Romney: Heck yes, I’d be McCain’s VP; Update (Ed): Why not?

posted at 6:20 pm on March 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

In case you were planning on watching Hannity & Colmes tonight, now you don’t have to.

Thus do very bad ideas gain momentum:

“I think any Republican leader in this country would be honored to be asked to serve as the vice presidential nominee, myself included,” Romney told FOX’s Sean Hannity in a broadcast set to air tonight. “Of course this is a nation which needs strong leadership. And if the nominee of our party asked you to serve with him, anybody would be honored to receive that call … and to accept it, of course.”…

“There are really no hard feelings, I don’t think, on either side of this,” he said in the interview. “There were no pacts and so forth that make people feel like that we will never come together. Instead these campaigns are all coming together. We are supporting our nominee enthusiastically, aggressively.”…

Listening to Obama and Clinton discuss their national security credentials, Romney said, is akin to “listening to two chihuahuas argue about which is the biggest dog.”

“When it comes to national security, John McCain is the big dog, and they are the chihuahuas,” he said.

Exit question: If a guy with three years in the Senate is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief, how is a guy with four years as governor of Massachusetts qualified to be a heartbeat away?

Update (Ed): I don’t think this is a bad idea at all, for a couple of reasons. First, Romney has extensive executive experience, both in and out of government. That could help McCain rebut the coming charge that he doesn’t understand economics. Neither Hillary nor Obama have any real-world business experience, nor are either likely to choose a running mate with any, given their populist rhetoric during the primary campaign. That gives the GOP ticket a clear advantage on both economics and executive experience.

Second, Romney proved he could both raise money and organize, two areas in which McCain comes up short. Both Hillary and Obama have done an impressive job in these areas, and the ticket needs someone who can match up against them — at least a little better than McCain can do. Romney can take over that job and put his team to work on building the kind of networks that the Republicans will need to win the election.

Lastly, Romney resonates with the conservative activists. It didn’t win him the nomination, but they wound up fighting for him at the end. He could help bring them back into the big tent. I see a Romney choice as a very positive step — and if Romney’s willing to do it, even more so.

I’m spent.

Just heard my mayor (well my mayor to the slightly south) use the “N” word during his state of the City address.

Yes…the Detroit Mayor has once gain played the race card.

Look for it on your national news soon.

Like Ann Coulter, Romney as VP is the ONLY WAY I’d ever vote for McCain. We must not forget what McCain is all about.

iamse7en on March 11, 2008 at 8:13 PM

McCain may be the absolute worst candidate we could have come up with, but I’ll still vote for him in the general. We can’t afford to lose the war on terror.
BTW, Mark Sanford would be a good choice too.

I don’t know if that was a joke or not…but as a Catholic, I don’t recognize divorce. Therefore, I would take any sex you have with anyone after your divorce as adultery. Do you think you should be stoned because you violated a part of my moral standards?

malan89 on March 11, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Actually, you continue to presume. I haven’t had sex since that divorce! 12 LOOOOOONG years.

Well, when this becomes a Catholic country, I guess so. My “stone law” is not based on ANY religion!!!!! Just because you choose to FALSELY tie it to judaism or chrisinsanity does not make it the reason I choose that punishment!!!

My reasoning is based on the act of adultery. And my point is, that if we don’t make punishments that deter others from committing a specific crime – then that crime is not really a crime, is it???

Sheesh. Critical thinking, people. Please. I’m not dumbing down my comments, so get used to it.

It would be the best Commander in Chief/Chief Executive Officer combination. I still think Mitt would make better use of the next 4 years if he spent it doing whatever he wanted, but if VP is what he wants then I’m all for it.

Greenhorn on March 11, 2008 at 8:26 PM

the action of pushing those standards on others is just as inexcusable. As for the stoning thing….I’m all for the death penalty in certain cases (and even some “out there” punishments like castrating serial pedophiles), but stoning is unnecessary in any case (especially adultery).

You’re not my ex-wife, I hope. If you are…

Commander in chief experience requires one to be commander and chief. So we have to look at philosophy, people skills, his understanding of the economy, and his ability to lead. Mitt has all these things, he is a strong leader.

Should he take the vp position, I think he shouldn’t, because I don’t think McCain will win. But he will have to be careful to support McCain with a 10 foot pole, close enough to thump him on the head, but far enough that you don’t get his taint.

Btw chosen one, your class envy is coming though again. Romney has worked with the poor and has given to charity that helps the poor. And has done so not for the purpose of a photo op, but because he is a nice guy.

Lastly, as far as the anti-Mormon vote, people’s memory seems to be pretty weak. Mitt was getting as many or more votes than Huck except for Iowa.

Again Mitt, only join McCain if you can keep that 10 foot pole, and keep close tabs on your money, as McCain will pick you only because of your money not because of how you can strengthen the ticket overall.

Based on that comment alone, I think it’s fair to say I win.
Let me get this straight.
You argue that adultery should be punishable by stoning.
Buy Danish argues that, regardless of someone’s views on adultery, stoning is ridiculous in any case.
I bring up the 8th amendment to support the argument that stoning is ridiculous.
I argue that you don’t get to inject your moral standards into the laws of this country (by stoning adulterers) just as I am not allowed to inject mine (by punishing you for the divorce that you had and the eventual post-divorce sex that you will most likely have).
You argue that this is not a “Catholic country” and that your stoning adulterers proposal isn’t based on religion.
It doesn’t matter if you pulled the idea out of your ears. The American people shouldn’t be force fed your personal values by the government, no matter if they are based on religion or not.

malan89 on March 11, 2008 at 8:38 PM

I’m sorry. I shouldn’t laugh. Are you sure teh Armenia is on board? It’s important. Their contribution could tip the scales. You positive?

It’s symbolic. Whether it is one soldier or one hundred thousand, it shows international support for not leaving Iraq before the job is done, allowing the Iraqi Government to crumble, and standing by as thousands of people die at the hands of terrorists.

malan89 on March 11, 2008 at 8:40 PM

I’ll disclose my biases: I’m antiwar, but please if you decide to argue, try and stay on the topic. Assuming the war is necessary and even critical, do you find the level of support for it across the world acceptable? If not, whose fault is that?

freevillage on March 11, 2008 at 7:08 PM

I take it you’re definitely not a “Protest Warrior”. I DO find the level of support acceptable, and if and when the sharia mullahs are removed from power, we will also see the “little people” of muslim-dominant regions support us as well. Initially, I was absolutely against going into Iraq, because I thought that the moment these people were given the “freedom” to choose, I truly thought they would “choose” to annihilate us, and with our own money! I hate to say it, but Iraq proved one thing to me, more than any other…

“All fathers and mothers, in all societies, want their children to be educated, and live free from poverty and violence. No people on Earth yearn to be oppressed, or aspire to servitude, or eagerly await the midnight knock of the secret police.” – George W. Bush, 01/29/02

Which is why I believe that in a country with OVER 25 million muslims, there have only been 3983 deaths of American Forces since the beginning of the Iraq war.

I’m sorry, but 140,000 combat troops is NOT going stop 25,000,000 muslims hell bent on “killing infidels” so I call Iraq a success, along with the other 25 million people we liberated in Afghanistan, so:

Republicans = 50 million people liberated
Democrats = 2 to 5.1 million dead after Vietnam pullout

Amen to that.

No one likes war, but it’s a fact of life that will continue forever. Whether it’s Muslims, Nazis, Communists ie: anybody who disagrees with our way of life, there will be war. It’s an inevitability.

It’s not for lack of trying to avoid war, but simply human nature to change/fight those who have different viewpoints, skin color or political system than you. Eventually some nutcase is going to throw a bomb or some leader hoping to gain greater power will fire the first shot. It’s sad, but no matter how much we try to talk things out, it still happens.

I’m proud of what our Nation has done with those we have had the unfortune of fighting in war. And even though our logic and motivation for invading Iraq was sketchy at best, I’m proud of what we have and will continue to accomplish for Iraq.

Ahh, yes. I knew it. Lib in disguise. Take your BDS elsewhere.

You continue to use false logic (your 8th Amendment comment

It’s not an issue of morality as to whether stoning is a reasonable punishment or not. Its an issue of reading the constitution. If you don’t view stoning as both cruel and unnecessary, then you have a very twisted interpretation of the constitution and original intent…but, I will concede the point. If you’re not allowed to push your views on adultery/personal moral standards on me, then I shouldn’t be forced to push my interpretation of the constitution on you.

Win or lose in the general election, VP is the best place for our (current) choice for the 2012 presidential nominee. Rich-Good, Buying Elections-Bad

There is nothing riskier and nothing nobler than putting your money where you mouth is. Any candidate willing to risk his or her own fortunes in order to take a public office deserves the respect and admiration not worthy to most political leaders in this era. Mitt Romney is a true American patriot.

Elections can’t be bought. Only fascists will use that kind of demagoguery to scare the public and destroy their opponents

We should hope and pray for more leaders willing to risk there personal fortunes for the sake this great country.

LOL, maybe. But these mortgage securities were invented by private business, and the problem is that they aren’t worthless but no one knows how much they are worth. So the banks aren’t lending anybody any money, which is hurting the economy, which will make fewer of the mortgages get paid off.

Thanks. I was beginning to think that I was the only who saw that there is something more that just a difference of political opinion. I “hate” the Clinton’s, too, but not on a level that he hates the Romney’s.

Spelling “won” as “one” isn’t a “writing style” and I’m not even going down that road with you. And I’m done with the “let’s go out and stone cheaters because I happen to think it’s the right thing to do” argument. I think common sense and sanity are on my side in that one.

LOL, He didn’t earn it, rather he was anointed by the party elites in Florida and he was chosen by the media and the cross over Democrats. He has yet to win over the base.

Conservative Voice on March 11, 2008 at 9:48 PM

yet you see nothing wrong with McCain getting the not because the Republican elites felt it was his turn?

Conservative Voice on March 11, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Voters dont matter I guess. I must be so retarded that I will do whatever Gov Crist tells me to.

Squid Shark on March 11, 2008 at 9:49 PM

Oh yeah, another reason I hate the Romiinees is that after the NYT’s tried to slime Mav, Josh the next day was quoted as saying his daddy might get back in. Now Mitt is probably pleading with Hannity to run this interview tonight. Carl Rove says it should be Romenee. Guess what, they are not the nominee. Oh yeah, don’t forget about when Mitto said his sons had “sacrificed” by being on the campaign trail with him. What a joke. Meantime Mav’s boys are fightin’ and he hasn’t mentioned it once, because he doesn’t want to exploit their service. THAT IS PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL, AND THE ROMINEES WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT THAT’S LIKE!!

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 11, 2008 at 9:50 PM

So the banks aren’t lending anybody any money, which is hurting the economy, which will make fewer of the mortgages get paid off.

I don’t know much about the commercial and business aspect of bank lending but in the area of residential and personal lending the banks seem to have plenty of money are making it more and more attractive to borrow every day. The problem doesn’t seem to be a lack of cash but a lack of customers. Personal debt is so high people are frozen and can’t do anything. Anyone who thinks the real estate crisis is abetting should take a breath and step back because we haven’t seen the worst of it yet.

You may find this an interesting article.

peacenprosperity on March 11, 2008 at 9:50 PM

I will do whatever Gov Crist tells me to.

gov crist will ask you to do the same thing gov spitzer asked his call girl to do.

peacenprosperity on March 11, 2008 at 9:52 PM

LOL, He didn’t earn it, rather he was anointed by the party elites in Florida and he was chosen by the media and the cross over Democrats.

Nice meme but it the numbers are working against you. more Dems voted in their FL Primary than Rep. There are not that many “cross overs” in a closed primary where it is fairly difficult ot switch regestration. Exit polling if faulty at best. Floridian Republicans are different than the rest of the nation.

You also discount the fact that McCain killed in the most important Florida Republican community, Cubans.

Oh yeah, don’t forget about when Mitto said his sons had “sacrificed” by being on the campaign trail with him. What a joke.

I nominally agree, but less harshly, the Romneys do not have a history of sacrificing for the country. I find Josh to be a spoiled, whiney brat who lacks alot of his fathers graciousness.

Squid Shark on March 11, 2008 at 9:57 PM

Now I know why Mav won the nomination….THE CHOSEN ONE did it single handedly.

I don’t agree with CHOSEN about his candidate, but he certainly makes a good case for him while portraying the flip flopping RINO Romney most accurately.

If Mac picks Huck as VP you can count me in!

SaintOlaf on March 11, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Squid, there were cross overs, it wasn’t impossible to cross over, Fl exit polls showed that Gov Crist’s endorsement was a major factor, and Romney also had to deal with last minute lies that McCain pushed.
McCain earned the nomination by being a slime ball, and the Republican establishment all gave him the nod because it was his turn.

Clinton and Obama raise more money for their campaigns because of PORK. Some of this money is getting kicked back to them. McCain cant keep up with them in this regard-he is too honest. I dont understand wht this is not played up more.

fryclint on March 11, 2008 at 10:02 PM

You know coming over from Captain’s I have no idea who Allapundit is and from what I see I don’t like him/her or agree with them. Kind of like “the chosen one.” For heaven’s sake who would ever choose you with your bigoted posts? What in the world do you have against 5 decent, intelligent, educated young men who have never been arrested, never been on drugs? Oh maybe I’m getting a picture here – do you have any children? You must be jealous of these young men. I guess their not in your hippy class. Gee he raised good kids. Imagine that. I wish Mitt wouldn’t agree to be the vp candidate either. I think mccain is going to loose and I don’t want Mitt on the ticket.

Mitto in 1994: ” I wanna be more pro gay marriage than Ted Kennedy”.

Mitto in 2008: “I’ve changed my mind, abortion is murder”.

I’d really like to slap Mitt, with the backhand, you know one of those disgraceful slaps.

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 11, 2008 at 10:07 PM

it wasn’t impossible to cross over

It is very difficult.

Fl exit polls showed that Gov Crist’s endorsement was a major factor,

Only among the 8& undecideds.

and Romney also had to deal with last minute lies that McCain pushed.

McCain was gaining in the polls before McCain “pushed” his “lies”

McCain earned the nomination by being a slime ball, and the Republican establishment all gave him the nod because it was his turn.

So we only grouse when your boy gets hit by the “slimeball” train? (Not that I am conceding McCain is a “Slimeball”) Do you think that maybe, just maybe Romney didnt connect with the silent “Moderate wing” that may just be a majority within the party.

I sucked it up and voted for Bush without complaint when he “slimeballed” his way in 2000. Crying over spilt milk gets you nothing but 4 years of retreat and liberal judges.

Whah…

Squid Shark on March 11, 2008 at 10:08 PM

Hussein Obama = most liberal candidate ever!

you do realize that McCain won Fl by a narrow margin? And what I find interesting, is you first discount the Gov’s endorsement by saying only among the moderates, but then later say that Romney lost because he didn’t connect with the moderates! LOL.
And anyone who push polls lies is a slime ball.

Conservative Voice on March 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM

If a guy with three years in the Senate is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief, how is a guy with four years as governor of Massachusetts qualified to be a heartbeat away?

You don’t see a difference between the roles of a VP and the President? You think the exact same standards apply???
*
Never thought you would pretend to be so naive just to get an exit question in.

right2bright on March 11, 2008 at 10:17 PM

Squid, definition of a moderate is someone who doesn’t have any morals, because that is too black and white.
As far as moderates not having a sense of humor, I can only read from you and the Chosen One, and all I see is bitterness and class envy, thereby the only sense of humor you have is at the expense of another’s misery…hence no sense of humor.

Conservative Voice on March 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM

I do, 6 points is fairly close, but not a nail biter either.

And what I find interesting, is you first discount the Gov’s endorsement by saying only among the moderates,

At what point does undecideds become moderates. What about the people coming in trying to decide between the Huckster and Romney…Seems like you are stratching a bit to set up an apparent contradiction which does not exist.

LOL

LOL indeed :)

I think anyone who sells BS plans to desperate auto workers is shady, but I dont think Romney is a slimeball, he was just desperate to score a win.

Decidedly untrue…
I have many strongly held convictions, however, I am very much a centrist on many issues.
You live in you fantasy world though, where only the “pure” have any moral fiber…

all I see is bitterness and class envy

Where is my class envy, I have alot of respect for Gov Romney, I dont like his son, but I like him well enough and would like to see him as VP.
