Thanks for revealing your geeky past, Michelle. I never admitted it at the time but I played D&D in high school with my brothers and their friends. I rarely encountered other women (I was also the only girl I knew of that had read LOTR). We played with pencil and graph paper and used a Xeroxed character/monster guide with duct tape binding that my older brother brought back from California in 1974/75. (Wish I still had my hands on that.) Those games were a lot of fun. It is frustrating now to have to explain to people whose only frame of reference is that anti-D&D movie from the 80s what innocent fun it really was.

Oh sheesh, I had so many fun times playing DD. Everquest was my latest attempt to recapture that…computer based MMO. But nothing will ever replace pen and pencil…candles on the table…all the dice…the dungeon screens…rolling for loot after an encounter.

… sigh … such good fun.

AND!!! My friends and I who played where the “popular crowd” in High School. After games (football, basketball) we’d go to one of our houses to play…and most of us were the stars of the team. Heh.

Sadly (or should I say thankfully) my geekiness (geekdom?) begins and ends with Mystery Science Theater 3000. Of course in that respect I’m a geek to the geeks because I’m more of a Mike guy than a Joel guy (which earns instant ostracization in the geek world, from what I understand).

Wow…this insight into nerdy aspects of the HA community is kinda…weird.

Jerry Falwell might’ve even been in on that bit of rank stupidity. That was actually one of the first times in my young life that I became consciously aware that some people will believe anything, no matter how ridiculous, moronic, or ill-informed, as long as it comes out of the mouth of a religious authority figure. (But enough about the Huckabites.) So that was a valuable life lesson to learn, and it’s served me well. My actual response of outright laughter didn’t go over so well, but it was the answer it deserved.

I think there’s a big difference (besides the obvious) between men geeks and women geeks, a sort of geek-gender bias if you will. Women geeks can get a date regardless if they’re geeks, being a man geek on the other hand tends to kill the dating prospects.

If it werern’t for this geek-gender bias I’d come out of the geek closet, but since I’ve become accustomed to getting dates I keep that closet door shut tight…

While visiting Hot Air I came across this.
I have never been a real fan of Dungeons and Dragons, but I think my sister-in-law was. This is one of the funniest videos I’ve seen.
