ABC: Rezko in $50 million hole

Drip, drip, drip:

Accused Illinois fixer Antoin “Tony” Rezko is in debt by $50 million and relies on “family” handouts of $7,500 a month to pay monthly costs, according to a previously sealed court transcript reviewed by ABC News.

Rezko’s bleak financial picture raises the question of how the Rezkos were able to buy a vacant lot adjoining the home of Sen. Barack Obama in 2005, at a time Rezko says he was already in deep debt.

Rezko also reveals in the testimony, before Judge Amy St. Eve on Jan. 16, 2007, that he already knew he was under federal investigation at the time of the land purchase and had hired a criminal defense attorney to deal with the “feds.”

Obama says he sought Rezko’s help because the house he wanted to buy in Chicago’s Hyde Park came with an adjoining lot the seller wanted to sell at the same time.

So even though he had the feds on his case at the time and he had no clean source of income, he went into the deal with Obama to buy the land. In order to make that deal, he had to have his wife buy the property, even though her income and assets clearly didn’t qualify her for a $500,000 loan — let alone produce the $125,000 down payment. During this time, Obama maintains that he didn’t know anything about this situation, nor did he think anything amiss when he paid $104,000 to the Rezkos to buy a strip of land from their lot.

And how does Rezko pay his lawyers now? “Friends.” He has no source of income now, either, and his lawyers told the court that Rezko has not paid them — at least, not directly — since the indictment. Could one of these “friends” be Nadhmi Auchi, the British billionaire who got convicted of fraud charges himself in France?

I guess this could make Obama PROUD to be an American. Welcome to the spotlight Senator!

TroubledMonkey on March 5, 2008 at 2:01 PM

During this time, Obama maintains that he didn’t know anything about this situation,

Is that true? I thought he admitted he knew Rezco was under investigation and thus it was a “boneheaded move” to make a land deal with him.

Hmmm, does this put him in a position to have to ask a favor from one of the couples that is infamous for hiding shady deals from their past? “C’mon. Hill, let’s put the past behind us and work together to totally bamboozle the people”

bbz123 on March 5, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Oops, never mind. By “This situation” you are referring to the fact he was flat broke.

You would have to understand how things work here in Illinois when it comes to politicians and various public officials doing dumb things like this. They don’t call it “The Chicago Way” for nothing.

pilamaye on March 5, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Just add tax hike, stir, and no more hole!

Shy Guy on March 5, 2008 at 2:08 PM

So, tony rezko is like my brother with a bigger budget, huh?

lorien1973 on March 5, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Why did Obama use Rezko at all? Why not just buy both lots? Obama’s first book was published in 2004, so he must have had a little change. It’s very strange.

IMO,There is much, much more to this story than meets the eye.

Obama is hoping the topic changes very soon.

Why THAT house? Shop long enough and whatever you are looking for will crop up. Looks like the appreciation was just too much of a temptation for someone to pass up, flaky friend or not.

Dear Lord. I can’t wait for SNL this weekend. Who will play Rezko?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on March 5, 2008 at 2:18 PM

I hope there there is really something dirty going on here and not just a “boneheaded move”.

Very shady dude….Clinton land deals, Obama land deals. I don’t see CHANGE here. I see the SAME….Frauds!!!

Can you imagine trying to convince your wife to do this? I don’t know about you fellas, but at Casa de la Pyle, Momma is usually the voice of reason…like that time I tried to explain to her why I NEEDED to buy the BMG .50!

With family like this, who needs a job?

Now, this type of thing needs more scrutiny.

Bit of a stretch but plausible enough considering messiah’s background that he needs to do some radical damage control. Or, it could just be good old American graft and corruption. I’ll bet Harold Ickes is playing some media chips about now.

Just sayin…..

bbz123 on March 5, 2008 at 2:26 PM

Well, slap myself upside the head and call me doggy. Doesn’t “boneheaded” – particularly in a deal with the likes of Antoin Rezko – say just a little something about the Obamessiah’s JUDGEMENT in general?

marybel on March 5, 2008 at 2:29 PM

“Boneheaded move.”

Expound on that a bit, would you please Mr. O? Its unbelievable he’s gotten a pass up until now based on that “mea culpa.”

If only Nixon had thought of the “boneheaded move” defense.

In agreement with Mrs. Obama, I’m thrilled that an amoral, cynical Harvard lawyer and his shoot-from-the-lip missus has an opportunity to seek the highest office in the land. Also, like the Obamas, I continue to hope for a brave new America, one where an Iraqi-connected Syrian slumlord can rise so high in the crooked machinations of my home state’s political culture. Tell me, is there one other place on earth where such hyper-ambitious individuals have a prayer of being something more than mere crooks, and can instead aspire to the highest reaches of graft and corruption…I mean, other than China, Russia, North Korea, Syria, the United Nations, nearly all of Africa, and Chicago?

Flyover Country on March 5, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Flashback.

Obama said his family’s real estate broker brought the house to his wife’s attention*. He said he discussed the house with Rezko but isn’t sure how Rezko began pursuing the adjacent lot. But Obama raised the possibility that he was the first to bring the lot to Rezko’s attention.

“I don’t recall exactly what our conversations were or where I first learned, and I am not clear what the circumstances were where he made a decision that he was interested in the property,” Obama said.

I may have mentioned to him the name of [a developer and] he may at that point have contacted that person. I’m not clear about that,” Obama said.

I’m not clear about this either, Barry, since it makes no sense.

*note that his wife was on the Landmarks Commission Board, so the odds are she knew about the property being for sale from that perch, but I digress.

Has Rezko adopted Nadhmi Auchi? That might explain the payoffs handouts.

Reminds me of that SNL skit where the producer moans of only having $20 million while the writers get a whole $200K.

I’m lucky enough to have a whole $2.5K / month, don’t know how I’d get by on only $7.5K.

Nadhmi Auchi “lent” 3.5 million US dollars to Antoin Rezko after he learned he was under federal investigation. Nadhmi Auchi also “lent” 3.5 million US dollars to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s chief fundraiser Christopher Kelly after he learned he was under federal investigation.

Guess who was in favor of invading Iraq and deposing Saddam Hussein? Nadhmi Warbucks.

What’s so important to Auchi in Illinois that he would float huge loans to important brass in the Democrat party of Illinois?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3433363.ece?Submitted=true

The London Times has an interesting timeline about dealings between Iraqi billionaire Nadhmi Auchi and Antoin Rezko. \

Among the highlights:

In April 2005, Auchi’s General Mediterranean Holding (GMH) company lends $3.5 million to Rezko.

In June 2005, Barack Obama buys his mansion for $1.65 million, $300K below the asking price, on the same day Mrs. Rezko buys the adjoining vacant lot for $625K.

September 2005: Auchi’s GMH lends another $11 million to Rezko.

November 2005: Rezko lobbies State Department to get a US visa for Auchi.

November 2006: Rezko tells a court he is broke.

April 2007: Auchi’s GMH lends Rezko another $3.5 million.

December 2007: Auchi’s GMH wires another $4 million to Rezko.

Bottom line: Auchi lent $14.5 million in 2005 to Rezko, who somehow manages to go broke by November 2006, after which Auchi lent another $7.5 million to Rezko in 2007.

Question: Why did Auchi throw good money after bad to Rezko, after Rezko had already squandered $14.5 million? What did Rezko do for Auchi for his money? Did he hope to obtain political favors through Rezko’s connection to Obama?

Is anyone asking these questions in the United States, not just in England?

But let’s all trust his judgement that the war in Iraq was wrong.

Soooo, was/is The Obama against the invasion of Iraq on “principle” (can’t keep a straight face on that one) or to protect Rezko’s “power plant” deal with Nadhmi Auchi? “Thick as Thieves,” anyone else curious? What else lurks among those individuals? Maybe nothing. Just curious.

Oh, H*ll, no! Eva Marie is no Saint! When I graduated with my 4-year degree, she was the guest-speaker at the commencement. I had to sit there next to some smarmy gal with a dashiki-style graduation-robe while Ms. Saint spoke about “evil conservatives” who wanted to censor the “cutting-edge” art that was becoming de rigueur in those days (i.e. “Christ Pissed”, Maplethorpe porn, etc.), and had obviously staged questions posed by “members” of the audience about non-caring Republican politicians. I never watched “North by Northwest” voluntarily again…

As for BarackiMichelle Obama, the more she speaks and he refuses to reveal, the more likely he/she will lose. In fact, it’s almost becoming a “his to lose” scenario for Juan De McCaino…

dmh0667 on March 5, 2008 at 5:49 PM

here’s what no one else here will say out loud:

obama – once a muslim.
rezko – Muslim.
auchi – muslim.
and obama’s been close to/in with pro-pali groups since he was a state senator.

if it smells like s*it and looks like sh*t and tastes like shi*, then it’s probably s***.

reliapundit on March 5, 2008 at 6:36 PM

I’m getting a really weird feeling that someone somewhere is attempting to buy our presidency. Either that, or Obama is that guy that enters into terrible financial situations without doing any research…all the while hoping a government program is made to cover the gaps.

blankminde on March 5, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Whitewater II…this time with a Muslim/Middle East twist.

If the GOP is really serious about keeping this type of creep out of office, they’d better do something NOW!

JetBlast on March 6, 2008 at 12:08 AM

ABC News covered this story?? Is that a typo? Hillary’s bounce back and the press room in the john must have hit the MSM hard.

I wonder what would happen if I asked my family for $7500/month to pay my “monthly costs.” Heh.
