New Hillary ad: If Obama’s so worried about Afghanistan, why didn’t he hold hearings on NATO?

As Ben Smith notes, labeling the images of the sleeping children “Obama TV ad” took some cheek given that his ad lifted them from her “Daisy” spot. As Ben Smith doesn’t note, the cop here is entirely fair: Contra Smith, it is in fact “an obvious task” of Obama’s subcommittee to provide oversight on NATO. Quote:

The subcommittee deals with all matters concerning U.S. relations with the countries on the continent of Europe (except the states of Central Asia that are within the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs), and with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Matters relating to Greenland and the northern polar region are also the responsibility of this subcommittee.

This subcommittee’s responsibilities include all matters within the geographic region relating to: (1) terrorism and non-proliferation; (2) crime and illicit narcotics; (3) U.S. foreign assistance programs; and (4) the promotion of U.S. trade and exports.

Exit question: Why would a man who’s made the “good war” in Afghanistan the centerpiece of his foreign policy platform, who complained on national television not 10 days ago about troops in the field there possibly having to scrounge for weapons, not want to huddle with NATO at some point?

Anyone surprised by this? I’m having trouble drumming up any interest in this election. I am far from convinced that McCain will be any better than either of these two and certainly there’s not much difference between them.

samuelrylander on March 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM

what a royal mess: hitlary actually looking presidential.

jimmer on March 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM

How close are these two in delegates so far anyway? I keep seeing different numbers. Super Delegates excluded.

Dash on March 3, 2008 at 12:56 PM

Allah- I’ve been looking for evidence that Obama thought the Afghan war was “the good war” before it happened, or before Iraq happened.

Obama was too busy working out his awesomeness so he could unleash it on his presidency where he would fulfill all our hopes and dreams.

Personally speaking, I would personally, extremely, really very very much like to see both Shillary and B.O. just go away. I am now sick of both of them.

Whenever I see Obama I think he should always be accompanied by the following them music…

Who can turn the world on with her his smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it’s you girl guy, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don’t you take it
You’re gonna make it after all
You’re gonna make it after all

For all those who might say Afghanistan is the “real war” and that’s where we should be, I ask, What is the difference between an Islamic Fascist in Iraq and an Islmic Fascist in Afghanistan? The answer: NOTHING

Bam’s gained a lot of power by accomplishing absolutely squat.

If he actually went to work and did his job …

Well .. that’d just be stupid.

yo on March 3, 2008 at 1:03 PM

I thought Obama left a great opening for Hillary to strike when he admitted not holding any hearings because he was too busy campaigning.

For some reason, “the smartest woman in the world” wasn’t smart enough to strike.

This ad is too little, too late. She had a perfect opportunity to expose the fraud that is B. Hussein Obama, and she blew it.

Tomorrow, she’ll be finished.

bigred on March 3, 2008 at 1:03 PM

I’m not sure about that one. We will see tomorrow.

Let me add something

Obama was too busy working out his awesomeness so he could unleash it on his presidency where he would fulfill all our hopes and dreams because he is the one we’ve been waiting for.

ninjapirate on March 3, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Is this really happening? Is Hillary making Obama look ever weaker? Will she get the Florida delegates back? Will it go down to the convention and a smoke filled room of superdelegates and a “secret ballot” to pick the nominee? We can only hope.

No matter who wins a large chunk of their factions is going to be extremely jaded… Live by identity politics die by identity politics.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Obama says Sermon on Mount Justifies Same-Sex Unions

“If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans.”

Key here is that ALL the major candidates have the same type of flaw.

They are ALL already in the correct job implement the vast majority of their agenda… and yet… have not done a thing about them…

Taxes? Economy? Military Spending? War Powers? Immigration policy? Waste? They are all part of the problem, and have not put forward solutions.

Most of these things can’t even be effectivly addressed by the President… only thing He/She can do is sign off on them AFTER they pass Congress… you know, the job they are already in?

Why give FAILURES who can’t do the job they now have, a promotion?

Romeo13 on March 3, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Silly mortals, Obama has no need for what you earthlings call “hearings”, he merely has to make his will known via telepathy and all knees will bend.

Watch him pull this rabbit out of his hat . . .

NoDonkey on March 3, 2008 at 1:12 PM

This subcommittee’s responsibilities include all matters within the geographic region relating to: (1) terrorism and non-proliferation; (2) crime and illicit narcotics; (3) U.S. foreign assistance programs; and (4) the promotion of U.S. trade and exports.

Now besides the question of whether any of you actually believe him holding such a subcommittee would actually accomplish anything, it doesn’t seem to me like it’s in his jurisdiction to use hearings to ask these countries for military support in Afghanistan. I’m a laymen though so if I’m wrong, what’s the angle he could use to justify such a hearing?

Typhonsentra on March 3, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Obama can only manage one project at a time?

Doesn’t the president have to be a multitasker? Can’t he delegate responsibility to others? Or is he lying through his teeth about anything concerning national security and international relations.

The young man doesn’t seem to have enough experience to manage his responsibilities while at the same time looking forward toward the consequences of inaction.

ON ANOTHER FRONT…..

If I was Obama, I’d be on the phone right now with Sean Penn asking him to make a trip to Venezuela to diffuse Chavez regarding Columbia.

That would prove once and for all that Obama is in the game and ready to act at a moments notice.

winemkr on March 3, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Hillary is now trying to portray Barack Obama as Urkel. That shows you how pathetic Hillary Clinton truly is.

Larraby on March 3, 2008 at 1:29 PM

Hit him with the kichen sink, you Ice Queen!

wildweasel on March 3, 2008 at 1:29 PM

How bad is Hillary’s campaign? This is an issue they should have discovered weeks ago and been pounding Obama with, especially in those red states. It’s Opposition Research 101. Not only is he a rookie Senator, he isn’t even doing his job in the Senate. Nobody can plausibly claim Hillary has not worked hard in the Senate.

One of many reasons I am dying for the Dems to run off the cliff with Obama.

rockmom on March 3, 2008 at 1:35 PM

You guys keep playing into these liberals hands. We are not fighting separate wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as they keep saying and I see from the responses above you keep agreeing with.
There is only one war, the war on terror. It may have two major theatres of operation, but they certianly are not the only ones.

paulsur on March 3, 2008 at 1:37 PM

I wish someone would write a new story about Bill Ayers. We need to get everything out there today.

Don’t worry. Michelle O. will deal with NATO and Afghanistan.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on March 3, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Uh oh….

The final Public Policy Polling survey in Texas shows Sen. Hillary Clinton taking a six point lead over Sen. Barack Obama, 50% to 44%.

Key finding: “The Hispanic vote saved Hillary Clinton in California, and now it looks like it might do the same in Texas. She is getting almost as much of the Hispanic vote as Obama is of the black vote and that’s propelled her to the lead in the state.”

ArmyAunt on March 3, 2008 at 1:47 PM

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

The longer those two have to duke it out, the better it is for McCain!!

ArmyAunt on March 3, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Anyone surprised by this? I’m having trouble drumming up any interest in this election. I am far from convinced that McCain will be any better than either of these two and certainly there’s not much difference between them.

samuelrylander on March 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM

For all McCain’s faults, it’s ridiculous to say that there isn’t much difference between them. Not wanting to vote for McCain as the “lesser of two evils” is perfectly legitimate, but let’s not pretend that he’d be as bad as Hillary or Obama on spending, judicial appointments, taxes or military action.

Hollowpoint on March 3, 2008 at 1:56 PM

Since Bush’s “stealing” of the election in 2000 was what created the nutroot/code pink types in the first place, I wonder what that crowd would do if Hillary “stole” the primary from Obama.

Hmmm, I’m salivating and I don’t know why.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on March 3, 2008 at 1:41 PM

She couldn’t be prouder of them.

Kafir on March 3, 2008 at 2:05 PM

I thought that Obama was concentrating on invasion plans involving Pakistan? As the “Commander-of-Chief,” he hardly has the time to concern himself with NATO.

OhEssYouCowboys on March 3, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Why didn’t Obamamessiah simply call a meeting and send one of his empty suits as chairman…err chairperson…err chairmessiah?

Can you picture it? A long table with men and women seated all around it, looking at the head of the table where an empty suit stands–draped on a hangar supported on a wheeled rack?

The perfect Obama-as-President picture.

Montana on March 3, 2008 at 3:34 PM

thats fine, but what committee(s) is Hilary neglecting in her run for President? Or McCain for that matter? They should have to give up their seats, especially chairmanships, on committees when they commit to running for President.

Martha McCallum just brought this post up (and mentioned Hot Air) on America’s Election HQ.

Naturally Kirsten P pooh-poohed Afghanistan away as not being important in the average American’s mind.

Hey Kirsten! It’s Obama’s biggest street cred/WOT talking points isn’t it?!
