That explosion was larger than an urban breaching charge, and I’ve seen guys catch frag from those several meters away when people aren’t careful. I don’t buy the media’s constant, babbling insistence that this was a minor “nuisance” explosion that couldn’t have hurt anyone anyway.
NPR’s coverage was especially infuriating this morning. Basically a “What’s the big fuss? Everybody’s fine; move along and forget this minor thing happened” tone to it.

That’s what I was thinking. You can buy it in many hobby shops, whereas something with more kick, like ANFO, takes at least a little competence to make.

Also this is a little off topic, but really, there shouldn’t be a recruiting station in times square, that is prime real estate and our government shouldn’t be stealing the property.

It’s on a traffic island with subway tunnels directly under it. They could probably put a Starbucks (as if there aren’t enough of those) there, but that’s about it.

Looks like a lone nut. Where are his lookouts and scouts? Don’t see any. If this were a group, I would expect somebody on foot to casually pass by and give the green light by walkie talkie. It would be interesting to look at the video for the weeks leading up to this to see who’s poking around Times Square in the wee hours. At some point, the perpetrator had to inspect the bomb site closely to make his decision where to plant it.

It was good that no one was hurt. It seems that the explosion happened after the traffic passed which was good because it could have caused a car crash.

If one could make out the image on the side of that semi truck, one could interview it’s driver – as I am sure there is a log held by the trucking company of which the image on the side of the truck would belong too.

The truck seems to have been driving in the right direction in order to view the individual in question.

Imagine the shoe were on the other foot and instead of a recruitment center this was a Code Pink office.

The media would be opining ad nauseum that while this may be the work of a lone nut, partial responsibility rests with talk radio and the conservative/right wing which created an environment of hate that promoted this sort of activity.

Waste of a perfectly good 19th Century Greenwich Village townhouse 38 years ago, though as a child walking through the neighborhood, it was a pretty cool public attraction for a few years, until the space was finally replaced by a new building.

As for today’s bomber, there are just too many cameras everywhere in Times Square for the police not to have multiple angle surveillance videos of the attack, in the same way all the cameras around London caught the July 7 bombers in the act three years ago.

Spc Steve: Too early to tell what the public “take” is.

To me it looks like action against a military target by a non-uniformed combatant.

Under the Hague Convention, non-uniformed combatants can be put up against a wall and simply shot … an optimum solution, as far as I am concerned.
