Power Line on CBS’ case … again

I have not paid much attention to the 60 Minutes segment on the supposed plot by Karl Rove to take down Don Siegelman, mostly because I consider CBS News the New York Times of broadcast news. They have so little credibility any more that their claims of plots and conspiracies do little to move the needle. However, John Hinderaker at Power Line still pays attention to 60 Minutes, almost four years after his partner Scott Johnson helped expose their George Bush-TANG fraud that attempted to hijack a presidential election.
John takes an in-depth look at the 60 Minutes story, especially its prime source, Jill Simpson. Like Bill Burkett, she has a strange history and changing stories:
The centerpiece of Simpson’s account, as presented on 60 Minutes, was her claim that she did “opposition research” for the Republican Party in Alabama at the request of Karl Rove. She said that in 2001, while Siegelman was still governor, Rove asked her to follow Siegelman around and try to get photos of the Governor in bed (“in a compromising sexual position”) with one of his female aides. Not only that: Simpson said that this request by Rove didn’t surprise her, because Rove had asked her to carry out other secret missions in the past.
Put aside for a moment the inherent stupidity of this account. CBS aired it without disclosing the fact that Simpson has told her story several times before–without mentioning that she had ever met or spoken to Karl Rove, let alone that he asked her to spy for him.
Simpson first came to public attention last summer, when she signed an affidavit about a conversation that she allegedly had with Rob Riley, son of soon-to-be Republican Governor Bob Riley and several others, in November 2002. The affidavit, 22 paragraphs long, purported to set out Simpson’s recollection of a phone conversation that was then five years in the past. It says that “Karl” was mentioned in the phone conversation, and she understood “Karl” to be Karl Rove. The affidavit does not say that Simpson had ever met Rove, spoken with Rove, or been asked by him to spy on Governor Siegelman.
John has much more on Simpson, which proves that CBS had much, much less reason to run this story. Maybe CBS would do better to hire Power Line as their executive editors, because as John shows, no one at the network seems willing to perform that function in any meaningful manner any more. Be sure to read the whole post.

This can be said of most of the msm yet there apparently is nothing the American people can do about it. When faced with these flagrant lies the news outlets say “Oops”. cbs was trying to get rid of rather anyway so his situation really shouldn’t be counted as self policing.
People should be really scared about this in light of pelosis attempt to use the justice department to go after White House aids. Mukasey may have told her to get lost but will attorney general chuck schumer do the same?

Has the affidavit been made public yet?

For CBS and the far left “journalist” that infest that organization, this is par for the course. As Rush says, drive by media.

When Karl Rove was first told of these “charges”, I have no doubt his response was “Don who?”
If Rove had as much power as he’s been given credit for, he would have just twitched his nose and sent Siegelman (and Simpson) to the cornfield.

It’s a ring-a-ding world when both science(weather story), and the media are out to produce evidence contrary to, or sans reality. What we are faced with appears to be a repeat of the pre-enlightenment period of believing in what one wishes to be true and fill in the data after the event, or to follow what was once ecclesiastical reality based on bad scientific method in order to produce results, which is now substituted with liberal bias reality syndrome.
Hence:
The name “Satan” always means the devil, and anyone named “Karl” is Rove, hence the devil. Now let’s see if he floats or sinks in the pond.

Bravo “Powerline”.
CBS was flushed down the same toilet as Rather but incredibly, they just keep on lying.

From The “Tiffany Network” to running crap that the National Enquirer would laugh at….
It’s like watching TV designed for Gore Vidal, by Gore Vidal.

Don Hewett and other managers, editors etc will never change at CBS. Make the Repubicans look bad at every opportunity is the way they think.

I’ve not watched any cbs “news” show in over five years. I do not watch 60 minutes, the morning show, that news reader woman, any of the Sunday stuff, nothing…
Clearly, I made the right choice. I’ll continue getting my gossip from the intrawebs… it’s safer and more reliable.

You couldn’t be further from the truth. Educated resourceful propagandists is more accurate. There is nothing lazy about the effort utilized and journalists report the facts. This is something CBS hasn’t been accused of in a long time.

Bravo, John!
Exposing MSM’s deceitfulness and distortions is our only hope of reigning it in.
Just another reason to guard with our lives our freedom of expression over the internet and talk radio.

Call me naive, but how exactly was this most unattractive woman supposed to get pictures of Siegelman and a female aide in compromising sexual positions?
Was she supposed to entice them into a menage a trois? Hide under the bed?

When the Clintons’ big advisor guru was sucking the toes of prostitutes, did CBS pay any attention to that?
jgapinoy on March 2, 2008 at 9:32 AM
Well. This one seems to have unraveled even quicker than Dan Rather’s Memo-Palooza. He didn’t even get a chance to harangue his detractors with his ‘unimpeachable sources’ lecture. Does anyone know if CBS has started barricading themselves with the expected defenses of their story yet?
DngrMse on March 2, 2008 at 9:36 AM
CBS is a three ring circus of desperate, partisan political propaganda. All this story needs is an orange wig and a big red nose.
Roy Rogers on March 2, 2008 at 9:37 AM
With National Enquirer leaking Clinton’s it’s-not-sexcapade and CBS repeatedly releasing nut-job rantings, have the two organizations officially switched mission statements? My favorite issue with this story is relevance. CBS goes after a 2002 Alabama-gubernatorial election and Karl Rove’s supposed influence. Didn’t they get the memo that the puppetmaster is now working Newsweek and guest spots on Fox? How this relates to the 2008 voting cycle is quite flimsy. CBS must enjoy losing credibility and advertising.
Since this is a discussion on crazy conspiracies, I blame this on Andy Rooney—this has fossilized cook/nutjob written all over it.
Cold Steel on March 2, 2008 at 9:59 AM
That’s what I’m trying to figure out – they must truly believe Rove/Bush will play a big part in the 08 election. Either that, or this is payback to Bushco for the TANG fiasco, and they think it will somehow spill over to McCain and the Repubs. Anyway you look at it, it’s going to blow up in their face…again.
Can’t wait to see who they’ll fire this time.
Rick on March 2, 2008 at 10:48 AM
It is hard to believe that the National Enquirer has become the standard bearer for news organizations and the New York Times and CBS have to desperately strive to keep up with them. The truth to a liberal is not whether something is true or not, but what you wish the truth to be.
volsense on March 2, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I must have missed the original report on this, as well as the earlier RatherGate scandal. Probably because I have not paid any attention to the so-called “mainstream media” in over twenty-five years.
As an Air Force veteran, I grew tired of references to Lockheed C-141 Starlifter transports as “bombers”, Spruance-class destroyers as “battleships” and .50-cal machineguns as “cannon”. If the MSM couldn’t pick up a Jane’s, call a local recruiter or even spend two minutes on the then-nascent Web to get these simple facts correct, how could I trust them on more esoteric subjects like economics, politics and foreign policy?
So I turned off my TV and let lapse my subscriptions to Time, Newsweek and U. S. News and World Report, as well as my local newspaper. Since then, I have gotten all my news from the Web, courtesy of our fair hostess Michelle, Charles Johnston over at LGF, the PowerLine guys and others.
As far as I am concerned, the MSM has become a nightmare combination of National Enquirer and the Democratic Party publicity office.
Rusty Bill on March 2, 2008 at 11:19 AM
How can we really settle this? I know, have a trial with evidence and stuff. Have these guys called Lawyers try to persuade a group of citizens called Jurors. Finally, after it’s all over have let these jurors who have listened to the evidence and stuff return a decision called a verdict.

Does anyone still take this “SHOW” seriously?? I stopped watching this tripe about 15 yrs ago.
pueblo1032 on March 2, 2008 at 11:57 AM
The worst part is, there will never been any retribution for CBS airing this ridiculous story.
There will be no apology. There will be no follow-up by the MSM other than FOX.
And the nonsense will continue.
It is just further proof that you can run an untrue, slanderous story about any Republican and get away with it.
Memogate was the rare exception.

bigred on March 2, 2008 at 12:10 PM
The more they air this tripe the more it sticks. This consistent conspiratorial drone becomes conventional wisdom. The conventional wisdom then gets re-written into curriculum. The curriculum then is accepted as fact. Media elites wind up controlling history through monopolizing the dissemination of language. I agree with Bigred, they do get caught sometimes (memogate, etc.) but that’s because they jumped the gun too quickly. When they’re pressed for time, it’s harder to build “facts” or “evidence.” When they have a lot of time, the constant droning makes up for lack of evidence.
Cold Steel on March 2, 2008 at 12:25 PM
This CBS story is missing an important element: it doesn’t include hiring actors to stage an Islamophobia event at a NASCAR race that “Karl” attended in a “Red State”. The 60 Minutes crew must be slacking off a little. Were they impacted by the Hollywood writers’ strike?

daileyck1 on March 2, 2008 at 2:33 PM
You are right, daileyck1, that your comment was not a rebuttal.
And yes, we are frustrated with idiocy. That of CBS’ idiocy and malignity. But your contribution is unimpressive.
SPQR on March 2, 2008 at 2:39 PM
CBS realized the problem with their TANG story was that the evidence they offered was quickly debunked. They learned their lesson, like any smart organization, and this time simply offered no proof whatsoever.

It is not so much a rebuttal as frustration of idiocy
And yet, you can’t quite bring yourself to expand on this idiocy….that you alone can see.
DngrMse on March 2, 2008 at 2:58 PM
People understand “forged memo used to indict the current president during his campaign for reelection”. “Crazy woman making up stories about a former presidential advisor when said president is not running for anything” isn’t quite as compelling. Based on that, I doubt this story gets a fraction of the traction (poetry alert!) that Memogate got, or that CBS is held to account for it as they were for that fiasco. Correct me if I’m wrong. It would be fun if I was.
It is a shame that CBS continues to squander their brand after such an opportunity for introspection.

As former CBS reporter And author of the great MSM expose book, BIAS, Bernie Goldberg would say: Yes, CBS IS biased to the left, but they are so ignorant they don’t realize it… yeah, RIGHT!!
jimbo2008 on March 2, 2008 at 7:37 PM
Does this not ring of Rathergate? which was ANOTHER CBS slander. Of course, Siegelman CANNOT be guilty of bribery as he was convicted, it’s all a Karl Rove plot!! uh huh, RIGHT!!!
jimbo2008 on March 2, 2008 at 7:42 PM
Re. Rather; I wonder that Chris Mathews still features Rather as a member of his panel on “Hardball”. One would think that Rather, a journalist shown to be lacking in the most basic journalistic ethics, would be the last person to have on a “hardball” panel (unless “hardball” is not supposed to refer to “the truth, no matter where the truth leads us”).
Maybe Chris M. owes Rather for something in the past or is just a friend, throwing Rather a bone.
