Video: Ronald Reagan, mastermind

A classic from the Hulu vault since I can’t think of anything fresh to say about McCain planning to woo purple-state independents with his maverickiness or the saga of the do-over Florida/Michigan primaries, which Hillary supports if they’re done by mail and Obama supports if they’re not. (A hybrid is no go, it seems.) We’ve all seen this before but it’s been at least 10 years for me; funny, if perhaps not as funny as I remembered, but worth watching for an 11-year-old Dennis Miller and Carvey’s cameo as Jimmy Stewart, which is always hysterical, in whatever context, under any circumstances.

Blowback

One of my top five favorite SNL clips.

Squarestate on March 13, 2008 at 2:14 PM

What SNL didn’t realize is that, to some degree, it was true. They thought him an “amiable dunce,” when if fact he was a skilled tactition.

iurockhead on March 13, 2008 at 2:14 PM

classic..

jp on March 13, 2008 at 2:18 PM

Not sure who I miss more, Reagan or Phil. Treasures both

TroubledMonkey on March 13, 2008 at 2:18 PM

LOL anyone catch the 3 AM at the end. LMFAO

iurockhead on March 13, 2008 at 2:14 PM

One of the reasons I never really judge a book by it’s cover. Never know what you are gonna get.

upinak on March 13, 2008 at 2:19 PM

I saw this when it first aired, and I haven’t seen it since. Methinks this “Hulu” thing is a keeper.

Badger in KC on March 13, 2008 at 2:19 PM

If only SNL was that creative today.

Lance Murdock on March 13, 2008 at 2:19 PM

In the words of a wise man: “I sure miss voting for that man…..”

Think_b4_speaking on March 13, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Phil Hartman was the funniest man on TV for over a decade, and quite possibly the biggest comedy genious of any of the SNL minion. Absolutely miss that face. PBUH.

INFDL on March 13, 2008 at 2:19 PM

That’s a classic SNL clip. Right up there with the one where Teddy Kennedy offers to drive an Iowa voters kids to school!

since I can’t think of anything fresh to say about McCain planning to woo purple-state independents

That’s because there isn’t anything fresh to say. Once McCain assures Democrat moderates that he thinks social conservatives and evangelicals to f**k off, they pretty much all agree with one another. The Democrats are still going to vote for the Democrat, Triceratops still won’t win in November, the GOP is still screwed because of all the idiot McCain supporters who should be ashamed of themselves.*

*I’m talking about anybody who supports John McCain by telling me that I have to get behind him in the name of party unity instead of defending McCain’s positions on amnesty, CFR, junta of 14, anti-fedralist stance on jurists, coddling of terrorists, etc…

highhopes on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

God bless Phil Hartman. He was a character. And Dana Carvey, where the hell has that guy been?
That was when I used to watch SNL every week. Good times.

Geronimo on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Haha. I remember that.

Carvey’s cameo as Jimmy Stewart, which is always hysterical, in whatever context, under any circumstances.

Absolutely!

highhopes on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Why don’t you just vote for or write in whoever you want? Seems simple enough. I really don’t know why you are continually bitching. McCain is what we’ve got, so either vote for him or don’t.

TroubledMonkey on March 13, 2008 at 2:18 PM

God bless Phil Hartman.

Geronimo on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Phil Hartman was a talented and good hearted man. He was taken too soon. I really miss him.

ihasurnominashun on March 13, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Phil Hartman..one of the best. And yea, SNL wishes it even made skits like this at all these days.

j0 on March 13, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Can’t watch video at work, but I tried Hulu last night after AP linked it yesterday, but when I went to play a video, I got a message along the lines of “not cleared for your area”…

Any Canadian HotAirheads out there have the same problem? or is it just another northern problem?

Frozen Tex on March 13, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Sigh. “Unfortunately this video is not currently available in your country or region.” I really like this skit too.

JS on March 13, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Proof that SNL was actually funny, once upon a time.

Hening on March 13, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Carvey has made quite a few appearances on Dennis Miller’s radio show, lately. Sounds like he’s got some projects in the works. He was unwell for a spell, but sure sounded as crisp as ever on the radio a couple months back.

John the Libertarian on March 13, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Nora Dunn was so hot back then. And I sure miss Phil

jed58 on March 13, 2008 at 2:42 PM

And Dana Carvey, where the hell has that guy been?

Geronimo on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

I heard Dana Carvey on the Dennis Miller radio show a few months back (I think it was a re-broadcast.) He had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes! You can get part of the segment as a free download on iTunes under Dennis Miller Podcasts.

ITmonkey on March 13, 2008 at 2:43 PM

Every year people pine for when SNL was funny.

At the time everyone thinks it sucks, but 5 years later “remember when it was funny?”

Go out and get the first season of SNL. Not funny. They had the muppets for heaven’s sake!

tlynch001 on March 13, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Roland Martin just published a column explaining why a do-over is ridiculous. It is worthy a check out at .

Move to Alaska… Same great chill, less taxes! j/k

Still part of the United States, yet is the B Child of the Nation.

Heck, I was told at a Walmart in FL that I wasn’t an American Citizen and they didn’t accept Foriegn checks. Thank God for Debit Cards!

upinak on March 13, 2008 at 3:03 PM

That reminds me of the time SNL was good.

regal on March 13, 2008 at 3:05 PM

This too is one of my favorite SNL skits of all time.

That’s hi-lar-i-ous!

Of course, I was in the Army with guys that didn’t think I was really an American (even though I was born there!), becauese I lived in Canada.

Classic – both Hartman and Reagan.

It brings a tear to the eye.

juanito on March 13, 2008 at 3:30 PM

You can watch Hulu from abroad if you use a program like Hotspot Shield to mask your IP.

GermanAtheist on March 13, 2008 at 3:32 PM

Does anyone know what season this clip is from or, more specifically, the original air date?

It’s gotta be either ‘86/’87, ‘87/’88 or very early ‘88/’89 since the ‘88 election is referenced.

Illyahkuryahkin on March 13, 2008 at 3:32 PM

This was pretty much the “We Surrender” skit from SNL’s writing crew. NBC wants everybody to forget the fall 1980 season, when Jean Doumanian was put in charge and the show tanked due to its unfunniness, which included skits and jokes in the run-up to the 1980 election that portrayed Reagan as a moron who wanted to blow up the world.

The show was yanked and retooled and Doumanian was fired, but SNL continued to join the rest of the media for the next seven years in trying to figure out a way to take down Reagan’s public image (SNL and its alums like Chevy were still very proud of the hit job they did on Gerald Ford). But neither showing him as evil nor stupid seemed to work, so they finally came up with this skit, showing the dunce image of Reagan they and others had been trying to push all those previous years was only an act. What they ended up with was the show’s most memorable Reagan skit, even if writing it had to hurt a little bit.

jon1979 on March 13, 2008 at 3:36 PM

I was happy to see Lorne return for the ‘85/’86 season.

I still love ‘85/’86, even though most can’t stand it.

Illyahkuryahkin on March 13, 2008 at 3:48 PM

I remember this………. gosh Phil, sorry, I haven’t thought of you in some time. An extra prayer for your children.

and to….

“I saw this when it first aired, and I haven’t seen it since. Methinks this “Hulu” thing is a keeper. – Badger in KC on March 13, 2008 at 2:19 PM”

I agree, but having cable and being at work and all, those commercials really suck……..

Seven Percent Solution on March 13, 2008 at 3:54 PM

Remember the SNL skit “Dukakis After Dark”, in which Jon Lovitz played a Hefner-like Dukakis surrounded by fellow loser Democrats? Hilarious. I’ll have to try to find it online.

WasatchMan on March 13, 2008 at 4:40 PM

Dennis Miller is 11 years old in this?!?!?!

That’s the one! I poked around the SNL page and Hulu and couldn’t find “Dukakis After Dark“, one of my favorite sketches from the Jon Lovitz days. Does anyone know if there’s video of it on any of the other video hosts?

Ed Driscoll on March 13, 2008 at 4:55 PM

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!

charlie36r on March 13, 2008 at 4:55 PM

Didn’t Al Franken write this sketch?

Yoosaion on March 13, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Dang! “Unfortunately, this video is not currently available in your country or region…” That’s Kosovo!

I remember it from the original airing, and from the SNL “Presidential Bash” specials. It is truly a classic.

Tommygun on March 13, 2008 at 5:15 PM

For you Pee Wee Herman fans, did you catch “mylika high, mylika hynee ho” reference from Phil (Captain Carl) when he was on the phone speaking ‘Arabic’?

8straight on March 13, 2008 at 5:24 PM

For Phil Hartman, Rest In Peace…… pick your favorite.

8straight on March 13, 2008 at 5:24 PM

I was wondering WHY that sounded familiar. LMAO

upinak on March 13, 2008 at 6:14 PM

coddling of terrorists, etc…

highhopes on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Coddling of terrorists, you must be thinking of a different McCain as I realy don’t see him coddling ANY terrorists.

Say what you want about his other policy postions (shamnesty, etc) as I agree with most of what you say about him, but McCain won’t be a terrorist coddler.

Liberty or Death on March 13, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Noooo, it’s not available in my region either, which is unfortunate cause I adore Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey (especially as Jimmy Stewart, oh man, so classic).

emmaline1138 on March 13, 2008 at 6:23 PM

Sorry, this is what I meant for Phil….. no charge required. Again, my apologies… and Phil, Rest in Peace.

Seven Percent Solution on March 13, 2008 at 6:59 PM

Didn’t Al Franken write this sketch?

I think Jim Downey wrote it.

Illyahkuryahkin on March 13, 2008 at 7:04 PM

Sorry, this is what I meant for Phil…

None of those videos work. They’ve all been disabled by YouTube.

Illyahkuryahkin on March 13, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Wow, I didn’t recognize Dennis Miller at all. I had to watch it twice to figure out where he was. He really does look about sixteen.

Tanya on March 13, 2008 at 8:10 PM

Well for some reason I can’t get the video to work,
no matter I remember this one quite well.

I love the photo-op of the girl giude,Reagan acts as if he
has memory loss, the girl guide leaves and on a dime, sharp as
a tack he asks how the operation is going,LMAO,then he finds
out that his aides don’t have a clue, exasperated he says I
gotta do everthing my self,in Reagans accent,Priceless!

When he gets into the banks and what time they open,he is
busy calculating i think on the chalk board the exchange
rates, and shuffling the money,I LMAO into tears, that was
when SNL was in its glory.

Phil Hartman was a great comedian and actor, loved his work!

canopfor on March 13, 2008 at 10:42 PM

I’m not sure how links work, but on NBC website
you can access SNL videos and I watched it,so
whoever is good at tech, someone can put the link up!

Geronimo on March 13, 2008 at 2:21 PM

As others have mentioned, frequent (hilarious) appearances on The Dennis Miller Radio Show. And if you come to Denver on April 11th, you’ll see him here, taping for a cable special, I believe.
