On Hillary’s turf

David Brooks has a warning for Barack Obama — fighting on Hillary Clinton’s terms won’t help. After unexpected losses in Ohio and especially Texas on Tuesday, Obama seems to have finally agreed that he needs to go negative against Hillary. He needs to show he can win a boxing match, but Brooks warns that the Clintons don’t play by Marquess de Queensbury rules:

The Obama people seem to have persuaded themselves they can go on the attack, but in the right way. They can be tough and keep their virginity, too. But there are more than five long months between now and the convention.

Unless they consciously reject conventional politics, the accusations will build on each other. The BlackBerries will buzz. The passions will rise. The Obama forces will see hints of Clinton corruption all around, and they’ll accuse and accuse again. The war will begin to take control, and once you’re halfway through you can’t suddenly surrender because it’s become too rough.

And the Clinton people will draw them every step of the way. Clinton can’t compete on personality, but a knife fight is her only real hope of victory. She has nothing to lose because she never promised to purify America. Her campaign doesn’t depend on the enthusiasm of upper-middle-class goo-goos. On Thursday, a Clinton aide likened Obama to Ken Starr just to badger them on.

As the trench warfare stretches on through the spring, the excitement of Obama-mania will seem like a distant, childish mirage. People will wonder if Obama ever believed any of that stuff himself. And even if he goes on to win the nomination, he won’t represent anything new. He’ll just be a one-term senator running for president.

Obama has coasted on “hope and change” for months, ascending into front-runner status on the basis of personality and platitudes alone. Given the high negatives of his opponent, that’s all he’s really needed, and it took Hillary’s team several weeks to figure that out. Hillary tried besting Obama at New Politics, and no one bought it for a moment. Now she has reverted to type, and hopes to get Obama to follow her.

The virginity analogy is especially apt, for two reasons. One cannot start off practicing New Politics, then start slinging mud, and have any credibility to return to New Politics later. Once that virginity is lost, it’s gone forever — and given some of the reporting from the Rezko scandal, one could wonder whether it existed in the first place. Secondly, the naivete of the Obama campaign falling for Hillary’s ploy bolsters uncertainty whether Obama really has the skills to win a national campaign, at least at the moment.

In a sense, though, Obama made it possible for Hillary to adopt this strategy. The Rezko trial always promised to provide some juicy details into Obama’s relationship with the Chicago fixer, and just in the opening motions already showed that Tony Rezko had found public-office sinecures for Obama’s staffers. Even worse, the self-inflicted wound of the NAFTA Dance made him look like just another double-talking politician, and it gave Hillary an opening to exploit.

In politics, strategists often advise candidates to go after the strengths of their opponents rather than their weaknesses. Drawing Obama into a negative campaign does just that — it undermines his only real strength, his representation of New Politics. If he loses that, he has nothing left to offer except the platitudes, and by that time he won’t have enough credibility left to sell them.

UPDATE: Don’t forget to check out NZ Bear’s Rezkorama for updates on the Rezko trial in the news media and blogosphere.

Sounds good to me.

David Brooks has a warning for Barack Obama

Thatt’s it. And I stopped reading.

Why should I care about someone giving advice to an empty suit, Muslim, America-Hater, Anti-Semitic?

Indy Conservative on March 7, 2008 at 8:56 AM

“The Blog” has been moved to under “Hot Topics”. Drag-n-drop error?

natesnake on March 7, 2008 at 8:57 AM

An apt analogy, yet distasteful and revolting … considering the subjects that is.

Maquis on March 7, 2008 at 8:58 AM

The continuing spoof that Obama represents naivette, and virginity. This comes up so often from even right wing bloggers that it seems every one is using the same script.

Sen. Obama’s wife is doing some damage to her husband’s campaign efforts all on her own. Barack H. Obama’s first correction should be to put a muzzle on her. Then, he should just point out the personal attacks of Hillary R. Clinton each occurrence, and pledge to stay above the sewer level tactics. Hard to do, yes, but he will not be able to compete with the designers and perfectors of the “politics of personal destruction.” In the end, though, both these candidates will be weakened as standard bearers for the Democrats, and McCain will make up considerable ground over the next few weeks. I hope I live long enough to read the histories of this campaign, both real and revisionist. It will be a treat.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ.I am furious with Fox News! This morning, between 6:00-6:30am EST, I was watching the Fox News crawl. I was stunned to read the following: “Gunman opens fire in Jerusalem, killing 8 and wounding 9, before he was MURDERED by a soldier.” Murdered! Can you believe that??!! I am e-mailing Fox and anyone else I can think of, to say how outraged I am and to let them know that they are getting as bad as any of the other MSM idiots! Please take a moment to express your disappointment to Fox.

Not only that. But did you notice lately how the Fox “pundits” are elevating Hussein Barack to a heavenly status?

O’Reilly is accusing NBC of rooting for Hussein, yet he is ignoring the crowd of His own channel. What a hypocrite!

I just don’t get the meme that has been out now for about a year that the Dems have such an advantage this year. Huh? Does anyone really believe that either of Hilly or The Messiah’s backers are going to simply hold hands and sing kumbaya when this is done? At least half of the Dems HATE Hillary. And whatever “serious” people are left in the Dem party have to look at Obama when this is said and done and say, “What the Fuh?… What did we do here?” And after all of the moaning and gnashing of teeth about Maverick, the Repubs have accidentally ended up with a guy who is the strongest candidate to take either of them on. Remember that the Dims are still running against Bush. Please, nobody remind them that W isn’t on the ballot this year. Hell, if anyone has a track record of battling Bush, it’s Mav. While that infuriates many on our side, it inoculates him with many.

Sugar Land on March 7, 2008 at 9:11 AM

I am with you Sugar Land. When Hillary steals the nomination at the convention, by using the super-delegates. She will have twarted the will of the people and it will split the party. With Ralph Nader siphoning off the far left, eco-wackos and other assorted leftnuts, it will be McCain, in a very tight, very contested election. I then expect the leftnuts to go crazy and say the Republicand stole the third Presidential election in a row. It won’t be pretty, it quite possibly could get violent and ugly. Sheesh, what the hell happened to our country?

deadbackpacker on March 7, 2008 at 9:19 AM

Hillary is an old-school street fighter with a team full of old-school, top-notch dirty tricksters. Trying to out-nice Barrack Obama would be foolish for her. Drag him down to her level and beat him with experience. He won’t fair as well when he is no longer the annointed one, Barrack Muad’dib.

Nonsense?? False accusations??

I’ve written before, but maybe you weren’t around, on how Hussein Barack is truly a Muslim, whether he denies it or not.

I don’t feel like repeating it.

And what do you mean by “not helping anyone?”

Telling the TRUTH transcend anyone.

Sugar Land on March 7, 2008 at 9:11 AM

Uh…yea. They certainly won’t sing kumbaya, but the vast majority will pull the lever for either opponent, just like the vast majority of conservatives will pull the lever for McCain. All Dems know they’ll get an anti-corporate, anti-military candidate who’ll nominate hard-left, “living Constitution” judges. I put this one at a “Duh…”

eeyore on March 7, 2008 at 9:51 AM

Regarding Fox News — for any large media organization, over time they will track more and more to the left. My guess is that the new hires from college have all been totally indoctrinated in Leftism, and the professional hires have to come from guess where — MSNBC/CBS/NBC/ABC affiliates so have been steeped in the Leftist media culture for years. So of course Fox is more Left of where they were 10 years ago. In another 10 years they will be no different than CNN.

Shouldn’t that be WENCH warfare instead of trench warfare?

“The virginity analogy is especially apt, for two reasons. One cannot start off practicing New Politics, then start slinging mud, and have any credibility to return to New Politics later. Once that virginity is lost, it’s gone forever”………

Does this mean that when I was just “practicing” having sex with a condom on, I wuz really losing my virginity? Does this also mean that Bill’s “supposed” infidelity led to loss of credibility that Mrs. Clinton once embraced? Can’t we some how blame this loss of virginity on Karl Rove or Ken Starr or even Richard Nixon?

Rovin on March 7, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Hillary will be the nominee. There is a lot of time yet.

wepeople on March 7, 2008 at 9:06 AM

If that happens, it’ll be interesting to see the rift that develops between the black community and the Democrat party as black’s realize the Dems have never actually been on their side. I’m telling you, brown is the new black.

Fighting Hillary on her own turf is a big mistake for Obama. He’s going to get savaged, he’s going to look mean, and he’s going to be bringing a hamster to a dog fight.

I can’t wait.
