NY Post: Spitzer’s been using hookers for at least six years; Update: Feds feared Spitzer was being blackmailed
posted at 3:25 pm on March 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
In case there was any slim hope that he might hang on, the emerging details of just how extensive his shenanigans were ought to polish that off. Wait ’til the tabs track down “Kristen” and ask her to confirm or deny Heidi Fleiss’s theory of how he got busted.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been soliciting high-priced hookers for at least six years and possibly for more than a decade, sources tell The Post.
The revelation yesterday that the crusading governor was in fact “Client 9″ named in a federal prostitution indictment did not shock insiders in the city’s sex industry.
Sources tell The Post that Spitzer had frequented high-priced hookers as far back as 2002 and possibly earlier.
Spitzer, who as attorney general lead investigations into prostitution, was among an elite group of powerbrokers and high-powered attorneys that regularly paid for dates at top escort agencies, sources said.
The same article says he and “Kristen” had rendezvoused before, although Newsday claims he’d “visited” with other women at the Emperors Club seven or eight times, all over the country, dating back “several years.” Four digit fees in each and every case.
Exit question: Nobody knew? Surely some of his aides would have had an inkling and whispered something to the party leaders in NYS vetting the guy for his gubernatorial run. Although … if they knew, people on Wall Street would have heard and would have used it to destroy him after his office started cracking down. It’s either a miracle of discretion that word never leaked or the Post’s story is crap. Which is it? And if it’s the latter, how come Newsday independently is also reporting assignations dating back to before he was governor?
Update: What does this do to the left’s theory of a politically motivated prosecution? Only now are the Bushies digging up the dirt to bring down a guy whose approval rating was in the toilet anyway? Or did they supposedly have it in hand all this time and were just waiting for the right time, and this is the right time for whatever reason? Whatever.
For the record, Paterson says there are no transition plans ongoing.
Update: Another depth charge on the nutroots theory of a targeted prosecution: Not only was it Spitz’s bank who alerted the feds of his suspicious transfers, the investigation was underaken because they thought someone might have been blackmailing him.
No shortage of material if someone had, needless to say.
Spitzer had the money broken down into several smaller amounts of under $10,000 each, apparently to avoid getting around federal regulations requiring the reporting of the transfer of $10,000 or more, the sources said. The regulations are aimed at helping spot possible illegal business activities, such as frauds or drug deals.
Apparently, having second thoughts about even sending the total amount in this manner because it still might reveal what he was doing, Spitzer then asked that the bank to take his name off the wires, the sources said.
Bank officials declined, however, saying that it was improper to do so and in any event, it was too late to do so, because the money already had been sent, the sources said.
The bank then, as is required by law, filed an SAR, or Suspicious Activity Report, with the Internal Revenue Service, reporting the transfer of the money that exceeded $10,000, but had been broken down into smaller amounts, the sources said…
[A]n analyst at the regional IRS office in Hauppauge noted Spitzer’s particular SAR and singled it out for attention to criminal investigators, the sources said.
The assumption, the sources said, was that Spitzer was somehow being victimized either by a blackmailer or an impostor. The agents also speculated that perhaps the governor was involved in some sort of political corruption, the sources reiterated.
The former AG of New York, famous for his prosecutions of corporate crime, didn’t think to avoid an SAR?

Maybe it’s just one of those ‘oh, everybody hires thousand dollar hookers for lunch dates and unspeakable acts’ sort of things. That could be why it never came out before. Imagine the media’s surprise when the public expressed concern over it all.
NeoconNews.com on March 11, 2008 at 3:29 PM
What I want to know is what did he get for the four digit fees that he couldn’t get elsewhere for much much less? Perhaps nobody knowing about it?
darii on March 11, 2008 at 3:29 PM
I wonder how many times he’s spiked an investigation into prostitution rings that were too close to home?

Exactly what I’m wondering, darii.

He would have never been caught if he wasn’t so stupid about the money trail. High priced hookers = Discreet
TroubledMonkey on March 11, 2008 at 3:31 PM
Yeah, I thought “Client 9″ sounded like he was in on the ground floor.
Also, when he prosecuted other rings maybe he was just going after the competition of his favorite business? I wonder if that didn’t have something to do with how he financed his, um, hobby.
Akzed on March 11, 2008 at 3:32 PM
With that long a history of soliciting call girls, and rumors of Spitzer’s name being linked to prostitutes last year, you have to wonder whether or not someone angry with Elliott either on the Democratic or Republican side may have gotten wind of this and helped direct the investigators in the proper direction.
Spitzer’s “take no prisoners” attitude when he arrived in Albany last January, not just towards Republican Senate leader Joe Bruno but longtime Democratic House poobah Sheldon Silver means that both sides were fighting to keep Spitzer from trying to take their power. Try and steamroll both political parties after you’ve showed no concern for abusing people in the private sector, and you have a lot of possible suspects who would have no problem exposing your hypocracy.

I’m all for legalizing prostitution, but a married guy hiring hookers because there are some things his wife won’t do? You know, here’s an idea:
If there’s something that floats your boat sexually, how about trying to be sure your wife is game to try it when you marry? It’s called communication and sexual compatibility. What a concept.

Maybe that explains his support for illegals.

Heidi’s theory doesn’t match the fed’s story they were tipped off by a bank looking at strange cash transactions. From the transcript I read, Kristen seemed pretty confident of her ability to handle Eliot’s request for “unsafe” practices. “Hey, dude, you want the sex, do it this way.” I don’t see someone making the kind of money those gals did tipping off law enforcement, when they could lead him around by his appendage, plus the blackmail potential. No sale on Heidi’s theory.

Well I think it’s the secrecy of doing business anonymously and the feel of “legitimacy” since it’s an “escort service” that they are paying for.

You would think by now that they are never “private” matters once they get shown beneath a spotlight. But they never learn — the dirt always comes out into the light one way or the other.
ScoopPC11 on March 11, 2008 at 3:47 PM
The details on “difficult” could also prove humiliating to Spitzer once the press gets to the call girls. It’ll make for some good NY Post headlines though.
dedalus on March 11, 2008 at 3:48 PM
Not that I think this makes an iota of difference but the NY State Senate is Republican and hanging by a thread. There’s a special election coming up which, I think, (I try not to pay attention to the ridic politics of our fine state), may switch the power balance. If lefties wanted to conspiracy theorize, that’s one option.

Someone angry with Elliott Spitzer, the Common Man’s (Superrich) Hero?!?!
Actually, of course someone always knows what these guys are doing – cause many of them are doing it themselves. I’d watch the guys too quick to defend him; probably means they have their own little code numbers with VIP.
My bet is the Goldman Sachs guy he threatened when he spoke out against Spitter. Or someone else like him, with deep pockets and enough time to keep PIs on him around the clock. Look to his team to blame some “Corporate-Wing Attack” – worked for Hil.
Sadly, it appears the truth is his own stupidity and arrogance brought him down. And how many others? Who do you think referred the guy to the VIP people?
Hope the press doesn’t SUpress this – I see a Clinton as Client #1.

What makes you think it is Mrs. Spitzer’s fault. Eliot isn’t exactly the “hottest” guy in the room.
And the very fact that you and I are speculating on the Spitzer’s private sex life is precisely why he needs to resign.
highhopes on March 11, 2008 at 3:57 PM
You got an ugly wife, so it’s okay to cheat??? Or she ain’t a “live fish” in bed justifies adultery?
Your question is just as disgusting as Spitzer’s behavior.
If you have a marriage and enter into it with certain expectations of behavior, there is never a reason to betray those expectations. Open marriage – it’s okay as long as that’s what both parties sign on to (probably like Hil and Bill did).
Otherwise…give her plastic surgery or buy her a vigrator.

Aside from that being pure speculation,I doubt her performance has anything to do with it. Here’s a clue. Not everyone is in top form all the time. Any deficiency is his.

Unless those Wall Street high-rollers themselves had something to lose from the lid being blown off the operation.
I think that’s right. As a wealthy and powerful man, he can get all the “strange” he wants without paying for it — much of it probably just as attractive as anybody on the Emperor Club’s roster. But then he’s gotta worry about whether a mistress or one-night stand is going to go all Fatal Attraction on him. Pros give you the benefit of emotional detachment — like Charlie Sheen said, “You’re not paying for the sex; you’re paying for them to go away afterward.” And I’m sure whatever services he bargained for could be had for much less. But when you’ve got his high profile, it’s gotta be worth paying extra for a service that’s reputable (relatively speaking, within that world), knows which side their bread’s buttered on, and that you can trust to keep quiet. That’s what the four-figure budget covers. The only trouble was, these guys apparently priced themselves beyond even a rich guy’s ATM withdrawal limits.

Ladies, help a fella out here. How can Mrs. Spitzer stand by her husband and listen to him spit out a purely emotionless non-apology to the press? How can a woman stand by a man that has been having sex with strangers for six years? Can you say divorce? Infidelity is not something I can comprehend, I just don’t get it. I recognize that it exists, but I simply don’t understand how a spouse can stick around after such a deep and long-term betrayal of trust.

Don’t expect any satisfactory answer. All the psychoanalysis in the media won’t answer it either. There is a fraction of the population who are simply d***heads. Right, but I meant actual murder. You know, the kind that leaves behind non-consensual corpses.
Most of Spitzer’s “victims” would have been victimized just as much had he engaged in an ordinary, not-for-money affair–only then there would have been no criminal charges. Which doesn’t lead me to under-appreciate the difficulty something like this no doubt causes Spitzer’s family. But I can still perceive the difference between the hardships they’re enduring as opposed to that endured by, say, a strangling victim and his or her family.
Though I suppose mksmithwriter does get consistency credit for not just calling for the medieval stoning of prostitution clients, but of all “adulterers” in general, which I suppose would also include those who have traditional (i.e., not-for-money) affairs. I’m guessing it would apply as well to those of us who engage in consensual, unpaid sex out of wedlock (well, or at least would, in theory, were the opportunity to ever actually present itself…).
Blacklake on March 11, 2008 at 5:17 PM
The former AG who prosecuted prostitution rings and prostitution tourism, no less. Maybe they were nickel and dime operations which didn’t trade in such large amounts of cash?
I’d like to see some specific details of those prosecutions.
He may have gotten some ideas of how to conduct his “private” business with them through those prosecutions, but how he missed the automatic bank alerts to the IRS is jaw-dropping.
Heck, he may have gone after the nickel and dime operations and decided to save the pretty girls in the upscale ring for his own purposes.

You sure about that? I think they stone the women of the rich men, who committed adultery, and stone the poor man.
Same everywhere: People in power usually get a pass.
And I don’t CARE what any other country does. A good law is a good law. And I guarantee you if this was a law here – and was actually applied equally (like that would ever happen) be a lot less divorces and lot more respect for marriage.
Not to say all laws should have the standard of death as punishment, but the effect of the crime should conform with its punishment. The women in Spitter’s family will live in disgrace and have emotional suffering the rest of their lives.
mksmithwriter on March 11, 2008 at 5:20 PM

Very unlikely that Spitzer didn’t know about SAR’s. Lawyers (especially criminal lawyers) get seminars on these all the time. Seems more likely that Spitzer was just arrogant enough to believe that he could BS his way out of trouble if anyone became suspicious.

These people, of course, would have to live with roughly the same humiliation had Spitzer engaged in an affair with, say, his secretary, with no money exchanging hands and no current laws being broken. So I take it you’d advocate the additional criminalization of all extra-marital affairs? And for that matter pre-marital sex?
Blacklake on March 11, 2008 at 5:30 PM
Why did it take the Feds so long to figure this out? Maybe there’s a clue in the photos on the Emperor’s Club website.
The girls show off their bodies in skimpy lingerie, but never their faces!
So there’s no chance of some john’s wife meeting one of these girls on the street somewhere, and saying, “gee, I thought I saw her on a website on my husband’s computer”, and turning her in as a suspected prostitute.
Which is probably why Spitzer (and the other clients) were willing to pay so much for their services…anonymity and less chance of being caught, until the bills added up to 5 figures and the bank got suspicious!
Of course, if the bank records go back 6 years, Spitzer is a goner.
