Hillary: You want him on that phone! You need him on that phone!

Rasmussen calls a Code Red (Phone) on the Hillary Clinton “3 AM” ad:
Before Hillary Clinton was declared the winner in Texas, most American voters had read, seen, or heard about her 3:00 a.m. telephone commercial. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 43% had seen at least part of the commercial which was played incessantly on news networks and other outlets for days. Another 16% had heard something about it and the overwhelming majority (81%) correctly identified Hillary Clinton as the candidate whose campaign ran the commercial (see the commercial).
The commercial was credited as one factor enabling Clinton to turn her campaign around in Texas last week. But, 42% of all voters said the person they’d most want to answer the phone was John McCain. Among all voters, 25% picked Clinton and another 25% named Obama as the person they’d want in the White House when a foreign policy crisis call arrived. …
Among unaffiliated voters, 39% said McCain would be their top choice to handle such a crisis. Twenty-seven percent (27%) of unaffiliateds said they thought Obama was the best to handle the call while 18% named Clinton.
Oops. Looks like this one backfired on Hillary in the long run. Pundits gave credit for her win in Texas to the “3 AM” ad, but its beneficial effects for Hillary have been short-lived. She only has a nine-point advantage among Democrats on the phone-call-in-the-middle-of-the-night question, but she has put both herself and Barack Obama at a serious disadvantage with regards to John McCain. The question appears to have awakened the electorate to the fact that Presidents do more than talk about hope, change, and handshaking.
The crosstabs are absolutely hilarious. John McCain beats both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama among women, but he creams them among men — 51% for McCain, 19% for Hillary, and 21% for Obama. He wins in every age category except 18-29 year olds, and tops both in unaffiliated voters and self-described moderates, which both Democrats need. It’s as if Hillary decided to start campaigning for John McCain.
The best part? John McCain didn’t have to lift a finger to make this the centerpiece of the presidential campaign. He’s ready to exploit it, though, with a new campaign ad:
Churchill, TR, and John McCain all say the same thing: Never surrender. Strength and commitment. It’s the natural sequel to “3 AM”, and the McCain campaign would love nothing more than to gin up contributions on Hillary’s effort.

Isn’t Hillary used to 3am phone calls? “Hey Lady. You wanna come get your good for nothing husband out of my daughter’s bedroom before I whack him?”
pistolero on March 7, 2008 at 11:41 AM
I guess seeing Hillary in her curlers, robe, with the cream on her face, tapping the rolling pin and waiting up for Bill, turned the voters off.
Seriously, who would want this hyper-ambitious harpy answering the phone at 0300? The very first thing this shrew would think about is how the incident in question helped or hurt her political agenda and how she could use it to harm her political enemies.
There is nothing to this woman beyond calculation.

Very effective (I’m kinda tingly all over).

well…all I know is that John’s ad almost put me to sleep with that Knight Rider-esque music…only thing Mccain can say is he’s strong on defense, but that won’t do anything with the Obama-faithful.
charlie36r on March 7, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Powerful ad. Just awesome.
How any normal male could watch that Obama video of his defense plans and his bleating about making America proud again and then watch this ad and not vote for McCain is beyond me.
IreneFingIrene on March 7, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Mccain’s “get the independents and democrats to the polls for me” mentality will certainly not get him anywhere…the people that would vote for him are not going to come from the left for him in droves.

Don’t bet on it. Hillary people and a lot of Obama people, have said they would vote for McCain if their rival wins the nomination. I think this sentiment will grow between now & Nov because of all of the mutual mudslinging that will go on between now and then.
kcd on March 7, 2008 at 11:50 AM
That kinda made me forget that I don’t like McCain.
BeachBaby on March 7, 2008 at 11:51 AM
A fairly effective ad, but problematic on one point if he actually believes it:
We’ll never surrender! They will!
Nothing I’ve seen would convince me that the worldwide jihad has any intention on giving up on its desire for a universal caliphate. Not in any timeline I can realistically forsee. Individual battles, yes - but hardly the overall “struggle”, particularly against the Great Satan.

Great ad. For any of McCain’s faults, I keep remembering his decision to remain in the POW camp rather than accept an early release ahead of his fellows. He believes in something greater than himself. The others, I think, have yet to prove that.

Part of Hillary’s problem is that folks remember Governor Blanco’s weepy first response to crisis in Katrina, and this coupled with Hillary’s campaign tears conjures up the image of a less than strong, firm immediate reaction when necessary.

Mark McKinnon was Mav’s ad guy for the primary, but vowed that he wouldn’t work for McCain if he went against Obama. Said he would sit it out. I wonder if this is his work, because it’s good. Maybe he reconsidered. Most of you may remember his work while being Bush’s ad guy with the John Kerry windsurfing ad.

What’s it about the 3 a.m. phone call???
John McCain can never get up at 3 a.m.
The guy is mentally impotent.
The only time he might wake up in the middle of the night is when somebody will say: BOO. Even then, he’ll turn on the other side of the bed and ask his wife: “Where am I?”
As for Hillary, I think she’ll be up all night anyway, keeping an eye on her husband.
Hussein Barack will be up also at that time preparing for prayer. As a devout Muslim he must fulfill one of the tenets of Islam which is praying five times a day.
Indy Conservative on March 7, 2008 at 12:19 PM
I’d counsel the same “don’t bet on it” to you. How many here were adamant about not voting for John McCain in the beginning but have now resigned themselves to the task? I’m one.
Of course, this is premised on Democrat voters being rational about the whole thing. (Well if that were the case, they’d be voting for McCain anyway… slippery slope)
amkun on March 7, 2008 at 12:20 PM
You know his last name is Obama, right? The childish smears are less effective if you can’t at least get the rest of his name right.
amkun on March 7, 2008 at 12:22 PM
The allusion to the ‘daisy ad’ was very effective, I thought. I liked it.
shibumiglass on March 7, 2008 at 12:25 PM
It’s still very very early, and should Hillary come back and win the nomination, she’s not going to let the 3 a.m. phone call be her campaign’s main talking point in an election versus McCain, and the media — even those currently backing Obama — will not let that be the focal points of the fall election. Given the option between letting Mrs. Clinton or McCain to dictate the terms of the election, the big media outlets will go with Hillary at least nine times out of 10, and the only way you’ll ever see that ad again is if the McCain campaign tapes it and pays to run it themselves with a new end tag line.
On the other hand, given all the stories about Hillary’s temper with Bill in the White House, it would be great to see a campaign commercial showing Osama cowering in some cave on the Afghan-Pakistan border with Hillary throwing lamps and ashtray at him.
“You want her in that cave! You need her in that cave!
jon1979 on March 7, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Fantastic ad. Probably wont ever see it on tv though - it’s kinda long (expensive) and the news folks wont make it a story and thereby play it for free.

Oustanding ad. Whether or not you like McCain, you have to see the effectiveness of such an ad. Most Americans are proud of America, and don’t want to be lectured by Michelle Obama or anyone else on why they should not be.
Additionaly, I wish Teddy Roosevelt was Director of Homeland Security

Bingo! How many times do you think they have done something to “cut their nose off, to spite their face?” The hate between these rivals will be much greater than their desire to keep McCain out. Besides, McCain is as close as you can get to a Dimocrat without actually being a Dimocrat.

If this is correct(which it probably isn’t) it’s saying 42% support Juan McLame and 25% support the Hildebeast and 25% support Hussein Obama….correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t that add up to 50% vs 42%?
Then again, it is somewhat likely that if the hildebeast wins the nomination many of Hussein’s supporters will not show up at the polls right?

Letting voicemail take it. Caller ID said it’s someone she doesn’t want to talk to.
CK MacLeod on March 7, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Let’s see if I understand this correctly. A recent Rasmussen poll says 50% of all voters would rather see either Clinton or Obama answer the phone, while 42% prefer McCain. Among independents, 45% prefer Clinton or Obama, while only 39% prefer McCain.
All this is supposed to be good news for McCain because … um … why, exactly?
Xrlq on March 7, 2008 at 1:12 PM
I think Blanco could have gotten away with the teary initial response- after all there were some really heartbreaking scenes. It was the utter ineptitude and inaction in the DAYS that followed that killed her political career. Picking out the right jacket to wear for the Oprah visit instead of picking up the phone and coordinating relief efforts with the Feds.
That being said, both Obama and Clinton appear to be just like Bill Clinton- slow to react to events without sending everything through the U freakin N or to see how the poll numbers stack up. For his many faults and his ultimate failure as the GOP nominee, Triceratops is more likely to act in a crisis.

5 stars. Simply excellent. Refined yet powerful images (”Daisy” echo at the end is brilliant…yet only for those old enough to have seen it). The music is fine by me for its purpose.
1 suggestion: 2 minutes is too long; develop 30- and 60-second versions for initial presentation, to be followed by 10- to 15-second “reminder” versions.

i love the ad. But I suspect the kossacks will reply with drivel about fearmongering, hatemongering and warmongering. And now that the teachers’ union has had its way with them, few of the under thirties will have a clue as to who those people in the ad are. Might do a little to rally the base.

What’s really sad about modern times is that a man like Churchill could never get elected to anything. Could a man who sounds like that when he speaks be elected Prime Minister in Britain today? They were given three choices. McCain scored best of the three. The election will be, for practical purposes, a vote for one of two choices. These data show that, for now at least, McCain is preferable by most to either of the likely opponents.
mikeyboss on March 7, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Quite an effective ad. Thumbs up.
Now what the McCain campaign needs to do is to create an equally effective message about the economy that will resonate with voters. The thrust of the ad has to emphasize the freedoms of our personal economic choices by keeping the government’s hand out of our pcokets. The narrative has to focus on growth and opportunity and a future for Joe Sixpack.
Since the reference to Obama’s middle name is verboten as demanded by the PC crowd, I say that we use MeCain’s middle name Sidney, as well, thus over-riding the PC police. Because McCain is said to have a nasty temper, we could affectionately call him “Sid Vicious”. (Would the sex-pistolness of this nickname resonate with any particular age group? Would it give the Mav a racy quality that sells on the tube?)

Neato. Too bad the November election won’t be set up that way.
Of course he did, he was the only friggin’ Republican left in the race! All that proves is what we already knew, namely that the Republican primary is over but the Democrat one is not. Eventually, that will change, with either Clinton or Obama coming out on top. At that point, half the Democrats will have to settle for their second choice, which in most cases will be either Clinton or Obama, not McCain. So the fact that McCain ekes out a plurality in a hypothetical three-way race against two Democrats means nothing. All that matters is whether or not he can gain a majority, and in this case he didn’t come close.
The data shows no such thing, as it doesn’t ask voters who their second choice is. Assuming most [Obama / Clinton] supporters would prefer [Clinton / Obama] to McCain, the data shows McCain in trouble.
Xrlq on March 7, 2008 at 5:59 PM
eeyore: I think you misunderstood: “WE” means the GOP, “THEY” means the Democrats. The jihadists are not a party to this conversation: that’s the whole point.

He clearly states, “We’re Americans; we’ll never surrender, they will!” The they is almost certainly ‘jihadists’ in this sense.
And to eeyore - It doesn’t matter whether or not they’re intent on giving it up any time soon. There are only two outcomes to the Long War:
1) We surrender
2) They surrender
I believe that’s what McCain is saying here. Either by force of our diplomacy, force of out culture, of our democracy, or good old-fashioned force of arms, the jihadists must be defeated. They’re not simply going to go away. We have to force them to surrender, and the first step to that is refusing to surrender ourselves.
apollyonbob on March 7, 2008 at 11:30 PM
The ad was OK, I don’t think it comes close to outstanding. One problem with the ad is the reference to Churchill & Roosevelt. For starters, considering today’s schools and colleges, how can we assume younger generations would even recognize Churchill or Roosevelt? If you’ve ever seen Jay Leno’s “Jaywalking” talking to the man/girl on the street you’ll understand why I say this.
I know McCain is a fan of Teddy’s, but I just don’t see broad appeal in the ad. The portion of the ad pertaining to McCain as a POW is VERY powerful; I’d go with the latter part of the ad.

I admire much about Teddy Roosevelt too, but don’t forget: In addition to being a Republican and kind of a ‘maverick’ too;
He:
Was an early adopter, if not one of the founders of “The Progressive Movement in the US.
Was anti-Big Business.
Was the first President to push for ‘Universal Health Care’.
When he decided that the Republican Party was too conservative for him, he started his own ‘Bull Moose’ party, which split off all the RINOS in the Republican Party; leading to the election of Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, the Presidency during another critical time in history when the free world was menaced by a totalitarian regime.
Kind of the opposite of what is happening now with McCain and his ilk forcing conservatives out of the Republican Party.
