Strike Two for the Times

Well, I know that people have waited for John McCain to blow his top on the campaign trail, but if this is what they wanted, I think those folks are in for some disappointment. The New York Times and other news agencies have passed this around the blogosphere as some sort of eruption, but I’ve seen priests with less equanimity during Mass than this:
I agree with Michelle about learning a lesson in dealing with the mainstream media. Obviously Elizabeth Bumiller wanted to trip his circuits; she pulls out a story in 2004 about the invitation from John Kerry to join his ticket, hoping to get a reaction. She’s not looking out for his best interests, quite obviously, but trying to be deliberately provocative. After all, wouldn’t that be a question to ask before he had sewn up the nomination?
But his reaction seems rather mild, under the circumstances. He’s annoyed, sure, but hardly spitting and cursing. By the time she asks “Why are you so angry?”, the question is so inappropriate that he asks her to repeat it — and she declines, hopefully out of embarrassment.
Interestingly, the Times now has tried twice to get his goat, and for the second time, they’ve wound up with egg on their face.

God gave old people the wisdom to find fault in everything.
TheBigOldDog on March 7, 2008 at 8:08 PM
Way to go OT. We are discussing McCain approaching Daschle in 2001 to switch parties and McCain approaching Kerry in 2004 for the veep spot. This and his treatment of the conservative base are all illustrative of his traitorous character flaws.
Valiant on March 7, 2008 at 8:10 PM
LOL. God bless them and you. Good night.
Valiant on March 7, 2008 at 8:11 PM
If all they’ve got is that he gets politely indignant when you ask him questions that are already common knowledge then maybe November won’t be so bad.
Of course the following year we’ll be flooded in illegal immigrants, but you take what you can get.
blankminde on March 7, 2008 at 8:12 PM
So in a case of “He said, He said,” you are taking John Kerry’s word over John McCain? That says quite a bit right there.
Mallard T. Drake on March 7, 2008 at 8:12 PM
McCain didn’t approach Daschle. His former aid sorta did so in informal conversations with his close friend who was a Daschle supporter, then Daschle called McCain to discuss it, and McCain said “no thanks.”
Kerry all but begged McCain to be his VP and McCain said he was flattered by the offer, but “no thanks.”
The former aide who got all this stuff back out there worked for Mitt Romney through the campaign, and perhaps still does.

Wait, where’s the vid where McCain gets all upset?
All I can link to is McCain refusing to play with an idiot reporter, something about a “botched Kerry”.
shooter on March 7, 2008 at 8:24 PM
It’s not for nothing that “Klymer” is a synonym for A$$*ole over at FR. Big Time.
gridlock2 on March 7, 2008 at 8:44 PM
I love how the press keeps acting as if America doesn’t know who the guy is. The lobbying story doesn’t stick because America knows Mav is against corporate influence. They bring up the Kerry vp story and again no dice, because Americans already know he works across the isle. America is very familiar with John McCain, there is nothing they can do to slime the guy. When they try it blows up in their face. Funny thing is though, they don’t care. The NYT’s could care less about profits anymore. It’s all about ideology. After the election you’ll see PMSNBC and the NYT’s clean house. Guaranteed.
THE CHOSEN ONE on March 7, 2008 at 8:48 PM
Hmmmm. I thought I had read that John Weaver the former McCain aide had taken a paid job with the Romney campaign after he left the McCain campaign a year ago…but can’t confirm that with google.
So, I was probably wrong about that.
What’s “Klymer”?
funky chicken on March 7, 2008 at 8:52 PM
I don’t care for McCain one bit, but he has handled himself very well and fielded all the stupid questions so far in a professional, mild, and PC manner. People seem to like that robotic behavior nowadays (especially the moderate rep (lib)commenters on HA that want to play the game to win disregarding any principles whatsoever).
I can’t believe that anyone would consider this plane exchange even the slightest bit testy. I mean, why don’t these morons ask serious questions, like quiz him on Edmund Burke or how soon he will start a new shamnesty movement when becoming POTUS. This reporter sounds about 16 yrs old and is attempting lame gotcha questions.
He should show the anger toward the media like he does toward conservatives. Give them a big FU moment here and there, then tell Hussein and Hill to “shove it” with their Marxist Liberal crap, then tell illegals to start packing it up, etc…(pure fantasy moment, I know)..
I’d enjoy that and would definitely vote for him!
nottakingsides on March 7, 2008 at 9:25 PM
This is the famous McCain temper?
Mattpat11 on March 7, 2008 at 9:32 PM
That’s what I thought too. I was perhaps a fool, but I kept waiting for Sen. McCain to go red-faced and it didn’t happen. It’s like that Mitt Romney Mormon interview from a while back.
The media these days never fails to disappoint. Nothing much has changed since William Randolph Hearst used to hire women to go out and “faint” in the streets on slow news days.
Wayne Clark on March 7, 2008 at 9:44 PM
If it had been Harry Truman, first she wouldn’t have been on the plane after what the NYT did previously. Second, he would likely have slapped some sense into her arrogant liberally poisoned brain. If it had been me I would have told her on camera to look for another gig as she was finished on this campaign.

Ed. Ed, Ed, Ed. I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but: you are waay too fair, balanced, and mature.
All that wasted verbiage, when you could have said: It’s E. Bumiller, of the New York Times.
It’s the Times, Ed; it’s what they do. There is absolutely no need to give them the benefit of the doubt or build up a case of bias, for each of the innumerable instances of bias.
I know that you know all of this. And yet you persist in being fair, balanced, and mature. That is one of the disadvantages that conservatives and Republicans have in dealing with the media and the Democrats and the liberals.
Just wade in and start throwing haymakers, for crying out loud.
misterpeasea on March 7, 2008 at 9:53 PM
This is Strike 3 in my book, because it seems you forgot about the NYT hit piece they ran a week after the 1st with bring up the 8 year old news about questioning if he can be President because he was born in Panama.
McCain’s Canal Zone Birth Prompts Queries About Whether That Rules Him Out
What I don’t understand is why he is bothering to allow a NYT reporter to fly on his plane still.
JeffinSac on March 7, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Personally, I think small outbursts like this show that McCain is not some robotic politician, but a passionate person who will not suffer liberal idiots.
William Teach on March 7, 2008 at 10:03 PM
It bothers me to no end that he is our candidate, and now here we are defending him from lame attacks from the media. It’s like the world is turned on it’s ear right now.
samuelrylander on March 7, 2008 at 10:09 PM
MSM would make this into some kind of confirmation of its narrative on McCain’s temper.
Well, get this: MSM would outlaw conservatives defending themselves, period. What we saw from McCain is hardly temper. What this is, is standing up against propagandists and smear merchants.
If this is temper, I’m hoping there’s more where it came from.
Bravo, McCain.
petefrt on March 7, 2008 at 10:16 PM
The only reason he is mad is because he got caught in a lie. How ironic during the primaries he called Romney a flip flopper, while if you look at his record, he’s the worst of the bunch, GOP and Dem. And I bet he’ll snap at a debate.
menoname on March 7, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Wow! He is such a “maverick” for saying he won’t answer an idiotic question. Whoop-de-doooo!
You people have really lowered your standards for what is considered “standing up” for something.
He’s sucked up to the MM and Libs for years. Just now he says he won’t answer something. So what! I don’t fall for the latest narrative that fits the McCain fanatics.

CliffHanger on March 7, 2008 at 11:10 PM
blast! Those dastardly liberals at the NYT’s have tried yet again to get McCain’s goat with their “questions” and “reporting”. Luckily it appears he has gotten the last laugh and evaded them again! What’s more, they now have egg on their face! Egg! The right wins again and the NYT now will have to retreat into the shadows and lick their wounds, taking solace in their 95 Pullitzer prizes and massive readership! Victory!

John McCain doesn’t have to explain private conversations where he conspired with the rats against the Republican Party. How dare anyone ask him about that.
Buddahpundit on March 8, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Obama would have just walked away from the confrontation.
Hillary would start crying.
I’ll take McCain’s response any day. Who think he’s angry? He’s just putting her down.
desertdweller on March 8, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Can they make it any more obvious that they’re trying to make him look bad? These people are pathetic.
bojack on March 8, 2008 at 12:29 AM
The “Why are you so angry?” question was obviously one Bumiller had prepared in advance, assuming that she would be able to get to him by jabbing at his credibility. She must have figured he would either begin heatedly denying Kerry ever asked him the question, or that he would call the reporter who wrote the original story a liar.
Instead, John said an a very measured way that everyone in the country knew the conversation had taken place, that it was a private conversation which he would not discuss, and did she have another question. Not knowing quite what to do, and unable to get a response out of him, Elizabeth prematurely fired off her “finisher” line, to which McCain did not respond at all — he merely asked her to repeat the question.
The funny thing is, he may not have actually heard her question, but she must have realized that the moment had passed, and at that point it was better to simply fold up her tent and retreat. But in the process, she actually came off sounding ackward, a little like Emily Litella! Never mind! Ha!
Game, set, match!
By the way, CNN, per Dana Bash, gamely rehashed the whole incident for everything they could squeeze out of it, characterizing him as “testy” and quoting several unnamed Democrat Senators as jumping on the “incident” and calling him “Senator Hothead.”
This is not going to be a pretty year. It’s only early March, and some in the press are already openly going for the jugular. But if John succeeds in continuing to deflect these blatantly partisan shots early on, it will build support or at least a sympathetic ear for him across the board.

CCR, the NYT has been loosing readers for years. They have only remained afloat because of their other publications (like the only slightly less worthless Boston Globe.
Its childish hit pieces that they run every election year like clockwork are pitiful and get sadder every election cycle as America ditches them for the internet. I recall a story a few years ago that when Drudge dropped them as the primary link, their online readership dropped dramatically.
Squid Shark on March 8, 2008 at 1:57 AM

So you think that if the NYT forces McCain to withdraw from that race that we will win?? YOu might was well go third party because your chances would be better that way.
Give up the ghost, the “RINO” or Moderate wing of the party have had your asshat candidates shoved down our throats for 20 years, we have stuck with them because it was in accordance with our general goals, well maybe it is time one of our guys got in. It looks to me like “Fighting John McCain” handled this twit just fine. Keep it up John we need ya!
Rick554 on March 8, 2008 at 10:10 AM
The New York Times has been trying a new slime tactic against McCain in the last two weeks. The new party line at the Times is that the John McCain of 2000 was a great man, a true maverick, a man of the center. But the John McCain of 2008 is now a right wing dingbat who has lost his moral compass. The new party line at the Times was started by Frank Rich last Sunday. He wrote that the old McCain was against Bush and Limbaugh but now McCain is catering the right wing. Then the Times has a huge article by the scriptwriter for the television program “Family Ties”. The guy wrote a long article about how Alex P. Keaton could support the McCain of 2000 but not the McCain of 2008. So the Elizabeth Bumiller attempt to set up McCain so she could show him to be a liar was part of the pattern at the Times. McCain recognized the setup immediately. Bumiller tried to get McCain to commit to a timeline of something that may have happened four years ago. Then, having trapped McCain, she could scurry to the Times archives and prove him a liar. This is what passes as journalism at the Times. I noticed how lovey dovey the press corps is with Obama on his plane. The reporters even buy chocolates for the Obamas.
Larraby on March 8, 2008 at 10:14 AM
If the Times really wants to “get” McCain, they’ll do a story on his hypocritical courtship of that “end-of-times” anti-catholic preacher.
While the right has attacked Obama for belonging to a “black” church that does not preach any sort of bigotry, McCain’s been cozying up to an anti-catholic bigot who believes the inevitable war with Iran with bring about the Armageddon.
This video is not an attempt to “get” McCain. Ed, the writing on this is very weak… speculative… words like “obviously” tend to signal a weak argument.
The TRUTH is, you have no idea what the NYTimes motives are, you don’t know Bill Keller or what his intentions are. If releasing this video was and attempt to paint McCain as a hot-head, as you point out, it’s not a very good video to use as evidence. If they really wanted to show he was a hot-head, they would have not pushed this video (if indeed they actually did). Like much of what’s written on political blogs, this is speculation passed off a truth. The more sort of stuff is pushed, the more reality gets lost. But I’ll leave you now to wait for the next Drudge report to spin into your anti-left narrative.
Tom_Shipley on March 8, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Guys,
There’s no evidence showing that the NYTimes is out to “get” McCain. Newspapers write about and criticize politicians all the time. McCain has had it easy over the past few months when it’s come to press coverage. It’s a joke that every time McCain or a Republican is scrutinized by the press, you guys get your undies in a bunch and yell about a MSM conspiracy to “get” your guys. Bitching about this video and calling it “strike 2″ by the Times is just absurd. grow up a little.

Branch Rickey on March 8, 2008 at 8:30 PM
There has never been any evidence that McCain either approached Daschle about going democrat or joining with Kerry as VP.
There were some stories democrats have floated, but since they want to wreck McCain, that is not so surprising.
What is puzzling is how people claiming to be Conservative keep working to keep stories about McCain’s alleged disloyalty alive.

Squid Shark on March 8, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Think real conservatives will vote for John McCain? Don’t count on it.
In the same pages, novelist Mark Helprin, a former adviser to Robert J. Dole’s presidential campaign, savaged conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin for daring to speak out against McCain.
Yet through his surrogates, McCain is attacking these leaders. This is beyond folly. It is political suicide.
Ironically, the man who survived this intramural scrum is the one who arguably least qualifies as a Reagan conservative. He claims to be a champion of freedom but gave us McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform — which, by limiting free speech during elections, is perhaps the greatest infringement ever on the First Amendment. He claims to be a champion of U.S. sovereignty but offered us the McCain-Kennedy immigration reform bill that would give millions of illegal immigrants the chance to become citizens; that’s amnesty, no matter how much he denies it. He claims to be a champion of the unborn but has waffled in the past, supporting federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. This year, he won the endorsement of Republicans for Choice. He claims to be a fiscal conservative who will make the Bush tax cuts permanent, but he also voted against them.

I’m no big fan of his, but I really like the way he handled her. Cowering to these media people emboldens them.

Yes, Mr. Condescending Squid, I do know to what you are referencing. Do you understand “war-time” vs. 60 days before an election?
Thanks to McVAIN and his slush fund pals running an issue ad will get you more than just imprisonment. Heck, Rush Limbaugh got censured by the senate. Wake up. You obviously fought for freedom and so now is probably not the time to be blinded by a wolf in sheep’s clothes.

Indeed I do, however I still think that the A & S act was a FAR greater attack on 1st Amendment Rights (the Quasi-War was a pretty shoddy excuse) than McCain Feingold. Also, where does it say your firs amendment rights go away in time of war?
Who says its ok to jail journalists and editors? Not meaning to condecend but I didnt think we were connecting very well on what I saw as the issue.

So now the only press McCain gets is fighting the NY Times.

Better than nothing.

Red Pill,
I would have strongly recommended going back and examining the last 12 months of Dick Morris’ columns, and transcripts of his opinions from interviews (e.g., O’Reilly), prior to citing him as a prognosticator of any merit. At one time or another, Dick Morris has nearly opined every possible viewpoint, and has pronounced each with all the seeming authority of Moses himself, as to what was definitely going to happen come the end of the week!
The only problem has been that in expressing those various and several prognostications, Morris has virtually littered the political landscape with busted predictions!
Here is just one — I’m paraphrasing, but he said it repeatedly: Unless Condi Rice gets into the race, Hillary will be the President come January, 2009.
So, citing him for what will now happen, is a little like buying a lottery ticket — eventually you might be proven right!

Next headline: “Is McCain a Vampire”?
Some analysts say that could explain his amazing vigor on the campaign trail at the age of 72….
