Bombing update: Ties to anarchists?

Authorities investigating the bombing of a military recruiting center in Times Square have turned their attention to a strange incident at the Canadian border last month. Four men fled a checkpoint when crossing, and the Canadians arrested two of them. During questioning, pictures of the center and other apparent targets were found in their backpacks, suggesting a plot in the works:
Nearly a full day after the explosion in Times Square, law enforcement officials said they had no suspects. WNBC.com has learned NYPD, Homeland Security and FBI officials are now revisiting an incident that occurred along the Canadian border last month, concerned there might be a possible connection to the Times Square explosion.
Four men trying to cross the border attempted to flee the checkpoint as Canadian officials tried to question them, investigators said.
Two of the men got away, officials said. The men left behind a backpack with photos of various New York City locations including Times Square, according to sources speaking on condition of anonymity. One of the photos included the military recruitment center, officials said. As a precaution, NYPD outreach officers last month went to various New York City businesses, including the Times Square military recruitment center, to investigate if there had been any specific threats. No threat information was known at the time, a law enforcement source said. …
One law enforcement official described two of the men are believed to be “anarchist-types.” He stressed as of now there is nothing to link the men to Thursday’s explosion. But it is a prudent to follow this possible lead, he said.
The investigators have played down two other theories over the last few hours. This bombing had certain similarities to recent attacks on the Mexican and British consulates, but also significant differences. Those two bombings used identical explosive devices based on black powder in dummy grenades, while yesterday’s attack used a different type of IED without grenades.
Also, the FBI announced that it has questioned a “person of interest” in the letters sent to several Congressmen that included a picture of the recruiting center. They have also begun backing away from a connection between that and the bombing for a couple of reasons, mainly that the manifesto had the name and/or signature of the person who wrote it.
More developments will certainly be forthcoming today. Keep checking back to this post for updates. Meanwhile, for those who downplay violence and intimidation against recruiters, Michelle has a nice, long timeline of the escalation. I’m not naming names … cough cough ….

Why do these nutjobs always have to target us? Do these folks think that America is a military controlled-junta or something. We don’t set policy. This attack seems to have stepped it up a notch from your typical Che kids acting out their teenage rebellion fantasy by throwing paint at the mean military man. I don’t like this disturbing trend. Fortunately I own numerous firearms, and I’m currently safe from these people…in Iraq.

Everyone carries around pictures of recruitment offices, especially images of the famous Times Square recruitment office.

The reason they believe the bombers are anarchist types is because of the possible connection with the bombing of the Mexican consulates which appears to be related to supporters of Brad Will who was an anarchist/independent journalist killed a year to the day of the bombing covering a teachers strike in Oaxaca.

Clue alert:
black powder device delivered via BMXican,
20 page “here I am come find me” rant,
1 “make me famous” picture,
not so sleuthy uber-lib canuck kids.
Hmmmmmm, probably going out on a limb, but I bet we’ll see a few dopey anarchists / wanna-be terrorists in custody who look very much like this.

Because the bomb dropper used a bicycle as a means of fast getaway in the NYC recruitment station blast, I recalled some other stories re Critical Mass. These bicycle anarchists have planned to tie up congested streets in St.Paul/Minneapolis during the Republican convention.
While the group tends to use (pardon the oxymoron) aggressive passive resistance in their protests, they do threaten public safety. Is it possible that Critical Mass members have some lone-wolf imitators who have taken anarchy a step beyond?
Describing such events in Portland, Oregon, an Internet commenter observed: “The City refuses to enforce any traffic laws againt Critical Mass, a group of bicycle-mounted anarchists who monthly terrorize a selected part of downtown, piling their bikes in a heap in the middle of an intersection to shut it down, and occasionally using a “rolling demonstration” to try to paralyze the entire downtown district.”

I vote for all three along with criminals, terrorists and thugs.
jimbo2008 on March 7, 2008 at 7:38 AM
My vote: local anarchists thinking they are cool. Unfortunatly for them, they will be caught and will be looking at years in prison and huge fines for their little escapade.

Thanks for the links, I wasn’t up to speed on the Mexican consulate connection.
I’m guessing a cowardly anarchist copy-cat in a Berkeley-inspired Code-Pink frame of mind.

On “Fox and Friend’s” this morning Mancow Mueller, a radio DJ from my hometown of Chicago, said that the actions of the bomber reflect a movie that starred Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis called “12 Monkey’s”.
He said “watch that movie, and you’ll see what I mean”.
Personally, I’ve never seen it.
Has anyone seen 12 Monkey’s?
Is Mueller on to something here?

What the hell is going on here? You got some kid in L.A. sending pictures of himself in front of the recruiting station to members of Congress. And you have people running away from police at the Canadian border with pictures of the recruiting station in their backpacks. Why is this particular recruiting station so popular all of a sudden?

I’ll give 4 to 1 odds they’re registered Democrats.

I still think it is just some angry white male

These anarchists deserve death meted out by the government. If the government doesn’t have the stones to d it, I do.
SouthernGent on March 7, 2008 at 8:20 AM
I saw these idiot clown “anarchists” march in the ANSWER rallies in DC.
They’re all pasty white, scrawny, rich boy college kids buying meth with daddy’s credit card.
When they find the perps, he’ll squeal like a little piggy on all of his fellow twerps. They should be all rounded up and given the maximum sentence in Rikers.
No country club for these punks. Let them do hard time with the Crips and the Bloods and we’ll see just how revolutionary they feel when they get out, or if they’ll even be able to walk at that point.
NoDonkey on March 7, 2008 at 8:32 AM
Now they are saying the letters to the Congress people and the Times Square bombing are just a coincidence? Strange.
wytammic on March 7, 2008 at 9:29 AM
Yeah Boom, I’ve seen it, and I had the same thought, but the connection is actually pretty weak. The idiot kids in the movie claimed responsibility for letting the animals out of the zoo, declaring “We did it!” What made it significant in the film was that it coincided with the beginning of a biological armageddon, and subsequent efforts to find the start/cause of the plague were largely derailed by focusing on the animal anarchists lunatic statements, which had nothing to do with the plague. (Mostly)
But yeah, it clicked right away that it appears that these idiots were imitating Brad Pitt in the movie, who spent most of his time there in an insane asylum… You just can’t make this stuff up.
Maquis on March 7, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Go to any anti-war rally, and you’ll find anarchists…along with other far-left extremists.
Richard Romano on March 7, 2008 at 9:49 AM
sounds like anarchists to me…bunch of freaks.
someguy on March 7, 2008 at 9:55 AM
I wish they wouldn’t call themselves “anarchists”, it’s as insulting as democrats calling themselves “liberals”.
LimeyGeek on March 7, 2008 at 10:08 AM
I was really hoping to see some trustifarians being dragged from an Obama campaign office and charged with these bombings. Is that too much to ask?

I saw a schoolbook the other day that defined “decimate” as “to destroy a large portion of.”
Let’s face it, words don’t mean anything anymore. I also have a hard time coming to grips with the fact that rock-throwing nihilist/communists have taken over the word “anarchist,” but then “gay” used to mean “happy” and “make love” used to mean “courtship.”
“Anarchist” apparently now means its polar opposite, “communist.”
For the two people left who care what words mean, a political anarchist believes in absolute personal responsibility – obviously these pasty retards don’t believe in that.
But I guess it’s over now, what with “Libertarian” having morphed into “creepy conspiracy theorist” and “progressive” meaning “wanting to stop progress and make people live in tents and grow their own food.”
Merovign on March 7, 2008 at 4:07 PM
Ha! That’s a new one for me! I like it :)
LimeyGeek on March 7, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Ah yes. “Progressive”. The use of that word nowadays brings me out in hives. I imagine anything can seem ‘progressive’ if you are utterly clueless as to which direction you are facing when you take a step forward.
I’ll drink a consoling glass of something good tonight in the spirit of solidarity with you ;)
English. It was a fine language in its day.
