Video: Spitz resigns, pretends that he’s sorry

posted at 12:19 pm on March 12, 2008 by Allahpundit
Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

Didn’t want to bury this at the end of the other post. What’s the worst part? The ritual shaming of his wife by having her appear beside him yet again? The references to his “private” failings even as he’s engaged in plea negotiations with federal prosecutors to avoid being indicted? His insistence that he’ll pursue the public good in other ways going forward when we all know he’ll land at some law firm defending POS white-collar criminals for spectacular fees? Answer: None of the above. The worst part is his solemn assertion that he couldn’t tolerate the idea of dragging the state through the ordeal of trying to stay in office. Couldn’t he?

In one of the last and desperate rounds of the end game, a top Spitzer administration official reached out to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s staff on Tuesday to see if the governor could avoid an impeachment vote. But the prospects were grim.

Republicans have pledged to try to have Mr. Spitzer impeached and only 34 of the more than 100 Democrats in the Assembly would be needed for the matter to be referred to the Senate for an impeachment trial. It was clear during the discussions that 34 or more Democrats were almost certain to vote against the governor.

That outcome would have been a dire for the governor, because his top political rival, Senate majority leader Joseph L. Bruno, leads the Senate, where a trial would have been held.

He had no cards left to play; that’s the only reason he folded. Good riddance, Steamroller.

Now that I’ve seen her picture, I agree it’s hard to imagine he’s sorry.

He’s far from contrite.

The tyrant is dead (at least politically). Tonight I am going to get wasted at a neighborhood bar toasting that would-be ‘Stalinist Inquisitor’ of Wall Street’s demise. I hope his wife divorces him. His family stands to inherit millions from Eliot’s Dads fortune.

Hilts on March 12, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Private Failings?

What has become one of the biggest news storys of 2008, Mr. Spitzer’s “private failings” will be examined for weeks ahead. What Client Number Nine does from here will more likely be in the private sector while he deals with his failure to his wife and family.

Now back to the economy stupid………..

Rovin on March 12, 2008 at 12:23 PM

No way in God’s green Earth I’d stand behind my cheating husband like that. NO WAY. I’d already be gone, the kids with me, having already contacted the most expensive bulldog divorce attorney in NYC. I’d take that cheating SOB for every penny he has.

I’m not usually vindictive, but this is just too much.

Thank you for embarrassing our country in front of the entire world, jerkimer. Good riddance indeed. Oh, and as for your pledge to pop up somewhere in the future to work for the public good, please don’t bother. Spitzer’s attempt to marginalize Silver last year as a Democratic power in Albany did more to ensure his downfall as his attempt to frame Bruno using the State Police. Going to Albany and alienating not only top Republicans but top Democrats as well, while at the same time angering longtime NYC Democratic power brokers like Charlie Rangel meant there was nobody for Elliot to turn to who would go to the mat for him now.

If he had played nice with the people in his own party, we would be hearing the “it’s a private matter/it’s only about sex” excuses that the Clintons used and which Alan Dershowitz tried to spin on Monday for Spitzer without success. Look for a very bitter book by the ex-governor 12-18 months from now attacking his fellow party members while unveiling a sudden change of heart over the prosecution of “victimless crimes” like prostitution.

DETROIT — Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick lashed out at his opponents and the news media at the end of his 70-minute State of the City Address on Tuesday. He accused them of creating a “lynch mob mentality” in the scandal over his exchange of sexually explicit text messages with a former top aide.

“This unethical, illegal lynch mob mentality has got to stop,” he told the crowded auditorium at the Max Fisher Music Center.

ihasurnominashun on March 12, 2008 at 12:36 PM

You should read what advice that loony Cindy Adams at the New York Post has for the Mrs.

But while the world addresses his situation legally and politically, I want only to address his wife.

I want to tell her - so what. She may not longer be New York’s first lady, but a husband hooking up with a hooker is not reason enough to no longer be a married lady.

Sex, a primal need, outpoints fear, hunger and love as mankind’s No. 1 driving force. Unless you’re a pig or a monk, many an able-bodied - and I use that term deliberately - 48-year-old husband of 21 years has grazed. I’m not advocating it. I’m merely saying, so what? It’s like takeout food. Less work for mother.

In Louisiana it’s the currency. In Nevada those odds beat the tables. In DC it’s a revolving door. In California they marry the hookers. In France he becomes president.

I heard that and it is disgusting. So let’s see, it is racist to point out that you’ve been cheating on your wife, conspiring with your lover to get 2 cops fired — and costing the nearly bankrupt city $9 mil in the process –, oh, and lying about it all under oath.

I will say this, at least Spitzer had the decency to resign, something that Kilpatrick doesn’t have.

So, what New York ends up with is, a new governor, hand-picked by the disgraced, outgoing governor, for no other reason than his identity.

Good Luck, New York…You’re gonna’ need it.

franksalterego on March 12, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Good grief. Why can’t he or many other public officials understand that, when you’re a public servant, nothing is private? The job of governor is a 24/7/365/4 appointment, and most people would agree that humping ladies half one’s age isn’t in the job description.

I’m not saying that we should see our public officials as they go potty… uh, thanks Larry Craig, you managed to discredit even that line! I’m not saying that we should be able to watch cameras in the governor’s mansions, the White House, etc. monitoring the bedrooms. I am saying, though, that public officials should know going in that they have been given an important but fragile trust. They should lead their lives as though we have that power. How they are seen as men or women has a great deal to do with how effective their job overall will be.

flutejpl on March 12, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Good.

Glad he’s gone.

Now maybe the MSM will cover more important stories like this:

Iraq Report Cites Security Gains, Need for Political, Economic Progress

The report notes that violence is down throughout much of Iraq. Deaths from ethno-sectarian violence are down 90 percent, and civilian and coalition deaths by more than 70 percent since the June report.

It cites a variety of factors contributing to the drop in violence: the coalition’s focus on securing the population; progress against al Qaeda in Iraq and other extremists and criminal groups; and growing rejection of these groups by the Iraqi people, among them.

Nah, Spitzer’s kinky sex adventures are far more news worthy.

As as woman, I just don’t get how she can stand there next to him at a press conference. I would be so embarrassed and disgusted, there is no way in hell I would do that. Ever. I love my husband dearly, but would be puking if I knew my husband did what Spitzer has done.

I bet his wife Silda is charging him a helluva lot more than $5,500 an hour to stand by him during the resignation process and his departure from the Governor’s mansion.

“I’m 10 diamonds honey, and there’s no pre-nup. You’re gonna pay me millions to stand by you for the next 5 days.”

SilverStar830 on March 12, 2008 at 1:16 PM

I keep waiting for one of these wives to come to the news conference, stand quietly beside her husband while he makes his speech, and then, instead of walking away like a kicked puppy at her husband’s heels, grab the microphone and say, “He’s a lying sack of sh*t. Don’t believe a word he says. I’m leaving this dirtbag and taking the kids with me, effective immediately. I’ll also be taking him for everything he has in the divorce settlement. Thank you for your time.” Then turn, slap him hard across the face, and walk calmly away. Now that would be a good news conference!

I really don’t understand why these women “stand by their men.” It’s insane. I never would. Not for a moment. I’d be gone, or his stuff would be on the lawn, before he could finish saying the word “hooker.”

It probably has much to do with his future as an attorney in the private sector. If he never actually publicly names what it is he’s done, then the public record will show that he never admitted to anything. Call it a private matter and he’s covered his ass.

As for his wife - she should take everything he owns that she doesn’t want, put it inside his favorite car - and torch it. Then hire the lawyer.

I agree with others who’ve said that Hillary and Obama should be pressed to tell us what Spitzer has done wrong. If there is no truth and all is morally relative, then he has done nothing wrong. Also, why should Bill Clinton have been able to remain in office while this guy should step down?

Some great quotes collected by Patriot Post:

From ‘Non-Judgmental’ Nonsense By Thomas Sowell

Many in the media refer to Eliot Spitzer as some moral hero who fell from grace. Spitzer was never a moral hero. He was an unscrupulous prosecutor who threw his power around to ruin people, even when he didn’t have any case with which to convict them of anything…

What Eliot Spitzer did was not out of character. It was completely in character for someone with the hubris that comes with the ability to misuse his power to make or break innocent people…

Spitzer himself spoke of his “personal” failing as if it had nothing to do with his being Governor of New York.

In this age, when it is considered the height of sophistication to be “non-judgmental,” one of the corollaries is that “personal” failings have no relevance to the performance of official duties.

What that amounts to, ultimately, is that character doesn’t matter. In reality, character matters enormously, more so than most things that can be seen, measured or documented.

Character is what we have to depend on when we entrust power over ourselves, our children and our society to government officials.

We cannot risk all that for the sake of the fashionable affectation of being more non-judgmental than thou.

INC on March 12, 2008 at 3:30 PM

From Sex and the Married Governor By Cal Thomas

Had New York Governor Eliot Spitzer reached out for the Gideon Bible in his fancy Washington, D.C., hotel room instead of, allegedly, a high-priced prostitute, he might have been forewarned of the dangers in such liaisons.

Such as: “A prostitute is a deep pit; an adulterous woman is treacherous. She hides and waits like a robber, looking for another victim who will be unfaithful to his wife.” (Proverbs 23:27-28) And: “For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell.” (Proverbs 5:3-5)

But who speaks of such things today, a day in which, as C.S. Lewis wrote, “We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.”

INC on March 12, 2008 at 3:30 PM

And now an Obama supdelegate is about to bite the dust. Maybe the superdelegate problem will solve itself if these scandals continue!
Kilpatrick urged to resign

PattyJ on March 12, 2008 at 3:53 PM

I agree with an earlier poster’s contention that Spitzer’s wife has likely known about all this for some time. For years, probably. The question will be what are her motivations whether to spare the kids or a lust to be the first lady equivalent of New York while her husband railroaded and screwed (figuratively and literally) plenty of honest people. The payoff for Silda’s Faustian bargain is being dragged in front of the cameras like a Kristen, of sorts, for Eliot’s awkward moments such as his phony remorse of today.

The burning question should be directed at publicity troll of last week: Gloria Steinem. The question for Steinem should be whether or not Monica is now owed a lot of salary (besides free White House pizza) by Bubba Clinton given that Spitzer was paying a wage rate of five and a half grand a pop, so to speak. Or does Steinem’s weather vane strumpet-overlooking principles shift yet again as regards the Spitzer / Clinton wage policy on their, shall we say, service (or is it serviced?) economy?

Mommynator on March 12, 2008 at 1:49 PM

And speaking in a really high pitched voice. :)

wytammic on March 12, 2008 at 4:26 PM

If there is any good reason for divorce, this is it. Take the money and run, Silda. She deserves it for putting up with all his sh*t.

“You can send him hate mail HERE until Monday.”

Thanks for the link, but it doesn’t sound like he was into S&M, so I doubt as one of his last acts in office, he’s going to be perusing E-mail from this site.

However, perhaps it will be preserved in posterity by the Eliot Spitz Library, so maybe I will shoot him a note of encouragement.

NoDonkey on March 12, 2008 at 3:23 PM

I already did send the hate mail:

Gov. Spitzer, aka Client #9;
I hope you’re throughly ashamed of yourself and the damage you’ve done to your lovely wife and three daughters - not to mention all the women you bought and your lovely state. The only reason why you should stay is so you can be exposed as another Clinton. Oh, you’re so much better than Bill - maybe you too want Ken Starr to write a report about it. That’s probably why you’re staying on. So enjoy the Starr Report, Version 2.0…

E-mail Client #9 here. I’m still a virgin, but I’m all for giving e-mail hell/hate mail/S&M/Giuliani Time/shock n’ awe/payback to the Satan Lt. of Albany who has screwed a great lady and her three daughters.

I doubt seriously she is any more than a victim in this. Her top priorities are the kids, most likely.

HotAirJosef on March 12, 2008 at 5:05 PM

You know what I wished happened?

One of these prostitutes realized what was going on, then got access to the First Lady - probably by bumping into her at an event and told her what was up. Then had the First Lady charge into Spitzer’s room at his next date… as his next date.

HotAirJosef on March 12, 2008 at 5:25 PM

I’d take that scarf off of her neck and look for bruises. You’d have to choke me to within an inch of my life to get me up there with that jagoff.

She looks like hell. I feel for her and their daughters.

sheesh on March 12, 2008 at 5:41 PM

we all know he’ll land at some law firm defending POS white-collar criminals for spectacular fees?

Seems doubtful unless he can entirely avoid indictment or anything more substantial than pleading out to a misdemeanor charge.

In fact, at this point, I’d say his disbarment is almost assured.

After the decline and fall comes a new rise….@$4200.00 a pop.

BL@KBIRD on March 12, 2008 at 5:42 PM

Chrissy Matthews describing Mrs. Spitzer’s courage on Hardball …….

“I love the way she stood there and stared down the press.”

Tweety, dude, the person she should be staring down is standing next to her at the podium.

Moonbattery.

fogw on March 12, 2008 at 5:42 PM

He’s a special kind of filthy. What a maggot.

Jaibones on March 12, 2008 at 6:23 PM

Someone mentioned he might take a high-paying job with some law firm, but I don’t know if he’ll have that option. So far, the prosecutor hasn’t made any deals with him; but there are a number of possible charges that might be brought against him. If he is found guilty of felonies that would cost him his law license.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!!

poodlemom on March 12, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Do I still get my license? Adios, cabesa gordo.

No one knows what it’s like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it’s like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

Poor poor baby Spitzer.
No one knows what it’s like to be him.

silverfox on March 12, 2008 at 8:17 PM

So much for toe tapping.Another sex scandal and money
transfers to shell companys that never existed, and
another Liberal,to the tune of Queen bites the dust!Ha Ha

canopfor on March 12, 2008 at 9:16 PM

If I were Spitzer I can say without a doubt that my wife would be standing by my side as well. Only until she was sure the cameras were live and then she would proceed to tell the world what she really thought. It would make for good TV I can garuntee you that!

Spider79 on March 12, 2008 at 10:14 PM

As a NY’er, I always thought Eliot Spitzer was always an arrogant totalitarian. It sickens me that he won a landslide election. I am so glad I voted for John Faso. Even though he got wallopped, he didn’t back down from the F-ing Steamroller. All the NY Libs can sit there and know they voted the wrong guy in. I knew you were wrong all along.

StatenItaly08 on March 12, 2008 at 10:17 PM

Of course, every news article, barely mentions his party affiliation. But thanks to El Rushbo, I know that means it’s a Liberal Dem.

StatenItaly08 on March 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM

Why do all these politicians and other celebrities all say essentially the same things, and have precisely the same tone when they are apologizing, resigning, not resigning but ‘repentant’, Maybe resigning, etc after getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar, or another body part in the ‘cnookie’????

Well, except for Marion Barry. (“that 8!7(# set me up!”) At least he didn’t sound that fake contrite “I disappointed my family and supporters, but mostly I disappointed myself; I take the full blame for my momentary weakness, but really, I’m the victim here…..”

It is almost like they have a tape of the first press conference of the first scandal ‘apology’ made during that decade, and play it every time. Or do all these losers and boozers hire the same PR flack to write their speech and he is too lame to come up with new material.

LegendHasIt on March 12, 2008 at 11:21 PM

So when does Elliot go into rehab? When will his book come out? When will he leave his frumpy although loyal wife for the babe? When will Hillary offer him a job in her administration? He’d be a great buddy for Bill.

abcurtis on March 13, 2008 at 1:29 AM

Why do all these politicians and other celebrities all say essentially the same things, and have precisely the same tone when they are apologizing, resigning, not resigning but ‘repentant’,

Because that’s all they have. They’re only sorry they got caught. I’m sure that Shining Knight Sir Elliot never believed for a minute he would be found out much less held accountable.
The NY State Legislature Chaplain read from Psalms. He should have read this:
Numbers 32:23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
Sir Elliot’s sins found him out.
