Surveillance video: The Times Square bombing

Haven’t seen this online yet, and since interest in the story is intense I thought I’d hook you up. Here’s our culprit caught in the act; lots of smoke, although the only relevant detail appears to be the fact that the color is white, which suggests a low-grade explosive according to Fox’s correspondent. The cops think they’ve found the suspect’s bike, which might crack not only this case but two other mysterious bombings at consulates in the city over the past three years that followed an M.O. similar to this one.

My distaste for “lone nut embodies entire political movement” stories was growing even before Olby blamed MM for that wackjob sending him a letter filled with fake anthrax last year, but that was the proverbial cherry on top. If you want to read any Larger Truths into this, you’re welcome to it.

Yup, Olbermann, possibly. But, wouldn’t the failed, ESPN jocksniffer, hide his face with a jockstrap?

OhEssYouCowboys on March 6, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Lone nut in a party full of nuts

Kini on March 6, 2008 at 2:40 PM

There are lots of violent nuts. But it would upset my worldview to associate violence with the anti-war leftist types, since I spend most of my breath suggesting that they are all cowardly little fems who live in grandma’s basement and comment at HuffPo.

Jaibones on March 6, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Puts to rest the ‘he was careful not to hurt anyone’ crap….looks like traffic, in the wrong place at the wrong time and injuries, or worse, would be the result.

Limerick on March 6, 2008 at 2:41 PM

You don’t need a conspiracy, just put the idea out there and someone somewhere will say, “That’d be kool, man.”

OhEssYouCowboys on March 6, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Heh. Olbermann’s afraid of matches; how would he set off a bomb?

Jaibones on March 6, 2008 at 2:42 PM

The woman eco-terrorist, Briana Waters, was convicted on some of the counts. She’s only looking at 5-20 years which is much less than she could have been convicted on. I think she testified that she wasn’t there and that is not going to help her at sentencing.

Blake on March 6, 2008 at 2:43 PM

quite a few cars, cabs and trucks went by while he was there and saw him, hope the FBI is getting good info and this guy will be taken off the street before he hurts someone.

trailortrash on March 6, 2008 at 2:44 PM

ABC News was saying that this attack was similar to attacks on embassies in the area. That there might be a connection.

Hasnt NYC had several loner attacks on various embassies and other international locations lately ? I seem to remember some grenade attack not too long ago ?

Unibomber wanta be? Code Pinko?

Zorro on March 6, 2008 at 2:52 PM

To use lefty lingo: The nutroots have created a climate of hatred for Marine Recruters that led to this bombing, and they need to be held responsible.

29Victor on March 6, 2008 at 2:55 PM

So I’m a little disconnected from American news (live in Europe, no TV), but is this being treated as a terrorist attack in the States? Times Square is, like much of New York, somewhat sacred in the minds of Americans (myself included), not unlike the WTC. So it stands to reason that this is something of a terrorist attack, on scope if not scale with 9/11, IMO.

Or is this being treated like an attack on a military target because it did damage to a military recruiter’s office, and didn’t kill anyone?

Jaibones on March 6, 2008 at 2:41 PM

They are only against violence when it comes to defending this country. The nuts on the left are ok with violence as long as it is against our troops, people who buy SUVs, people who wear fur, people who chop down trees to build big houses, anyone who does not believe in the myth that is global warming. (you get the point)

This kind of violence on from the left is only going to get worse, especially when we retain the WH this year. They will be really pissed off that we defeated their black candidate.

NYC BOMB MILITARY

Looking at 15-20 yrs easy.

TroubledMonkey on March 6, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Looks like he was standing right over it when it went off — didn’t even get a chance to walk back to his bike.

Hope he got hurt real good.

Today is the 38th anniversary of the Townhouse bombing by the Weatherman Group in 1970.

RobCon on March 6, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Yup. Three of our home grown hippy terrorists blew themselves up building a bomb destined to be detonated at a military dance. Couldn’t have happened to better bunch of scamps.

I imagine the smell of sliced/diced/burnt hippy to be quite pungent.

natesnake on March 6, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Spc Steve: Too early to tell what the public “take” is.

To me it looks like action against a military target by a non-uniformed combatant.

Under the Hague Convention, non-uniformed combatants can be put up against a wall and simply shot … an optimum solution, as far as I am concerned.

Kristopher on March 6, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohm have yet to comment on today’s incident.

Huh. Go figure. 38 years ago today, a few militant hippy nutjobs blew themselves up building a bomb for the soldiers at Fort Dix. Today a bomb goes off at a military recruiting center. Odd that should happen.

natesnake on March 6, 2008 at 3:26 PM

Waste of a perfectly good 19th Century Greenwich Village townhouse 38 years ago, though as a child walking through the neighborhood, it was a pretty cool public attraction for a few years, until the space was finally replaced by a new building.

As for today’s bomber, there are just too many cameras everywhere in Times Square for the police not to have multiple angle surveillance videos of the attack, in the same way all the cameras around London caught the July 7 bombers in the act three years ago.

jon1979 on March 6, 2008 at 3:31 PM

If this catches on as much as school shootings, and I’m sure it will, it might be worth lots more video cameras.

The Democratic Party is one of lone nuts.

Hening on March 6, 2008 at 3:41 PM

If this had happened in Berkeley, he’d instantly be appointed to the City Council.

OhEssYouCowboys on March 6, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Imagine the shoe were on the other foot and instead of a recruitment center this was a Code Pink office.

The media would be opining ad nauseum that while this may be the work of a lone nut, partial responsibility rests with talk radio and the conservative/right wing which created an environment of hate that promoted this sort of activity.

moxie_neanderthal on March 6, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Could be Bush and that guy from France, they ride bikes and like to blow things up. Was there a levee in the front of the building? Cuz, that would be more proof.

2Tru2Tru on March 6, 2008 at 3:58 PM

If one could make out the image on the side of that semi truck, one could interview it’s driver – as I am sure there is a log held by the trucking company of which the image on the side of the truck would belong too.

The truck seems to have been driving in the right direction in order to view the individual in question.

PresidenToor on March 6, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Forget the politics of this, think about the practical:

Every “Critcial Mass” clown rolling in the five boroughs just had a bull’s-eye painted on their hide in NYPD’s eyes.

Let the tasing begin!

TC@LeatherPenguin on March 6, 2008 at 4:50 PM

Looks like a black powder device. Not very powerful or sophisticated.

Alden Pyle on March 6, 2008 at 5:01 PM

This is no lone nut — it’s part of a systematic escalation on the part of anti-war nuts who will use violence (how they don’t see the irony is beyond me) to get their way.

Richard Romano on March 6, 2008 at 5:37 PM

Let the tasing beatings begin!

Mojack420 on March 6, 2008 at 5:44 PM

Put him in Gitmo. See how he does

Mike Mose on March 6, 2008 at 5:56 PM

It was good that no one was hurt. It seems that the explosion happened after the traffic passed which was good because it could have caused a car crash.

Also this is a little off topic, but really, there shouldn’t be a recruiting station in times square, that is prime real estate and our government shouldn’t be stealing the property.

LevStrauss on March 6, 2008 at 6:01 PM

Looks like a lone nut. Where are his lookouts and scouts? Don’t see any. If this were a group, I would expect somebody on foot to casually pass by and give the green light by walkie talkie. It would be interesting to look at the video for the weeks leading up to this to see who’s poking around Times Square in the wee hours. At some point, the perpetrator had to inspect the bomb site closely to make his decision where to plant it.

Tantor on March 6, 2008 at 6:04 PM

So can this be considered a hate crime? Suddenly I am not so sorry they give extra punishments for those.

Lily on March 6, 2008 at 6:46 PM

Lev, the government pays for it’s recruiting sites, it doesn’t steal them.

Maquis on March 6, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Not very good with it from what I saw. I could have done more damage with a brick.

Alden Pyle on March 6, 2008 at 5:01 PM

That’s what I was thinking. You can buy it in many hobby shops, whereas something with more kick, like ANFO, takes at least a little competence to make.

Also this is a little off topic, but really, there shouldn’t be a recruiting station in times square, that is prime real estate and our government shouldn’t be stealing the property.

LevStrauss on March 6, 2008 at 6:01 PM

It’s on a traffic island with subway tunnels directly under it. They could probably put a Starbucks (as if there aren’t enough of those) there, but that’s about it.

ticticboom on March 6, 2008 at 7:34 PM

This is the busiest recruiting station the military has.

Mojave Mark on March 6, 2008 at 10:55 PM

That explosion was larger than an urban breaching charge, and I’ve seen guys catch frag from those several meters away when people aren’t careful. I don’t buy the media’s constant, babbling insistence that this was a minor “nuisance” explosion that couldn’t have hurt anyone anyway.
NPR’s coverage was especially infuriating this morning. Basically a “What’s the big fuss? Everybody’s fine; move along and forget this minor thing happened” tone to it.
