A mini-highlight reel via H&C; my favorite part is his Truther version of Pearl Harbor. Some of it’s leftist boilerplate (fighting for peace is like raping for virginity, blabbity blah) but other parts, like the full-bore moral equivalence between the U.S. and Al Qaeda … actually, I guess that’s pretty much leftist boilerplate too.
This must be the sort of thing Obama had in mind when he described the sermons as “kind of rough.” Or rather, that he would have had in mind had he ever heard Wright say anything like this. Which, of course, he never, ever did.
Update: Did he at least read the church bulletin?

Obama’s campaign has run into a major problem. It may not matter in the primaries, but it’s going to hurt him tremendously in the general.
Spirit of 1776 on March 14, 2008 at 10:10 PM
For months, we have been saying that Barack Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright, was going to hurt Obama’s campaign. Now that ABC’s Brian Ross has released videotapes of Wright’s sermons, Wright is front and center in the Democratic Primary election campaign. Is this stage one of the so-called Kitchen Sink that might derail Obama’s path to the nomination?
I hope that every American gets the opportunity to see and hear Jeremiah Wright for themselves- the “God Damn America” rants, the justifications for 9-11, the references to Hillary Clinton as “white” this and “white that”, as well as references to “Uncle Toms”. According to Wright, American is an evil country, and he doesn’t seem to have much use for white folks either. This man is a vile racist who hates his country. This is a man who claims that we invented the AIDS virus to infect non-whites. Christian minister? This sounds more like some radical Muslim cleric preaching Jihad in some London mosque.
Remember also that this is the same man who traveled with Louis Farrakhan to Libya in 1984 to meet with Moamar Khadafi. This is the same man who recently gave an award to Farrakhan. This is the church that emphasizes the so-called “black value system” and other “black principles” that can only tell other ethnic groups that they are not welcome.
Now that the tapes are out there for all to see and hear, Obama has reacted (as he had to) and released a statement today that he repudiates the offensive statements made by Wright. He claims not to have been present in church when these vile things were said.
It is not enough, and it is not convincing.
First of all, Barack Obama has been affilated with this church and this pastor (Wright recently retired) for almost 20 years. He has identified Wright as his mentor and inspiration. The title of his first book, The Audacity of Hope, came from one of Wright’s sermons. Wright married Barack and Michelle Obama and baptized their children.
Obama’s statements about Wright are not only insufficient, but lame. He says that the worst sermons were made when he was not present. C’mon! In his nearly 20 years attending the Trinity Church, he has not heard these rants, as he is claiming? That strains credulity. He implies that only in the past year has he learned of Wright’s controversial pronouncements. He has stated that he only stayed in the church because Wright was retiring. No, Mr Obama, he was your mentor and inspiration-in your own words. You also put him on an advisory committee for your campaign. You and your wife have been listening to Wright’s sermons for nearly two decades. Your explanations do not wash.
When one views the sermons, one not only hears the vicious words, but one sees and hears the wild applause and affirmations of the congregation. What were Barack and Michelle Obama doing during these sermons? Were they sitting there like potted plants?
Recently, Obama explained his relationship to Wright by referring to all the families who have a crazy uncle that they don’t agree with. We can’t choose our uncles, but we can choose our churches, Mr and Mrs Obama.
That leads me to Mrs Obama. In light of her recent speeches and questionable references to her country, I also want to hear the woman who would be our First Lady speak out about Dr Wright and answer the same questions as her husband.
But it is not enough to state that they don’t agree with those statements. Will they remain in this church-and why have they been a part of it for almost 20 years?
In the interest of full disclosure, I had been hoping that Obama would get the nomination out of my intense revulsion toward Hillary Clinton. I even voted for him in the California Primary since, as an independent, I was precluded from voting for a Republican. Of course, I never entertained the thought that I might vote for him in November. I have written that Hillary would have to steal the nomination from Obama since he has the delegate lead and will hold it when the convention begins in Denver.
Yet, at this point, the Democrats may have to bite the bullet and choose between handing the nomination to Hillary-which she could not win from the voters-or allowing Obama, with this odious association, to become their standard-bearer.
So on goes the increasingly ugly Democratic Primary. Just this week, Hillary offered an apology to black voters for remarks made by Geraldine Ferraro about Obama. Who, if anyone, will Obama apologize to for Wright’s dispicable rants?
Now that Obama has denied previous knowledge of Wright’s words, if that proves not to be true, then he is finished. More importantly, is there a hidden side to Barack and Michelle Obama, two people who represent themselves as bridging the racial divide? I don’t know, but I don’t think this man has any business being a US senator, let alone President of the United States.

Well, thank god the Reverend Wright focused strictly on religion and stayed above politics…otherwise, his sermons, if not correctly interpreted, might seem to be a bit down on our country. I’m sure Michelle Obama would agree.

Okay, so St. Obama says he is a member of this church, yet in 20 years he hasn’t read a church bulletin or really heard anything “confrontational” there before?
So, I’m guessing he shows up at Christmas and Easter, and works in the nursery on those days?

This is serious for Barak Obama. Much of America still attends church and realizes that if their pastor was saying anything close to this, they would be at a new church. Also, sitting under pastoral leadership is serious. You may not agree with everything your pastor says, but attending a church is different than attending Elks club meetings. This pastor is Obama’s mentor! This story isn’t going away.

Well…..isn’t that special.
The Ugly American on March 14, 2008 at 10:20 PM
So Barack never heard a thing? Well then he’s too dumb to be president.
And liberation theology is basically Marxism under the dogma that Jesus would have been a Marxist if he lived in the present day–or the social gospel as Obama calls it. The Catholics clamped down on their liberationists because they were revolutionaries in Central America, but it lives on in nuts like Wright.
PattyJ on March 14, 2008 at 10:20 PM
This angry piece of crap makes Louis Farrakhan look like a nice guy.
Most frightening of all are his flock, and their reaction to his lunatic ranting. They listen, question nothing, laugh and applaud. They are in the fast lane to getting nowhere, but of course that’s whitey’s fault. If they had an ounce of self worth, they would stand up, leave the church and never come back.

God, you people are so transparent. When it’s a Republican you bitch and moan that it’s a smear. When it’s a Republican you all pile on just to score a cheap political point on “The Other Side”.
Typhonsentra on March 14, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Obama knew of this rancid rhetoric from Rev. Wright.
The question on the table is why did he allow it go on? Did he believe in some of it? Did he not want to challenge the Reverend and appear to be betraying his race? Did his desire to be “authentically black” lead to his silence, if not acquiesce?
Here’s a man who today speaks of transcending race. Of eliminating the blame game. And yet when he had a real opportunity to practice this approach, he failed.
I don’t believe that Obama embraces the radical anti-Americanism of Wright. Perhaps small bits of it. But not most of it.
He’s a man who knows, or has found, the words of change and racial comity but doesn’t know how to create those ideals. He really doesn’t. Sadly.
Nice lyrics, lousy beat. I give it a “2″.
SteveMG on March 14, 2008 at 10:23 PM
I think you are in error here. Part of Obama’s appeal is his post-partisan, post-racial appeal. Granted, while these revelations will not sway his college-aged or his A/A support, it will give great pause to the independents that will end up determining the election.

I think Obama is toast. No matter how much the Democrat power brokers want the Clinton grip broken they want a shot at the White House more and Obama is not going to give them that now. Fox is running the Wright clips continuously, Chris Matthews was bashing Obama tonight (I’m not sure what kind of sensation was running

Under ordinary circumstances I’d agree with you. Not in this case. I think Obama is losing a lot of support with every clip of Wright that runs. He’ll keep all his far left support most of the black vote but I think a whole lot of middle of the road Democrats/liberal voters are jumping ship right now and swinging to Hillary.

Identity politics prevents it. They’re trapped.

I say still vote for Hillary. She can’t possibly overtake BHO on elected delegates but she needs to get as close as possible for maximum carnage at the Democratic convention.
The best scenario is for the two sides to destroy each other so a large segment of Dem voters don’t turn out in November - hell we might then even have a chance of retaking Congress.

The only explanation for this that really helps Obama as far as Rev. Wright’s comments go really doesn’t help Obama, which would be that — like Bill Clinton carrying a bible into church during the Monica Lewinsky scandal — his decision to attend Wright’s church in the first place was simply a cynical ploy designed to give Barak a chance to develop a political power base on the south side of Chicago.
If you assume that a guy with a name like Obama as a total unknown two decades ago might need a little bit of propping up on the religious side, and that Rev. Wright’s congregation was already popular among the people who would be voters in Obama’s district, then yea, it’s possible Barak wasn’t paying attention to the message, only to the fact that being shown as a churchgoer would help him in future campaigns. Which might save him, as far as bein clueless about his pastor’s venom, but it then ruins his image of being a different kind of politician running on a message of hope, and turns him into nothing more than Bill Clinton circa 1992 without the looming sex scandals.
On the other hand, while Barak may not have been paying attention to Wright’s remarks, watching the tapes makes it apparent they were getting through to Michelle, since they go a long way towards explaining some of her more controversial remarks about being “ashamed” of America and about how mean society in the United States is. Her statements now can be seen as the G-rated version of Rev’ Wright’s tirades, which then makes Barak’s Sgt. Schultz “I know nothing” defense come across as even weaker, unless he wants to throw Michelle under the bus and say only his wife attended church when the hate-fests occurred.

Clearly, he was listening.
SteveMG on March 14, 2008 at 10:52 PM
the funny part is that these self-important pastors LOVE to videotape and promote themselves. So ALL those tapes will be out there somewhere. And as of now, we’ve seen 4 or 5. But as time goes by, there will be 10, then 20, then 30, and it will become increasingly implausible that obama was never there.

it will be fun to wait for it.
