Video: The freaky deaky Lufthansa wingstrike clip

We’re going to need some tension-breakers today while we wait to see if Her Majesty pulls through or succumbs to Obama fee-vah. What better way to soothe frayed nerves than with a jumbo jet near-crash?

Yikes! To go through that bump with the ground, and then go back in the air and have to go through another attempt would be more than I could take.

Good God? Truthers on Hot Air?

Can anyone identify the language overheard on this video?

mtngto on March 4, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Got in a hurry. James, check out my 11:53 am post.

Too subtle? (Check out the puppy clip posts.)

James on March 4, 2008 at 3:54 PM

Sorry, didn’t catch the sarcasm/puppy-parallel there. You got me.

That video is a great example of why Boeing put landing gear on the B-52 that aligns with the runway when landing in a crosswind. There is no need to go through risky maneuvers to align the landing gear with the centerline.

Well, they had to compensate for leaving off the ailerons somehow!

I didn’t know they did that. Funny thing is, I’ve seen planes fly over gowing 45 degrees off, but never thought they’d land like that. Always thought they used runways going different directions. Wow.

He definitely did not land into the wind. Maybe he used the wrong runway.

Johan Klaus on March 4, 2008 at 6:13 PM

It sounds like either Danish or Swedish.

Johan Klaus on March 4, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Noone’s posted the video montage of people deliberately landing multiple 747s at rather extreme angles?

Might have to go look it up then, I guess..

Winds can be notoriously unscrupulous about complying with the fixed concrete of a runway. Lots of airfields only have one runway, which limits you to two landing directions. Even two perpendicular runways will still have up to a 45% crosswind potential. The star pattern airfield is a relic of the past, when unlimited funds and land were available. While they do perform a wind survey before they decide what direction the runway should point, the infrequent wind gust can cause a crosswind condition.

Besides, it’s not so much the direction of the wind as the crosswind component of that wind that matters…the force trying to push you off centerline. A wind that’s 90 degrees off center at 5 knots is no big deal…but a 30 degree wind at 40 knots is significant. This is why surface gusts are so bad…it causes an unpredictable change in the forces acting on the aircraft at a critical phase of flight.

Additionally, changing what runway is active at a busy airport is a major undertaking.

We’re just gonna keep tryin’ this here landin’ till I git it riiight.

I see cars doing stuff like that on I-95 every Saturday night!.

HunnyWaggin on March 4, 2008 at 9:43 PM

The max crosswind for this aircraft is 30 kts. The wind was reported 50 with gusts to 100. The approach was far from stable, which is required between the FAF and touchdown or a go around is called for unless in an emergency. They should be fired and had I been on board they would have one big lawsuit coming from me.

Flying home to Detroit once on a beautiful sunny day we were on final approach and less than 100 feet off the deck when the pilot gassed it and went around for a second try. Nobody else seemed to notice because it was done so smoothly, but since the cabin door was open when I was exiting the plane I asked the pilot why he went around again and he said there was a truck on the runway.

rokemronnie on March 5, 2008 at 12:45 AM

I would not want to be on the clean up crew to turn that plane around for its next flight.
