Re. Rather; I wonder that Chris Mathews still features Rather as a member of his panel on "Hardball". One would think that Rather, a journalist shown to be lacking in the most basic journalistic ethics, would be the last person to have on a "hardball" panel (unless "hardball" is not supposed to refer to "the truth, no matter where the truth leads us").

Maybe Chris M. owes Rather for something in the past or is just a friend, throwing Rather a bone.

Does this not ring of Rathergate? which was ANOTHER CBS slander. Of course, Siegelman CANNOT be guilty of bribery as he was convicted, it's all a Karl Rove plot!! uh huh, RIGHT!!!

As former CBS reporter And author of the great MSM expose book, BIAS, Bernie Goldberg would say: Yes, CBS IS biased to the left, but they are so ignorant they don't realize it... yeah, RIGHT!!

Yes, I'm sure the other patients at DU are having a wonderful time with all this. But do you think you could give us the condensed version, maybe? This is'nt the first time CBS has screwed the pooch, (unless you're one to believe the TANG memos were legit.....ummm...do you?).

People understand "forged memo used to indict the current president during his campaign for reelection". "Crazy woman making up stories about a former presidential advisor when said president is not running for anything" isn't quite as compelling. Based on that, I doubt this story gets a fraction of the traction (poetry alert!) that Memogate got, or that CBS is held to account for it as they were for that fiasco. Correct me if I'm wrong. It would be fun if I was.

It is a shame that CBS continues to squander their brand after such an opportunity for introspection.

It is not so much a rebuttal as frustration of idiocy

And yet, you can't quite bring yourself to expand on this idiocy....that you alone can see.

CBS realized the problem with their TANG story was that the evidence they offered was quickly debunked. They learned their lesson, like any smart organization, and this time simply offered no proof whatsoever.

You are right, daileyck1, that your comment was not a rebuttal.

And yes, we are frustrated with idiocy. That of CBS' idiocy and malignity. But your contribution is unimpressive.

This CBS story is missing an important element: it doesn't include hiring actors to stage an Islamophobia event at a NASCAR race that "Karl" attended in a "Red State". The 60 Minutes crew must be slacking off a little. Were they impacted by the Hollywood writers' strike?

The more they air this tripe the more it sticks. This consistent conspiratorial drone becomes conventional wisdom. The conventional wisdom then gets re-written into curriculum. The curriculum then is accepted as fact. Media elites wind up controlling history through monopolizing the dissemination of language. I agree with Bigred, they do get caught sometimes (memogate, etc.) but that's because they jumped the gun too quickly. When they're pressed for time, it's harder to build "facts" or "evidence." When they have a lot of time, the constant droning makes up for lack of evidence.

The worst part is, there will never been any retribution for CBS airing this ridiculous story.

There will be no apology. There will be no follow-up by the MSM other than FOX.

And the nonsense will continue.

It is just further proof that you can run an untrue, slanderous story about any Republican and get away with it.

Memogate was the rare exception.

How can we really settle this? I know, have a trial with evidence and stuff. Have these guys called Lawyers try to persuade a group of citizens called Jurors. Finally, after it's all over have let these jurors who have listened to the evidence and stuff return a decision called a verdict.

I must have missed the original report on this, as well as the earlier RatherGate scandal. Probably because I have not paid any attention to the so-called "mainstream media" in over twenty-five years.

As an Air Force veteran, I grew tired of references to Lockheed C-141 Starlifter transports as "bombers", Spruance-class destroyers as "battleships" and .50-cal machineguns as "cannon". If the MSM couldn't pick up a Jane's, call a local recruiter or even spend two minutes on the then-nascent Web to get these simple facts correct, how could I trust them on more esoteric subjects like economics, politics and foreign policy?

So I turned off my TV and let lapse my subscriptions to Time, Newsweek and U. S. News and World Report, as well as my local newspaper. Since then, I have gotten all my news from the Web, courtesy of our fair hostess Michelle, Charles Johnston over at LGF, the PowerLine guys and others.

As far as I am concerned, the MSM has become a nightmare combination of National Enquirer and the Democratic Party publicity office.

It is hard to believe that the National Enquirer has become the standard bearer for news organizations and the New York Times and CBS have to desperately strive to keep up with them. The truth to a liberal is not whether something is true or not, but what you wish the truth to be.

How this relates to the 2008 voting cycle is quite flimsy. CBS must enjoy losing credibility and advertising.

Since this is a discussion on crazy conspiracies, I blame this on Andy Rooney—this has fossilized cook/nutjob written all over it.

That's what I'm trying to figure out - they must truly believe Rove/Bush will play a big part in the 08 election. Either that, or this is payback to Bushco for the TANG fiasco, and they think it will somehow spill over to McCain and the Repubs. Anyway you look at it, it's going to blow up in their face...again.

Can't wait to see who they'll fire this time.

With National Enquirer leaking Clinton's it's-not-sexcapade and CBS repeatedly releasing nut-job rantings, have the two organizations officially switched mission statements? My favorite issue with this story is relevance. CBS goes after a 2002 Alabama-gubernatorial election and Karl Rove's supposed influence. Didn't they get the memo that the puppetmaster is now working Newsweek and guest spots on Fox? How this relates to the 2008 voting cycle is quite flimsy. CBS must enjoy losing credibility and advertising.
