Canada comes through
posted at 8:00 pm on March 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Canada has extended its deployment in Afghanistan after earlier hinting that a lack of participation in combat missions by NATO partners could cause them to withdraw. Not only did they extend their mission by three years, but they also committed to increasing their own participation. The news comes as NATO prepare to fight an expected Taliban spring offensive:
Parliament voted Thursday to extend Canada’s mission in Afghanistan to 2011, provided NATO supplies more troops and equipment to back up its forces in the volatile south.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government has been under growing pressure to withdraw Canada’s 2,500 troops as the death toll has mounted, now at 80 Canadian soldiers and a diplomat. The mission was set to expire in February 2009.
But the minority Conservative government and opposition Liberals agreed last month to vote together on the motion, which passed 198-77. The Liberal backed the extension after Harper promised the mission would increase its focus on training and reconstruction.
Conservatives had declared the motion a confidence vote, which would have triggered early elections if it failed.
Canada had a right to complain. Only the US, UK, and the Dutch have shouldered the large part of the combat operations, while the rest of NATO has limited their involvement to non-combat tasks. With Canada taking casualties, their citizens began to wonder why more of its allies didn’t have the same level of commitment. France, in a surprising development, agreed with Canada and agreed to bolster its own combat commitment and has tried to get more European nations to follow suit.
Whether or not that had anything to do with it, Canada united — more or less — to send a clear signal to the Taliban and al-Qaeda that they would not run from the fight. Both Tories and Grits voted for the extension, also surprising given the controversy over the question. It shows a level of commitment that demonstrates why Canada has been such a good friend to the US.

Even though the Liberals voted for it, this never would have happened if Harper wasn’t PM.

The DNC probably thinks those are American troops in that picture. But yes, good on Canada and Stephen Harper.

wasn’t there a news story lately that said we would be offending the Taliban this spring instead of the other way around?

Ahh, The True North strong and free. May they give the Taliban the military equivalent of a high stick in teeth in the corner.

CANADA has been doing a fine job in Khandahar.
They forget to give them respect. That is one of the largest and most violent provinces and they have been holding it down.

I commend Canada for staying with us. Sometimes we forget the US isn’t alone in this. I still have nothing but the highest regard for Poland as well…who sent a high of 40,000 troops during the height of combat operations. I’m not sure if they still have troops on the ground, but the Poles were one of the first nations to join us after 9/11…no questions asked.
Many thanks due to all nations who helped, and continue to. But true, many need to come around again.

Give the Auzzies duealso. Even though they changed PMs they have still kept troops in Afganistan

Couldn’t agree more. Instead of financing the projects of Arabian Princes and terrorists, let’s begin sending our money to our friend’s way.
amerpundit on March 13, 2008 at 9:11 PM
That’s a little unfair. Denmark has also had combat troops in Afghanistan and been involved in the fighting. In fact, little Denmark has been one of the most stalwart on an otherwise mostly spineless Continent when it comes to standing up to Islamofascism.

When you think about other countries, one marvels about how lucky we have been. Right now the worst threats we have are economic refugees from the south coming to areas we took from them fair and square in the only full on war we have ever had with a neighbor in 200+ years.
We have a fun country to the north which shares our values and serves asa good cautionary tale against socialized medicine and a good example of very clean streets and politeness.
And we have one kooky, tin pot dictator south of Florida who hasn’t been too mush trouble except for a few months in ’62. very lucky.

Canada are punching far, Far above their weight class. The Princess Pats, the RCR and les Vingt-Deux are world-class fighting forces representing a total Canadian military on the order of 50,000 members. Canada’s tooth-to-tail is remarkable, and they handle their deployment logistics with remarkable skill.
Therefore it’s good to see Canada back in the Anglosphere after that unpleasant spell under Mr. Cretin, and we will all eventually be well served to have had the Canadian NCO core toughened under combat conditions. We’ll need ‘em.

I’m glad they did the right thing but there are still plenty of nutters up here that want us to dump combat responsiblities on the American forces.
On the plus side, I think this is the first time since Korea that our nations have actually engaged in extended combat together. The ChiComs can tell the Taliban what kind of bad news that is.

This is a good decision of their and laudable. But it’s a bit silly how on this site how, whenever a country’s government does something good, there’s talk about how the whole place is fantastic. And when a country’s government does something rotten, there’s talk about how all the people are cowards, vile, &c. (At its worst the word nuke gets invoked.)
But again, a good and noble decision. (Maybe Prince Hal can join a Canadian brigade…)

drunyan8315 on March 13, 2008 at 11:11 PM
Its beyond ridiculous. A mob mentality. That a country should only be supported because its a) winning or b) acting pro-American is arbitrary. We’re always hearing about how European countries are irredeemable because they have some connection to the Holocaust but one of the all-time worst collaborationist countries Poland NEVER receives any blame whatsoever because they’re sufficiently pro-American.

Some stand up comic, I don’t remember his name, but he was hilarious.
Tony737 on March 14, 2008 at 12:08 AM
Ed: There is a little more going on under the surface than this statement suggests. The Grits have been doing everything possible to avoid an election, as the party is low on cash, their poll numbers are down, and there is a growing sense that their leader has little competence. Further, PM Harper, who has shown himself to be quite shrewd on a number of occasions, chose, rather than one of his own MPs, a highly-regarded Liberal, a former MP and one-time candidate for the Liberal party leadership, to prepare the documentation on the Afghanistan mission. It was this fellow who endorsed the extended mission. So when it came to vote, the Liberals really had little option but to support the motion, as doing so would have meant triggering an election they could not win, and it would have meant showing ill-confidence in one of their own party members.

I’ll check it out…the one I’m thinking of was sung at one of the Olympics.
RushBaby on March 14, 2008 at 12:56 AM
The US keeps thinking of this as “Canadians doing us a favour”. Well, not really. If it was only that, I highly doubt Canadians soldiers would be going anywhere.
Canadians think of this as a continuation of a long Canadian tradition as being peace keepers (though here the mission is more about peace making than keeping). It’s more about “we’ve got to help those people” as opposed to “we have to meet our obligations to the Americans so that they relax their illegal tarrifs on our lumber”.
I honestly don’t know why our government hasn’t pulled its troops yet. I sure like to see the Taliban cockroaches die, but I see no rationale for the average Canadian to continue to support this mission since it’s more about combat than reconstruction.

Boy, if this is the beginning of a trend (and since it isn’t the evil, wicked US that is bringing this pressure perhaps another European country or two may follow France’s lead) who will Obama have to apologize to should he, heaven forfend, get elected? Ok, there’s always Belgium, but doesn’t this kind of belie the conventional liberal wisdom that everything we are trying to accomplish in the Iraq is reviled throughout the length and breadth of Europe?
smellthecoffee on March 14, 2008 at 10:18 AM
The US keeps thinking of this as “Canadians doing us a favour”.
When you are habitually in the forefront of defending western civilization without much damn support, that’s the way you tend to feel, and don’t forget that adult conservative government in Canada is a fairly recent development. I lived in Canada for nearly 20 years as an American and I have great respect and love for Canada and Canadians (married to one, actually). But you should not presume to tell the big dog how to behave graciously until you have been that big dog, out on point, by yourself.
ps. Don’t bother telling me how the Canadian Navy almost won the battle of the Atlantic by itself before the Americans came in because… you’re right! My father-in-law was there, and the only reason my own father was a little late to the game was because of isolationists, who would be right at home in the ‘Rat party today!
