Video: Obama’s pastor takes highly nuanced approach to racial divisiveness; Update: More nuance: “God damn America”; Update: Role with campaign?

Just a little gloss for you on the Messiah’s deep, principled objection to the polarizing Ferraro-esque racial rhetoric that drives Americans apart. The fact that it probably doubles as Exhibit A in the IRS investigation of improper church politicking on his behalf is but a happy accident.

Exit question one, courtesy of Tom Maguire: Does the candidate bring his kids to church to listen to this? And exit question two, via Kaus: What, precisely, makes Andrew Sullivan’s grasp of Obama’s post-racial appeal any more or less objectionable than Geraldine Ferraro’s? Click the image to watch.

wright-sermon.jpg

Update: Nothing divisive about this, thankfully. Just a little of ye olde “progressive” Truth to Power.

“The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people,” he said in a 2003 sermon. “God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda’s attacks because of its own terrorism.

“We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye,” Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he told his congregation.

Update: For the record, yes, Wright is formally part of Obama’s campaign, but in a largely ceremonial role.

Kill whitey!

These are always amusing, I especially loved when the two dudes came up and pat him on the back :)

Obama aint rich btw? “Hillary aint never been called a ni###r!” Cant argue with that, I have no knowledge of an event like that happening. =p

Hypocrite. He spews racist hate, then claims that Jesus and he are above the hatin’.

Imagine if this crap is being spewed x 100 every Sunday all over the country. Tip of the iceberg.

August will be interesting as the Dems reap the whirlwind.

This is unconscionable. Such vitriol. Such hatred. As Christian demoninations go, however, the UCC is pretty much “out there.”

This man professes to be a man of God?

It scares me what might happen if Obama doesn’t win the Democrat nomination or if he loses in the general election. The good Rev & his minions will react in similar fashions to how Muslims react to Danish cartoonists.

I love those two goons who come up and slap him on the back mid-way through…

Someone needs to find a clip of Obama at mass laughing at this excrement. Bonus points if he’s doing some cheesy knee-slap or jumping up and down like he’s riding a horse like the rest of the congregation…

He mentions Barack having to grow up in a single parent home. The home he shared with his wealthy white mother.

And this is minor, but if he’s going to be accurate, Jesus wasn’t black. He probably wasn’t white either, but there are shades in between.

Such hate! Oh the rich evil white man. Well that rich evil white man, mostly, rich evil white Democrats have given you poor black folks everything you ask for. Free housing projects which you never care for, never up keep, never mow the grass at, or clean the steps in front of. Free education with billions poured into schools where half drop out and others graduate with 8th grade educations. After school programs. You can get free health care, free food, taxpayer subsidized transportation and handouts galore. And even if your not the most qualified for a job how about a little affirmative action too. All these things and so much more given to you and squandered. Totally squandered. Who the hell is holding you down? You are. You and your Democratic Party, they are holding you down. Making you dependent, and reliant on hand outs instead of a hand up. I’m sick of being labeled as some racist mean white guy. I’m not rich? And I don’t blame anyone, not black guys, or white guys, or red guys, or purple guys, because I’m not rich. My well being starts with me, and my personal responsibility to work hard and contribute to society, not sit around asking for handouts and blaming others because you can’t have a Mercedes and a million dollar house. It’s like my Pop always told me, one half takes what the other half makes. It’s time the takers shut up and make something for themselves….

The Apsotle Paul had a great deal to say about false prophets, charletans, and various “snake oil” peddlers of his day and none of it was very complimentary. It appears that this particular “snake oil” peddler has deceived many, mixing his half-truth version of the Gospel with race baiting vitriol. If Obama thinks this man is a man of God, that doesn’t say much for his judgement.

To be honest here, I dont’ want to condenm Obama for what someone else is saying, especially when they say it on their own. The questions come when it is determined just how close the relationship is; is the ‘reverend’ a close friend, part of the campaign, raising money for, giving individual ’spiritual guidance?’ If any of those turn out to be true, then we have to wonder just how much influence this sort of garbage may have on Sen Obama.

I am honestly more troubled by the ‘close relationship’ with Ayers. How this ef-stick and his wife Dohrn are credible experts on ANYTHING is completely beyond me.

Im sure hillary bought a few of these tapes.

William Amos on March 13, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Note the logic:

Jesus was a poor black man in a country dominated by rich white people. (he is likely being highly figurative here, likening Jesus’ Jewish underclass identity in a country occupied by Romans to the plight of the black man today).

Therefore – we have a God who understands what it means to be a poor black man in a country dominated by rich white people.

Paralleled by:

Barack Obama is a poor black man in a country dominated by rich white people.

Therefore – we have Barack Obama who understands what it means to be a poor black man in a country dominated by white people.

The Messianic allusion between Obama and Jesus – between Obama and God – is not subtle. This is the media’s Messiah narrative we’ve seen all along played out in a religious context: Obama is the deliverer – though, not for our country, for the black people of our country over and against the whites.

nailinmyeye on March 13, 2008 at 10:13 AM

I forgot to add – if McCain feels compelled to distance himself from some of the things Hagee says, and with good reason, why doesn’t Obama feel similarly?

I suppose that is the underlying question of the thread – or, one statement of it.

nailinmyeye on March 13, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Imagine if this crap is being spewed x 100 every Sunday all over the country.

I imagine this racist rhetoric or similar can be heard in many churches and mosques each and every weekend.

dogsoldier on March 13, 2008 at 10:17 AM

Except, Jesus wasn’t black. Jesus wasn’t white. Jesus was a Middle Eastern Jew. I submit that Jesus probably looked more like Ehud Barak than Barak Obama. But you know, that would be historically accurate and we can’t have that.

mjk on March 13, 2008 at 10:18 AM

fourstringfuror on March 13, 2008 at 10:19 AM

There is one dynamic question that needs to be asked of BO in a debate. “What is your position on reparations”. Nobody will ask it directly because they will be smeared as a racist and it would be career suicide. I would hazard a guess that BO’s pastor is for it, I know Louis F is for it, Sharpton, Rev. Jesse…for it. in fact, John Conyers drafted a bill that he’s sitting on (patiently), he’s for it.

Who will ask the question, other than me?

Ban me as a racist if you must AP, somebody needs to ask the question.

I know there is a huge double-standard here, and it’s not just limited to the campaign.

I know I’m coming off as weak-sounding here, or more ‘tolerant,’ or whatever. And yes, this relationship he has with this jerk does bother me, and some explaining, distancing, and denoucing is surely in order to be sure. And I’d feel a lot better if he wasn’t a long-time member of the church.

I just don’t want to knee-jerk automatically tear someone down based on statements they have no control over. That sword cuts both ways, and once this becomes the norm, things go downhill quickly. We all have associations with people that we don’t particularly agree with, or even like, but in some instances we tend to overlook those things for various reasons.

Go ahead and flame away! :-)

JamesLee on March 13, 2008 at 10:24 AM

I suppose that is the underlying question of the thread – or, one statement of it.

My question is: What attracts Obama to this type of sermon?

As a churchgoer I think the type of church you go to says a lot about you.

I’ve been to a church where conservative politics was frequently preached, I didn’t last long there.

Now I go to church where the only political thing I’ve heard my pastor say is something like “I think Ronald Reagan asked the wrong question when he asked ‘Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?’ The government has nothing to do with if you are better off.”

terryannonline on March 13, 2008 at 10:25 AM

Wright married Obama and his bride. Wright was the inspiration for Obama’s book, The Audacity of Hope, and Obama used the title of that book as the theme of his message in his 2004 DNC speech. There may be a few clues for ya. He admires the man. Have you heard Obama repudiate the black racist message of the church? Neither have I.

Rev Wright is an example of the worse that Liberation theology mixed with racism can create. The fact that a presidential candidate supports this man’s ministry is a clear sign of his own twisted theology.

There is no difference between White ministers that preach racial hatred and Blacks that do the same. To give these people and their congregation a pass because they are Black is absurd. Hatred like this also has no connection with the Triune God of Christianity, who sustains His love for all of creation.

No wonder that they let Muslims take the pulpit at this church.

Hening on March 13, 2008 at 11:07 AM

I’m most offended that he uses the word “we”.

There is no “we”, Rev. Wright.

God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

America’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he told his congregation.

ah, the black Ron Paul has emerged…about time.

politically, this stuff with Obama’s church should be more than enough to get the old Reagan Democrats to become McCain democrats by election day.

jp on March 13, 2008 at 11:12 AM

The point in all this, as I’m sure most of you are aware, is that it calls into question the integrity of the main theme of Obama’s campaign. Does this strike anyone as the kind of church a guy interested in transcending racial division would belong to? He’s a fraud.

Sean68 on March 13, 2008 at 11:12 AM

It is getting a bit far along for Obama to make an abrupt turn away now. If he does, the fact it is being done only for political purposes will shine right through after this long, plus he’ll alienate that share of the black voters who agree with Wright. He’s joined with Wright at the hip, till death do us part. We’ll see if either Hillary or McCain have the stones to call him on it. I doubt it.

I don’t understand why people are saying BHO isn’t responsible for what his pastor says. Of course he is, just like everyone else in the congregation is. By remaining members of this church, they are in essence giving their approval to what is said from the pulpit. If everyone left, this pastor wouldn’t have a forum to spread this baloney.

we need some new polls on this stuff and how moderates and blue collar dems view it in regards to Obama.

IF, its very negative maybe we should call off the dogs on crossing over and voting Hillary?

on that note, Derbyshire has a screencap of a Gore 08 bumper sticker that has been spotted.

An IRS investigation would be invaluable to the Obama campaign and Wright. It would support the “whitey is out to get me by using big govenment and this is proof” theme.

a capella on March 13, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Obama has been sitting in church every week for 20 years listening to Wright spew hate with his “God d@mn America”, and he wants to be President??? And Michelle Obama hasn’t been proud of her country until recently? And Barack Obama runs an ad saying that he has the “judgment” to answer the 3 AM phone call?

If Obama really had good “judgment”, he would have quit this church years ago! How can he propose to “unite” the country when he listens to a pastor, supposedly speaking in the name of God, “d@mn” his country?

This story could be Obama’s undoing, in the general election, if not in the Dem primaries. This story isn’t on some obscure blog, this is on ABC News! If this information gets out among a large swath of independent non-black voters, Obama will tank big time. All Hillary or McCain would have to do would be to replay sound bites from Wright’s sermons, and ask whether voters want their President following this man as their “spiritual leader”…

Martin Luther King must be cringing in Heaven right now…

As someone pointed out above, a 501(c)(4) needs to use this video and run commercials with it around the clock. But the important point to make–because Obama’s surrogates in the media will try to make a “guilt by association” defense–is that it’s relevant because it goes against EVERYTHING he’s been saying in his campaign. I just need to know which organization is ready to do it, and where I send the check to.

Sean68 on March 13, 2008 at 11:18 AM

It is indefensible for Obama to have attended this church for twenty years. I would not attend a church where I didn’t feel like my pastor and myself were on some sort of agreement on world views. I would be out in five minutes if I ever walked into church and heard such hatred against fellow Christians.

I wonder if this is Wright’s usual Sunday fare or are these examples of rarity? To me, really, it makes no differnce. More of a point of curiosity at this point.

MarkABinVA on March 13, 2008 at 11:20 AM

How long has Rev. Jeremiah Wright provided the spiritual guidance for Barak Obama every Sunday?

Can a Barak Obama Presidency be removed from a spiritual guidance that he himself has chosen to accept?

Does the destructive influence of this man represent any greater obstruction to a healthy America than what we would hear every day from the middle east?

Speakup on March 13, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Just one question: WHERE’S OBAMA’s WHITE FAMILY?

dm60462 on March 13, 2008 at 9:29 AM

Most of them are dead.

I’ve been on people’s case about smearing Obama because of his heritage and to separate that from issues that matter. This is an issue that matters.

That speech is indistinguishable in tone and content from anything that Louis Farrakhan would put forth. Whether Obama denounces Wright or not is irrelevant at this point because any denunciation would appear to be for mere convenience. Had the senator denounced the man and joined an actual Christian church years ago, it would be different.

There are too many substantive things wrong with Obama. His association with the man and his church isn’t the least of them.

baldilocks on March 13, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Hmmm, makes me question the judgement of a man who would attend these sermons, cite them as spiritual insiration and subject his wife and children to this type of hateful indoctrination.

Alden Pyle on March 13, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Did the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. ever preach anything hateful? Not that I know of. He preached that one day people of all races would walk hand-in-hand together, play together, work together, live together and love together. I think he would be appalled at this clergyman’s preachings.

Wildcatter1980 on March 13, 2008 at 11:25 AM

i’m holding my breath waiting for BHO to denounce and reject this racist hate speech.

Well, I guess that’s it for Vote Sauron. RIP.

Sadly, I’m afraid this church is not the exception. Many urban contemporary churches not only pass collection plates for political donations and allow Dem. politicians to preach from the pulpit, but they also foster racism and “black supremacy”.

Isn’t Obama’s church the one that requires its member to take the afro-centric oath???

Lothar on March 13, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Wright looks like my Uncle Sidney. Are we absolutely sure he really is black?

JiangxiDad on March 13, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Yeah. He looks like a couple of my uncles too. :-)

A word or two about this.

baldilocks on March 13, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Good Lord.

I had to shut it off at the two minute mark.

Although, the two men hi-fiving each other behind the pastor just earlier was almost worth watching the video…

I was waiting for him to say, “forget pinning the tail on the donkey; we gonna pin the tail on the honkey!”

I believe we are well on our way down this road that Dr. King envisioned. We are still on the journey but we’ve come a hell of a long way. Dr. wright appears to think we should make a U-Turn because we took a wrong turn 400 miles ago.

MarkABinVA on March 13, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Admittedly, I’m largely “Bible-ignorant”, but what version of the Bible states that Jesus of Nazareth was black and the temple elders were white?

I believe this is clear evidence of revisionist history carried back to the 1st century, A.D.

This type of virulent indoctrination in the youth of America has produced the intended results: Separatist culture and open hostility for all non-believers.

Seems to parallel the Islamist agenda in many ways and forms…
