Protestors shut down the Senate

posted at 3:43 pm on March 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the Senate had to go into brief recess after a group of anti-war protesters started a loud demonstration in the gallery. Shouting “I will not be silenced!” and “Stop the war!”, they interrupted Blanche Lincoln in a futile effort to end Iraq War funding:

These tactics didn’t work when the war gave Democrats an advantage. Now they only highlight the retreat on retreat that the Democrats have had to make in 2008. No wonder Blanche Lincoln looks embarrassed.

So they interrupted and stopped a man who was trying to end the war in Iraq…by shouting they want an end to the war in Iraq.

I’m really glad I live in a country that wouldn’t have these people dragged by their ankles out of the Capitol, severely beaten, locked up and sentenced to hard labor for a few years.

But incidents like these help me to see how the Chinese government, the Cuban government, the Venezuelan government and the North Korean government see things.

So at the very least, this incident helps foster understanding.

amerpundit on March 13, 2008 at 3:48 PM

My take: They could care less.

It not the message that’s important to these people. It’s the “look at me!” It’s the praise they receive from their like-minded friends. The comaradarie. The pats on the back. The excitement and the adrenaline rush. The stories they get to tell over and over. Getting in the papers, on TV. The “you’re so brave! I wish I had the guts to do that.”

Sure, they hate the war. But without it, without something to demonstrate against, something to hate, they are nobodies living meaningless, empty lives. Like the aging hippies who define the 60′s riots as the best time of their lives, these sorry individuals are currently living the highlight of theirs.

When Bush is gone, when the war is over, they will find someone or something else to hate and publicly demonstrate against. They have to.

An obvious but often unmentioned point… If a group of conservatives had staged a similar event to protest abortion “rights” or illegal immigration, they would have been shot by Pelosi and then tarred and feathered by the MSM as bigots, loons, and inbreds… For certain, they would NOT have been heralded as just good-hearted idealists, as these idiots will be painted by the likes of Couric, Anderson Cooper, and that moronic Olby person.

They are not aiding the cause of peace, they are aiding the cause of al-Qaeda, and they know that full well. What I do not understand is how consciously aiding the enemy in wartime – and in the Senate no less – is not considered to be treason anymore? Why don’t we just say that the word “treason” now means “daffodils”, so that no traitor will ever again have to feel bad about themselves or suffer the consequences of supporting an enemy in wartime.

thegreatbeast on March 14, 2008 at 6:08 AM

I can say with a high degree of certainty that at least 5 of the protesters were homeless people ‘enlisted’ into the rabble rousing.

Anyone here in Los Angeles should go to Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd on any Friday night, you have to hurrry because they wrap up their protests shortly after real people are done, ya know, working to pay for their welfare.

Well, if you go through the crowd of idiots (who block the crosswalk of a major intersection I might add) you will see no less than 15 homeless people standing around listlessly to pad their numbers.

On one occasion I had a Friday off and had the pleasure of seeing them pay these people money to stand around with the signs knowing full well the news trucks would come out to film them.

It’s shameful really especially considering most of the homeless people they enlist have, how shall we say, less than full mental capacity and have little/no idea what the hell they are standing there for.
