My favorite liberal’s been haranguing me over e-mail about how prostitution is rarely a choice in any meaningful sense and why we need to crack down to keep more wayward girls from broken homes from wandering into “careers” they don’t really want. KP 1, AP 0?
She left a broken home on the Jersey Shore at 17 and came to New York City to work the nightclubs as a rhythm and blues singer. Now, at 22, she is the unwitting, and as yet unseen, star of the seamy drama that is the downfall of Gov. Eliot Spitzer of New York…
“I just don’t want to be thought of as a monster,” the woman said as she told the tiniest tidbits of her story. Born Ashley Youmans but now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupre, she spoke softly and with good humor as she added with significant understatement: “This has been a very difficult time. It is complicated.”…
Ms. Dupre said on by telephone Tuesday night that she was worried about how she would pay her rent since the man she was living with “walked out on me” after she discovered he had fathered two children. She said she was considering working at a friend’s restaurant or, once her apartment lease expires, moving back in with her family in New Jersey “to relax.”…
She left “a broken family” at age 17, having been abused, according to the MySpace page, and has used drugs, “been broke and homeless.”
She’ll be able to re-up with that lease once the Enquirer comes calling. Here’s her MySpace page, which is linked directly by the Times. Exit question equal time: The Today Show took a decidedly more libertarian view of high-priced call girls this morning. What would the breakdown have to be between exploited victims and truly willing volunteers to justify a total ban on the practice? 51/49? 80/20? 99/1?

I would say KP 1, AP 0; but I suspect KP thinks this should be done via government.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say there is no choice, but there is certain patterns that seem to push people down certain paths. Can we interject ourselves in there somewhere? Dicey, even with good intentions. I appreciate KP’s intent as always, but unless we “fix” the home, the outcome will still exist. And the government doesn’t seem very skilled at fixing anything.
The counter-claim made, of course, is that these are victimless crimes, but the true sense of the word, that is false. I think these stories are just sad in general.

If they were “classy”, they wouldn’t likely be “escorts” in the first place. I can’t imagine that a guy paying for her services is going to be so offended by a tatoo that he’d turn her away.
My view on this whole thing is- would she viewed any better if instead of an escort/prostitute she was having a romantic relationship with a married man who didn’t pay $5000 cash, but instead bought her $5000 in gifts and such?
Again, devils advocate time:
I’ve seen the following argument made-
“Escort”= $500, desired outcome almost guaranteed
Dating (assuming the “three date rule” applies)
Dinner at respectable resturant- average $100 x 3 = $300
Movie= $30
Drinks at nice place= $40 x 2 = $80
Good haircut, clothing upgrade = $200
Total= $610, no guarantee that you make it past the third date or that it results in sex.
Not that I’m defending anyone or paying $4300, but for those wondering why someone would do pay for it- there you go.

Sorry, but alpha males frequently don’t stop with just one beautiful woman. And yes, I saw how the look in McCain’s wife toward him changed before and after the news broke. She is clearly gorgeous, and gorgeous women always have options. I live in LA and though happily married now, I was single at one time. I dated some gorgeous women. To generalize, they feel, no, they know, that they are entitled to be compensated for their beauty. Whether it’s a fancy dinner, jewelry, a Miata, a townhome in Encino, or marriage with the understanding that she would not have to work.
Some women are better at converting their, er, assets into currency. Prostitution, porn, stripping, sugar daddy, expensive dating, advancing up the corporate ladder, Fox Info-babes, lucrative marriage, etc. It is a continuum whereby beautiful women can convert their beauty into financial success. Obviously, their character and intelligence determines where they use their leverage, but none of them starve to death or end up homeless. Like I said, they all have options.

I’ve got news for KP–while I’ve no doubt she’s extremely fortunate in thsi respect, almost everybody wanders into a career he or she “doesn’t want.” That one’s occupation isn’t what one would prefer does not a victim make.
There are actual cases of sexual slavery, where the conduct is coerced and the women explicitly did not choose to become prostitutes, and that’s an entirely different matter. But it certainly doesn’t sound like such is the case here. Simply suffering a rough childhood then volitionally taking a (lucrative!) job that’s (possibly) not one’s personal ideal isn’t slavery. Hell, it’s damned near normal.

Yeah, but that’s a choice she is making. The beautiful woman meets the rich guy and decides if she wants to be his girlfriend and have a relationship that includes sex.
