Ferraro: Pickin’ on me ‘cuz I’m white! Update: Twenty-year flashback!

posted at 8:15 pm on March 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The strange case of Geraldine Ferraro continues. While even Hillary Clinton refused to defend her supporter for claiming that Obama only made it this far because of his race, Ferraro refuses to retreat. In fact, now she claims that critics only attack her because she’s white:

But far from backing off from her initial remark, Ferraro defended it and elaborated on it.

“Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let’s address reality and the problems we’re facing in this world, you’re accused of being racist, so you have to shut up,” Ferraro said. “Racism works in two different directions. I really think they’re attacking me because I’m white. How’s that?”

In Vegas, this is known as “doubling down”. In politics, it’s considered “suicide”. Regardless of whether it’s fair or not, whites don’t make a sympathetic victim class, so Ferraro’s whining does nothing to further her cause — and makes her sound like a bigot.

Ferraro has it both right and wrong here. Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are benefiting from a healthy dose of identity politics this cycle, and this appears to be a good year to play these cards among Democrats. The difference between them is that Obama has mostly eschewed that approach for his campaign, preferring to run as a candidate who happens to be black rather than as a black candidate. Hillary, on the other hand, has not just enthusiastically played the gender card but also has tossed a few race cards around the campaign trail as well.

In this environment, Ferraro should know better than to make statements that sound like she’s blaming Obama for one source of his popularity, albeit a major source. Did she expect him to hide his ethnicity, or to deny it? He may benefit from his race, and she may dislike that, but at the least he’s not getting hindered by it — and that’s undeniably a good thing. Crying that Hillary and herself have become somehow handicapped because they’re white may have some truth on one hand, but historically speaking, it’s laughable.

Hillary really needs to get Ferraro to keep her mouth shut, or at least to blame gender for the criticism.

Update: Politico’s Ben Smith notes that this isn’t Ferraro’s first ride on the racial merry-go-round. Guess what she said about Jesse Jackson in 1988?

Placid of demeanor but pointed in his rhetoric, Jackson struck out repeatedly today against those who suggest his race has been an asset in the campaign. President Reagan suggested Tuesday that people don’t ask Jackson tough questions because of his race. And former representative Geraldine A. Ferraro (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that because of his “radical” views, “if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn’t be in the race.”

One large difference between the two campaigns: Barack Obama actually holds a national office. Jackson’s run was his first major political race. She had more standing for that comment in 1988 than she does today against Obama.

Update: Johnny Dollar has a Geraldine appearance on John Gibson’s radio show in which she defends and attacks identity politics all at the same time.   She brings up “dark-skinned Italians” as a group that suffered racism in America, but then backs off when Gibson warns her she will wind up regretting that analogy.

Geraldine is just stating an obvious fact that we are all thinking but are too afraid to say.

SoulGlo on March 11, 2008 at 8:19 PM

What’s the controversy? Polls in Mississippi show that race was a factor, moreso among black voters than among white voters.

So, Hussein Obama and your supporters… if you want to stir the pot of controversy, why don’t you question why blacks voted more based on race than on issues?

madmonkphotog on March 11, 2008 at 8:19 PM

As Kaus said,

“And if Geraldine Ferraro was Gerald Ferraro, she’d be an unknown hack ex-Congressman, not a pathbreaking former vice-presidential candidate.”

That nasty race monster, Geraldine? Well, sorry, but you and your folks created it and now you’ve got to live with it. Yours is the party of racial politics. Your party has made ALL of the rules about discussing (or, er, NOT discussing) race and playing the race card. This is your fiery little beast and you’re just going to have to suck it up. And guess what, Geraldine? They’re going to call you a racist and you won’t be able to do a damn thing about it. Welcome to the new McCarthyism. I hope you like it. You created it. You just never, ever dreamed the little bastard would turn back on you.

I remember when Lyndon LaRouche, on prime-time TV, referred to “that slum lord Ferraro”. I don’t think he called her that because she was white or a female, but I may be wrong. Isn’t it great when liberals melt down?

Ahhh that’s where he gets you.

That’s the secret of the game plan.

That’s the trick.

That’s how he’s fooling you and others.

But if you read attentively his speeches and followed closely his attitude, there is no doubt that he is using the race card, the “affirmative action” type of game to get what he wants, the “you can make History”(his words) type of language and rhetoric.

It’s all practice till the real campaign starts. Once McCain makes a critical remark (which I think he’s afraid to do so) he’ll either get the gender or race card (book) thrown at him. Meanwhile, we’re seeing democrats as they truly are. But it’s hard to look in the mirror and criticize yourself, isn’t it.

I liked Flip Wilson’s “Geraldine” way better.

Someone should ask Geraldine about Obama’s win in Wyoming over the weekend.” It’ll make me laugh out-loud when she says it was all those black cowboys in Wyoming.

Like I said before, the “Equality State”, first state to given women the right to vote, first state to elect a woman governor, a state with a black population that can be counted on my fingers and toes, PREFERS Obama over Hillary.

A African American is seeking the office of the President

Very interesting to note that this Liberal Party keeps on

I think the name “Geraldine” hurt her more than anything else. Who would vote for a woman named “Geraldine”? Women named Blanch, Madge, or trannies, I suppose. They could identify with the gender confusion that comes with a name like that. In a week she will slip back into obscurity.

Obama wouldn’t be in this position if he was white? Does Ferraro not remember John Edwards? He did well in two election cycles and was the dems VP candidate after being in the Senate for, what, one year? Did he even serve in his state’s legislature? Edwards is the white version of Obmama and he got quite far.

Geraldine does have a bit of a Leona Helmsley vibe going on here. It would be funny if it ended up that Hillary was thankful for the troubles Clinton superdelegate Elliott Spitzer is in right now, because it takes the focus away from her actually having to comment/do something about Ferraro’s sudden desire to become the distaff Bull Connor of the 21st Century.

SouthernGent on March 11, 2008 at 10:18 PM

In this environment, Ferraro should know better than to make statements that sound like she’s blaming Obama for one source of his popularity, albeit a major source.

Exactly what is the “environment,” Ed?

One in which the Left measures and values everything in terms of race and ethnicity and gender and class? You better believe it.

And this country is going to continue to devour itself over these stupid distinctions as long as people pretend that that’s not what’s happening.

I really don’t give a fig about Ferraro’s motives in saying what she said. And I certainly don’t care what other Dems (or gutless Republicans) think about it.

What Ferraro said is true. Look back to Obama’s being “plucked” out of thin air to speak at the 2004 Dem Convention and since. Its all about his being black. Not politically or intellectually talented or capable. It’s all about his being black.

No way Obama would be the wunderkind that he is today if he were anything but African-American. That is the entire point of his candidacy.

seanrobins on March 11, 2008 at 10:47 PM

I didn’t hear Ferraro’s comment I only read it but it sounds like she is just being a smart ass when she says, “I really think they’re attacking me because I’m white. How’s that?” because of the “How’s that?” part on the end. It doesn’t appear to me she is really feeling picked on b/c she’s white. And she’s 100% accurate about her comments regarding Obambi.

DerKrieger on March 11, 2008 at 10:53 PM

Geraldine needs a sex change operation, so she can identify with the winning team. On second thought, that won’t be enough, will it?

unclesmrgol on March 11, 2008 at 11:36 PM

you’re accused of being racist, so you have to shut up

Welcome to the GOP, Geraldine. Nice to have you.

In a lot of ways I have to agree with the old lady, much as I hate to admit it. Obama certainly isn’t running his strong policy positions; he has none, and his supporters don’t give a rip. What’s left to discuss?

My point is further proven by the 91% black vote Obama got in MS tonight? His race, or rather his supposed race, is most definitely one of the primary reasons he’s winning.

fourstringfuror on March 11, 2008 at 11:37 PM

The modern left’s entire existence is premised upon genitals (unaltered or surgically modified), melanin content (or lack thereof, also see Obama denying his white half), epicanthic eyefolds, phenotypic darkness which attracts guilty whites who vote, and the imminent marxian cult of personality (and kinky hair). Gerry could run as a Republican, and her position is to the Right of the author of this post.

The racialism of Obama’s campaign has not gone unnoticed by Geraldine. My grandfather named his cat “Gerry” after her back in 1984 because he identified with her “Blue Dog” plainspeak and social policy, which is now much further Right than our current contender, our beloved Juanita. My grandfather fought in Tinian, Saipan and Guadalcanal, and he loved this woman. I believe Gerry actually has more balls than Juanita or Ed Morrisey.

——————–

Maybe I don’t understand. Are we disagreeing that Democrats play/vote racial politics? Because I don’t disagree.

Obama has only made it this far because of his race (and because of his party affiliation), whether he chooses to play the race card or not. I’d like to think that if he was Republican, he’d've been laughed out of the race by now, hopefully by Republicans and not just the media.

In fact, I agree that he wouldn’t even have entered the race if he wasn’t black, so he is, in fact, playing the race card. He knows if he was white he would have been laughed out of the race. He knew he was going to get favorable press. Isn’t that playing the race card?

Per your earlier post on this, Ed, how in the world is she being racist, crypto-racist, or any other -ist, besides sour grapist? Or hypocritical, since she was only a VP candidate because of her lack of a penis?
