We don’t bracket Islam with wacko death cults, because a) it’s an old religion and b) many of its believers are normal.

Yet practiced properly, Islam is as scary and divorced from reality as any new age death cult. This is never more obvious than when their prophet or holy book is criticised.

Of course members of all religions can get offended – deeply offended, but the cult-like, brainwashy nature of an Islamic upbringing is in a different stratosphere to ordinary religious grievance.

Deny the holocaust, suppress a Buddhist sect or make a work of art depicting Jesus with urine, and expect a torrent of well reasoned, argument. Expect petitions. Maybe a civil lawsuit or a non-violent protest.

Denigrate Mohammed and you’ll get all that, plus the cult-like aspects. The violence, the burning of effigies, the murders and deaths.

This is because, after the extremes of an Islamic upbringing, even a slight perceived insult to the Prophet is far worse than someone punching their granny in the face.

Holding something sacred is fine, but when it skews your values to that extend is is messed up. Out of sync with daily reality. Dangerous.

Perhaps some of this reaction is also down to shock value. the new era of global communication means that previously detached peasants in Afghanistan & Pakistan get to hear about these things, yet haven’t learned how to cope.

This is all the more reason to not shy away from free speech. It is they that need to be desensitized, not us that need to show “sensitive restraint”. Why? Because we are right and they are wrong.

I don’t mind if some cultures never get the idea that people are free to criticize (everything) for important reasons, but I wish our culture still got it. If we are going to agree to disagree, fine–but I would like to go ahead and wear a T-shirt with Mohammed’s face on it over here where I live. I remember Michelle had the auditorium address hijacked not long ago (I think it was during the In Defense of Internment circuit?) by free-speech-enthusiasts that kind-of sort-of missed the point.

Germany was a Fascist nation where criticism of Hitler and Mein Kampf was a serious crime that carried the death sentence.

Quite so. The islamic empire of old was the preeminent source of science and technology. Only an educated historian could describe its stagnation over the last thousand years.

But stagnate it has. If evolutionary theory has any merit, even in the abstract, then islam is destined for extinction.

Why should we deny the opportunity to facilitate its predictable demise? The ‘evolved’ survive while the failures perish.

Agreed, Islam has been a problem for centuries. There was a time, long long ago, when brilliant minds created some of the worlds greatest mathematicians and philosophers. Indeed, Muslim contribution to Science, Mathematics, Astronomy, and Philosophy in the Middle Ages were truly once tremendous.

That was then, this is now…. it’s as if their society, religion and culture failed to keep up with history. Instead, it perverted itself into the monster of all evils.

Scream, burn, rage, destroy, smash, pillage, overturn, shoot, behead, explode and ransack, yes.

Cry… not so much.
