Obama’s foreign policy advisor: He’s not ready for the 3 a.m. phone call

Duly qualified, of course, with the caveat that Hillary and Maverick (and thus, presumably, anyone lacking executive experience) aren’t ready either. Think that’ll stop the RNC from turning this into a honey of a soundbite for an attack ad this fall?

Think that’ll stop the RNC from turning this into a honey of a soundbite for an attack ad this fall?

Not if they’re smart! Of course, that said…

Cylor on March 6, 2008 at 12:54 PM

Well, her honesty is refreshing, at least.

Still not voting for Obama, though.

flipflop on March 6, 2008 at 12:55 PM

His advisers aren’t ready for prime time either.

TheBigOldDog on March 6, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Is she saying that Barack will use his “judgement” to do nothing (as he has in the past) when the 3am call comes?

EJDolbow on March 6, 2008 at 12:56 PM

You know, I’ll give this to Hillary—at least she probably answered the phone at 3 am while Bill was out with whomever—she did have to take the message, and give it to Bill so she DOES have that experience. The question is who do you trust to use that information correctly. The Democrats or the Republicans. I know my choice.

He’s not ready for the 3 a.m. phone call

“Oops, did I say that out loud?”

Geronimo on March 6, 2008 at 12:59 PM

I just find this so amusing.
Barack Obama is himself making judgment calls on things that happened before he even got to Washington. Where does he get off, saying that John McCain and Hillary Clinton made “the wrong answer when the phone rang” referring of course to the decision to go into Iraq. Who has judged that it was a wrong call? Last I looked, we’re doing quite well there in Iraq!
I know he’s catering to the moonbats when he makes these imbecillic statements, but to even presume that a judgment about whether Iraq was right or wrong is wrong in itself!!

Susan Rice: proof that life is stranger than fiction. “O.K. Susan have your assignment? ‘Yeah, make Barak look intelligent by me being SuperStupid. Cool”

Branch Rickey on March 6, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Um, I beg to differ that John McCain “hasn’t had the 3 am phone call either”. Honey, he has had it bigtime, but it was just in a different form…

“Attention: All pilots man your aircraft.”

drunyan8315 on March 6, 2008 at 1:00 PM

B. Hussein is a clueless moron.

dogsoldier on March 6, 2008 at 1:01 PM

She is right about judgment, i.e. who can employ it at 3am, since no-one has the actual experience. But do the Obama people really want to bring the question of judgment into the discussion since he appears to be a little light on that as well (see the recent articles about the Rezko land deal(s))?

HawaiiLwyr on March 6, 2008 at 1:01 PM

So what are her qualifications? Time for some Googling….

Ring, ring…

It’s 3am, and Barak hopes that isn’t Tehran calling for change.

‘Hello’………

Limerick on March 6, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Oy, vey.

Did she really just say that?

Look, I have no qualifications to be a Presidential adviser. But I’m pretty sure even I could figure out that it might be a bad idea to state unequivocally on national television: “my candidate is not ready to handle a foreign policy crisis.”

If Barack has a brain he’ll fire her within the next half hour.

Instead, you’re probably looking at the next National Security Adviser.

The world’s a dangerous place. There’s blood on the moon, kids. The planet has been too peaceful - relatively speaking - for too long. Bad times are coming in the next couple decades. History leaves no doubt.

We cannot afford a Barack Obama in the White House. It might literally be a mistake of unprecedented proportions.

I really can’t believe the Democrats are even serious about either of their candidates. Not at this point in history.

I seriously - no joke - miss John Kerry. Barack is that bad.

Professor Blather on March 6, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Clinton I can understand. But McCain? The man graduated the Naval Academy, served 23 years in the Armed Forces, has served in Congress for 26 years, and has served on the Senate Armed Services Committee and Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs. All by 4 years before Obama even took office.

amerpundit on March 6, 2008 at 1:03 PM

This is a non-issue. “Change” requires that all 3:00 a.m., phone calls not be directed to Obama, until 8:00 a.m. By Executive Order, there will be no emergencies until Michelle says so. 3:00 a.m., phone calls “are downright meant.”

In Obamaworld, things are going to change.

OhEssYouCowboys on March 6, 2008 at 1:03 PM

how easy for BO to say he wouldn’t have voted to go into Iraq. Given his record he probably wouldn’t have voted at all. We’ll never know though, so he is comparing apples and oranges when he says his judgement was better than McCains and Hilary’s.

ctmom on March 6, 2008 at 1:04 PM

Wow! I don’t know whether Obama could handle the 3:00 a.m. phone call, but, based on his decision to hire this woman to advise him and represent him on t.v., I’d say that his judgment is grossly inadequate.

morganfrost on March 6, 2008 at 1:04 PM

“just downright mean.”

OhEssYouCowboys on March 6, 2008 at 1:06 PM

No 3:00 am calls please: Sadly, we have already lost the GWOT and any chance to confront the true sponsor of anti American dogma, namely Iran. With a sizable portion of the American public mesmerized by Barrack Hussein Obama and his appeasement driven foreign policy, the indifference to open hostility directed against our military and the unquestioning acceptance of agenda driven ideology masquerading as news, the citizenry of this country demonstrate a subscription to beliefs which lack critical thought, objective analysis and any recognition of the sacrifice and discipline needed to ensure democracy and freedom survive. For many, life in America has become “The Audacity of Entitlement”, and “It takes Moral Relativity”. Both of these fictional works and the core principles championed by liberals require a willing suspension of beliefs. Beliefs that have shown the world is a far better place since the creation of the United States and the reality of enacted individual responsibility does indeed create a greater good for the many.

Thaaank you!

And like above…he wasn’t there so it’s easy to Mon morn QB

LtE126 on March 6, 2008 at 1:07 PM

She is right. None of the current crop of bozos running have had to pick up the phone at 3AM, not even at 3PM for that matter. Frankly, the media has taken this “phone at 3AM” thing and driven it so far into the ground the Chinese are raising a stink. Hang up the damn phone already and let’s move on to something with a little more meat on it!

pilamaye on March 6, 2008 at 1:08 PM

Think that’ll stop the RNC from turning this into a honey of a soundbite for an attack ad this fall?

No sensible politician could resist. Just goes to show how inexperienced Obama’s advisers are. Calling them clowns would be an insult to clowns.

Dusty on March 6, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Thanks so much…

Senator McCain is so the next President of the United States!

HotAirJosef on March 6, 2008 at 1:14 PM

This is yet another example why many of us think he would be easier to beat than Hillary or, if he wins, easier to oppose and less effective. The more we get to see him in action, his staff, and his supporters (the music video, art exhibit, etc), the less we need to worry about Obambi and his army of OThumpers.

oldvannes on March 6, 2008 at 1:14 PM

She made a terrible tactical mistake. While I disagree with it, I think her thesis was a good one (”judgment”), but her framing of the reply was a disaster… she could use some media training.

That’s bull.

Hussein Barack, as all devote Muslims, is well ready and fitted for the 3 a.m. prayer.

Indy Conservative on March 6, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Hussein Barack might not be ready for the 3 a.m. one, but his wife is always ready, if you know what I mean…wink wink.

Indy Conservative on March 6, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Something tells me if Obama got the “3 AM phone call,” he’d ask if could simply vote “present.”

Sugar Land on March 6, 2008 at 1:30 PM

I think we (including Rush) made a big mistake by pushing Hillary over Obama.

Here’s what seems likely to happen now.
1. MI and FL get to vote again.
2. Hillary wins the Dem nomination
3. Obama takes his millions, his black vote, and his white guilt vote and runs as an Independent.
4. Obama become President with 34% of the total vote.

faraway on March 6, 2008 at 1:33 PM

She has no idea how far over her head she has gotten herself. If Obama knew she was going to take that approach, the same applies to him as well.

Kini on March 6, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Michelle could have handled this question.

“Things are so bad in ‘merica, that the phone lines are down. Parents laid off from the mills are feeding them to their kids and using the poles for firewood.”

Besides, if anything like 9/11 happens again, we’ll just sue the perpetrators for everything they’ve got. And hold protest marches.

Problem solved.

NoDonkey on March 6, 2008 at 1:39 PM

She seems a bright woman. Honest at least.

jake-the-goose on March 6, 2008 at 1:40 PM

…so the Democrat candidates are both planning to ask Bush, Cheney, Rice, McCain, and (as a backup) Guliani for their home phone numbers just in case???

Oh please. How hard is it to pick a phone up and say “we surrender”.

The man’s more than ready.

Chuck Schick on March 6, 2008 at 2:08 PM

In light of that video clip, I’m trying to come up with a new Obama campaign slogan:

Barack Obama – Less ready for a crisis than Hillary

Barack Obama – Vote for hindsight

Barack Obama – Yes, we ca—well, actually, no we can’t

Barack Obama – If you wanted a woman President, this is the next best thing

Yes, Obama is going to take this country in a new direction . . . back to the 1970’s. (At least then Michelle Obama will really have something to whine about).

Obama is gonna get roasted when the real game begins folks just watch.

Unlike Obama, his advisor Susan Rice has experience.

Bush got the 3AM phone call. He kept reading My Pet Goat. Then he went into hiding.

Bush got the 3AM phone call. He kept reading My Pet Goat. Then he went into hiding.

B26354 on March 6, 2008 at 2:53 PM

And boy is that going to cost him this November!

Chuck Schick on March 6, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Like that other Obama advisor told the Canadians, “this is just campaign rhetoric, not to be taken seriously”.

Now, li’l chillun, down on your knees before Saint Barack and say, AAAAAAYYYYYYY-MEN!

Steve Z on March 6, 2008 at 3:11 PM

Cuffy Meigs brings up a good point. Susan Rice only has foreign policy experience only for African affairs, and was in charge of the crisis in Rwanda during the Clinton Administration. What did the Clinton Administration do for Rwanda? The million dead people there say nothing. So do those who are still alive.

Now if the phone rings at 3 AM and the enemies have nukes instead of machetes, do we want Susan Rice to answer it?

Steve Z on March 6, 2008 at 3:25 PM

First of all, Barrack Hussien Obama wasn`t even present on the IRAQ vote that 95% of all Democrats voted yes on for all the same reasons the Clinton administration, and all of the major allies had made the same intelligence decisions that the Bush administration made. What more do you need other than Hussein invaded two countries, tried to assasinate a sitting American President [Bush 1], and killed more than a million Kurds with chemical weapons. The mistakes were significant in how we handled early IRAQ, but that is not the case now, and History will determine the rest, not some rookie yuppie senator who won`t wear a flag pin, or put his hand over his heart in respect for our national anthem, not to mention his Weatherman relationship, and the anti american/anti semite Muslim Louis Farrakhan. Is this the kind of Commander-in-Chief you want in Washington?

HAGGS99 on March 6, 2008 at 3:29 PM

Of the three McCain is clearly the most qualified for a 3 AM phone call… he’s typically in bed by 6 PM.

regal on March 6, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Susan Rice was one of the Clinton “whiz kids.” She was made an Assistant Secretary of State at age 33. Totally in over her head. She is also from a very elite and well connected family in Washington, D.C. So much for change!

rockmom on March 6, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Dick Morris had a great idea for an Obama & Co. video reply: the red phone rings at 3am, a Hilary-looking woman answers it and says, “Bill, it’s for you.”

Tzetzes on March 6, 2008 at 5:22 PM

…Only question is, would he be next to her in bed?!

Tzetzes on March 6, 2008 at 5:23 PM

How can you right the make judgment if you aren’t ready to deal with crises at 3 am?

Riposte on March 6, 2008 at 6:26 PM

Wow, that should be *make the right judgment*.

Riposte on March 6, 2008 at 6:26 PM

Didn’t his follow-up commercial say he IS ready? Or did I , again, mishear Obama?

SouthernGent on March 6, 2008 at 6:49 PM

The only 3:00 am phone calls that he will have to worry about is Rezko calling for bail money. If he was president I am sure they would have a physical person go fetch you. Of course Bush wasn’t too great with his midday performance on 9/11. Sometimes I wonder if Andy Card whispered to Bush, “Cheney said ’sit your ass down and read the goat book.’ He has it covered. Then get in the jet and take the scenic route.”

LevStrauss on March 6, 2008 at 7:07 PM

This is the quality, experience level and efficacy of the advisers and the first lady Obama promises to bring to the Whitehouse.

Which really raises the the obvious, that McCain has the wisdom to hire the best available advisers and cabinet members regardless of any other characteristic other than the ability to do the best job.
Or at least do a lot better job than Hill, Bill or Obama.
