Video: Huckabye

Vintage Huck: Eloquent, peppered with scripture, and replete with a backhanded slap at Romney vis-a-vis what he says about honorable campaigns being the last ones standing. If you can figure out why he’s using an Alamo analogy when he’s gone to such pains to emphasize that he and McCain aren’t enemies, let me know.

In fact, if you can’t spare five minutes, just skip the clip and read this Politico postmortem instead, which begins with an allusion to McCain dropping dead on the stump, ends with a typically paranoid Huck lament about the shadowy Republican establishment that belongs to country clubs and sends its kids to Yale via legacy admissions — and drops this tidbit in between:

While some Huckabee supporters were hoping that he might get a vice presidential nod this year, Huckabee says they should forget it. “We have been given every signal that is not going to be considered,” Huckabee said.

In fact, Huckabee has not been guaranteed even what losing candidates are often guaranteed: a speech at the party’s convention. “It would be amazing if I was disinvited there,” Huckabee said. “If this were the NCAA and the Final Four — two Democrats, two Republicans — I would be in it.”

Nothing left to do but run for Senate. See you on the trail, Huck.

The Mormons in my family told me to support Romney. The Fundys in my family told me to vote Huckabee - in both cases, purely on the basis of their religious convictions.

I voted for McCain today. He is the candidate that I will back for president.

I doubt he runs for Senate, at least this year. If he did decide on the Senate route, I think he’d be more likely to run against Blanche Lincoln in 2010.

[Pryor is more moderate and well-liked than Lincoln. She's seen as vulnerable because in 2004, she spent $6.5 mil to her opponents' $100K and he got 44%.]

Last I checked Huck won Arkansas.

Huck won the GOP vote in Arkansas. He might be a shoo-in for the GOP nomination for senate, but does that inevitably translate to a November victory? Hard to say.

If he wanted to run for Senate in Arkansas, more power to him. Just keep him away from the White House.

darclon on March 4, 2008 at 11:15 PM

Huck might have won Arkansas as governor, but as is typical to his style, he left massive damage to the Arkansas GOP in his wake. Not his attitude and his line about “Shi’ite Republicans” trashing conservatives critical of his decidedly non-conservative behavior on many issues, particularly fiscal issues, so yes, it is a valid question.

All this blaming Huckabee for Romney and Thompson’s failure to win over voters is ridiculous. Huckabee was CONSTANTLY being slammed by these guys and all conservative talking heads and those two still could not pick off voters - that was their problem not his. People should not get out of political campaigns just a bunch of bloggers think they should. If the opinion of a conservative blogger is all a candidate should look at to justify getting out the darling of many of the contributors to this site (Thompson) never would have run because I think he ran a bad campaign from two months before he announced - to little, to late.
And as for WV which is supposedly the “proof” of this conspiracy - that is just good old fashioned politics, plain and simple if I was running McCain’s campaign there I would have done the same thing - even if I hated the guy I was putting over the top - so long as it was the lesser of my two competitors.

Did Huck actually finish in second place (in popular vote or delegate count)? I thought he was still behind Romney in both categories. Probably one reason why he’s spent more time negative-campaigning Romney than against McCain, even after the former threw in behind Mac.

Staying in longer doesn’t put you second, though Huck seems to be making that case. Huck’s had an extra month all to himself (not counting Ron Paul), and he’s still had trouble scoring.

Truthfully, I’m quite worried for America and all those who think electing these types of folks (McCain, Hillary, et al) into office will keep us safe. It won’t. Everbody hopes for change, but the reality is that the ones promising change are politicians who have been in power for the last 15-25 years and haven’t changed a thing. We’re in trouble. And the rest of the world recognizes our weakness. If anything, I’m crushed because of this.

My bet is that many of those who voted for Huckabee on the pro-life issue would have jumped to McCain anyway because of Thompson (accused not substantiated) and Romeny’s wishy-washy abortion stances.

Spoken like a true Huckabee fan. It had to have been a conspiracy of rich trust-fund power suits who have their boot on the neck of the common man.

Huck’s candidacy was based on fostering resentment against “the guy who laid you off.” I don’t care whether it’s about money or religion or anything else - his incessant carping on Romney, even a month after Romney’s exit from the race, was both revealing and nauseating. Huck’s claims to have run with honor and integrity is so much poppycock, and his insistence on saying it and inferring that ONLY he and McCain have done so, is a calculated and malicious insult.

We’re gonna disagree in that I think Huckabee is a true Conservative (not perfect, but a solid conservative) and was the obvious choice to lead Republicans in 2008. Either him, and/or Duncan Hunter, who endorsed Huckabee. People like to ignore that. But, that’s okay. We can agree to disagree. I believe the rights pundits didn’t want a “real” Christian President. Nor did the MSM, obviously. That’s it in a nutshell. Lastly, I think people have to start waking up and hold the media responsible for manipulating information. Once upon a time they kept the Govt. in check for the people, but now have way to much power and are no longer a force for good in this country. End.

apacalyps on March 4, 2008 at 11:52 PM

I am guessing that those concerned with the harsh comments about Huckabee likely include my earlier post in that group.

The man professes to be a Christian, yet launched a number of not-so-veiled attacks on the religion of Mitt Romney. His “I’m not going to run this ad, but I’ll show it to the press anyway” routine was sickening. And he did it all with a twinkle in his eye and his best “aw shucks” trailer park persona. With me, it’s not a “conservative” issue one way or the other. The man is a sleazebag — he can quote all the Scripture he wants — he’s no Christian.

May I please ask you a separate question related to your username?

What value is there in Kent Hovind material?

ColtsFan on March 5, 2008 at 12:18 AM

The man (Huckabee) is a sleazebag — he can quote all the Scripture he wants — he’s no Christian.

D2Boston on March 4, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Still hating a fellow American who loves this country, huh? Oh, yeah, are you a Christian, and if not, do you know what makes a person a Christian to say Huckabee is not? I’m just askin cuz you say Mike is “no Christian”. Thanks.

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:21 AM

I should add that I hope some people get banned for some of the comments that have been slipping by lately in this thread and others. It’s becoming a little too much like Huff-Po, Daily Kos or Fark in here lately.

I realize it’s a big job to police the comments but just…dang.

Benaiah on March 4, 2008 at 11:56 PM

People can strongly disagree, but you’re right. Some of the comments by the Huck haters (Christian haters?) are outrageous.

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:26 AM

Mitt will probably never make it to POTUS because people like Schmuck and his bigoted minions make a minority but a significant minority of the republican party.

Schmuck will also never make it because he mainly draws on the dumb republicans which dont make a majority.

However, Mitt will be remembered as the guy who made himself a billionare, created tons of jobs, raised a righteous and beautiful family, did a great job saving the olympics, was a great governor, and was an outstanding, highly-intelligent class act.

Schmuck will be remembered as a silly con man who appealed to the lowest base of the republican party and was elected where only a guy like him COULD be elected governor…Arkansas. A bigot who couldnt tell the truth. A fraud who raised fat kids that enjoyed torturing animals.

If there is a heaven, we will see Mitt there.

Hope you like hot weather…Schmuck.

Good one.

-apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:07 AM

Well, I did notice that Huck had a better backdrop than McCain for his speech. Like a giant patriotic plasma. Very cool.

D2Boston should apologize for questioning whether your candidate is really a Christian.

After all, only a low-down scumsucking bottom feeder would accuse a Republican presidential candidate who says he’s a Christian of not being one.

I mean, what kind of hateful, goat-fondling, Jesus-hating creep would say that a self-professed Christian GOP candidate isn’t really a Christian? What a terrible thing to say. Mike Huckabee doesn’t deserve that.

D2Boston must be one of those unchristian Mormonites. I hear they think Jesus and the Devil are brothers!

HA HA HA HA!!!

Good post Daryl Herbert.

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:26 AM

I didn’t care for Huckabee from the start because of his record, but this crap from Huckabee supporters that you must be a Christian hater was even more upsetting than his record.

What’s it like to be a perfect Christian?

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:43 AM

For purposes of clarity, I am not trying to be difficult or trying to start a fight with you or being contentious. I am only curious in how you would answer my earlier question I raised.

But to answer your question, I will ask:

How are you defining evolution?

Your answer will then elicit my response.

Thank you.

daryl_herbert on March 5, 2008 at 12:36 AM

Are you referring to Romney?

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:48 AM

Vintage Huck: Eloquent, peppered with scripture, and replete with a backhanded slap at Romney vis-a-vis what he says about honorable campaigns being the last ones standing.

Was that really necessary Huck?

I mean, honestly now……….

We get it. You don’t like the guy.

You were 100% successful in your role of stopping Romney (not that I’m assuming McCain wouldn’t have won without Huck) and handing the nomination to McCain.

Have trouble letting go much?

It’s dead, Jim. Romney’s campaign was dead weeks ago.

And with that final “jerk” moment out of Huck, I can’t say I’m going to miss him all that much.

Read some of the comments, buddy. Substituted the word “Mormon” everytime the term “Christian” is used here in a derogatory way, and then see who’s hating who.

What’s it like to be a perfect Christian?

I don’t know. I’m certainly not.

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:52 AM

Good Job Huckabee.. I will keep my promise..

Go Rudy!
Go Fred!
Go Mike!
Go Mitt!
GO John McCain!

As is taught in the school textbooks. The long ago and far away there was a big bang which exploded and produced everything theory. The mainstream evolution theory. But, it doesn’t matter. It could be the Gap theory or the Day Age theory… which one do you subscribe to?

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:58 AM

Thats one heck of a team that we have assembled.

I’m certainly not your “buddy”, and am not a Mormon injecting religion into why I opposed Huckabee, yet you persist in saying those opposed to Huckabee are “Christian haters”.

I opposed him because of his record.

Since you admit you are not the perfect Christian, what gives you the right to judge others as to whether they are Christian haters, or have any other religious perspective for that matter?

91Veteran on March 5, 2008 at 1:02 AM

Sounds like Huckleberry could use a little pick-me-up. How about an honorable glass of Metamucil? Just the thing to wash down that popcorn squirrel he’s got going out back. I bet he’s already booked for Joe Scarborough tomorrow so Huckleberry can throw out some new one-liners for Joe and his three viewers.

Good Bye and Good Riddence Huckleberry. If we don’t see you on the national scene again, you won’t be missed.

apacalyps on March 5, 2008 at 12:58 AM

Thank you for your response.

Here is my motivation for my earlier question.

1.) First, I am not a believer in “evolution” (a controversial term that has tons of different meanings) for reasons that will become clearer later.
2.) For purposes of clarity, I am not even a “theistic evolutionist”.

My earlier question was:

What value is there in Kent Hovind material?

ColtsFan on March 5, 2008 at 12:18 AM

May I assume that you are not familiar with the ethical problems facing Kent Hovind? Not to mention the lack of intellectual credibility to his views.

My purpose is to encourage you to look at different Apologetical angles that are available to us as believers in Jesus Christ?

91Veteran on March 5, 2008 at 1:02 AM

I’ll second that. I am a born-again Christian. I found Huckleberry’s record uninspiring and unappealing. I found his smarmy manner and his unprovoked attacks on Fred! and the other candidates distasteful.

I also found his overt scripture quotes unappealing. We are voting for a President and Commander in Chief, not a Preacher in Chief. We tried that with Jimmah and see how well it worked. I want my leaders to be devout Christians and have their faith guide their decisions. But I also want them to realize that they are in a secular position, not a pulpit.

Mallard T. Drake on March 5, 2008 at 1:13 AM

I’m certainly not your “buddy”,

You think I meant that literally?

You persist in saying those opposed to Huckabee are “Christian haters”. I opposed him because of his record.

I’m saying “some” of the vitriol towards Huckabee is because he is a Christian. Make the distinction. I’m not saying all people.

Since you admit you are not the perfect Christian, what gives you the right to judge others as to whether they are Christian haters, or have any other religious perspective for that matter? 91Veteran on March 5, 2008 at 1:02 AM

Sigh.
