The fact that he didn’t wear a flag lapel pin in and of itself is not a concern.

It’s his explanation of why he didn’t wear one, and the fact that he claims to have taken it off after 9/11 that is astonishing -which is the polar opposite of how everyone else responded.

I doubt that he wore one before 9/11, so I think this story has as much veracity as John Kerry’s tossing his medals over the White House fence.
