Allah’s at the dentist today and I can’t even begin to try and fill his shoes, but someone’s gotta fill the Hot Air levity quota! In honor of the passing of D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, I give you the Reno 911 D&D emergency call:

Blowback

Big Daddy Cool on March 7, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Time to break out the old “Tomb of Horrors” module, I think.

Thanks for posting this. Sure has helped to make my day.

Engrpat on March 7, 2008 at 12:37 PM

hahaha. i love that show.

there is another clip where the black female cop comes upon this same guy, and he’s explaining something, she’s not having it, and he says “see, this is why we don’t roll up nubians”.

he is then immediately maced.

classic.

its vintage duh on March 7, 2008 at 12:38 PM

I loved the one where the blond lady officer tried to handcuff the magician and he kept getting out of them.

BowHuntingTexas on March 7, 2008 at 12:41 PM

heh…”I’m wearing boots of escaping

*bang!*

AP’s at the dentist again? eh, my poor dentist got busted…for “incisor trading”…

JetBoy on March 7, 2008 at 12:43 PM

LOL. I wouldn’t have thought Michelle would be savvy to D&D humor.

frankj on March 7, 2008 at 12:44 PM

I had a college roommate who was into D&D. Thankfully, none of his (imaginary) dragons ate or burned my homework.

Bigfoot on March 7, 2008 at 12:44 PM

I came out of the geek closet ages ago, Frank!

I think ace forced her to admit her secret D&D loving past.

Michelle, if you’d give him an IPhone, he could be at the dentist and still post!

BacaDog on March 7, 2008 at 12:47 PM

So Michelle is a D&D geek?
Exit question: Hot or SuperHot?

BohicaTwentyTwo on March 7, 2008 at 12:47 PM

What else are you keeping close to the vest, Michelle? World of Warcraft playing? Back to back to back “Lord of the Rings” trilogy watching? Cardboard lightsaber wars? How the mighty have fallen…

Pasalubong on March 7, 2008 at 12:48 PM

One of the best Reno 911 clips ever:

“I’m wearing boots of escaping!” ::bang::

Still not as good as Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!, though.

Frank: Michelle’s cover was blown long ago on Hoist the Black Flag when Ace was able to browbeat her into admitting she had played.

Physics Geek on March 7, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Freaking hilarious.

I’ve had my inner geek showing for a long time. Did I mention that I watched the director’s cuts of all three LoTR movies in that marathon?

Ed Morrissey on March 7, 2008 at 1:02 PM

I found out about Michelle and D&D earlier in the week. Just when you think you can’t possibly like the woman more, there you go…..

FAIL! They are not director’s cuts. They are Extended Editions.

Or, to really get your geek on: FOTR:EE, TTT:EE, and ROTK:EE.

Dang. Now I gotta go do something more alpha and less beta. Good thing I’ve got drill this weekend.

AP is away from his computer for more than an hour, Michelle is posting humorous video… did I wake up in an alternate universe or something? ;)

Never got into D&D… but don’t ask about my three lvl 70’s on WoW.

Hollowpoint on March 7, 2008 at 1:33 PM

Strength, intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution and charisma.

What are the chances of rolling 18 three out of six times and never rolling below 15 in any of the six rolls. Yet everyone seemed to have characters with those attributes armed with a vorpal blade. When I was DM, those characters were doomed. The game was at its best when the level one or level two characters with maybe one good characteristic were scrambling around trying to find copper pieces to afford leather armor.

tommylotto on March 7, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Very good choice for levity, thanks Michelle.

Even tho I love Reno 911 and this clip was one of their best i can’t help but get nauseated when I think about a married couple with a (neglected) child who spends lots of time in the medieval state of mind as members of some group that goes down to Petrero, Ca. and acts out wars, etc. Sad but true.

Christine on March 7, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Don’t mess with a cop with a 17 Dex, a 4 Int and a +3 handgun.

BelchSpeak on March 7, 2008 at 1:49 PM

LOL I love reno 911 so politically incorrect.

Michelle since Bryan is no longer with hotair I thought I’d fill the battlestar galactica void.

Check out the picture on this link some religious folks will be offended I’m sure but as a fan of the show myself I find it rather humorous.

We are all such geeks!

Hey, will AP be posting while he’s still high on novacaine? Will we be able to tell?

TX Mom on March 7, 2008 at 1:57 PM

Looks like a wipe. Maybe this will teach them to put together a more balance group for their next adventure.

Lawrence on March 7, 2008 at 2:02 PM

Heh. Somewhere around here there’s not only a set of first edition AD&D hardbacks, but also the old Basic D&D boxed set. (The blue book and The Keep on the Borderlands, baby! Good god, that system was crude.) But yeah, I can geek pretty hard on that stuff and old comics from that time period. It’s a wonder I ever got laid. :P

ReubenJCogburn on March 7, 2008 at 2:08 PM

“Boots of escaping”!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

D&D???? Never heard of it and I have a 1d20 chance of making you all believe that.

Beware the chaotic evil half-elf!

Wow…this insight into nerdy aspects of the HA community is kinda…weird.

I’m starting to see why every pretty girl picture is met with the “HOT” comments.

tlynch001 on March 7, 2008 at 2:25 PM

“I got about 10 points of ‘I-wanna-beat-you-with-a-stick’ left”

Hilarious!

Wow, things have changed since the original series. Starbuck and Boomer are female, Tighe (sp?) is white, and some Cylons look like humans. And humans from planets that are zillions of lightyears from earth are white, black or yellow just like earthlings. (Actually, that’s true of just about every sci-fi series.)

Bigfoot on March 7, 2008 at 2:34 PM

My GOD do I fit in here. I am ashamed to admit that I threw out all of my original D&D/AD&D books to appease my (now ex-) wife. I should’ve thrown her out first!

I rate Michelle at “+5 Holy (or at lease Patriotic) Avenger”

q2600 on March 7, 2008 at 2:40 PM

It makes my Inner Geek smile. :)

Time to break out the old “Tomb of Horrors” module, I think.

irishspy on March 7, 2008 at 12:27 PM

I never made it through that one!

My favorite module was the low level Village of Homlet…then the larger epic Temple of Elemental Evil that began with Homlet.

Ya I know, I r t3h ge3k.

But for me DD stopped at V2.0 of the rules (if I recall). The Dragonlance takeover and any other DD world other than Greyhawk simply never appealed to me.

I guess it’s akin to the raging war between Captain Kirk Star Trek and Captain Picard Star Trek (let’s face it, Deep Space Nine and Voyaguer…eh…)

Long live DD!

And yes, DD has it’s benefits. I learned the words Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution and Charisma while still in 1st grade!

Yeah, I had to Google it too.

Awesome clip. I have a few old high-school friends that need to see this.

jaime on March 7, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Hilarious. Long live a generation of entertainment that involved imagination and a ready supply of coffee. I still think that the chasing people around with cardboard swords thing is a little over the top, but to each their own. Tell me again, why was D&D dumb?

blankminde on March 7, 2008 at 3:05 PM

Finally, after decades of searching, we now know the mightiest spell of all:

I’ve got about 10 points of “I want to beat you with a stick” left. I’ve got about 10 points of that.

Once spoken, it should be heeded, and all further commands obeyed without question, as (per the mystic viewer above) it summons up the next the next weapon to be employed, which cannot be dodged, defeats all armor, and has multiple shots.

Too bad the movie wasn’t nearly as funny as the show, especially with the extra “naughty” bits added in. Actually, the parts of the movie where it was like the show were funny - the movie movie was stupid and boring.

Neo on March 7, 2008 at 3:54 PM

I do have a 20-sided die tho; rolled a 16. Not sure what that means. I play Runescape and Kingdom of Loathing, not that offline D&D stuff.

I think there’s a big difference (besides the obvious) between men geeks and women geeks, a sort of geek-gender bias if you will. Women geeks can get a date regardless if they’re geeks, being a man geek on the other hand tends to kill the dating prospects.

If it werern’t for this geek-gender bias I’d come out of the geek closet, but since I’ve become accustomed to getting dates I keep that closet door shut tight…

Liberty or Death on March 7, 2008 at 5:25 PM

I wish I’d thought of this sooner, but thinking about this stuff reminded me of it: Did anybody else get told they were worshipping Satan by playing D&D? (When we were not, in fact, worshipping anything in any way, except possibly Mountain Dew, candy bars, and Doritos.)

Jerry Falwell might’ve even been in on that bit of rank stupidity. That was actually one of the first times in my young life that I became consciously aware that some people will believe anything, no matter how ridiculous, moronic, or ill-informed, as long as it comes out of the mouth of a religious authority figure. (But enough about the Huckabites.) So that was a valuable life lesson to learn, and it’s served me well. My actual response of outright laughter didn’t go over so well, but it was the answer it deserved.

Sadly (or should I say thankfully) my geekiness (geekdom?) begins and ends with Mystery Science Theater 3000. Of course in that respect I’m a geek to the geeks because I’m more of a Mike guy than a Joel guy (which earns instant ostracization in the geek world, from what I understand).

That was hilarious!

Thanks for revealing your geeky past, Michelle. I never admitted it at the time but I played D&D in high school with my brothers and their friends. I rarely encountered other women (I was also the only girl I knew of that had read LOTR). We played with pencil and graph paper and used a Xeroxed character/monster guide with duct tape binding that my older brother brought back from California in 1974/75. (Wish I still had my hands on that.) Those games were a lot of fun. It is frustrating now to have to explain to people whose only frame of reference is that anti-D&D movie from the 80s what innocent fun it really was.
