torch on March 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Myself, I miss Bill Bixby (RIP) and Lou Ferrigno.

What did you say? I couldn’t hear you.

RWLA on March 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Looks like a good summer popcorn flick. I agree with the people that say the CGI hulk looks too out of place in the real world though. I mean come on, it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen an 8 ft tall green guy walking around.

kongzilla on March 14, 2008 at 2:08 PM

You still go to movies?

mymanpotsandpans on March 14, 2008 at 2:09 PM

I guess I am one of the few people who like the first movie. Maybe its because I became a hulk fan from the tv series. This new movie does look better.

Is it just me, or does the hulk represent the Green movement? He is the only major super hero that has the US Army as an enemy, the alter ego is a beta male who gets true power when he goes green, and when green he is stoopid.

Conservative Voice on March 14, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Hollywood wants beta-male heroes because they are all postmodernist, de-constructing beta males.

Better than crap science is NO SCIENCE. With NO SCIENCE, the X-Men are mutants because… well, they just are. With crap science, we get Mr. Fantastic channelling *cosmic rays* through a bent rubber hose.

Perhaps, rather than the Abomination, the big villain could be the Obamanation? I’d watch that at the cinema, twice.

q2600 on March 14, 2008 at 2:17 PM

Hollywood wants beta-male heroes because they are all postmodernist, de-constructing beta males.

Well yeah that or it could be because they fit the characters that Marvel created decades ago. Bruce Banner is supposed to be a weeny scientist.

Benaiah on March 14, 2008 at 2:23 PM

Was Tony Stark?

q2600 on March 14, 2008 at 2:24 PM

When are they going to do “Hulk vs Thing vs Juggernaut?”

clark smith on March 14, 2008 at 2:33 PM

They actually had the Hulk v Superman in the comics. Hulk lost. But against the juggernaut or the thing, the hulk is suppose to be stronger.

Conservative Voice on March 14, 2008 at 2:40 PM

I heard there was going to be a Justice League movie out. I’m not sure if Green Lantern is going to be in that one but I’d love for a Green Lantern movie. I didn’t appreciate his powers until the new Justice League cartoons though.

nailinmyeye on March 14, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Don’t forget American History X.

Jay on March 14, 2008 at 3:53 PM

In the comics Bruce Banner is a nebbish. So is Peter Parker. So is Reed Richards. So are a lot of other superheroes. Why? Who do you think buys comics? I’ll give you a hint. Go down to a comic shop on the day the new issues come out and take a gander at the clientele. You won’t see very many football players or other alpha males. Comics have long been a beta male power fantasy.

That said, the Hulk is not a superhero. The Hulk is a giant monster who occasionally does good things but tends to leave a trail of death and destruction in his wake. Which is why Bruce Banner has, on occasion, tried to kill the Hulk and various other superheros have also done their best to get rid of him. A recent major storyline in Marvel Comics was “World War Hulk” in which the Hulk lead a devastating alien invasion of Earth in retaliation for Reed Richards, Professor X, and Tony Stark, among others, conspiring to get rid of him by shooting him off into space to a planet far, far away from Earth and then apparently blowing said planet up just to be sure. Marvel has even shown us a potential future in which the Hulk has killed every single superhero on the planet. The Hulk is not a hero.

Now this does look like an improvement over Ang Lee’s movie. More SMASH, less emo.

Rip Ford on March 14, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Hulk gratified!

http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33980

Blacklake on March 14, 2008 at 4:13 PM

This one maybe better than the first Hulk movie, but that isn’t saying a whole lot though.

Planet Boulder on March 14, 2008 at 4:59 PM

Bill Bixby was not an alpha male in the original Hulk series. He was a tortured soul, a man who made a big mistake and the guilt that follows him around. It’s an enormously complex character (that was wasted with the last screenplay– yuck). I think Norton could make a sympathetic Hulk.

But I agree– the concept of Hulk for a comic book? Sucks. Who wants to hear a guy whine for 12 pages about how he loses control then then starts smashing things. I want a guy who knows what he’s doing when he smashes things!

Nethicus on March 14, 2008 at 5:00 PM

Oh, and She-Hulk? A spin-off of a crappy comic does not beget a good comic. It’s all just varying degrees of bollocks.

Nethicus on March 14, 2008 at 5:01 PM

Whaddaya want to bet that you’ll leave the movie more ticked off than entertained because Hollywood yet again portrayed the US military as the real criminals?

Sugar Land on March 14, 2008 at 5:11 PM

A Tim Roth, Ed Norton throw down? Lots and lots of CGI would have to be used just to get this thing up to normal human testosterone levels. Roth was a scrawny ape and Norton has been a scrawny everything. Not that that is a bad thing.

2Tru2Tru on March 14, 2008 at 5:26 PM

Not that it translates readily into The Abomination, but Tim Roth’s Archibald Cunningham in “Rob Roy” is easily one of the greatest movie villains ever.

Blacklake on March 14, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Between Ironman, Batman, and the Hulk, it seems to me like the Hulk is going to be the weak link for this summer of potentially overflowing awesomeness. But I don’t think it’s going to be that weak a link.

NorthernCross on March 14, 2008 at 8:23 PM

Incredible Hulk looks… absolutely awful. Ang Lee may end up with the last laugh in this case, ironically enough. Iron Man shows great potential, but I won’t believe it until I see it. The Dark Knight, however, may very well be the greatest comic book-to-film adaptation of… all… time. It will be the great film of this upcoming summer.
