Video: O’Reilly can’t let the HuffPo/Nazi analogy go

posted at 10:09 pm on March 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

So enamored is he of this comparison, in which allowing a few incendiary blog comments to creep through moderation is tantamount to the birth of the Third Reich, that he brought MK back for a second go at it after last week’s debacle. With this he achieves what was once thought impossible: He gets right-wing bloggers to line up on the side of Arianna Huffington.

Pay close attention to the sample comments at the beginning of the clip. Your exit question: How many of them are worse than his pal Geraldo saying he’d like to spit on Michelle, an offense which did not earn Spitty a banning from the Factor?

We’re really through the looking glass this political season. Up is down, right is left, Conservatives amaze themselves by voting for Hillary and the dextrosphere supports HuffPo.

My head hurts – I think it’s time for a long nap:)

This o’reilly character loves to give free publicity to these lefty troll sites. I wonder how much they pay him.

Buddahpundit on March 5, 2008 at 10:17 PM

Since I’m such a superficial person, I’ll chose to focus on MKH’s look and ignore the entire point of this post. MKH goes for the ‘Natural-Relaxed Ham’ look and scores. She’s found her true style here. No pink curtain, no glasses, just a very attractive Ham-as-Ham look. A fine looking woman by any measure. With Ham, the less bling the better.

AUINSC on March 5, 2008 at 10:20 PM

Sorry Allah, but no amount of O’Reilly calling the HuffPo bloggers Nazis is going to make me line up on their side. Mostly because I wonder in some regard if most of those commenters on those pages have nazi opinions and tendencies, just instead of Jews (though I imagine Zionists would be the correct liberal PC word for it) on their own its republicans, conservatives, libertarians, moderate democrats and most non-neutered white men. Do those comments mean Huffington’s a nazi? No, but you guys do well enough of a job policing your site, as does LGF and Ace and others, that not cleaning up those comments and/or banning the speakers is tacit agreement.

I’m sorry but how many times do they all need to say that they want us all dead and dismembered and whatnot before you at least listen and worry with some seriousness? Or is this very much like the 1930s with the Jews of Germany who kept saying “We’ve seen this before, it can’t be that bad or any worse then before”?

Defector01 on March 5, 2008 at 10:20 PM

It is dumb that he harps on HuffPo about individual comments, when there is plenty to criticize in their actual blog posts. And if you are going to talk about the comments, you should do it in the context of “this is the RULE, not the exception”, because the hate and venom is the norm in lefty blog comments. It’s not a few here and there, it’s just an endless string of hate with a few “normal” (though usually still dumb) comments peppered throughout.

At any rate, there are plenty of other ways to draw parallels between the left and Nazis. And while I haven’t read it, I suspect Jonah Goldberg does a decent job in his much talked about book:
http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Fascism-American-Mussolini-Politics/dp/0385511841

(Though he constantly claims, in interviews I’ve seen, he’s not trying to call the American left fascists)

O’Reilly needs a wake up call to what the Internet is.

Fields on March 5, 2008 at 10:22 PM

I’m grateful for Michelle for creating this great forum. And to be fair, I’ll admit that I have some resentment towards O’Reilly for why Michelle no longer appears on his show. Yet, even after over-compensating for my biases, I still find O’Reilly’s argument here simply moronic. At times, people will say extreme things in political debate. It happens on HuffPo. It happens here. It happens everywhere. We may wish that everyone would always be polite, but they won’t. We shouldn’t call them Nazis for an infraction. We should just ask they be polite. Most people will be polite when asked. Those that won’t, we’ll just call them muslims.

Bill may have graduated from Harvard, but he’s being a total idiot here. Comparing people to Nazis, even if it’s the demagogues at Huffington Post, is never a good idea. All it does is make you look bad, and puts conservatives in the uncomfortable position of having to defend Arianna Huffington.

The Nazi analogy is ridiculous. If O’Reilly made it a respect/decency issue, he’d make more headway.

Connie on March 5, 2008 at 10:28 PM

OReilly’s defense modifies what he originally said. He didn’t say that they “use the same tactics as the Nazis.” He said, “they are as bad as the Nazis”.

He backed down, but he won’t admit it.

No spin? Yeah right.

BOR is the worst kind of populist. He sticks his finger up and figures out what will get the largest part of his target demo fired up and then he rants about it for a while. He lost me years ago when he tried to claim sole credit for the whole “boycott France” thing. F15Mech on March 5, 2008 at 10:39 PM

I used to like O’Reilly, but he is becoming increasingly annoying. He asks MKH open-ended questions and then interrupts constantly. Of course, he does this with everyone else in the interest of “preventing spin”, but in actuality, he likes to ask questions not to get an answer, but more so he can spout his own opinion. Egomaniac! Everyone on his program appears in spite of him because of the exposure. In fairness, if I was invited, I’d tolerate him as well just for the airtime, so I can understand why everyone suffers through the segment. It’s tough to watch him sometimes.

O’Reilly is a jackass – AND he wrong 60% of the time.

If he thinks something IS so – that is sufficient basis to believe that it is not.

O’Reilly is the Nazi - talking about limiting freedom of speech. He said that, on HIS site – he kicks people off who say things like “I wish that Bill O’Reilly would die painfully.” Of course, I would NEVER say anthing like that – oh, wait, I guess I just did. Of course, I didn’t really MEAN it…..but, I did say it.

According to Bill – that is not “freedom of speech”, it’s Nazism, or something like that. I haven’t liked O’Reilly for years – he’s a phony and he “adopts” opinions and shifts what he “adopts” every so often to try and jack up his audience ratings. He’s a poseur.

shooter on March 5, 2008 at 10:49 PM

O’Reilly is basically calling for the HuffPo to have gatekeepers, in the same way newspapers (or Bill in his viewer mail segment) do when they pick out the letters they will and won’t show the public. Which isn’t what the Internet is about — it’s true broadcasting of ideas, as opposed to the narrowcasting of ideas that print and video are limted to due to space requirements.

By calling for censorship, O’Reilly makes the same mistake McCain and others have on campaign finance reform, in believing all you need is … one … more … law and the problem will be solved. But just as manditory full disclosure of campaign donations, without limits on free speech, is the best answer for CFR, exposure of some of the more hateful ideas posted at websites like HuffPo and elsewhere is the best way to combat that problem. You can’t ban that type of speech (try it and many sites would just go offshore for hosting), but you can make it known where hate speech occurs, and if that type of speech is either ignored or even condoned by certain websites.

jon1979 on March 5, 2008 at 10:50 PM

Somebody needs to burst the “O’Reilly Bubble.”

The poor guy is so full of himself, every time I accidentally stumble upon Fox News at his time, the TV swells, starts getting very hot and is ready to explode.

1 – O’Reilly is so full of himself, he invented the 11th commandment:

Thou Shalt Worship Bill O’Reilly with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your being.

2 – O’Reilly is so full of himself, he thinks that the Earth rotates around itself because he said so.

3 – O’Reilly is so full of himself, he thanks himself everyday for creating himself.

4 – O’Reilly is so full of himself, he thinks the Bible mentioned his second coming.

5 – O’Reilly is so full of himself, he thinks he is the Third person of the Trinity: O’Reilly, Son and Holy Spirit.

I’m taking this just as an example. How does talking about limiting freedom of speech and banning people from a web site make someone a Nazi?

I was standing at a bus stop the other day and someone looked at me kind of funny. What a Nazi.

Is there anything a normal person can do to avoid becoming a Nazi? It seems that membership of Nazi party has become compulsory these days, moreso than it was in 1930s Germany.

Jaibones on March 5, 2008 at 11:07 PM

Here’s the Reader’s Digest Condensed Version of how to watch O’Reilly:

1) Watch the Talking Points Memo. You can see where the rest of the program is going.

2) If he uses the term “Nazi”, switch the channel. The program will suck.

3) If Dennis Miller is on, hang with it, but expect O’Reilly to interrupt Miller so much, that the rants Miller is famous for is lost.

4) The Culture Quiz is also good to watch, but I feel sorry for Steve and Martha because they have to suffer O’Reilly’s condescention. (It’s easy to do that when you have the answers in front of you, ala Alex Trebek.)

5) Glenn Beck is always an alternative, even though he is on CNN.

Chakra Hammer on March 5, 2008 at 10:32 PM

That’s not the point. With every fruitcake out there calling everyone else a “Nazi,” no one will pay the proper amount of attention to it. He and I are of the same generation. The quality of discourse in general has deteriorated, especially with the rise of the Internet. The anonymity of it seems to bring out the basest behavior and “speech.” I agree that it is 100% worse on the left, but it does appear everywhere, including here.

The dispute between O’Reilly and MKH really has more to do with what various site owners believe is “over the top.” I am simply saying I think he would have better luck if he stuck with that point. For the most part, though, I think arguing over what is said on the Internet with O’Reilly is pretty pointless because he is simply not savvy enough about it and refuses to learn.

The MSM is trying to do that by trying to say the internet media is below them (kinda like the newspaper/TV era I expect).

Billy boy does have a point; Huff & Puff along with DHeadKos and many other “progressive” sites are nothing but cesspools of intolerance regarding anything outside their enlightened group think fascist perspectives. Most if not all of us look at what the MSM pedals as news and wonder what planet they are reporting from. Billy’s show has deteriorated to little more than an entertainment magazine with all those hard-hitting stories on Britney, Aruba and body language. Every now and then he manages to scratch the surface of a real issue, which is more than can be said for most of the MSM. Hey, he’s putting MKH on so cut the guy a little slack!

There’s a difference between posting on a public sight and using a private sight to sprout this stuff. Anything I write on HotAir or LGF, etc will be tied to that particular blog as a comment. As such HotAir/Malkin/LGF/Etc have a duty to eliminate any quotes that go too far, a general police duty in that regard. If you step over the line here you get tossed and rightfully so and your comment deleted. If you open a blog on its own to espouse such beliefs then those are tied to just YOU, and no one else. Its the difference between an individual voice and a community.

And yet somehow no one seems to note that on everyone of these liberal chat sites there are people openly calling for our murders and deaths, along with every prominent Conservative/Republican and any perceived moderate democrats.

Everyone seems to waive their noses at the fact that O’Reilly is the one saying that, lets face facts, we’ve commented on that ourselves whenever a new DailyKOs diary or DU thread comes out with some horrible thesis about America/the military/Christians/etc and a bunch of clapping castrati agreeing with it. O’Reilly is basically saying the same thing alot of people, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this included some higher ups on hot air/lgf etc, are thinking. And again, if they constantly state over and over and over that so many of them would party over our deaths and the deaths of our beliefs and even more have stated how they’d like to take that step to make such a reality, then is this ‘respect for freedom of speech’ or willful blindness?

I’m not suggesting we reply in kind, we are better, but at the very least (to paraphrase the left), Call a Spade a Spade. Call them how they act, how they sound and what they preach. And that includes commenters on those sites as their hosts lack of ability/desire to control the commenters shows either laziness at best or at worst agreement (tacit or otherwise).

My point was that if a private site wants to ban me (or prevent my freedom of speech /sarc) sure they are free to do that…

Have the government step in and regulate it?

And if so what government?

F15Mech on March 6, 2008 at 1:17 AM

Bill is such a laughably stupid fucker

I cannot comprehend why Ms Ham lowers herself to appear on his wretched show.

LimeyGeek on March 6, 2008 at 1:19 AM

Bill is such a laughably stupid *censored*

I’d be careful about that.

I agree, But even, I won’t drop the f-bomb here.

By that standard, nobody could try to better society, for fear of being a hypocrite as we all fall short, we are all sinners all fallible as we are human.

Chakra Hammer on March 6, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I hear ya, Mr. Hammer. I don’t claim to be perfect, not at all.

But being naive is one thing, But abjectly Stupid and hypocritical is another.

Too, it’s one thing to be a regular person, but Bill O’ is one quite the hudge bully pulpit. You’d think he’d show a bit more smart than this.

Give the Lib’s more reasons to call us idiots. (like Keith O. for example, I mean, why give the guy ammo to fire the weapon, ya know?)

WayWard Fundamentalist Christian on March 6, 2008 at 1:39 AM

but Bill O’ is one quite the hudge bully pulpit

OOPS! Make that…

“But Bill HAS quite the Bully Pulpit.”

Missed the memo, I guess.

There’s a difference between posting on a public sight and using a private sight to sprout this stuff. Anything I write on HotAir or LGF, etc will be tied to that particular blog as a comment.

Bears repeating.

Good. Improvements are being made.

Connie on March 6, 2008 at 1:48 AM

I definitely agree Geraldo should be kicked off of Fox.
That spitting comment was outrageous by anyone’s standards.
And to be directing it towards a Fox contributor, who happens to be sweet and intelligent woman, and never deserved such talk was alarming.
Anytime Geraldo is on he bogarts the conversation. I’ll never forget when Tom Tancredo was on and he didn’t let him get a word in edgewise, yet I also blame Sean for allowing it.
Geraldo was just as hateful and still on Fox. Makes sense?
I don’t think so. O’Reilly bringing this up again with MK doesn’t make sense either. Let it go man.

Ban them both I say.

No cast people that have no respect for other peoples religion off of the plank.

F15Mech on March 6, 2008 at 2:18 AM

and I stress the word RESPECT. You can disagree and debate another persons religion but put some thought behind it.

I respect everyones’ right to worship whatever thingy they believe exists. I will even bear arms to defend same.

I expect others to respect my right to ridicule the absurdity of it all.

Your rights to ridicule other people do not necessarily transfer to a privately owned website, one that you take the time to insult the owner.

I never claimed any such thing.

If Michelle Malkin is so vulnerable that she is grievously wounded by my simple spoonerism, then let her wield the mighty ban hammer and smite me.

As for you, F15Mech, quit being such a poof.

LimeyGeek on March 6, 2008 at 2:33 AM

Here’s the deal:

Remember when Eddie Murphy got caught trolling for hookers and ended up with a tranny in his passenger’s seat? Since then his movies have sucked because every line he speaks is meant to make him believe that he is making us forget that he is sexually….experimental.

Same can be said of Bill-O. Since the Loofah Files Bill has been trying to live as if he did not recommend using a loofah during sex.

Quite simply, Bill humped the shark.
