Comment of the day

posted at 6:30 pm on March 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I wrote about the “hate the troops” screed written by World Can’t Wait anti-war activist Kevin Theisen in the Berkeley Daily Planet. It prompted this response from Professor Blather. I agree with his assessment of Theisen and his honesty, but be sure to read the entire post.

After listening to this sort of empty, soulless propaganda far too many times in recent years … I finally decided to do something about it. At the ripe old age of 38 and 14 years after leaving the Marine Corps, I’m currently in the process of joining our local National Guard unit. As a commissioned officer this time. Infantry.

If all goes well, by the end of the summer I’ll be a shiny new (yet rather old) second lieutenant. And the unit is deploying in 2009, probably to Iraq, maybe to Afghanistan.

I’m scared. And honored. Worried. Proud. Angry. Happy. All sorts of mixed emotions. But all I know for sure is that 18 months from now, I’ll probably be in the streets of Baghdad, an attorney and writer pretending to be a soldier, with not so pretend bullets and bombs pointed my way.

Yesterday, I spent the entire day at our local MEPS. That’s the Military Enlistment Processing Station for those who don’t have fond memories of such places. (That’s sarcasm, by the way. I have nightmares of my first trip there). But it was different this time. I knew what I was doing. More to the point, I’m older, wiser, removed from all the teenage angst and emotion … so I got to sit back and watch all these young kids.

All these young kids volunteering to go do the fighting. Standing up willingly to become the targets, not only of our enemies abroad, but targets of the simple-minded stupidity of people like those in Berkeley.

The kids I saw yesterday were the ones this gentleman doesn’t support. They’re his mass murderers, his cogs in the killing machine.

And I have just two comments:
1. He’s wrong. He couldn’t be more wrong. These kids are rough, sometimes uneducated, some have lived hard lives … but they’re good people. Your pride in them is well placed. This man is simply wrong. He does not know what he’s talking about. I can forgive his ignorance. He’s just too dumb to know better.

2. And I appreciate his honesty. He is an ignorant, traitorous bastard … but he’s both honest and right in his assessment of “support the troops, not the war.” If you hate the President, if you’re in Code Pink, if you march and protest … you do NOT support me. So quit pretending. The truth is better than the lie.

I’m honored to have the opportunity to go be part of what this man hates. I don’t mind dying for his right to spew such ignorance. But if I can forgive his stupidity, perhaps he can forgive my enormous pride in my country and in the young men who fight for it.

P.B. is a great man. I would be honored to be on a Mission with him anytime. What he said in his post, was how I feel today!

I said it earlier today, but I say it again; I (and most everyone here) salute you!

And a “shout out” to fellow northerner Upinak who is also looking down the barrel of a deployment!

A very deserving comment of the day, thanks again Professor and lets not forget to thank ipinak, another HA blogger has unselfishly decided to re-enlist as well! Here’s upinak’s post:

THANK GOD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE!

At 31, I just re-enlisted active. We may see each other around, and if not… Semper Fi! upinak on March 13, 2008 at 12:38 PM

Thanks is not enough to express my gratitude, but I’ll say it again, many thanks to you both, please keep in touch and come home safe!

Thank you for serving again. There was no need to do this – you served once. But you are a MAN among men and are serving again.

This mother of a soldier appreciates the sacrifice of your time and ambitions and life that you are making.

God speed, God bless you and keep you safe.

These kids are rough, sometimes uneducated, some have lived hard lives … but they’re good people.

I can personally vouch for this. My best friend was a thug from the streets with no hope when he joined the Army. I met him in Columbia, SC while he was training at Fort Jackson. He’s now a grown man full of integrity, supports his wife (with a baby on the way), is a good person and deserves everything that is now his. I told him the other day how proud I am of him. (I’m older than he is, so he’s like my little brother). He seemed embarassed and said he “ain’t done nothing different than many others” have done. Yes, millions of others. I can’t thank them enough. Best of luck to you, ProfessorBlather. And thank you.

SouthernGent on March 13, 2008 at 6:50 PM

Prof Blather joined the National Guard 3/12/08, who looks like he will be going to the CO training (possibly in Alabama) this summer from the sounds of it.

I re-enlisted Army 3/7/08. I will be leaving in Fall for AIT (training) as a unmanned aerial operator, think predator.

I wish him the best of luck… as I know I am feelign the same way right at this moment. Butterflies, kinda nervous, anticipation of what is to come… and who will be elected.

Thank you all… it is appreciated.

PB, I salute you and give you a hearty Semper Fi!!! I would be proud to stand beside you where you went, but I am told I am too old(57). I had actually tried to join the Red Bull Division here in MN…. they laughed. Well, This Viet Marine knows that the Kevin Theisens of the world are cowards and beneath the sludge off my combat boots( yes, I still have my Jungle boots). To all who have taken the step to serve again here at HA you have my gratitude, you have my everlasting camaradarie and you have given this Marine another reason to feel so proud and willing to fight the disease of Code Pink, et al. Be afraid, left coast be very afraid.

thomashton on March 13, 2008 at 7:09 PM

Right there with you PB. I joined the ANG April 2006 at the age of 43. Did one year before I got a medical discharge (I just can’t run like I used to). So I went to Iraq as a civilian contractor anyway. Even the military couldn’t stop me from going. I’m home now waiting for my security clearance to be adjudicated but I guarantee I’ll be back in Iraq before summer. See you there!!!

You’re twice the man I am. Thank you so much.

ALMIGHTY God, the strong Tower and Refuge of thy
people; We entreat thy favour upon the officers and
all who are enlisted in the service of defence of our country, upon land, and on the water, and in the air. Ever spare them from being ordered into a war of aggression or oppression. Use them if need be, as thine instruments, in the defence of our national life and liberty. But restrain, we beseech thee, the greed and wrath of man, that wars may cease in all the earth. Deepen in the hearts of our defenders the spirit of peace; and, for his sake, may they ever love and serve the Prince of Peace, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thank you for being our better, for your willingness to fight/die for our freedom to be free, and stupid. And thank you to all past, present, and future Soldiers, in all capacities.

To write that you are admired and adored, PB, is the understatement of this century. I’ll make sure that hundreds and hundreds read your comment. It should become one of those that traverse the internet, to the joy and annoyance of many. That we can say “we knew thee, here on HA”, and rejoiced in your wit and wisdom, is so humbling.

FloridaBill on March 13, 2008 at 7:41 PM

Men (& women) like this is what makes America proud. Isn’t it funny that every time I see one of ours in uniform they appear happy. And the freaks (like Berkeley and elsewhere) are always angry!!!!! Soldiers put their lives at risk every day for us and yet they still are positive about life and what tomorrow will bring. Democrats, liberals, freaks are all unhappy and yet they have everything one could want right in front of their noses. Peculiar, no?

Professor Blather– I have been admiring your internet posts since way back in the Polipundit days (before the meltdown). Even when I disagreed with your position, you always managed to state your point in a thought provoking & decent manner. I’ve never been a frequent poster anywhere, but I’m a frequent lurker–and honestly, seeing your posts on Hotair made me come back here because I remembered how well spoken you were (from poli days), and I figured if you posted here, it must be a good place.

That said, this latest move by you only proves my instinct about you was right on. You are an incredible person, as are all the men & women who answer the call of the military. I can’t tell you how grateful I am. You are in my family’s prayers.

You guessed right – Alabama it is.

Good luck to you, my friend. Ironically, Wednesday at MEPS I was having a long conversation with one of the other few old prior service guys (he was 37) … and when we were discussing MOS’s, the topic of flying those drones came up. Others joined in the conversation, and we all agreed that it must be a pretty cool gig. For two reasons: 1) you basically get to play a video game and/or fly the coolest multi-million dollar remote controlled plane ever … and 2) you’ll probably be the guy to finally bag Bin Laden.

As for the rest of you …

Thank you, Professor Blather, upinak, thomashton, and Guardian (for your civvy work)…you’re the best of the best in this country. Words do not express my gratitude for your sacrifice.

Code Pink, et al would not be free to spew their filth (or even alive) in many totalitarian countries. How many journalists have died in Russia? Hell, you’d think the gun held to Medea Benjamin’s face in Pakistan would’ve brought that dull IQ above 70…

Anyway, LT. Blather…I don’t recall a post of yours with which I’ve disagreed, and never found one unenlightening or boring! You keep that brilliant noggin of your’n safe by kickin’ butt & takin’ names, ya hear?

upinak, I expect you’ll be assistin’ with that Predator of yours…that’s one sweet assignment you got! I see nothin’ wrong with baggin’ UBL…I always think us ‘wemen’ should violate Sharia any chance we get. Me, I violate it by the second.

Hmm. I think I may visit a friend of mine for a civvy assignment soon…excitement, possible kidnapping because I’m a US cit., travel involved. What’s that middle thing again?
