Breaking: Bombing at Big Apple military recruitment center Update: Serial bomber?

posted at 7:13 am on March 6, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Given the escalating protests over military recruitment, it seems inevitable that people would bomb those who seek to protect the nation and fight our enemies. This morning, unknown attackers bombed a Times Square military recruitment office. Thankfully, the office and the building that housed it was closed at the time of attack:

An explosive device damaged a military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, and police blocked off the area to investigate.

The explosive device caused minor damage, and no one was injured, police said. The explosion shattered a glass entryway. …

Witnesses staying at a hotel in the area said they heard a “big bang” and could feel the building shake. A large plume of smoke was also visible after the explosion, they said.

Melanie Morgan just wrote about the escalating attacks on military recruiters a week ago. She lists several cities where recruitment centers have been attacked in varying degrees, usually limited to vandalism and threats of violence. These operations have not hurt military recruiting at all. Michelle wrote about this two years ago (and many times since), and quite obviously the attackers have grown frustrated that they haven’t frightened off enough people to slow down the flow of recruits.

Now the movement has decided to morph into domestic terrorism. Of course, the people responsible will claim that they bombed the office during the night to keep anyone from being hurt. That’s exactly the same kind of rationalization that people like the Weather Underground and the SLA used at first, anyway — that terrorism was justified by their politics. In fact, a few like William Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn still claim that.

And what exactly are the politics behind this? The US does not have a draft any longer. The only people joining the military are those who volunteer to do so. The Code Pink protesters who throw paint, rocks, and the unknown terrorists who throw bombs want to disarm the nation while it’s under attack by radical jihadists, and at the same time want to stop young men and women from exercising their own choices. Since the Code Pink contingent and the nutcases who throw bombs can’t possibly win through the democratic process, they want to engage in intimidation — and now terrorism — to frighten people into acquiescence.

When this fails to achieve their goals, expect bombs to find human targets.

UPDATE: It didn’t take long for the inevitable conspiracy-theory mavens to appear on Daily Kos. Diarist “antirove” claims that this could just be a conservative plot to make the Left look bad:

It’s nothng [sic] new for the right to CAUSE or INCITE the violence, or to trigger arranged mob responses, and make sure it all gets pinned on the Left. And the right seems to be able to get the FBI and law enforcement to do this for them as well. Anarchy, chaos, property damage, physical harm, mayhem, murder, militarized police with massive crowd control equipment, are all ‘options’ the right are eager to use to shut down any potentially energizing movement.

I don’t think the Left needs much help in making themselves look like nutters, and “antirove” him/herself is Exhibit A.

UPDATE II: Bob Owens has some analysis from the photographs of the blast. He’s not sure whether this fits the profile of an anti-war activist attack.

UPDATE III: Police now say that the bomb was “roughly similar” to two other bombings in NYC, at the Mexican and British consulates. They have some clear video of the incident as well:

Officials said that in today’s attack, a man bundled in a gray hooded jacket or sweatshirt and wearing a backpack was seen riding a bicycle around the recruiting station and acting suspiciously moments before the explosion. Video footage from a surveillance camera showed a bicyclist dismounting, approaching the recruitment center, then returning to the bike and riding away before the explosion occurs.

Interesting. It fits closer to Bob Owen’s analysis. And I’ll say this much — if so, then my original post jumped to conclusions. The anti-war protesters have turned to intimidation and vandalism, and if unchecked will proceed to violence. However, this may not have had anything to do with the anti-war movement, and I should have been a little more circumspect about that this morning.

I teased about showing up in a pink outfit and protesting..He got the joke, and added his two cents about the situation, but then he mentioned that all of their recruiting stations are on high alert…

Pam on March 6, 2008 at 9:30 AM

No it is not just the “Right” they want to blame this on. Who do they normally blame for all the problems in the world? You guessed it:

This is a classic G.H.W. Bush covert ops playbook. GHWB escalated the Strategy of Tension to new levels of extreme violence during the time he was Director of the CIA. The Strategy of Tension involved blowing up high profile urban targets – usually train stations and airports – to blame it on left wing terrorists in election years.

See Strategy of Tension. There’s a lot history here in Europe of the CIA blowing up its allies’ civilians to influence elections. It won’t surprise me a bit if they are bringing the strategy home.

I agree with the banning. This site is, pardon my saying so, culturist. Racists hanging around casts a bad shadow on all of us.

This was obviously not Islamic terror as it was done at 3:45 am. It was done with respect for human lives. Muslims would have done it during peak tourist hours. Their goal is to create terror which is why it is called “terrorism.” This lame detonation helps us to understand the true nature of terrorism.

As for the bombing, it’s just another national disgrace to add to the Left’s Wall of Shame. When they aren’t attacking recruitment centers, they’re defacing Veterans’ Memorials–including the Wall in D.C. I’m just glad nobody was hurt. This time.

ReubenJCogburn on March 6, 2008 at 9:35 AM

Ah yes, it is the Right that is doing the bombing, just like they caused 9/11. I’m sure Earth First is a Rovian plot as well.

When will the Left ever accept responsibility for their actions — even if it is just a few extremists?

rbj on March 6, 2008 at 9:39 AM

Hopefully there’s blowback from violent acts like this, both in public outcry, and in DeMintish legislation designed to punish those groups/municipalities that attempt—by various means—to hinder military recruitment.

clark smith on March 6, 2008 at 9:42 AM

In the left’s demented mind’s anything and everything has to be a conspiracy. Why? Because the left “feel” they are the most compassionate lovers of freedom and all that is good. They “feel” no one that “feels” like them can do anything to hurt anyone. Just look to the history of the 60’s and see the destruction the fascist left students are capable of doing.

Grayzel on March 6, 2008 at 9:43 AM

When will the Left ever accept responsibility for their actions — even if it is just a few extremists?

rbj

Never, unfortunately. The dangers of moral relativism mean that right and wrong are redefined, and therefore, no responsibility is ever taken for anything. The idea is “who are *you* to judge that something is right or wrong”. 9/11 was the classic case. I didn’t take people 5 minutes to decide that
“America brought it on herself” or that it was GWB’s fault.

factoid,

“or did you just make up your comment in an effort to reinforce the climate of hate?

Ahh, Dude!!

When mizzz’s hot shot super liberal Steinem goes out and
purposely degenerates a man that was tortured for years in
a POW camp and served his country with honor, it is her that
is perpetuating the “climate of hate.”

But this is how the “progressives” that talk about how “intelligent”,”open minded”,and people of “peace”they are
do things.Anybody that disagrees with them is a racist, bigot, war monger that should be eliminated from society.

This is what the peaceful “progressives” call speaking truth to power:

We have the activists group Code Pink in the liberal capital of the Berkeley setting up camp in the front of a recruitment center calling our soldiers “war criminals, murderers, and child predators.”
They chain themselves to the doors to prevent anyone from
being able to enter and have physically prevented people from exercising their rights to make their own decisions.
The city council and the mayor have stated that they do not
want the Marines in their city and referred to them as “Bush’s gangsters.”The city also showed preferential treatment by granting them a spot right in front of the recruiting station to spout their obscenities at our men and
women in uniform and the very people who want to serve.

Medea Benjamin, the leader of code pink stated:
“We are the defenders of democracy, the upholders of the
Constitution.” “If it weren’t for people like the people in
Berkeley, standing up for what they believe, we’d be living under Hitler.”

I wonder if Howard Dean and Murtha still support and appreciate everything code pink is doing and stands for.
Nothing but silence from the democrats that say they support the troops but take hundreds and thousands of dollars from groups like this and lend them their support.

The Democratic group SDS overran a recruiting station in Washington DC,assaulting Soldiers and vandalizing the entire
office while yelling “Funk the war.”

Police arrest Micheal Burkett,Tom Burkett, sons of state
Sen. Michael Burkett (D) of Idaho’s 19th district, for Vandalizing two flag memorials dedicated to the Soldiers lost in Afghanistan and Iraq.

ROTC center in Chapel Hill is vandalized with red paint thrown on it and the words “F#ck off” and “We won’t fight your wars!” painted on the doors.

Indianapolis, IN. as reported by Kris Kirschner of Eyewitness News/March 30 2005.

Medal of Honor memorial has it’s glass panels smashed in,
obscene words about President Bush and Vice President Cheney spray painted on the walls along with, peace symbols, and hearts.
“It’s really an indication of how morally bankrupt people are who were involved in this,” said state police officer
Dave Bursten.

Where is the climate of hate coming from factoid?

Disturbed anti-war protester can’t find soldier, kills civilian with axe instead.

The suspect, Carlos Hartmann, 41, of Tecumseh, Mich.has confessed to the Sept. 8 killing on a train platform in the southern city of Roosendaal, defense lawyer Peter Gremmen said.

“He hates soldiers, and says that the army kills people, so it would be legitimate if he were also to kill someone…
from the American Military-or form its NATO allies,” Gremmen said in a telephone interview.

The American Thinker 2006

“This 22 year old guy walked up to him and asked if he lived in the house. When Jon said yes, the guy said”not
anymore” and shot him point blank in the chest. He tried to shoot him again, but his gun jammed. Jonathan made it into
the house. The guy then shot himself.Turns out the guy left a couple of suicide notes stating how much he hated the military and he wanted to go out making a statement, so he chose to make his statement on Independence Day trying to kill a Solider.”

M0ve0n.0g full page Ad in the New York Times (that they were given a discount on) stated in Sept. 2006 about
General Petraeus that he was a liar:

General Petraeus or General Betray Us?
was the headline.
The ad went on to accuse the General of cooking the numbers
and lying to congress and the American People.
The facts on the ground and an exhaustive amount of studies
by groups like the Brookings institute have shown that the move on ad was nothing but a smear.

Prior to the invasion of Iraq, Columbia University hosted a six-hour “teach in” conference attended by around
thirty of Columbia’s faculty. One of the speakers was Nicholas De Genova, professor of anthropology and Latin American studies. He stated:

“The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the US military.” He encouraged junior enlisted and
junior officers to murder their superior officers. He also wished for a “million Mogadishus,” referring to the 1993 battle where 18 American Soldiers were killed and dragged through the streets and 70 wounded.

This and the “intelligent” and “peaceful progressives” that
hold up signs that read:

We support the troops when they shoot their officers

We support the Insurgency

Fu#k the troops

US military bases are terrorist training camps

If we support the troops, aren’t we supporting terrorist?

and many other insightful statements from the elite liberals of moral authority.

Here’s some people that don’t feel this way:

Peter Hirschfeld of the Times Argus, Nov.9, 2007

IRAQI LEADERS THANK VT. SOLDIERS FOR SUPPORT

The Iraq delegation, fresh off meetings in Washington with
President Bush and Condolezza Rice, declared they had achieved victory over Al-Qaeda insurgents during a visit with Vermont veterans at Norwich University Thursday afternoon.

“Thank you for all your assistance to your friends in Iraq,”Rafe Al-Essawi, former Minister of state for Foreign Affairs, told Vermont soldiers through their interpreter.

“We have defeated Al-Qaeda in this very large province of AL Anbar as a result of our cooperation with your forces,”
Mamoon S. Rashid Al-Alwani, gonvernor of Al Anbar, said through an interpreter. “This victory came as a result of our cooperation with your forces and our bloods have spilled together.”

To liberals, the enemy is President Bush and the American
Soldier.

To the people based in reality, the enemy is the jihadist and the people that support them.

JetBoy on March 6, 2008 at 10:19 AM

The fact that the Kos kids would immediately point the blame at the right shows even most of them know it’s not the late 1960s-early 1970s anymore.

Back then, radical groups like the Weather Underground reveled in announcing to the press and to the world that they were the ones to blame for the latest attack on a military recruiting station or other government/university facility. But in the wake of Sept. 11, they know that do return to the Bill Ayres-Bernadette Dohrn days would be to immediately invite comparisons with al Qaida and bring the terrorist threat back to the forefront in the 2008 election.

But 6 1/2 years of having to limit their anger against the Bush Administration to verbal rants or deranged website postings may have finally caused a few to reach their limit, especially with the surge working and Democrats giving in to Bush on everything from Iraq funding to FISA renewal. If the NYC attack sparks any copycat incidents, it’s going to be fun to watch Hillary and Obama try to do U-turns on their recent positions, while Barak starts treating Bill Ayres with the same “who’s he?” attitude he currently has for Tony Rezko.

I think we ought to all wait for the facts and the investigation to mature before we go bashing liberals and pinkos. If we find out they were behind it, then feel free to go wild exposing them for the nutcases they are. But assuming it is some Code Pinko sympathetic is not helpful right now.

New York City Department of Transportation also has a streaming web site linked to camera pointed directly at the recruiting building from the north end of Times Square, but that camera was being serviced this morning. Whether that means it was out of service as well at 3:45 a.m. is unknown.

Okay, sorry about that, back to topic. I, for one, am not yet overly concerned. Yes, it does sound like someone is trying to resurrect the Weather Underground, but they are either timid, stupid, or both. If this repeats soon, then I’ll start worrying. Also, does it really surprise anyone? Students for a Democratic Society is back, why not the Weathermen? To aging Trotskyists, this seems like a perfect parallel to their heyday of the 1960′s and many of them are desperate to grab the limelight and prove they are still relevant. So while I agree with Subsunk that we should hold off with the jumping to conclusions, I must admit that it would not surprise me to find some “peace activist” types behind this, specifically at least one older ’60′s or Greenpeace-type veteran and a few younger addle-headed acolytes.

But, then again, I could be dead wrong.

UPDATE: It didn’t take long for the inevitable conspiracy-theory mavens to appear on Daily Kos. Diarist “antirove” claims that this could just be a conservative plot to make the Left look bad:

.
You don’t need conservatives(plot or otherwise) to make the left look bad.

“I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

Seems to me we ought to start taking that domestic part a little more seriously. I’m not talking about hampering freedom of speech. I’m talking about sedition.

blankminde on March 6, 2008 at 10:49 AM

Then the Right will want the book thrown at him just like if he was a Pinko. The left will want him on Time’s Man-Of-The-Year cover.

Limerick on March 6, 2008 at 10:26 AM

It happens too often for me to be surprised, but the left never seems to understand that some people want rules (e.g. the law) to be enforced. It used to be stunning, but now I’m used to it.

Let me offer these definitions: Liberal, someone who wants to win at any cost vs. Conservative, someonw who wants the rules to be followed.

Al in St. Lou on March 6, 2008 at 10:52 AM

…or rather punishing sedition in some reasonable fashion. Perhaps we could lock them up in that Assassinate Obama “art” show?

I won’t stand under YOUR Stars and Stripes….I’ll stand over here instead…BTW, I give permission for Hot Air to give you my name, address, telephone number, and the location every member of my family. We’ll be happy to sit down and discuss it with you…

May He who blessed our forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, bless the soldiers of the Israel Defence Forces, who stand watch over our land and the cities of our Lord, from the Lebanese border to the desert of Egypt and from the great sea to the verge of the wilderness, on land, in the air, and at sea. May God strike down before them our enemies who rise against us. May the Holy One save and spare our soldiers from all forms of woe and distress, of affliction and illness, and may He invest their every action with blessing and success. May he vanquish by their means those who hate us, and may He adorn them with a crown of deliverance and a mantle of victory. Thus may the verse be fulfilled: “For it is the Lord your God who marches with you to do battle for you against your enemy, to bring you victory.” Now let us respond “Amen.”

Limerick on March 6, 2008 at 9:07 AM

Amen.

I’m more on the left than most of you, and the thing that pisses me off more than anything is that there was really just no need for this. It did about as much as a bee sting and will be remembered as such…Also, it just further diminished ANY credibility from the left or any anti war position.

Finally…we do shit differently within the walls of this country. We’re supposed to be able to talk shit out…call each other names, rant on political blogs, not throw explosive shit at army recruitment centers.

As a side note, I’d really like to see the recruitment numbers from that station…just out of sheer curiosity.

New York City Department of Transportation also has a streaming web site linked to camera pointed directly at the recruiting building from the north end of Times Square, but that camera was being serviced this morning. Whether that means it was out of service as well at 3:45 a.m. is unknown.

Maybe the perp disabled the camera before planting the bomb?

I think it’s telling that the “antirove” diarist acuses “the right” of setting this up. When you can’t be sure wether it was a “legitimate left wing nutjob bombing” and a “conspiracy grounded fake left wing nutjob bombing” you’ve already missed the point–that no one is surprised if a left wing nutjob would do this.

Faith1 on March 6, 2008 at 11:15 AM

From reliable source, who must remain unnamed. A witness saw George Bush riding away from the scene on a bike. More when available.

pueblo1032 on March 6, 2008 at 11:16 AM

First I thought, let’s attach fireteams to the recruiting stations (much like at a foreign embassy), but that might get really messy…so maybe cops in cities such as New york should post at high risk recruitment targets – keeps the military’s hands clean, and provides a little law and order for the lawless left.

When will the Left ever accept responsibility for their actions — even if it is just a few extremists?

rbj on March 6, 2008 at 9:39 AM

This is the age of the victim. No one is responsible for their own actions. It’s the evil war in Iraq’s fault (as opposed to the not so evil war in Afghanistan).

I’ll agree with you there. I’ll even add Isam as a comparison. One thing you’re not offering is that the left fails to step up and condemn these actions that are so easily linked to their anti-war positions (assuming this is in fact the crazy side of the liberal spectrum). Personally I’m in a position where all I see is crazy liberal actions anymore, without a single mainstream liberal condemning it, and I’m starting to wonder if that’s what liberalism is now…eco-terrorism and mock torture.

Yea, and it really won’t be long until they escalate their nutjob behavior to “psycho killer”…Liberalism is a mental disorder and these guys are beyond that.
This reminds me of the idiots who strap bombs to themselves: they are the enemy within. The ends justify any means. The good news is that it may actually increase recruitment.

Good point – but I suggest that the left is much more invested in this tendency to tar with a wide brush than conservatives are. Go over to Kos a count the posts that condemn this. It won’t take long.

drunyan8315 on March 6, 2008 at 11:37 AM

And what if the perpetrator turns out to be a disgruntled soldier who wanted to retaliate for some perceived misdeed by his military superiors? I think we ought to all wait for the facts and the investigation to mature before we go bashing liberals and pinkos. If we find out they were behind it, then feel free to go wild exposing them for the nutcases they are. But assuming it is some Code Pinko sympathetic is not helpful right now.

Patience and facts will win the day.

Since I’m a degenerate gambler, I’m going to take the favorite for a dime and guess it was someone from the wacko left. I prefer to stay away from the long shot disgruntled soldier.

If the long shot pays then I will condemn him/her and call for max jail time. Just like I would if the favorite pays.

No excuse for this in any way. It is sad this kind of behavior occurs. What could you possibly think to accomplish?

About zero. Except that there’s a good chance the perpetrator here will also turn out to be a fringe leftist. I’d be surprised if he or she (a real possibility, I’d think) is affiliated with any particular domestic terror group like ELF.

Failure to condemn = tacit approval. If lefties don’t want to get lumped in with these radicals, they need to start speaking out against them.

So far, all I’m hearing from the left is that it’s a right-wing plot. That alone says volumes.

Vic on March 6, 2008 at 11:43 AM

From the same Dkos diary:

why a new Fairness Doctrine is so important (0 / 0)
the talk radio monopoly may be their most important spinning tool since there is no opportunity for rebuttal or counterpoint and they can send it all over the country.

whatever it is, wherever it happens, whoever does it, they can turn to their advantage before the evening news. talk radio is where the talking points get prechewed for the celebrity talking heads.

That’s right…shut down free speech YOU don’t agree with. I HATE liberals…really, I do.

It’s worth noting that the two things aren’t mutually exclusive. It could turn out to be a disgruntled ex-soldier (maybe even the recipient of a BCD?) who’s also a rabid anti-military activist. Either way, I’d expect he or she is a lone wolf.

(Incidentally, wasn’t there recently an episode of that show “Without A Trace” somewhat like this? I seem to remember some nonsense about a hippie chick disappearing after teaming up with some disgruntled military type to plot the bombing of a ROTC building at some university. In NYC, no less. It was a sleazy episode–I think the FBI even let her escape to Canada in the end because her heart was in the right place…).

Blacklake on March 6, 2008 at 11:48 AM

While Guiliani left the office of Mayor of NYC at the right time (he was starting to worry about jaywalking) I can’t help but wonder what the tone of this morning’s news conference would have been had he been Mayor and not Michael Bloomberg. My imagination isn’t adequate, but the thought of him speaking plainly and with power about the enemy or degenerate who bombed The Capital of the World fills me with longing.

“What are the odds that the people responsible for this are college professors in 20 years?”

It is not out of the realm of possibility that they are college professors today. Staying in graduate school, obtaining an advanced degree, and becoming a professor is not so much intelligence and maturity as it is perseverance and a lack of some other meaningful goal or direction.
