Quotes of the day

“You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbour’s wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable experiments or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos.”
*
“I learned that God reveals himself through Scripture and in general through his creation, and when we destroy God’s creation, it’s similar to ripping pages from the Bible.”

I am glad to see any Christian Church taking a stand on environmental stewardship, it has been my experience that the only way to really move a Catholic is to make it a sin (unless its the Pill).
Squid Shark on March 10, 2008 at 10:35 PM
Don’t tell the Pope that the sun’s activity is in a slow period and chilling temps are on the way. If he heard that, he’d have to rewrite the “sins” and the world might think the Catholic Church is really just a political/business oriented enterprise.
Whoops. Was that my outside voice?
Aplogies to any devout Catholics who faithfully observe the lessons of the Bible and steadfastly ignore the political postering of their Church!

Well Mr. Merritt….I hope those are recycled pages you’re using for scripture. We wouldn’t want to sin against nature by unnecessarily raping the rainforests.
Cold Steel on March 10, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Since he does not mention Global Warming, I am assuming that you are just “pro pollution”.
And I suppose you think that the dominion over the earth given to us by G-d does not come with any responsibility for stewardship…
Squid Shark on March 10, 2008 at 10:46 PM
When the Catholic church starts cracking down on playing “hide the salami” with the alter boys then maybe I’ll see their leaders as something other than a bunch of wanna-be pimps who dress like they just came from a gay pride parade. I’m all for a clean environment but seriously, who asked them?
ErikTheRed on March 10, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Self-loathing socialists have already co-opted the green movement from environmentalists like Greenpeace. These monkeys are now infiltrating religion. This is an outright attempt to hijack our power structure by co-opting the “opiate of the masses.” Lenin and Marx would be proud.

I realize that picking and choosing quotes helps to sensationalize, AP, and therefore increase your traffic. But please realize that stewarship in the context of environmental conservation is prudent. This is the thrust of the argument.
While no Christian would not, nor should not, bow to Gaia, conservation of the Natural is God’s mandate going back to Genesis.
What you will not, nor ever hear is the Pope advocating the purchase of carbon credits.

I don’t have any problems with personal responsibility and stewardship. A man’s relationship with God is a personal one. It’s not one that includes governmental oversight or governmental management through taxation.

I’m actually rather serious. It was a pretty large black mark on their landscape. It is said that ‘change comes from within’.
I also find it strange that they think man has the power to control the climate in ‘God’s creation’ too. Isn’t that some what blasphemous?
drdroo on March 10, 2008 at 11:19 PM
I think these things can be more hurtful to ourselves than to the sensibilities of Providence. Common sense is always authorized. We should not “create” a world we wouldn’t want to live in, that prevents us from fulfilling our human potential, that debases us.
On the other hand, there is a saying about trying to pour new wine into old wineskins, and another about the doctrines of the past not being up to the needs of the present.
We are going to have to accept the fact that our ability to change the physical world has, for the moment, outstripped the stored wisdom of the ages. It may be time for new wineskins, in at least certain respects.

petefrt on March 10, 2008 at 11:33 PM
From the very beginning, God gave man stewardship over His creation. So you are indeed correct on that point.
Yet the one who denies God’s ultimate authority over His own creation is a fool. Especially those who seek to make a profit, or more revoltingly score political influence, by
twisting non-existent circumstances into self-benefit.
Science, like mathematics, can only describe what actually exists. Sure, we can use it predictively, but we do so by faith. Ironic, no?
Did you know that one volcano eruption releases more CO2 than all the automobiles that have ever existed?
Did you also know that Al Gore, et al, have become fabulously rich and famous by pimping the man-made global warming issue?
I apologize, I didn’t intend to be rude to you earlier.

Cold Steel on March 10, 2008 at 11:27 PM
Oh, I am really trying to avoid presuming what God did or did not forsee. Trust me.
Having said that, my gut tells me that we are, like all children growing into maturity, supposed to figure out some things for ourselves. I think how we handle our new technical abilities is one of those things.
Horatius on March 10, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Maybe thinking that God was unable to give us commandments sufficient enough to ‘guide us thru life’ ought to be on that list.
.
Can you imagine? What are they thinking in the Vatican?
Hey God….it’s been a couple thousand years ( it didn’t work 150 years ago w/ the whole 7 DEADLY sins thingy, but …)
…so we decided to add a couple of sins to the list to make Your children comply by making them feel worse.
.
From what God has given us and what Christ gave us as A WAY OF LIFE, there is NO DOUBT as to what we should and should not be doing.
Adding some ridiculous list to the Holy Bible is an absolute insult, and possibly a grave sin in itself.

Not a problem.
I’m actually aware of the volcanic eruption issue, it doesn’t seem to get discussed much. Cow farts is another one that only seem to get some discussion.
The term ‘global warming’ turned to ‘climate change’ and the current buzz phrase is ‘global cooling’ (which was a popular phrase in the 70s). I’m still waiting for those big hurricanes that wipe out civilization. They put a target on New England a year or two ago. I must’ve slept through it.
Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had hurricane remains blast through here, but they were trying to suggest something closer to Katrina-like magnitude.
I’d kind of like ‘weather’ to get back to just being ‘weather’.

Ordinary1 on March 10, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Actually, thinking about this some more–there is some guidance for us already, we just have to finesse it.
Let the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Virtues be your guide. Moderation in all things, as the Ancient Greeks believed. When it comes to all of the issues above–environmentalism, tampering with biology, or doing things of questionable utility–we have a lot of what we need.
One can be taught, but eventually one has to put that teaching to use.
Horatius on March 10, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Man, you guys are attacking the Catholic Church just like liberals attack.
The Pope is not saying anything about global warming. As a matter of fact, earlier in the year he said something to the effect that there was no science behind the Gore theories. What he is saying is that we should be effective stewards of our environment. I don’t think, when taken in that context, that there’s really any need to start bashing him. To those of you who take exception to what he said, do you disagree with the notion that we should take care of the earth? Or, is this just the ripe opportunity to act like a bunch of assholes and bash someone’s religion?
How wonderful it would be for you if you got just one Catholic to turn away from their beliefs. Yet, how pathetic you must be to be motivated in that way.

Fine. I’ll burn in Hell. So what.
Global Warming is like Religion. Neither can be proven, but much are alike.
If there is such a thing as a God, an all merciful God, a God who loves us, a God who made us in his image, a God who gave us the bounty of the Earth to be used as we see fit, then why is it a sin to use the gifts given to us?
There are 10 commandments. I do not recognize any addendum to the list.

Earth was made for Man; not Man for the Earth.

I didn’t misinterpret what I read. It seems pretty clear and without any sense. Common or otherwise.
The new seven deadly sins are those of drug abuse, genetic manipulation, morally dubious experimentation, environmental pollution, social inequalities and social injustice, causing poverty and accumulating excessive wealth at the expense of the common good of society.
That’s socialism. Pure and simple. You might as well bring back the inquisition then we’d be on par with the Islamic extremist.
Kini on March 11, 2008 at 12:18 AM
Jesus on Global Warming. Matthew 5:40
“If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.
James on Global Cooling. James 2:15-16
“15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,
16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?”
I’m kidding of course. I guess my point is that we as the church should be concerned about people’s souls. The saying that “people won’t care what you know until they know that you care” applies. IMHO the Body of Christ should be meeting peoples needs in a more direct way than addressing a green political movement. By serving people, perhaps they’ll want to hear about the loving God we serve. I think the Baptists’ hearts might be in the right place, but I don’t think the science backs them up here.

Kini,
This is not socialism. Pertinent to you the quote you cite is, (1)- the fact that this is not a direct quote; and, (2) the premise is selective and out of context.
Put simply, if you choose to selectively quote passages from the Bible, or even a newspaper article, you will miss the point. In toto is what is required.
I am not meaning to sound flip, but you have an acute misunderstanding of both sin and mandate, and to justify your argument by parsing selective quotes from an article is a poor effort.

Get ready for me to present my AMA card.
I am a lapsed Catholic, that has a brother, currently in Rome that has been studying to become a Catholic priest for over 10 years.
What I find insulting are the mindless posts/jokes about Catholic priest’s/alter boys since they are lumping my brother into the same group. Or people saying that it would be wonderful to “find a certain Catholic” when they have no idea what they are talking about.
End my AMA rant.
P.S.
My brother and I do not necessarily see eye to eye (I am more liberal then he is), but we have enough respect for each other that we can at least talk about it.
Hell I called the Catholic Church stupid and asked him WTF is the Catholic Church thinking? After the immagration issue.

If left to these loose interpretation. Here’s my problem with this:
By lumping the environment into this equation is liken to saying if you are F’ing the world as your neighbors wife. Might as well include the debauchery of corn for fuel. What a ménage à trois!
Second:
Yeah, I don’t make or have as much as my neighbor, so my neighbor is a sinner. What’s to say my other neighbor looks at me the same way I look at my other neighbor. That’s called Envy, a deadly mortal sin if I remember my 10 commandments correctly.
It may be selective and out of context, but people listen to the words and will take them literally. Just look at some of the crap from the Church of Global Warming. If you a denier, you are to be ridiculed and admonished. You are a sinner and ostracized as such.
The church as 2000+ years of dogma to use and preach. The church has it’s own problems from pedophiles, declining membership and fewer priests to preach the good word. By engaging in this topic they are proving that they have no knowledge or insight as to what is fact or fiction. By making it public they are loosing what credibility the church has left.
