“The failure of the Iraqi state would be a disaster,” he said at a lunch sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, according to an audiotape of the session. “It would dishonor the 900-plus men and women who have already died. . . . It would be a betrayal of the promise that we made to the Iraqi people, and it would be hugely destabilizing from a national security perspective.”

Obama is starting to put John Kerry to shame on flip flopping

So…he’s trying to get to the right of Hclinton? I suggest that he get his picture taken in a “John Kerry bunny suit” while riding in a “Mike Dukakis tank”.
Actually, that would be my advice for Obama even if this were a post about Baseball Spring Training. Or Charlie’s Angels. Or Golf.

He is just now figuring this out? Maybe The Obama fainted himself and hit his head and thought this line might work….dunno, just a guess.

Ahh… just as everyone has said would happen. He knows he can’t up and pull out of Iraq, now he’s trying to give himself a back door to crawl out of. This isn’t going to help with Hillary still nipping at your heels bub.

I think the term is called failure to communicate!

Obama says:”the United States has an absolute obligation”

and,

“The failure of the Irag state
would be a disaster”

He’s got some fancy backpeddling to do,me thinks!

canopfor on March 9, 2008 at 10:15 PM

He probably went on to say that only a complete withdrawl from Iraq would prevent a failure.

Doesn’t need to make sense.

You might want to read before you post. He didn’t say that *now.*

He said that in 2004. Now he’s all about tucking tail and heading for the door.

This would make a great ad. You spit out a series of quotes like this and ask the audience who said them, George Bush? No. Dick Cheney? No. John McCain? No. It was Barack Obama. Then say something like, “Barack Obama, just another politician who’ll say anything for your vote.”

Such sober rhetoric has of course been lacking from the Obama presidential campaign, the candidate instead having opted for a “Surrender on Day One” platform

I think that it is a little late now to “Surrender on Day One”. I think that train left a looooooooooong time ago.

If Obama becomes Prez the best he could do would be to “Surrender on Day Two thousand, One hundred and Thirty” or there abouts.

And if Juan Plantation McVano becomes President and serves for 8 years, and Obama were to succed him, it would be “Surrender on Day Four thousand, and Fifty”, or there abouts.

Obama is not the only one to have had some kind of an “Epiphany”.

“The United States had an “absolute obligation” to remain in Iraq long enough to make it a success.”

– Barack Obama, July 2004

Speaking to a cheering crowd in Chattanooga, Tenn., one day before the Nov. 7, 2000, election, George W. Bush repeated a line that had by then been a standard part of the stump speech for many, many months — “Let me tell you what else I’m worried about: I’m worried about an opponent who uses nation building and the military in the same sentence.
See, our view of the military is for our military to be properly prepared to fight and win war and, therefore, prevent war from happening in the first place.”

I wonder if there will ever come a time when Obama’s words are actually read and understood by his supporters. It’s like he says something and they hear something completely different.

Obama: The failure of the Iraqi state would be a disaster.

What Obama supporters hear: I’m pulling us out of Iraq. the minute I get in, we’re gone. And oh yeah, free ice cream for everybody.

It happens to an extent with all politicians and their supporters, but it’s kind of scary how far they take it in this guy’s case.

To all those pointing out that the statement is from 2004, yes we read it too. The point is that Obama is campaigning on the idea that he’s been against us being in Iraq from the start and that he would begin to pull out immediately upon his prospective inauguration. This is what makes the statement suspect and a somewhat of a flip-flop. Additionally, Obama is showing a pattern of this type of behavior.

Pax americana on March 9, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Clinton would accept Obama as her VP, but Obama wouldn’t accept Clinton as his VP.

Obama has secretly promised the VP slot to John Edwards in return for his delegates.

(If you don’t remember, Obama made a secret trip down to Edwards’ house, intentionally leaving behind the press corps that normally goes everywhere with him) Also, money from Edwards’ big donors has already started showing up in Obama’s (not Clinton’s) coffers.

Clinton really has no plans of being Obama’s VP…she’s just hoping that by making this opening “offer” she can later expect Obama to also accept her “offer” for him to be her VP (if she can win buy-in from super delegates to support her and make her the nominee).

She wants the nomination, but knows that civil war would erupt in the Democrat party if Obama refuses to be her VP.

I agree that either of them is a gift from liberal hell. How many liberal Supreme Court Justices do you think would retire so that they could be replaced by Clinton/Obama? Both Clinton and Obama were among a group of only 22 senators who voted against both John Roberts and Samuel Alito!

Unfortunately, I don’t think that Mr. John “Leader of the Gang of 14″ McCain would do much better.

The only candidate who would put more Justices like Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas on the SCOTUS is Mike Huckabee.

Red Pill on March 9, 2008 at 11:25 PM

Condoleezza Rice and Robert Gates penned an op-ed this week to say it’s time to negotiate “a basic framework for normalized relations with the Iraqi government.” This, they wrote, will “set the basic parameters for the U.S. presence in Iraq,” which must extend past 2008 “for progress in stabilizing Iraq to continue.”

Has the administration’s policy of “surge till they (Iraqis) merge” changed to “keep surging because they’re not merging”? Unclear. At the same time, the new framework they envision will not set troop levels, make security commitments or authorize permanent bases in Iraq — “something neither we nor Iraqis want,” they added.

Me neither. U.S. forces should not ordinarily be engaged in nation-building — sorry, nation-stabilizing — nor should they ever be engaged in Sharia-nation-stabilizing, which is my core problem with our overall strategy in constitutionally Sharia-supreme Iraq as well as constitutionally Sharia-supreme Afghanistan (not to mention the constitutionally Sharia-supreme Palestinian Authority), but that’s another column.

Meanwhile, Rice and Gates are calling for more of the same — for U.S. “help” to fight Al Qaeda, develop Iraq’s security forces and halt Iranian interference. After that? They write: “In addition, we seek to establish a basic framework for a strong relationship with Iraq, reflecting our shared political, economic, cultural and security interests.”

If your next question is, “What ’shared’ political, economic, cultural and security interests?” I second it. The only unanimous expression of Iraqi political will I know of was a parliamentary vote in favor of Hezbollah in its 2006 war with Israel. Economically speaking, Iraq is not only an increasingly enthusiastic OPEC player, it enforces the Arab boycott on Israel. And when it comes to “common” cultural interests, Iraq is, as mentioned above, a Sharia-supreme state where one writer was recently found guilty of “blasphemy.” Given the Shiism Iraq shares with nuke-seeking Iran, how many security interests does that leave us in common?

BTW, Large Aged Cainine, in case you did not notice, and for this very thread, AllahPundit himself did not just quote, but linked to an entire story on another blog, so why don’t you say to him, “Have you no confidence in your own abilities to engage in debate?”

Of course I saw/see that your post was/is above mine.

And of course I gave my answer to what you posted after you posted. That is the way time flows – forward.

Do you want me to respond to what you have said before you even say it?

ALLAHPUNDIT:

clearly what obama and the dems have in mind is what they did to the South Vietnamese: declare victory and retreat/pull the plug — damn the results.

they care more about winning power to use it for carbon trading schemes and mega seiu/afscme govt programs, than defeating global jihad.

all their posturing and rhetoric is merely a kabuki dance: saying whatever they think will get them elected. when the war is gong badly then they’re against it.

and this goes farther than defeat being an orphan blah blah blah.

it’s about the dems being unprincipled – except when it comes to more govt spending and more govt regulation and more taxes.

for the common good.

and the good of seiu/afscme/carbon traders.

mark my words: if obama is elected he will pass a huge healthcare bill which will benefit the seiu/afscme crowd and be run by former mayor daley.

Thanks for your openness and honesty.

I’m glad you didn’t cross-over and vote in the Democrat Primary. I also respect your decision to vote for Romney as I assume he was the candidate who most closely aligned with what you want in a President. I firmly believe that people should vote in the primary for the candidate who they truly want. (How many Republicans who voted for Hillary in the Texas primary truly want her to be the next President?) I understand the games people play with the primaries, but I don’t agree with it. I firmly believe that the reason McCain is where he is now is the result of Democrats who voted for him in the primaries, but won’t vote for him in November.

I must have missed the edict that bans commenters from doing any quoting or linking.

It would be a shame if that were to happen as that is where most of the best stuff comes from. I know you probably think it comes from you and you are, of course, entitled to that view, Juan hasn’t gotten that deep into the First amendment yet, so you are OK, for now anyway.

Since you asked– my wishes for the country are: “neither”.
Hmmmm…a young inexperienced scummy sleazeball race pimp or an old petrified pandering political hack. Let me see..
If it were Left versus Right, there’d be no question who I’d vote for. I’m way on the Right side of the aisle.
But McCain is totally off the reservation, as far as I’m concerned. I can’t make heads or tails of his positions.
He wants to limit the budget, but then he thinks that increasing our energy costs by 30% is a good fiscal idea.
He attacks Romney for being from the “for-profit” world. You know, the world that funds McCain’s job..
My take on McCain is that he’s a decent Defense Secretary who thinks that he should be President. But there’s a big difference in those two jobs, and he’s just not Presidential material. Too screwed up in the head…
And he’s no “Maverick” -just a bullshite political big-government hack who loves to call himself that. It’s bizarre – Sort of like U2’s lead singer calling himself “Bono”, or some somebody from the country of Georgia once calling himself “Man of Steel”. It takes a special kind of egotist to do such a thing.
In any case, I’m sure not going to vote for Obama. You’d have to be a freaking idiot to do that.
Sorry – I didn’t answer your question, but let me ask you – who should I vote for and, at the same time, not feel totally disgusted in doing so?

I think not only is there a division within the democratic party, but your beginning to see a division within the mainstream media or “drive-bys”. This 60 Minutes interview will surely bring Scott Pelley a world of hell in which he is not accustomed to. We’ll see how this plays out, but I’ll be on record as saying that Mav’s friendliness with the MSM that Rush said would turn on him, is an exaggeration. Young impressionable, hungry journalist will do whatever it takes, but established dem journalist who favor moderation will actually bail him out in the end. again. The guys older than dirt, but didn’t fall off the political turnip truck yesterday.

Wasn’t this thread about the lying hack Obama?

I’m not a McCain fan, but given the alternative, this upcoming election should be a no-brainer to anyone with a brain. Lets focus people, focus on retaining the Whitehouse, focus on who will do the least amount of damage to the constitution and the country. Sooner or later something is going to stick to the Obama, we need to keep throwing at him and not each other.

I’m not sure, but I’ll bet that add was produced by Mark McKinnon. He was W’s add guy, who did the Kerry windsurfing add. He had originally said he wouldn’t work for Mav against Obama, because he liked Barak. I love the history of Ted Roosevelt. Most here at hotair think I’m a commy because I despise the son of a bitch Mitt Romeney. In actuallity, I am cool with wealth, just not down with those who try to buy elections. I pray that Mav wins this thang. He’ll do us all proud. Something about a Maverick that is very American. Go
get em John, I got your back.

Thanks for your kind words.
I’m a dittohead, to be sure, but couldn’t follow Rush’s advice and corrupt the Primary process, which I consider an important one.

This is an election, not Thermopylae.

Not that I don’t hate the SOBs – try being a Jewish conservative and hardass NRA member! You develop skin like a Rhino (that’s NOT “RINO”).

I just didn’t think that we Republicans should act like Democrats. If McCain can’t beat Obama on his own terms, then he better stop insanely attacking his own conservative base like somebody with Tourette’s syndrome.

He wanted this job, now he should earn it.

TexasJew on March 10, 2008 at 12:15 AM

TJ,

Obama has excelled at everything he’s done.

McCain has been mediocre at everything he’s done.

Not so crazy to give Obama a shot at the presidency.

TexasJew on March 10, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I realize that you were asking TheBigOldDog and not me, but might I ask why you didn’t vote for Huckabee?

I have yet to see someone say that they didn’t like his stand on the issues. It was always that they didn’t trust him. I understand some people don’t trust Huckabee, but do people really trust McCain (or Clinton or Obama)? If you have four candidates whom you don’t trust, why not at least vote for the one who commits in writing to do the things most conservatives want? If he doesn’t follow through, then throw the bum out in 4 years.

I still firmly believe that the worst of Huckabee would be better than the best of McCain/Clinton/Obama.
