Petraeus for VP! - Steve Z

Not a bad idea. We know how he is on National Defense, but where does stand on taxes? Anyway, I hope Johnny Mac only does one term and V.P. Petraeus (or V.P. Mitt) wins in a landslide in 2012.

Nah, we need the General in Baghdad and his image kept intact as a professional.

I nominate Pamela Geller for VP! Courage, conviction and commitment who can handle the 3 AM phone call and the Sit Room.

Listened to the audio at the link. I appreciate NPR's professionalism and refusal to revise history as per the leftist narrative. I also deeply appreciate an illegal immigrant stepping forward to earn her citizenship by defending & avenging America. Indeed, America is in debt to its warrior class.

That said: There's Senator McCain and then there's the Democrats. Especially with that Chicago mobster who thinks we should reinvade Iraq. I just hope when he reenacts OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM he does with his mobsters and not our troops.

July 4, 2007 · The Fourth of July cookout at Camp Victory in Iraq drew some big-name visitors this year. Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. commander in Iraq, was there to preside over re-enlistment ceremonies. And Sen. John McCain, struggling in his campaign for president, told the troops that the country is behind them.

Polls show that McCain's strong support of the war is costing him among potential voters. The event at which the Arizona senator spoke today marked two milestones: More than 160 service members received U.S. citizenship — and 500 re-enlisted.

The soldiers at the Baghdad base are well aware of McCain's more than 20 years as a naval airman — and the five and a half he spent as a prisoner of war. He told the troops that there is no place he'd rather be on this Fourth of July, and that he understands their sacrifice.

Jeez. I don't think NPR is gonna be happy that they put this stuff online, or kept these transcripts LOL

Compare and contrast....notice the date

January 24, 2007 · There are 25 members on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and they wield a lot of power. Every major military appointment or confirmation has to pass through them.

One of the best ways for a military commander to ingratiate himself with these senators is to admit mistakes in Iraq.

So as the soon-to-be top ground commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, met Senators Tuesday, he told them the situation in Iraq is "dire."

The hearing — required as Petraeus is confirmed for a job that will give him a fourth star, making him one of the Army's most senior officers — was really a sort of dance as various senators sought to make their own points about the conflict in Iraq.

"General Petraeus, you have said serious mistakes were made in Iraq since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003?" asked Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT).

"That's correct," Petraeus said.

Lieberman pressed on: "And you've said you understand and appreciate the disappoinment of the American people?"

"That is correct, sir," came the reply.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), used his time to make some of his points in a round-about fashion.

"Suppose we send you over to your new job, general, only we tell you you can't have additional troops," said McCain. "Can you get your job done?"

"No sir," Petraeus said.

"Suppose that we send you additional troops and we tell those troops that we support you, but we are convinced you cannot accomplish your mission. What effect would that have on your troops?" asked McCain.

"Well, it would not be a beneficial one, sir," Petraeus said.
And some senators weren't interested in asking questions at all.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) used her eight minutes to rail against sending more troops to Iraq."And I disapprove of the policy, I think it's a dead end," she said. "But if we're gonna do it, let's make sure we give these young men and women everything when we're not doing the political equiation to match for their safety and success."

As far as the intended topic of this thread is concerned, General Patreaus is going to go down in history as one of the most brilliant/competent/impressive figures in the history of our nation.

Grant was all of the above but someone linked to an article in a thread from yesterday showing how historians and public perception had written him out of the picture.

I don’t get it. General Petraeus says we’re winning but the opinion polls last year said we were losing. It’s almost as if those opinion polls didn’t mean anything.

Look at it like this. How does victory in Iraq prevent some nutbag Saudi on a student visa from plowing his car into an El Al office? It doesn't. No borders=no security.

Friendly reminder to all leftards: It's General David Petraeus - NOT Betray-Us.

Just thought the trolls needed the reminder.

G*d bless our troops, for they are saving & avenging America and contributing to world peace - not Code Pink, MoveOn.org and their fellow ilk.

America has the greatest military in the universe.

Depends on whether said timetable is leaked to the NYT/announced by Democrats or classified and flexible.

“The key is to hang on to what you’ve got,” he said.

Channeling Joe Tex.

Troll Alert!!! Do not feed the troll Baphomet.

The poor quality commenters that have found their way onto this site following the last commenter registration is painful. Its almost impossible to have a good quality discussion around here without being infested by the ill-bred and/or trolling garbage. Jeesh. Just get a life and go away please.

As far as the intended topic of this thread is concerned, General Patreaus is going to go down in history as one of the most brilliant/competent/impressive figures in the history of our nation. That is saying alot. There was a time, not too long ago, when I was skeptical about the fact that men like this even existed any more. I am so happy to have learned otherwise.

All Petraeus has to do is sprinkle the words hope and change in his testimony and they`ll be bowing before him.

Most likely not, but worth a shot. :)

Naturally, all the lefties and RINOs will say it's all a big lie, and that nothing we hear coming out of Iraq is true.
