My favorite liberal’s been haranguing me over e-mail about how prostitution is rarely a choice in any meaningful sense and why we need to crack down to keep more wayward girls from broken homes from wandering into “careers” they don’t really want. KP 1, AP 0?
She left a broken home on the Jersey Shore at 17 and came to New York City to work the nightclubs as a rhythm and blues singer. Now, at 22, she is the unwitting, and as yet unseen, star of the seamy drama that is the downfall of Gov. Eliot Spitzer of New York…
“I just don’t want to be thought of as a monster,” the woman said as she told the tiniest tidbits of her story. Born Ashley Youmans but now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupre, she spoke softly and with good humor as she added with significant understatement: “This has been a very difficult time. It is complicated.”…
Ms. Dupre said on by telephone Tuesday night that she was worried about how she would pay her rent since the man she was living with “walked out on me” after she discovered he had fathered two children. She said she was considering working at a friend’s restaurant or, once her apartment lease expires, moving back in with her family in New Jersey “to relax.”…
She left “a broken family” at age 17, having been abused, according to the MySpace page, and has used drugs, “been broke and homeless.”
She’ll be able to re-up with that lease once the Enquirer comes calling. Here’s her MySpace page, which is linked directly by the Times. Exit question equal time: The Today Show took a decidedly more libertarian view of high-priced call girls this morning. What would the breakdown have to be between exploited victims and truly willing volunteers to justify a total ban on the practice? 51/49? 80/20? 99/1?

I’m agnostic on legalization. I agree with KP that prostitution isn’t really a choice and is the result of poor choices. As in Amsterdam, legalization leads to increased crime and human trafficking.

I’ve had some experience with that line o’ work (security & transportation - not XXX). The girls ranged from butterflies to pigs. Some smart; some dumb. But most all were abused, drug addicted, disease ridden and lonely to the point a tragedy.
Same went for the ‘exotic’ dancers at the clubs. “Skank nightmares from hell”, is how one employer put it.
It’s not glamorous; not lucrative; and anything but a ‘career choice.’ It’s a desperate move for 98% of ‘em.
All the media wood is just ratings & money. Enough already.

Of course, now that the transactions have been exposed, I’m sure he’s not happy with the outcome anymore. He got a lot more than he bargained for. It cost him a lot more than $80,000. It cost him the trust of his wife and daughters. It cost him his job. It cost him his ego. It cost him respect from a large part of society. Things that he may never get back.
You can lose money and make it back. But when you lose your good name, you’ve lost it not only for you, but your family. His poor daughters are the biggest victims in all of this. How would you like to be one of his daughters going off to college and having every person ask you (when they learn your last name), “Are you related to Eliot Spitzer?”

So is being a ditch-digger. I’m pretty conservative on such matters and protective of the disadvantaged, but many people are driven to their jobs due to regrettable choices or circumstances. There are plenty of reasonable reasons to ban prostitution, but that’s not really one of them.

I may get shouted down for this one, but I personally believe that Kristen/Ashley has a lot in common with Vicki Iseman.
Kristen/Ashley got paid in the neighborhood of $4000 an hour for her services.
Vicki probably got paid very, very well for her successful lobbying of “John” McCain.
The two were alone on private charter flights.
Note that “John” never said that he didn’t have sex/sexual relations with Vicki. He said that they didn’t have a “romantic” relationship. I don’t care if it was “romantic”, I care if it was “inappropriate”.

As for the MSNBC video, you always hear all these stories of women making $2000 a night, $10,000 a week as a call girl/stripper, and I call complete bullshit on that. If that was the case, why are all the ranches in Nevada going out of business? Why do they change girl line-ups so frequently? Why are these ‘businesses’ always in some converted trailer? Look it up online for yourself. Assuming that a ranch had 15 girls and each one was making $2000-$5000 a night, the owner would have to be getting a decent cut. Why aren’t these ranches lined with gold and Italian marble? I think it’s all a load of crap so these women can make their shallow lives sound more glamorous than they are.
