Rumor: Rove wants Romney on the ticket

posted at 11:55 am on March 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

Says Novak, who also claims to have heard from Romney’s people that McCain promised Charlie Crist the VP nod in return for his endorsement in Florida:

A footnote: Karl Rove and other prominent Republicans are talking up a McCain-Romney harmony ticket despite personal dislike between the two presidential candidates. Romney also would have to overcome opposition to him going on the ticket by his closest advisers.

We’ve been down this road before vis-a-vis Coulter but since we’ve got some new readers via Captain Ed, let’s run through it again. Romney might bite at the offer since it’s the best leg up he could have on Huckabee, Jindal, Sanford, Pawlenty or whoever else is coming down the pike in 2012/2016, but what does he do for McCain? There’s no shortage of southern evangelical (read: *wince* non-Mormon) social cons around to help him shore up the base, none of whom come with the baggage of nasty exchanges with McCain at the debates and in ads. The only potential advantage he brings is money, which is no small thing when the GOP is taking a hellacious beating on fundraising, but Mitt’s not going to bankrupt himself to make Maverick president and his campaign fundraising wasn’t so prolific as to put him anywhere near the class of Hillary or Obama. He’s not going to deliver any northeastern states to McCain either. So what’s the angle here? Appeasing talk radio by putting a guy on the ticket whom none of them were especially passionate about until he became the only alternative to McCain?

Here’s a better question. Strictly from an electoral standpoint (i.e. not in terms of your own policy preferences), why is Romney a better pick than Huckabee? Silver tongue, tireless campaigner, social con cred, and just enough (shudder) economic populism to maybe steal a few undecideds from the Democrats in the center. I’m not asking if he’s the ideal pick, mind you, just why he’d earn fewer voters than Romney would on the ticket.

Romney might not get those Southern Baptists, but he would bring Michigan, most likely Ohio and Pennsylvania too. These are states that need help economically and Romney is the only candidate so far that has that base fully covered and can speak to their needs as well as present solutions too. He would also put New England in play and all the Rocky Mountain states and make a pretty good dent in Calif. in tandem with McCain. And, between McCain and Romney, Florida would be theirs as well.

We would all do well to remember that by November, Obama is not going to be wearing the messiah halo he is enjoying now. A whole bunch of his supporters are in for a rude awakening when they find out that those huge throngs of swooners still only represent about 35% of the electorate. And if it is Hillary, then I don’t think it will matter who McCain puts on the ticket. There is no way those Southerners, even the So. Baptists who hate Mormons, are going to vote for Hillary.

only because Huck was splitting the conservative vote with Romney. Head to head, between Huck and Romney, or Romney and McCain, Romney would of won…but against both he couldn’t do it.
McCain will lose to Obama because he has yet to capture the conservative vote…instead he still sending out cronies to tell us to shut-up and be mind numb robots and vote for the anointed one ( hmm could the chosen one be mcCain himself? It makes sense )

Conservative Voice on March 3, 2008 at 1:58 PM

From this I gather your biggest problem with Romney is his money, sad…you are in the wrong party.

Conservative Voice on March 3, 2008 at 1:45 PM

It can be a disadvantage if you are running against a populist like Obama. Bush 41’s supermarket scanner incident hurt him in his reelection bid. Mitt’s comment about his son’s serving the country by campaigning for him seemed similarly out-of-touch when other father’s have sons in harm’s way serving the country.

I’m all in favor of a CEO President and think Mitt is a really smart guy. With the current economy though his wealth might be fodder for the Democrats.

dedalus on March 3, 2008 at 1:58 PM

When Romney dropped out I thought he would end up VP. Now I am not so sure. I think it would be better for Romney to wait for another run at the big prize. Also I am not sure where he would help McCain in the general. I do not know much about Crist, but if he can assure a Florida win, he would be helpful. I am a big fan of Steele, but like Romney, I would rather see him run for the top office down the road.

That’s just stupid. John McCain got caught taking hundreds of thousands of dollars for influence peddling in the Keating Five scandal and was rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee, yet you seem to have more problems with the fact that a Mormon has money that he earned in private industry.

highhopes on March 3, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Why Romney? A few reasons.

This country is headed for an economic mess -or so we are being told.

Romney is the “economics” guy. Economics is the area in which McCain has blatantly stated he has no knowledge. Compared to anyone on the ticket- both sides of the isle- he is the ONLY one with this knowledge and we need it.

Romney also had the strong support of conservative talk radio. You get Romney on the ticket- you may well appease that group - and maybe there can be some unity and support.

As for Huckabee - the guy is just an embarrassment in every sense of the word. There is no nice way to say this but being from the south I am gonna say it- I look at Huckabee and his wife and I see them sitting comfortably in their double- wide trailer sitting next to the Governor’s mansion.

I can also see them sitting in the Queens palace having tea and asking something like “so, how much did this place cost ya?” LOL.

He needs to disappear. Go back to the speech junket. Certainly his time has garnered an increase in his speaking fees to such a degree he can move on and live a wonderfully comfortable wealthy lifestyle.

Where shall we start on McAArps qualifications? Should we mention how Johnny Boy cheated on his wife to marry gazillionairre Cindy?

Shall we bring up how little Cindy has an addiction problem?

Shall we dwell on McAArp’s physical limitations that have previously thrown other candidates out because their candidacy seemed too “risky”? (i.e., CANCER)

Your Grampaw candidate has a few apparent “negatives” of his own, not the least of which is that he is TOO DAMMMMM OLD to run for President. (given family history of his father dying at age 70 and his grandfather dying at age 62)

A man who said that he want to be more pro-gay marriage than Ted Kennedy and that just recently he converted to pro-life, cannot be trusted with the second highest office in the land. It’s not his positions that offend me, it’s that they are new. Your a very successful grown man, and all of a sudden because your in a political race you flip flop? C’mon, Mitt shouldn’t even be allowed in the White House, much less VP. Maverick’s positions may irk some of you, but damn’t he’s no phony.

I disagree. The only difference between Romney’s wealth and Obama’s is the actual amount. Obama is a very wealthy man. He is a multi-millionaire.

How fun it would be to point that out on every occasion and let the socialist Obama who wants to take from everyone tell everyone who he took his from or who he is going to give his too.

In the meantime you have Mitt on the otherside telling everyone what they can do in an effort to join the millionaire clue - AND tell how he will fix the economy so that will be possible.

4.) Obama’s got charisma (and Oprah).
5.) Obama’s raised more money.
6.) The economy is limping into a recession.

Blatant misrepresentation. Roger, you really aren’t being a very good example.

I think most Hot Air readers would agree that your saying “you are going to burn in hell…along with Huckabee and Stalin” sounds more like something Osama Bin Laden would say.

Red Pill on March 3, 2008 at 2:12 PM

I scrolled too quickly and lost the comment for quoting, but someone said that it was the conservative base that elected McCain and rejected Romney. Phooey! The conservative base voted for Huckabee and that base was REJECTED by all the rest of the party voters. This idea that “conservative” is like some kind of religion is what is doing the conservative wing of the Republican party in and fast making them irrelevant. I was a strong Romney supporter who will vote for McCain because the idea of putting a democrat in the presidency makes me quake to my bones. I do not consider myself a conservative, but a moderate who leans libertarian/conservative. I don’t like this idea of the “pure conservative” or the “true conservative,” both of which smack of bigotry. Do you all hear yourselves when you talk about Romney being a recent conservative convert? Do you know how dumb that sounds when Mormons as a group are probably the most conservative in the country. What you really mean is that you don’t want any pragmatic conservatives, ones who would use common sense when common sense is called for rather than someone who is arbitrary about being a purist.

Pal2Pal on March 3, 2008 at 2:12 PM

I disagree. The only difference between Romney’s wealth and Obama’s is the actual amount. Obama is a very wealthy man. He is a multi-millionaire.

The only difference between our wealth and Warren Buffett’s is the actual amount too. In the case of Obama and Mitt I think Mitt might have a 100x the wealth that Obama has. More significant though, was the wealth their families had when they were growing up and what each man chose to do when finishing graduate school at Harvard. Mitt worked for Bain Capital and eventually created an LBO shop while Obama turned down bigger salaries at NY law firms to focus on community work.

I like Mitt’s resume better, but get the feeling that I’d be in the minority of voters in November.
They both have greater wealth than the average voter, but there are tangible differences between the two.

dedalus on March 3, 2008 at 2:16 PM

dedalus on March 3, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Elections (sadly) are identity game, which makes Romney irrelevant even if he is more qualified and more liked by the base. Huckabee will be a good purchase inside Bible belt, and he’s good with women too - but he will have a negative cost that will outweight the positives, because he was presented as crazy religious fanatic by the fearmongers. So i guess none of them will be good.

I think McCain needs a woman on the ticket, (who’s NOT creepy Condie). How about Michelle Malkin?

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 3, 2008 at 2:23 PM

I think you mean “Amish” conservative, not aumish conservative by which, of course, you mean anybody who doesn’t agree with Triceratops left-of-center views.

Beyond that, you equate being rude, disloyal, and treasonous with truth-telling. Put another way, it isn’t just McCain’s desire to grant no-questions-asked amnesty to millions but also his calling me racist and unpatriotic for opposing his no-questions-asked amnesty for millions. It doesn’t make me “wrong” on the issue of immigration reform and it doesn’t make Tricepratops “right” just because the man is a lying SOB who is rude to those who don’t share his views.

McCain doesn’t share common ground with conservatives. He constantly tells us to f**k off when we object to his liberal dogma. Yet he expects us to vote for him? Maybe you are right. Maybe conservatives should not vote in the Presidential race and see how many of you “common sense moderates” are really behind Triceratops when it matters.

Roger Waters on March 3, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Mitt Romney’s father didn’t even have a college degree and he worked his way up through the auto industry to eventually head American Motors before turning to politics. No silver spoons there. Mitt left college to serve a two year mission and believe me, Mormon missionaries live a very stark existence with few amenities allowed to them, especially back in the late sixties. He then returned to college and worked hard and was the Valedictorian of his class. He went on to Harvard and earned simultaneous degrees with an MBA and JD, graduating with honors. Not surprising since he also scored a perfect score on his SATs. And he did all that and still managed to support a wife and 3 babies. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Ann still bakes her own bread, most Mormons do. And as far as community is concerned, Mormons take care of their own and are very active in communities where they live and they raise their children to do their part too.

Will you just shut the hell up already?

DENNIS: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

ARTHUR: Be quiet!

DENNIS: Well, but you can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

ARTHUR: Shut up!

DENNIS: I mean, if I went ’round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!

ARTHUR: Shut up, will you? Shut up!

DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.

ARTHUR: Shut up!

DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I’m being repressed!

Rove may have the Midas Touch…but I would be VERY disappointed if Mitt came on board the ticket.

Still saying…Gov. Crist would be the best I’ve seen so far.

I totally agree with you about Graham. The party is barely holding itself together with Johnny Mac. Adding Graham to the mix would be a huge mistake. I feel the same about Huckabee though. McCain needs the independents and I believe Huckabee would drive em away.

McCain is going to lose some group regardless of who he picks so I pray he really thinks it out before he taps someone on the shoulder.

Wrong bro, we took it from you. Us moderates had us a little revolt on your ass. You answer to us now, and you start by calling me Sir CHOSEN ONE.

TCO — McCain supporter or Obamite Moby?

I answered this above:
Conservative Voice on March 3, 2008 at 1:58 PM

And like I said earlier, Romney hasn’t been running for a while, yet creates still creates more buzz than McCain or Huck.

Moderates are selfish finger in the wind, because they don’t stand for anything other than what can you give ME…you may win an election, but it won’t last, because its based on personality versus on principle.

Conservative Voice on March 3, 2008 at 3:31 PM

I’m a proud Republican, but wouldn’t be caught dead calling myself a conservative. It’s dated and boring.

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 3, 2008 at 2:57 PM

I think it’s TRIED AND TRUE. I really think you’d be more comfortable over “there” - along side of John McAArp.

Maybe some of you could join this conversation instead. Let me know how it works out for you.

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 3, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Never said I’d stay home. I’ll write-in or vote the Constitution Party. I would NEVER give up my right to vote.

Just curious, what would you do if Mitt were the nominee?

stenwin77 on March 3, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Newsflash, THE CHOSEN ONE may not even be a Republican at all…

Keep in mind that certain MSM employees clearly read Hot Air. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they also post here.

Trying to convince conservative voters to stay home sounds like something the MSM staff would try to do…

JetBoy on March 3, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Do you live in FLorida? I do, and I think Charlene Crist has really screwed things up here.

stenwin77 on March 3, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Ref your question Allah about why Mitt and not Huck….

Either (in fact any) pick has a downside. Mitt you take a hit from the most evangelical. Huck the independents. Graham the fence crowd. Rudy the 2nd Amendment and abortion crowd. Crist has his own baggage with some (as evidenced in the re-vote thread). I believe he’ll go outside the box. Who, I haven’t the slightest idea, but knowing Johnny Mac it will be traffic magnet for HA.

Limerick on March 3, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Mark Sanford

stenwin, er, not emulating TCO. Called it a nutter a while back.

Also a possible Obamite Moby, like I said above. Some other poster thinks it’s Lindsay Graham, which is amusing and sadly plausible after seeing his meltdown over immigration and his histrionics managing the Clinton impeachment circus in the House way back when.

funky chicken on March 3, 2008 at 3:47 PM

That’s just stupid. John McCain got caught taking hundreds of thousands of dollars for influence peddling in the Keating Five scandal and was rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee, yet you seem to have more problems with the fact that a Mormon has money that he earned in private industry.

Hogwash! John McCain was completely cleared in that matter and did nothing wrong. The Democratic controlled congress just needed a Republican name to mix in with their crooks.

Year after year, moderates like myself have fallen in line with YOUR candidate in fear of losing to the libs. I don’t want to subject you to that awful feeling. Take your ball, go home, and stfu. We’re done with your type.

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 3, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Oh Boo Hoo! You had a moderate that fits your personality in 2004- his name was John Kerry. You also had one in 2000-his name was Al Gore. Not to mention eight years of Bill Clinton. I simply don’t see what you have to complain about- that the GOP isn’t a mindless liberal drone like you?
