Obama to Hillary: How come I’m qualified to be VP but not president?

Good question. The best answer, if any answer to that question can be called “good,” would be that he’s going to learn on the job under the sort of foreign-policy tutelage that only someone who used to pick out the White House drapes can provide. Was that the answer her campaign offered when pressed? Of course not. Theirs was much stupider, as befits the worst team money can buy. Apparently he’s going to learn all he needs to know before the convention — which means, I guess, that Democrats can elect him to the presidency without worries.
Today, on a conference call (still in progress), Howard Wolfson was asked that question and answered: “Senator Clinton would not choose any candidate who at the time of choosing has not passed the national security threshold.” But, he added, there is a lot of time between now and Denver.
When asked in a follow-up question if there was something Obama could do to prepare himself to pass that threshold before the end of the summer, Wolfson answered, “No, uh…it’s not something that I’m prepared to rule out at this time.”
The question at this point may be, how is it Obama is only leading these tools by 100 delegates?

UPDATE (Ed):
So what happened over the last few days? Did Obama suddenly lose qualification points this weekend by winning the Wyoming caucus? Or did the Clintons suddenly figure out that Obama would hardly be enthusiastic about pulling their bacon out of the fire with the coalition that has formed to support him?
Although it will hardly come as a surprise to Hot Air readers, it exposes the Clintons as political opportunists of the first order. They have made it clear that they have no interest in maintaining the viability of Obama if they lose to him. They are playing for an all-or-nothing win in Denver by positioning Obama as unqualified, and that allows the Republicans to use the same argument in the general election.
There will be no reconciliation. Denver has become Thunderdome: two candidates enter, one candidate leave. Be prepared for the chaos afterwards.
Exit question II: if Hillary suggested someone for VP who is that unqualified, what does that say about her own judgment?

I seem to remember a smaller controversy during the Clinton Admin where they were handing out security clearances like Cracker Jack prizes. Wolfson’s comment sure has that tonal quality to it.

The question of the day, but the exit question is - was she really qualified taste-wise to choose those drapes?
I think not.

I wish conservative pundits like noonan, bennett and ingraham would quit gushing over what a great guy barry is. From all appearances he is a sleazy, corrupt Chicago politician who is very smooth at disguising his race baiting and class warfare rhetoric. He has connections to home grown terrorists and received middle east money for his senate campaign. His mentors are known communists and racist black seperatists. He’s made a deal with sharpton and will owe him after the election. How are these people going to change their tune when he does away with hillary and is the candidate. Republicans shouldn’t be picking a prefferred demofascist. We should have all barrels blazing at both of them right now as well as the do nothing democrat congress. If republicans don’t watch out they won’t be able to stop this guys momentum and he will be making policy decisions on the advice of all these lovely anti American backers he has.

I must admit, if Hillary did choose draperies that could be easily cleansed of DNA, then such foresight could be equated with foreign policy readiness.

Questions –
Should Hillary try to run as an independent if she doesn’t get the DNC nod? Will the MSM badger us about that in the press like they did Bloomberg? (naaaah)
Should McCain extend her an offer of VP? Which would alienate the conservative wing he doesn’t have anyway but unify the moderates…
Skywise on March 10, 2008 at 3:03 PM
I going against the grain here, but I am predicting reconciliation and a deal…..since to these people, rules don’t matter, power does.
Your comment made me wonder about her pitch of HRC/BO. Is this a perverse way of bluffing saying, “……since I was willing to put you on mine, you will have to put me on yours or else…..?” It would seem to be a ploy to the “superwimps” to split the baby and ensure she is in power and save face even if he gets it….or she’ll rip the party apart?
Or perhaps that is nuts and she thinks she has it in the bag and she would never consider being second, but now I wonder. “Tell any lie to gain power” makes one question her every motive, and she has intentionally floated this……
After more thought, I think it is a play to the supers to split the baby and pressure him to take her for the ’sake of the party’ …..(or she’ll drag this out longer and rip us up - if, and only if, it looks like she will lose!)
Of course he would have to be mental to do so…..
Starlink on March 10, 2008 at 3:03 PM
With the rumors that HRC is willing to be Obama’s VP, it sets the stage for HRC to claim that Obama is unwilling to put his own ambition and cult of personality before loyalty to the party. HRC wants to be the team player, while portraying Obama as the diva.

I do believe that B.O. has told Shillary once and for all to take that idea of hers and stick it where the sun don’t shine.
In other words, the gauntlet has been officially thrown down.
From here on end, there will be blood.

Obama to Hillary: How come I’m qualified to be VP but not president?
If anyone else asked that question to the Clinton campaign, I would have thought it to be a softball. A nice, slow, easy ball right over the plate, just waiting to be knocked out of the park.
All the Clinton campaign had to say was that the qualifications for being VP are much lower than for pres. and that it’s the pres. who makes the tough foreign policy decisions.

I watched the video, since with BHO I usually don’t want to waste time and your description of it is good enough for me.
Rush and Laura have a point. The guy is really good on the stump. A Marxist for sure, but he could be selling red shirts to a Quaker convention and do quite well.

She’s kind of caught herself in a trap here though — what happens if she chooses an unqualified person, sure, but at the same time, wouldn’t the selection of someone who was heavily qualified be seen as making up for her own inadequacies? Six one way, half a dozen the other on the “is Hillary qualified” question. Answer either way is “not enough.”

Seems like a very rookie mistake (another) that he’s even addressing this veep stuff, in my opinion.
“blah not qualified for prez, but I’m qualified for veep?”
“blah i’ve won twice as many this and that, how does the #2 person offer the #1 person the #2 spot?”
Good grief, shut up already. Mention it, pause, smile, then move on. 30 second treatment, dismiss it as silly, move on.
But no, the rookie dwells. Hehe.

I take this to be Obama playing the race card with a degree of subtlety that must bring a tear to Jesse Jackson’s eyes. What he really is asking Clinton and Democrats in general is “How come you think a black man isn’t qualified to be President?”

Would anyone seriously want to be Hellary’s VP? He’d be in Bubba’s shadow, making him even less relavent (and more pitiable) than your average VPOTUS.
Would Hussein want Hellary as his VP? He’d still be in Bubba’s shadow, who would be even more reckless than he is now, while Hellary would be acting like she was 49.9% POTUS.

What links exist between Sharpton and Obama? I have an idea of the link you’ve made, but I would love to hear you articulate it.
We don’t have to lie and sell our political souls to beat this guy. If we listen to tools like you and lie about the man, we will ultimately lose.
I understand long term planning is not very American, but I think Republicans really need to think ahead on this one.

I’m quite surprised by the number of posts railing against Barry’s statement.
His supporters will abandon him and the party if he takes VP. It would be a huge insult, so taking it off the table is smart.
The way he has done it is pure genius. He is destroying the Clinton spin machine, they’re the one’s that look like arrogant rank-amateurs.
It’s easy to disagree with his politics, but discounting his political acumen is something else altogether.

Ditto, she should be taken out of the race, I hope her attachment to Spitzer gives her the rahs rahs and then some.
AprilOrit on March 10, 2008 at 4:22 PM
More importantly, this is “his moment.” GHWB, on the coattails of Ronald Reagan has been the only VP to successfully make it to the Presidency in generations. Anybody willing to bet that Hillary Clinton would be so beloved after eight years in office that she could turn the Presidency over to VP Obama for (at least) another four? Anybody? Anybody at all?
There is no way that Obama can take the seat at the back of the Clinton Express and come out well politically. He’s smart to make it clear that he isn’t even considering the option. The only way I can see it happening is if the convention brokers a deal and Obama can show great reluctance to do it but will “for the good of the party.” Even then, I think the chances extremely remote.

Exit question II: if Hillary suggested someone for VP who is that unqualified, what does that say about her own judgment?
Sadly, that is the question that should be raised by every credible reporter(hence, the lack of the question being asked).
Bill and Hillary have been involved in numerous business dealings that have resulted in rumors of wrongdoing, criminal indictments, and/or prison sentences for their subordinates. The Clintons’ popular excuse is that they did not know what their subordinates were doing. With that answer, both Bill and Hill have been given a free pass.
So numerous business dealings have failed, people have gone to court, people have gone to prison, and others fled the country to avoid going to prison, yet the two people in charge did not know what was going on.
Even if neither Clinton did actually know what was going on, how incompetent does that make them in a leadership role?
GREAT! Let’s make each the President of the United States who then get to select thousands of subordinates to run the country!
Awesome plan!
What could possibly go wrong?

A clean break from the policies of George Bush, in reference to the 3am phone call.. Earth to Obama, congress voted for the war in Iraq.. Earth to Obama you were NOT even in the Senate when that vote took place, double speak and double talk is what you did saying that pulling out of Iraq would be a mistake.
Chakra Hammer on March 10, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Obama said,
“The failure of the Iraqi state would be a disaster,” he said at a lunch sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, according to an audiotape of the session. “It would dishonor the 900-plus men and women who have already died. . . . It would be a betrayal of the promise that we made to the Iraqi people, and it would be hugely destabilizing from a national security perspective.”
