First the illegal licenses debacle, then the Internet tax proposal, now this.
Wife and kids, so schadenfreude isn’t in order.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.
Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He is set to make an announcement about 2:15 this afternoon at his Manhattan office.
Mr. Spitzer, a first-term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform and end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children…
Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.
Nice to have a sex scandal for once that doesn’t involve a Republican, eh? He’s due to speak any minute. Video coming. Stand by.
Update: Flip coins a phrase.
Update: Not yet confirmed, but the word from the New York Sun is that the ring in question is the Emperor’s Club, which was indicted last week. The timing of Spitzer’s announcement suggests he’s trying to beat them to the punch. Here’s the website. Which lucky lady or ladies will be the subject of a Barbara Walters special going forward?
Update: Prosecutors in the Emperor’s Club case say some of the women charged $5,500 an hour. How did Spitz come up with that bread?
Update: Incredible. Fox News says “sources” claim Spitzer’s on his way out. Mind you, this was a guy touted as a potential Democratic presidential nominee not long ago.
Update: Lawhawk e-mails to say that Spitz’s father is a real estate mogul so $5,500 an hour isn’t out of the question.
Update: Spitz is a Hillary superdelegate. Think she’ll be getting any awkward questions over this about high-profile politicians who cheat on their wives?
Update: Man, is this moving fast. Now sources tell Fox that Spitzer’s been indicted. Some new details from the Times story:
The governor’s travel records show that he was in Washington in mid-February. One of the clients described in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, the Emperors Club VIP on the night of Feb. 13.
Mr. Spitzer appeared on a CNBC television show at 7 a.m. the next morning. Later in the morning, he testified before a Congressional committee.
An affidavit filed in federal court in Manhattan in connection with that case lists six conversations between the man, identified as Client 9, and a booking agent for the Emperors Club.
Update: Here’s the Fox News story claiming that Spitzer plans to resign.
Update: There was supposed to be a press conference at 2:15 but MM e-mails to say she’s seen nothing more than a brief livestream on the local NY stations of Spitzer apologizing without admitting culpability. Here’s her impromptu transcript:
“I apologize to my family. I apologize to the public to whom I promised better…I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family”…No questions. No reference to the prostitution ring. No reference to resigning. No reference to indictment.
Update: Still more from the Times. Sloppy.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation.
The wiretap recording, made during an investigation of a prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP, captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9…
The affidavit says that Client 9 met with the woman in hotel room 871 but does not identify the hotel. Mr. Spitzer stayed at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on Feb. 13, according to a source who was told of his travel arrangements. Room 871 at the Mayflower Hotel that evening was registered under the another name.
Update: Via Slublog, the worst may be yet to come. Note the reference to unsafe practices.

Update: Here’s the video. No resignation.
Update: Cavuto is reporting now that the resignation will come later today.Update: Sloppiness by Fox — it looks like Spitzer hasn’t been indicted but merely named as one of the clients in the indictment against the ringleaders of the prostitution ring. Indictment coming under the Mann Act, perhaps? Stay tuned.
Update (Ed): This turned into a hot topic on the Ed Morrissey Show this afternoon, with Jazz Shaw contributing updates. CBS corroborates Cavuto — and says that David Paterson could be governor by 7 pm tonight.
Update: Radar reports that Hillary’s campaign site is suddenly Spitzer-free.
Update: Via Townhall, “Big deal,” says Dershowitz.
Update: The Times scours the FBI affidavit for details on “Client 9’s” rendezvous with “Kristen.” He’d used the service before, it seems, and was interested in pre-paying for his next appointment.

No problemo, I don’t think we can ever have enough euphemisms when it comes to prostitutes and Spitzer together…keep em coming! (er, uh, bad choice of words, seriously, no pun intended…?)
Liberty or Death on March 10, 2008 at 6:21 PM
This is kinda funny. Check out how the New York Times screwed up it’s own story about breaking the Spitzer story by getting the reporters wrong.
Moving on - if there are dogs, whips or chains involved, is it okay to make Abu Ghraib comparisons? :)

I don’t think so. Probably some plays showed the success of failed men or sociopaths, but even Edmund in “King Lear” paid the price. I’m not so sure Spitzer will. We’ll see. I have little sympathy for that scantimonious ass Spitzer, while at least Edmund grew up with the stigma of bastard. And Iago, at least Iago admitted his evil - and also paid a price.
But, admittedly, I’m no BS expert.
mksmithwriter on March 10, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Don’t see why not. But while Spitzer certainly attacked Bush when he could, he’s no national figure and will have little impact on the race. Clintons are already walking away from him.

How high a person flies means nothing except how far it is they have to fall.
One more sanctimoious person bites the dust. But in all fairness, both liberals and conservatives have had stark examples of people that frequently mismatching words against their actions.

Wow, you and I are seeing two very different videos. To me the wife looked obviously disraught, as if she had been crying). Her close proximity looked staged and required. I did not see anything like Sen. Craig’s doting wife on that stage. I feel horrible for her and her three daughters! THEY do not deserve public ridicule any more than Chelsea deserved the glare of publicity for a hound dog father!

Humanity? Funny. I have no sympathy for sanctimonious demagogues. IT’s not inhuman to feel that way. That’s not said in hate. I have no room for hate in my vocabulary. And while I”m an idealist, I’m realistic enough not to forgive the enemy until he/she is defeated and can do me and mine no more harm.
Sanctimonious is a word you should be familiar with, I’m guessing.

At $4,300 a pop, did Client 9 have to use State funds to pay Kristen for her “services”? If so, this is no longer a “private” matter–New York taxpayers are entitled to a refund!
In Connecticut, former Governor John Rowland was forced out of office for using about $9K in public funds to re-model his house. By the same standard, if Client 9 used State funds to have Kristen clean out his plumbing twice, Client 9 should also resign!

By the way. In the (increasingly likely) event that Spitzer resigns, NY would get it’s first black governor, and the nation would get it’s first blind governor in the person of David Patterson.
But, Patterson’s no bouquet of roses either. In 2006 he tried to propose a law (while a state senator) that would force prosecutors to charge cops with manslaughter if they fire their guns and don’t try to ’shoot to wound’.

I am not surprised at this. Gov Spitzer-on-the-people is an abusive, self righteous, bully who used questionable tactics when dealing with Wall Street (as I understand the situation)as attorney general, and as Gov, he used state troopers illegally to follow Bruno around. For people such as Spitzer, double standards are a way of life, it seems. He has never shown consideration, courtesy,or mercy to anyone. And he did proclaim himself “… F*&%$#* Steam Roller.”
I would be very surprised if he resigns. After all, only Republicans are supposed to resign while Democrats “move on.”

CBarker on March 10, 2008 at 8:45 PM
The politics of schlong:
There are three recent examples:
Clinton - Democratic President
The Democrat Mayor of Detroit
Spitzer - Democrat
There are two times when you can discern the true character of a man:
1. When the bullets are flyin’
2. When someone gets complete power
THAT is when you can tell someone’s TRUE character and what power and life means to them. In the case of the 3 above - it turns out that once they achieve ultimate Machievellian Megalomaniacal Power: It all boils down to their SCHLONG!
THAT turns out to be the FOCUS of their interest: not helping people, not making the world a better place - their JOHNSONS.
When they REALLY get full it - they unzip their pants and walk around with it hanging out - feeling that they have the God-Given Right to WAGGLE it in the faces of whoever they want.
THIS is what these people are ultimately about: The Politics of Their Schlong.
grtflmark on March 10, 2008 at 8:51 PM
It’s amusing to watch the Libtards on this. A summary of their reactions:
1. Right Wing Witch Hunt! (umm no, that applies to our tracking of the Hillary campaign, silly liberal!)
2. Prudes! Americans are prudes! We must be more like Europe (umm no, we must not be like a collection of fad-crazed, unreliable, weak-kneed, backstabbing, failed nation states)
3. Hypocrites! It was just a prostitute! What’s the big deal? (umm ya…maybe the whole marriage vow thing? The concept of fidelity? The concept of not risking your spouses health by your whoring around, mkay? Being decent on behalf of your kids maybe?)
But oh my…should a conservative be found whoring around on his wife…well let the critique flow!
And #3 above explains why Liberals feel they can warp the Constitution of the United States. They believe nothing is sacred in their pursuit of personal pleasure.
Liberals. ‘Nuff said.

He’s an idiot for throwing away his career and embarassing his family. I know a lot of people in the finance industry who are glad to see Spitzer get a taste of what he used to dish out.
The underlying offense is something that should be legalized, taxed and regulated. As long as it was in private and not on the streets, it was a commercial transaction where both parties got what they wanted.
dedalus on March 10, 2008 at 9:44 PM
Exactly. I say the same thing frequently, but it can’t be said enough.
Our nation is a Constitutional Republic, governed by the rule of law, where our legislative and executive representatives are elected (pseudo-)Democratically. I say Psuedo because the current “superdelegate” fiasco shows that it doesn’t always reflect the popular vote. We’ve also had several presidents who were elected with a majority of the electoral college, but not a majority of the popular vote. Most people know that Bill Clinton was elected twice without getting 50% of the popular vote either time.
Red Pill on March 10, 2008 at 9:46 PM
Whoa! I think that you are not getting that a male seeing a female prostitute — while certainly immoral and, in this case, illegal — is hardly “perverted.”
Now, as for the former (male) New Jersey Governor’s dalliance with a male lover — I will grant you: THAT IS perversion.
Words mean things. The woman caught in adultery was a sinner, but was never called a “pervert” in the Gospel of St. John.
sanantonian on March 10, 2008 at 9:49 PM
McCain should ask Hillary if she and her ex-Arkansas Attorney General and ex-Arkansas guv’nor the pervert Bubba “BJ” Clinton think ex- New York Attorney General (and hopefully soon-to-be ex-NY guv’nor) Spitzer should blame a vast conspiracy for zipper problems too. The YKK affair.
Agreement with those above that Spitzer is too narcissist a Lefty dirtbag to resign. Aside from dealing with his wife he’s probably already rationalized it in true Democrat fashion as somebody else’s fault. A faux victim’s charade by Spitzer is soon to follow. It will be interesting to see whether Spitzer’s wife chooses not to wither in doormat mode and agree look the other way as was Hillary’s choice (experience?) for Slick.

I guess that Spitzer (D) is no longer on Madame Hillary’s short list for USAG when she steamrolls her way back to the White House.
As a client of of this “escort service”, Spitzer set himself up for blackmail/extortion. With his “brilliance” in law, wouldn’t he be aware of the racketeering angle and money-laundering aspects of the flesh-peddling business? The arrangement that he had with this call girl, involved violations of the Mann Act snd fraud with the US mail via his payments. Was his alias, taken from the name of one of his big contributors, George Fox, an abuse of loyalty? Or was Fox complicit (wink, wink) in knowing about Spitzer’s shenanigans.
Pandering media such as Vanity Fair have been hyping Spitzer as a potential presidential candidate. Has Spitzer been overly zealous in his prosecutions in order to build his resume for the national arena?
It looks as if the Untouchables have the goods on someone who thought himself untouchable. Karma is delicious.

Vitter wasn’t governing a state and utilizing a criminal enterprise that he was aware was operating within the state he was governing. It’s about the crime, not the sex.
Even if a Governor placed a wager with a bookie that was working outside the tax system of the state, he must lose his job because he no longer has the authority to enforce any laws within the state he governs.

It would also be interesting to know who Client Number 1 through 8 are, and how high the numbers go after 9 and who they are as well. In a way, I love it when the rich and powerful who stand on pedestals bullying, berating, and talking down their noses at “the little people” later turn out to be whore mongerers and/or criminals.
I guess it’s because it makes me feel better about my powerless middle class self since I don’t buy whores for hire, or do drugs, or commit crimes and have higher morals (especially in the area of monogamy) than the rich & powerful reprobates.

Spitzer is probably a charter member with his portrait as Emperor No. 9 and a gold plaque attached denoting same. You can’t miss Spitzer’s portrait it’s around back of the Emperor’s Club right above the dumpster next to Bubba’s and probably Donald’s too.
Spitzer needs serious counseling and who better qualified than Revrum Jazzy Jackson his-self. Jazzy could bring his mistress on payroll, and his love-child and clearly ’splain to Eliot that if he’s gots ta cheat on da mizzus den puttin dat ho on da regla salary sho beats da dayum brothel scarfing alla yo’ dough. Or something like that.

I just can’t imagine his poor daughters having to go and face schoolmates. If I were them I’d beg “daddy” to send me to boarding school in Switzerland.
Already the jokes are starting. Jay Leno laughed about him being Client #9. Joking that if a governor only rates #9, he wonders who clients #1-8 were. David Letterman did a “Top Ten Excuses” for his bit.

Democrats only have to resign if they pray to or mention Jesus Christ in a non-cursing mode.

Was Mr Spitzer’s aggressive prior moves against prostitution aimed at reducing the competition for his preferred service? Just asking…

I take it those are not client numbers from the company, those are WIRETAP agents assigning numbers to the clients. So, as I believe, 1 and 9 could be the same person, Spitzer.
They just kept a running total of the clients each time they tapped in.

Also,he did not pay $5,100 or it may of been $5,600, I lost track because the number was never final, he paid $2,600, since he had such a hard time securing the escort, his $400 was not near enough to cover the trip from NY to DC, he set out to give “Kristen” extra money for to have more for a deposit. It was going to be $1,000, then Rochelle said $1,50, then she said to make it $2,000.
See, there was a lot of calls made and waiting on the deposit, Eliot could not afford to be making that many contacts, and they were working hard to close this deal and did not want to rick sending “Kristen” somewhere like this again and maybe get stiffed on the money, so a lrage deposit for next time was set up.

The typical, “do as I say” idiot politician.

A few things I was wrong on, it was the first meeting on February 13th.
It was $4,300
“LEWIS asked “Kristen” how much she collected, and ‘Kristen” said $4,300.”
Also
“LEWIS told Client-9 that his balance was $2,721.41, and that if he wanted to do an additional “150OU or even “2000″ it would be better.”
It was for 4 hours, though shestayed an hour
LEWIS told “Kristen” to text her when he arrived and LEWIS would start the four hours then, and also to let her know if he left early.”
Also, as I said, it was a complicated transaction.
“Client-9 repeated that his balance was ‘2600,” and stated that maybe he would give “her,” a reference to “Kristen,” ‘3600″ and have a thousand on balance. LEWIS suggested making it “1500fl more. Client-9 said that would make it “4100,”:

Wait a minute, found the work “Remind” he wanted to be reminded what she looked like. So, there may of been a first encounter, or she told him about her the day before.
“Client- 9 asked LEWIS to remind- him what ‘Kristen” looked like, and LEWIS said that she was an American, petite, very pretty brunette, 5 feet 5 inches, and 105 pounds.”
This is why I thought it was a second encounter earlier
“Client-9 told LEWIS maybe 10:OO p.m. or so, and
asked who it was. LEWIS said it was “Kristen,” and Client-9 said “great, okay, wonderful .”

I gotta ask: If this guy is such an elbow-throwing, bridge-burning, everyone knows Spitzer is an abrasive short-fused jackass, then why was he a wealthy and nationally-recognized AG for years who basically walked into NY’s governor mansion in ‘06?
Is this more of that charisma I keep hearing about? You know, the stuff I apparently don’t have since whenever I’m a jerk to peers and co-workers I get in trouble rather than rewarded?

LISTEN UP!
Everyone!
If Spitzer is a Democrat-Liberal, then it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS IF HE HAS SEX WITH PROSTITUTES, or engages in promoting prostitution, or any variation thereof!
Get it!
You see, if you are conservative, pro-life, and pro-decency, loyalty, and respecting your marriage, even though you are human and have your faults and make your mistakes, you are supposed to SHUT UP, and it is open season on you!
If you are left leaning, or Democrat, then you can do whatever you want, and conservatives, pro-lifers, etc., are supposed to just SHUT THE F UP!
Of course Spitzer was an abortion junkie who admitted during a debate that he favored late term, partial birth abortions, so he was working to help kill more innocent preborn babies. But who cares. It is HIS right to do what he wants, none of our business!

WayWard Fundamentalist Christian,
I just read Michelle Malkin’s main web site blog. It appears that Spitzer is anathema even to Democrats.
I am somewhat surprised. I expected an indictment against Christians, Catholics, Conservatives, Republicans, pro-lifers/life choicers, and anyone else that Spitzer and left wingers, Democrats, Liberals can indict for poor Mister Spitzter getting caught with his pants down.
I reserve some expectation of foul mouthed admonishing against the aforementioned groups and individuals anyway, with people supporting Spitzer, but that remains to be seen.
Take care.

Because he misused the law to his own advantage and became something of a killing machine when it came to silencing opponents and critics. Also at the time he was doing all of this, he was pretty much the darling of the liberal Democratic wing, so everyone pretty much turned a blind eye when he was using the power of his office to quash opponents. Now, for the first time, he is powerless, defenseless, pretty much abandoned by the same group that once held him in such high esteem, and is now facing the prospect of a destroyed political career, not to mention a possible destroyed marriage and his own life in ruins.
If he were still alive, Shakespeare could have had a field day writing a play about this guy.
