Video: Michelle on Spitzer, “Name That Party,” and a McCain/Romney ticket

The Sun says he’s quitting today, the Post says he’s quitting within the hour. A not-so-fond farewell from MM here, although I’m not sure I agree that this is unmitigated bad news for Hillary. Gender politics are a complicated thing with the Clintons; for every voter having nightmares about Bill chatting up the White House interns again there’s another who’ll sympathize with Hillary having had to play the Silda Spitzer role in a previous political life. Is it a net gain or a net loss?

It’s a draw, sez I. But I expect that HRC is really PO’d about this, drawing as it does the spotlight back on her husband’s very public infidelities.

The fetching Mrs. Malkin on the screencap with the most hilarious “Cat that ate the canary” grin I’ve ever seen. LOL.

Jaibones on March 12, 2008 at 9:22 AM

For Hillary?

It is probably a gain because this makes one more politician that she can honestly claim she is better than.

Lawrence on March 12, 2008 at 9:32 AM

It’s difficult to draw a direct parallel between the indiscretions of Spitzer and Billy Jeff.

The former paid $5,000 a pop for his daliances and the latter only had to pay a couple of bucks for gas money to get to the trailer parks.

fogw on March 12, 2008 at 9:32 AM

These stupid women politicians should STAND UP for women, not the scoundrels that disgrace them and tarnish their families.

EJDolbow on March 12, 2008 at 9:34 AM

It was a great opportunity for MM to bring up Juan Hernandez. As long as he is advising McCain no one’s going to believe that he “got the message” on illegal immigration. I’m sure the majority of voters have no idea who Hernandez is. McCain needs to dump him before they start finding out.

Ordinary1 on March 12, 2008 at 9:37 AM

While I agree with Michelle, that it’s not good news for Hillary, I don’t think it has any real effect unless, for some unforeseen reason, this drags out or he tries to keep his office. Net wash.

Spirit of 1776 on March 12, 2008 at 9:39 AM

Oh, and she’s 100% right on McCain.

Spirit of 1776 on March 12, 2008 at 9:41 AM

Is it a net gain or a net loss?

I’m going with net loss for two reasons.

This isn’t any Governor Happy Pants. It’s New York State’s Governor Happy Pants. Clinton, as a New York Senator, should presumably have something to say to the press about this situation other than no comment but she can’t without bringing up allusions to all the Monica stuff. It’s one thing to be the loving spouse defending a cheating husband. It’s another thing entirely to be forced into a position of supporting and defending the cheating spouse of another loving woman because of politics. It is a lose-lose situation for Clinton. She can’t defend the democrat without writing off the female vote and she can’t side with the “victim” without the electorate remembering they are about to put Bill Clinton back in striking range of interns.

The second reason it is a net loss for Clinton is purely political. Spitzer was a loyal and trusted pit bull within the Clinton camp. His successor may be a rabid a Clinton supporter or not but Clinton’s political creds are attached to the guy who is about to resign because he was too stupid to understand the very financial transaction laws he used like a cudgel in his own morality crusades.

Secondly.

fogw on March 12, 2008 at 9:32 AM

That’s not true and you know it!!!

We’ve all seen the picture of the rally where the beret-wearing Monica got a T-shirt and mug from the Clinton trip to Martha’s Vineyard. That must have set Clinton back $15-20 bucks at least!

highhopes on March 12, 2008 at 9:45 AM

Net loss for Hillary. She can’t criticize him because of Bill and she has to suck up to him because of the super delegates - hence the totally inappropriate good wishes tossed his way. Makes her look more foolish than ever.

There’s also the fact that Norman Hsu gave $52,000 to Spitzer’s campaign which is another regrettable association for Hillary.

And her eyes darting toward her left (the viewer’s right), seemingly at the other part of the screen showing Hillary.

It’s difficult to draw a direct parallel between the indiscretions of Spitzer and Billy Jeff.

fogw

Not an exact parallel, but consider:
Mr. Bill did his thing with Monica in a federal office building on working hours, and later committed perjury by denying the conduct. Spitz appears to have hired a prostitute, which would be a crime. Although these acts are different, what they have in common is that both Mr. Bill and Spitz have claimed that these are “personal” or “private” matters, when they are not.

Bigfoot on March 12, 2008 at 9:47 AM

On Spitzer, MM hits it right…he’ll resign , but he’s also not the kinda guy who just willingly gives up power. But on McCain (I actually held my breath when MM was asked Are you in the pro-Mcain 75 or the other 25% but alas ’twas not to be….)

And there’s really not a whole of focus on Juan Hernandez…rightly so, as his position in simply at the unpaid volunteer level. Does anyone know exactly what Hernandez does there in the campaign? I can’t stand the guy, but he’s off on the sidelines somewhere…

JetBoy on March 12, 2008 at 9:47 AM

Ordinary1 on March 12, 2008 at 9:37 AM

- People know.
- McCain does not have a lock on the election in the fall. Regardless of what fantasy world he lives in.
- Obama doesn’t have a lock either, and neither does Clinton.
- But Clinton isn’t out of this yet.

Bottom line, for now anyway, is Clinton still could be our next president. But she won’t get there with a 50+% of the vote. If Obama gets the nom, he won’t get in with a 50+% vote either. But then again, McCain isn’t banking on getting much over 50% either.

Which is all kinda sad because none of the candidates are banking on a majority win in the next election. Just banking on enough to give them the winning edge.

Kinda makes you wonder where their real priorities (and loyalties) really lie.

Lawrence on March 12, 2008 at 9:49 AM

Net gain in the short-term due to the timing, since it’s effectively taken Geraldine Ferraro’s comment about Obama off the table as the No. 1 political controversy (Ferraro may be right in what she said about Barak, but when you’re campaigning for someone who, if their name was Harvey Clinton wouldn’t be sniffing the Democratic nomination either, it’s not an issue you probably should be addressing). Thanks to Spitzer, Hillary really hasn’t had to since Tuesday morning.

It’s also not bad medium-range, either, if David Patterson really is part of the Charlie Rangel machine, which is backing Hillary over Obama. Having a “fresh new face” with an appealing human interest story of becoming the nation’s first legally blind governor on your side, as well as being and African-American superdelegate supporter in a race against Barak, is a net asset in the identity politics world of the Democratic Party. You might think Hillary would have a few qualms about parading around a man who would remind people that he got where he is only due to a sex scandal, but that assumes the Clintons or their campaign have any sense of shame. The past 16 years have taught us otherwise.

Very good points, but if ES resigns the new gube won’t only be a HRC supporter, he’ll be a BLACK HRC supporter. That’s huge for the Al Sharpton “if Obama doesn’t get the nomination the bruthas and sistahs are gonna walk” crowd.

Michelle is correct on McCain, how can you believe a guy who has Jaun Hernadez on his staff. Does he practice what he preaches?

It’s a loser for Hillary when it is revealed that Bill is Client #8.

It’s a loser for Hillary when it is revealed that Bill is Client #8.

The joke going around is that Bill Clinton is Client #1-8.
And I heard that stand up comedian Nick Dipaulo is using a joke that says he hopes Obama is elected because he likes the idea of a black guy giving him change for once.

gridlock2 on March 12, 2008 at 10:17 AM

One would have to wonder how the remaining clients (#1 thru #8)are going about closing out their respective accounts when the may very well be monitored or in fact frozen.

Hillary to Bill: “Bill, how come that waiter is cutting my credit card in half?” Bill—- “I don’t have the slightest idea, there’s pleanty in that account. In fact, I made a healthy deposit just last week”

Rovin on March 12, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Hillary sending out her sympathy to the Governor first and his family second says a lot, she’s the only person I’ve seen who’s reacted that way.
That answers why she stayed with Bill, she apparently approves of adultery.

From the comments lately, it seems like most Hot Air readership is in the 75% McCain camp. You gave up your souls for absolutely nothing in return.

McCain is proving that conservatives are irrelevant in the GOP. However, he’ll need us in November which is why he will lose.

Valiant on March 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM

Valiant

Most conservatives are relevant. It’s the all-or-nothing conservatives who are irrelevant.
Reagan raised taxes & gave us real amnesty. Did you support him?

jgapinoy on March 12, 2008 at 11:50 AM

jgapinoy –

If the Internet and weblogs had been around in 1980, Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have been Ronald Reagan to a lot of people who now say they’re the hardest of hard-core Reaganites.

jon1979 on March 12, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Cough drop, you have got to be kidding me!! MM could read from the Baltimore White Pages and I would listen to her!!! As for Mr. McShamnesty Count me in the 25%. I would still vote for Hill or B. Hussein before the Maverick. But, what MM suggests would be a step in the right direction.

pueblo1032 on March 12, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Maybe, John McCain is playing a double game. It has been done in politics before. He gives this Hernandez guy a role in his campaign and maybe Hernandez can reel in some Hispanic votes in Texas or California. Then if McCain is elected, he simply discards Hernandez or gives him a job in the mail room. This is what I suspect McCain is doing. Since this Hernandez guy in unknown to the general public, if McCain discards him after winning the election, nobody will care.

You’re making the assumption that McCain is an intelligent person instead of the bitter old man that he is. But, then you did say in the beginning, maybe…

If the Internet and weblogs had been around in 1980, Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have been Ronald Reagan to a lot of people who now say they’re the hardest of hard-core Reaganites.

Reagan would still have been Reagan. The public just would have been better informed. You left out the biggest tax increase in history signed by Reagan- TEFRA.

Reagan had to compromise on some things to achieve conservative ends. McCain starts out compromising to shiv conservatives in the back because he hates them. He will never get my vote.

Valiant —

I’m talking more about perception of Reagan if there had been an internet and weblogs a quarter-century ago. Even back then, Richard Viguerie was ready to write Reagan out of the conservative movement because of his tax increase and other actions he saw as a betrayal of conservatives.

Viguerie was a lone voice in the wilderness in the 1980s wanting to do that. But with a website and blog linkings, Reagan’s agreement to hike taxes would have drawn far more fire and made his support a little less solid — not down to the levels of shaky support McCain or Bush have seen, but there would have been a lot more spur-of-the-moment online sniping over thinks like tax hikes or the O’Connor or Kennedy nominations to the Supreme Court.

jon1979 on March 12, 2008 at 4:54 PM

MM is going to develop into a newsmedia superstar no matter how the left tries to prevent it. She is just so damn smart and well-spoken. Ann Coulter could learn a few things about graciousness from her, but I realize that Ann has her own schtick, and I kind of like the finger-in-their-eye approach once in a while too. Lord knows there is no lack of lefties that practice that, although the MSM pretends it is a conservative speciality.
