ABC: Spitzer led feds to prostitution ring, not vice versa

A point oft-repeated today but worth repeating again: How did a guy who made his bones prosecuting corporate criminals get so sloppy with the evidence of his own malfeasance? Every john knows you always pay cash. Always.

Or so I hear.

The federal investigation of a New York prostitution ring was triggered by Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s suspicious money transfers, initially leading agents to believe Spitzer was hiding bribes, according to federal officials…

Client 9 … is alleged to have paid for the woman’s train tickets, cab fare, mini bar and room service, travel time and hotel.

The suspicious financial activity was initially reported by a bank to the IRS which, under direction from the Justice Department, brought [in] the FBI’s Public Corruption Squad.

“We had no interest at all in the prostitution ring until the thing with Spitzer led us to learn about it,” said one Justice Department official.

Spitzer, who made his name by bringing high-profile cases against many of New York’s financial giants, is likely to be prosecuted under a relatively obscure statute called “structuring,” according to a Justice Department official.

Structuring involves creating a series of financial movements designed to obscure the true purpose of the payments.

His family’s worth millions. If he’s hot to play with hookers, why not grab a few fistfuls of dollars from the coffers and pay them with that? In fact, not only was he moving money around to pay them, he was pre-paying them according to the FBI affidavit — $4,300 on February 13 instead of the $2,700 that that night’s “services” cost him. I guess he figured that fewer, larger payments were less noteworthy than smaller, more frequent ones?

Here’s the Times’s account of his tryst with “Kristen,” replete with payment to Qat, and here’s the master article with running updates, now featuring the link to someone named George Fox:

The law enforcement official said that several people running the prostitution ring knew Mr. Spitzer by the name of George Fox, though a few of the prostitutes came to realize he was the governor of New York.

Mr. Fox is a friend and donor to Mr. Spitzer. Asked in a telephone interview Monday whether he accompanied Mr. Spitzer to Washington on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14, Mr. Fox responded: “Why would you think that? I did not.”

Told that the Room 871 at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel was registered in Mr. Fox’s name but with Mr. Spitzer’s Fifth Avenue address, Mr. Fox said, “That is the first I have heard of it. Until I speak to the governor further, I have no comment.”

Exit question one: Fox surely knew, right? Exit question two: Resignation tonight, do you think, or not? The big A’s betting — no.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s suspicious money transfers, initially leading agents to believe Spitzer was hiding bribes, according to federal officials…

So, the feds are always examining the financial affairs of politicians? If that’s the case, I’m amazed more aren’t indicted. I still would like to know how much money he has blown on hookers over the years. I’m not sure how to interpret the exchange. It appears Spitzer has used this agency before but not used this prostitute. So, how much, elliot? Fess up!

Off topic, but an update to the Utah tazer incident with the Highway patrolman and the driver who wouldn’t sign his speeding ticket, they settled out of court, the driver gets $40,000 and the patrolman was told to adjust his attitude, but at the same time the state has said the cop didn’t do anything wrong. So if the cop didn’t do anything wrong, why was he told he needed an attitude adjustment? And you got to love the state lottery, a few jolts for not cooperating gives you more than the average person in Utah receives in wages for a year.

I would be shocked if he resigned. That’s not in any Democrat pols playbook these days. A resignation would imply that he is truly remorseful about his hypocrisies, lies and crimes. I’m betting the only regret he has is that he got caught. He’ll probably make the pretty safe bet that the MSM will give him a pass and his constituents will start making excuses for him once the initial shockwave blows over.

In other news, the police in Amsterdam wants sex allowed in all public parks in the Netherlands. The police has advised the cities to follow the example of Amsterdam, De Telegraaf newspaper reported Friday.

Bill Clinton issued this Statement:

“That’s what I’m talking about. Seriously folks, if two horny couple can’t contain themselves until they get home, they should have to enjoy all their rights guaranteed under the Constitution of the United States to have sex in public. It is ‘Freedom of Speech’ in its Climactic form. Therefore, to set an example for all States, cities and towns in America, I will ask Hilary to designate the White House’s Rose Garden as an area of ‘Sexual Free Speech’ and to appoint me as Director of the Activities. Women who want to get laid in the Rose Garden should have the Freedom to do so under my supervision. And may God Bless America. Please vote for my wife. Thank you. Just what does a 2700 dollar hooker look like?

I think it was Charlie Sheen that once said, “you’re not paying for the sex; you’re paying for her to leave afterwards.” When you’re someone with Spitzer’s profile, the inflated fee most likely covers leaving, keeping her mouth shut, never calling you at home, and being careful to make sure nobody finds out.

While I’m glad to see Spitzer’s career ending, it’s a shame it’s over something as tawdry and stupid as this, rather than public outrage over his thuggish abuses of power.

Yeah, what’s the deal with the bank? I assume the Feds have some reporting rules they have to follow, because I don’t see them deciding to hang their own clients out of a sense of honor and duty.

It’s surprising that Spitzer would be unaware of such rules, and that he was generating interest with his transactions. He couldn’t simply have withdrawn the money and aroused (sorry) suspicion, could he? What kind of shuffling do you have to do to appear to be “structuring?”

Of course, I’m extrapolating from both my not-nearly-rich experience and my dad’s not-quite-as-poor experience, but I doubt too many people not involved in a cash business (legit or otherwise) have $15,000 or so in small, unmarked bills lying about the house. That would be a legacy of the War on Drugs. Any transaction or series of “related transactions” that is over $10,000 gets reported to the IRS. Also, a bank, casino or brokerage that suspects a transaction of over $5,000 is related to illegal activities (such as bribery) has to report that.

As you might guess, the smoking gun has the goods….

That document, an excerpt of which you’ll find below, describes hooker interactions with 10 johns, including one client who paid cash for a February 13 rendezvous at a Washington, D.C. hotel. The New York Times, which broke the Spitzer story, has identified the 48-year-old politician as Client-9. As described in the FBI document, Client-9 (clearly a repeat customer) apparently went to great lengths to arrange the illicit Washington encounter, choosing to mail money in advance to the ring, instead of using a credit card. Client-9, whose conversations were recorded by an FBI wiretap, would not do “traditional wire transferring,” the affidavit quotes one Emperors Club employee remarking. Additionally, the affidavit notes that after her appointment with Client-9 ended, “Kristen” spoke with a Emperors Club booker, who said that she had been told that Client-9 “would ask you to do things that, like, you might not think were safe…” “Kristen” responded by saying, essentially, that she could handle guys like that. He drops $4300 for the girl, but only $98 to ship her down in the 5:39 out of Penn Station.

Don’t tell me he put her on a metro liner?

Acela is the only way to travel from DC to NYC.

The guy is a dirtbag for making his humiliated wife stand by his side.

He’s toast. Period. He’s implicated in federal crimes and there is no way a former attorney general who climbed to the top on the corpses of his prosecutions and enemies is going to survive.

The search warrants have no doubt been served and I suspect there will be many more names that emerge.

He’s no doubt attempting to negotiate his departure in a way that will minimize his prosecution. I suspect there will be quite a few unanswered and unreturned phone calls from his rolodex.

Disregard he did, most likely booked on the Regional Service run.

Spitzer drew attention to himself with his big money transfers. By contrast, Bill Clinton flew under the radar for years with an endless series of $15 withdrawals.

Slublog, wine does not travel through the nose very well. Thank you for the experience.

Just what does a 2700 dollar hooker look like?

rockdalian on March 10, 2008 at 7:50 PM

What does the wife of a guy fooling around with a 2700 dollar hooker look like? Take a look at that classy, good-looking lady in the screen-cap. Why does she let the PUTZ! use her as a prop for his newly launched rehabilitation campaign? She ought to tell him to drag his 2700 a month hooker out there in front of the cameras with him.

Well Elliot, for once Yom Kippur will be a meaningful experience. You PUTZ! Stupid, arrogant SCHMUCK! One set of rules for you, and another set of rules from everyone else. Sounds “progressive” to me.

It’s a shame. As a member of the “Frequent F***ing Club”, he only had to get two more punches on his card for a freebee. I understand the rates are much cheaper in Sing-Sing anyway. Of course, you get what you pay for….

I’m pretty happy when I get that 13th coffee for free!

I never withdrawn tens of thousands of dollars in cash before, in a single shot, so I would not know.

Are you saying Spitzer blew thousands of dollars in a single shot? Heh heh heh.

Kevin71 on March 10, 2008 at 9:39 PM

So, the feds are always examining the financial affairs of politicians? If that’s the case, I’m amazed more aren’t indicted. I still would like to know how much money he has blown on hookers over the years. I’m not sure how to interpret the exchange. It appears Spitzer has used this agency before but not used this prostitute. So, how much, elliot? Fess up!

Blake on March 10, 2008 at 7:55 PM

Um…. The feds may always be looking but it takes a lot more than an unbalanced checkbook for them to go out with this kind of investigation. They were suspicious of bribes (may still be the case) so I’m speculating we aren’t talking about a few thousand bucks once or twice.

Exit Question: Be it David Vitter, Bill Clinton, Larry Craig, James McGreevy, or Eliot Spitzer…… What is it about having political power that makes these people think they can get away with infidelity or sexual perversion? If anything they are under more public scrutiny yet they ignore their families and ship in hookers or try to pick up guys in airport restrooms? They deserve everything they get.

Eliot Spitzer is a narcissitic arrogant prick of the first degree. He has made a career on attacking others for crimes far less than he has potentially committed. His public downfall and incarceration (if something illegal other than sex occurred) will be fun to watch.
