Breaking: Bombing at Big Apple military recruitment center Update: Serial bomber?

posted at 7:13 am on March 6, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Given the escalating protests over military recruitment, it seems inevitable that people would bomb those who seek to protect the nation and fight our enemies. This morning, unknown attackers bombed a Times Square military recruitment office. Thankfully, the office and the building that housed it was closed at the time of attack:

An explosive device damaged a military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, and police blocked off the area to investigate.

The explosive device caused minor damage, and no one was injured, police said. The explosion shattered a glass entryway. …

Witnesses staying at a hotel in the area said they heard a “big bang” and could feel the building shake. A large plume of smoke was also visible after the explosion, they said.

Melanie Morgan just wrote about the escalating attacks on military recruiters a week ago. She lists several cities where recruitment centers have been attacked in varying degrees, usually limited to vandalism and threats of violence. These operations have not hurt military recruiting at all. Michelle wrote about this two years ago (and many times since), and quite obviously the attackers have grown frustrated that they haven’t frightened off enough people to slow down the flow of recruits.

Now the movement has decided to morph into domestic terrorism. Of course, the people responsible will claim that they bombed the office during the night to keep anyone from being hurt. That’s exactly the same kind of rationalization that people like the Weather Underground and the SLA used at first, anyway — that terrorism was justified by their politics. In fact, a few like William Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn still claim that.

And what exactly are the politics behind this? The US does not have a draft any longer. The only people joining the military are those who volunteer to do so. The Code Pink protesters who throw paint, rocks, and the unknown terrorists who throw bombs want to disarm the nation while it’s under attack by radical jihadists, and at the same time want to stop young men and women from exercising their own choices. Since the Code Pink contingent and the nutcases who throw bombs can’t possibly win through the democratic process, they want to engage in intimidation — and now terrorism — to frighten people into acquiescence.

When this fails to achieve their goals, expect bombs to find human targets.

UPDATE: It didn’t take long for the inevitable conspiracy-theory mavens to appear on Daily Kos. Diarist “antirove” claims that this could just be a conservative plot to make the Left look bad:

It’s nothng [sic] new for the right to CAUSE or INCITE the violence, or to trigger arranged mob responses, and make sure it all gets pinned on the Left. And the right seems to be able to get the FBI and law enforcement to do this for them as well. Anarchy, chaos, property damage, physical harm, mayhem, murder, militarized police with massive crowd control equipment, are all ‘options’ the right are eager to use to shut down any potentially energizing movement.

I don’t think the Left needs much help in making themselves look like nutters, and “antirove” him/herself is Exhibit A.

UPDATE II: Bob Owens has some analysis from the photographs of the blast. He’s not sure whether this fits the profile of an anti-war activist attack.

UPDATE III: Police now say that the bomb was “roughly similar” to two other bombings in NYC, at the Mexican and British consulates. They have some clear video of the incident as well:

Officials said that in today’s attack, a man bundled in a gray hooded jacket or sweatshirt and wearing a backpack was seen riding a bicycle around the recruiting station and acting suspiciously moments before the explosion. Video footage from a surveillance camera showed a bicyclist dismounting, approaching the recruitment center, then returning to the bike and riding away before the explosion occurs.

Interesting. It fits closer to Bob Owen’s analysis. And I’ll say this much — if so, then my original post jumped to conclusions. The anti-war protesters have turned to intimidation and vandalism, and if unchecked will proceed to violence. However, this may not have had anything to do with the anti-war movement, and I should have been a little more circumspect about that this morning.

What an impotent protest of the military that ensures their right to protest.

jimbo2008 on March 6, 2008 at 7:16 AM

I was just about to send this into the tipline, guess I didn’t need to. Glad you’re on top of things! I’ll be curious what Allah thinks, given that he’s a New Yorker.

This is turning uglier and uglier. If the squeamish authorities do not get a handle on this kind of activity, the American Civil War of the 1800′s is going to look like a walk in the park…

Excellent commentary Captain.

Amazing how militant these anti-military types get isn’t it?

I imagine they carry signs that read, “Give peace a chance or I’ll kill you”.

I hope they find the nut job(s) that did this soon.

Thank God no-one was injured.

Not entirely on point, but can anyone point out a better way to ensure the rise of that draconian, fascist police state that these idiots are always complaining about?

James on March 6, 2008 at 7:20 AM

The pinko jackass’ are some of the ones that have started this. It’s time to bring those responsible for this to justice in a timely manner, and make an example of them. At least chase them into hiding in caves like the rest of the terrorists.

oakpack on March 6, 2008 at 7:24 AM

Bombing buildings in New York is no longer considered to be akin to excessive vandalism. Someone, probably more than one person, is going to go down hard for this and maybe never come back up.

Baphomet on March 6, 2008 at 7:29 AM

These are the same loonies who insist that they have the right to control their teenagers life by prohibiting a recruiter from contacting their child in school. They also want to keep other peoples’ children from the recruiters too. They don’t want children associated with a profession that may involve killing or being killed.

But, when it comes to children having total unfettered access to birth control, including abortion without any parental intervention, they are all for it, including for other peoples’ children. In other words, they have no problem letting children kill children as long as it is via abortion…

Sigh…

rbb on March 6, 2008 at 7:30 AM

Good point, James.

Considering the idiocy in Berkeley, does this come as any surprise? As things improve in the ‘war’, the anti-war left become more and more shrill in their demands we withdraw. They can’t tolerate the thought of an American victory. Expect more like this.

DngrMse on March 6, 2008 at 7:31 AM

They’re starting to act just like those the military is protecting them from. How long before they actually kill someone, or put a suicide vest under a burka? And, is this because the polls are showing greater support for the war? It will only backfire. It seems to me like they’re emulating their heroes.

Tony737 on March 6, 2008 at 7:32 AM

Hopefully this will result in some sort of common sense reaction in dealing with the nut cases playing games with military recruiters. Now that explosives are part of the anti-USA, anti-military crowd’s arsenal they should be treated as such and dealt with accordingly.

James on March 6, 2008 at 7:20 AM

Prescient. My first reaction to these incidents is that the recruitment centers need to employ higher levels of security and arms, exactly what their critics claim to hate. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

My second reaction is – the same. Give them what the want and so richly deserve. Beat protestors and shoot aggressors.

Actually James, this is a great point. Eco-terrorist in Washinton, military recruiting stations getting a share of domestic terrorism. Are the Chicago 68 riots that far behind? What is it that brings out the radical left from their “Rip Van Winkle” state of mind to prove anarcy gets the headlines while the nutbags get their phones tapped.

I don’t share your optimism but I hope you are right. My guess is that whomever is responsible will get a light punishment, if any. If there’s a jury involved, they’re the same people who like Obama and Clinton. If it’s a minority or woman involved, special rules will apply. Expect sympathy and explanations from the MSM and HuffPo, etc.

Rovin on March 6, 2008 at 7:38 AM

My thoughts exactly. The “anti-war progressive” crowd’s behavior today is tracking almost exactly with their MO of exactly four decades ago.

In spite of the rosy (drug-affected) memories of the enlightened elites’, the Vietnam “anti-war” (pro-Communist) movement never really became a noticeable factor until the 1968 Presidential election campaign. Speaking for myself, I never heard the infamous chant of “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?” until just before he announced that he wasn’t going to seek re-election (March of 1968).

And the real violence didn’t erupt until after the 1968 Tet (Lunar New Year) offensive, in which the Viet Cong guerrillas were not merely defeated, but nearly exterminated, by U.S., ARVN, and Allied forces (thank you, ANZACs and ROKs!). After that, the primary enemy in the “civil war we shouldn’t be involved in” was not “freedom fighters” from the South, but North Vietnamese Army regulars, culminating in the NVA’s 1972 spring offensive- which got the NVA savaged for its trouble.

“Tet ’68″ was a victory for our side- much like what’s happening in Iraq right now.

And like now, the “enlightened ones” went into violent hysterics- literally. How dare the “great Satan” (us) actually defeat the forces of Good (international Communism then, Islamism today)?

As Sherlock Holmes would say, the parallel is exact.

I wait with not-so-bated breath for “The Days of Rage II” in Denver in August.

The question is not, “will the ‘enlightened ones’ repeat their performance?”

They’re already starting. And why not?

After all, from their standpoint, it worked the last time.

cheers

This is positively pathetic and cowardly. It’s no wonder they did it off hours as I’m sure anyone inside who wasn’t harmed would come out and give them the dental rearrangement they deserve if it was buring business hours.

They need to stop calling themselves the ‘peace’ or ‘anti-war’ movement, they need to call themselves the ‘we oppose anything that’s not done by a democrat socialist’ movement

No, but considering that it is their goal to have a communist state I’m not surprised they would do it. They constantly try to goad authorities into confrontation to show how conformational and oppressive authorities are. As long as we continue to believe they are for peace and freedom the more of a foothold they will make towards their communist utopia. Remember they have always dealt in new speak were right is wrong, black is white and up is down. The task is how to expose them for what they are in a world were they have the high ground of higher education and have no problem using it to meet their ends.

jmarcure on March 6, 2008 at 8:43 AM

To co-opt a concept from Orson Scott Card’s novel Empire both the extreme left and extreme right are the danger to the possibility of a civil war..”all it takes is for one group to feel so agrieved that they us their own weapons or the weapons of the state to “prevent’ the other side from bringing about thier supposed “evil” designs, than that other side will have no choice but to take up arms against them. Both sides will believe the other is the instigator.”
And before you dismiss this idea out of hand consider examples like Yugoslavia and Rwanda..it doesn’t require a clear geographical boundry to create such division just a clear devide and an unwillingness on both extremes to consider or allow the opinions of the other side to be accepted with out demonization. Things like this bombing are steps on that slippery slope to civil war.

Times Square MUST have many security cameras running 24/7. The military recruitment centers must have security cameras as well. So the bombers should be identified.

Code Pink is as stupid as the day and night are long. It takes an idiot to do a domestic bomb, the type of idiot that excuses their own idiocy as they blame it upon others, the type that equates their personal right to domestically bomb with a nation’s right to exercise warfare.

But one should question every angle, counter-effect motivation, timing of event vs. stories consuming the public included. What will GWB do? And regarding our candidates, what will Hillary say compared to what Obama would not do or what McCain would do? Blame Hillary’s friends.

I am not a Zionist, nor am I a “crypto-Jew” I am just a Jew.

Match point!

Well met Squid.

Krydor:

Using terms like “Crypto-Jewish” is a way certain people….like the guy you quoted…attempt to disguise their anti semitic feelings. They don’t hate all jews….just the ‘crypto’ ones. It’s called ‘tolerance’, as defined by the various kooks on DU, and other virulent leftist sites.

Dude…

I think you would be more at home here.

Mike Honcho on March 6, 2008 at 9:06 AM

Everyone who is for killing muslims for oil company profits is obviously either a jew or a crypto-jew. It’s very clear and logical, since no white person would want to fight Israel’s / jewish lobby’s wars and spill their own white blood.

kafiiri on March 6, 2008 at 9:04 AM

Wait…there’s a way to kill Muslims AND generate profits for my oil stocks?

I won’t stand under YOUR Stars and Stripes….I’ll stand over here instead…BTW, I give permission for Hot Air to give you my name, address, telephone number, and the location every member of my family. We’ll be happy to sit down and discuss it with you…

May He who blessed our forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, bless the soldiers of the Israel Defence Forces, who stand watch over our land and the cities of our Lord, from the Lebanese border to the desert of Egypt and from the great sea to the verge of the wilderness, on land, in the air, and at sea. May God strike down before them our enemies who rise against us. May the Holy One save and spare our soldiers from all forms of woe and distress, of affliction and illness, and may He invest their every action with blessing and success. May he vanquish by their means those who hate us, and may He adorn them with a crown of deliverance and a mantle of victory. Thus may the verse be fulfilled: “For it is the Lord your God who marches with you to do battle for you against your enemy, to bring you victory.” Now let us respond “Amen.”

I experienced this before getting banned from DU (for the 7th time). Cypto-Jews are pratically defined as “Republican” Jews. mostly because republican Jews are generally non-practicing.

We have to bring these people, who would do such things, out of the shadows. Maybe we could offer them drivers licenses or in-state tuition.

Why would the “vast right wing conspiracy” bomb a recruiting station in New York?

To declare war on Hillary?

Bunch of idiots.

I don’t know but I know what the late William Buckley would have said about being called a crypto-nazi.

As someone mentioned above, Times Square must have cams galore. Whoever did this had to be either invisible or the dimmest bulb in America.

Remember Lim, there’s a prob. with cameras in NYC. The camera that filmed the black columbia professor attaching a noose to her own door still won’t cough up it’s film.

Mayor Bloomberg just commented on this. He is pissed and says they will prosecute the perp. to the fullest extent of the law.

About a civil war in this country, ain’t gonna happen, we’ll have a dictator before that happens.

cjs1943 on March 6, 2008 at 9:25 AM

I thnk someone elwse aluded to this earlier, but I think we may be headed for yet another civil war. This time, it’ll be patriots vs left-wing nutburgers.

It would be laughable if it wasn’t so freakin’, insanely frustrating that liberals on Daily Kos are blaming republicans.

They are really mentally disturbed, aren’t they? I mean full blown psychosis…
