Has the media begun to turn on Barack Obama?

Hillary Clinton has complained bitterly that her competitor, Barack Obama, has received a cushy ride so far from the mainstream media. That may be changing, however, with the corruption trial of Obama’s political booster Tony Rezko. The New York Times takes an in-depth look into Rezko’s connections and asks how the Chicago fixer kept finding so much money with so many creditors:
Tony Rezko was obviously in trouble. He was a defendant in at least a dozen lawsuits, federal investigators in Chicago were poking around, and his name was in newspaper articles about corruption and fraud.
None of that stopped Mr. Rezko, a politically connected developer, and Senator Barack Obama from completing real estate deals a few years ago that resulted in the Obamas obtaining their dream house and the Rezkos buying an empty lot next door.
Nearly three years later, fallout from Mr. Obama’s relationship with Mr. Rezko, who raised more than $150,000 for Mr. Obama’s campaigns, continue to dog Mr. Obama on the presidential campaign trail. That distraction promises to linger as Mr. Rezko goes on trial on corruption charges starting Monday.
Mr. Obama, a Democrat, is not part of the case against Mr. Rezko, who is accused of shaking down companies seeking business with the State of Illinois. Mr. Obama has conceded that it was a mistake to bring Mr. Rezko into his personal real estate dealings, although he has insisted that there was nothing unusual about the developer’s decision to buy a sought-after lot in an upscale neighborhood.
But a review of court records, including new details of Mr. Rezko’s finances that emerged recently, show that the lot purchase occurred as he was being pursued by creditors seeking more than $10 million, deepening the mystery of why he would plunge into a real estate investment whose biggest beneficiary appears to have been Mr. Obama.
The Times develops the connection further between the Rezkos and the Obamas on the purchase of the house and lot that put them in business together. They report that Barack Obama could not have purchased the house without someone else buying the adjacent lot on the same day, as stipulated by the seller. The sale had to be coordinated between the two, and Obama had to be aware of Rezko’s odd decision to have his wife front for the purchase of the lot, despite her lack of income and assets.
Obama had to be aware of more than that, as well. By the time of the real-estate deal, Rezko had already become the focus of lawsuits and a federal investigation. Chicago authorities had publicly announced a probe into Rezko’s business practices with the city — specifically for alleged fraudulent misrepresentation of his business as a minority-owned enterprise in order to compete for municipal contracts. The newspapers had reported for at least two years about Rezko’s malevolent influence in the state.
Why was a politician supposedly interested in clean politics doing business with someone with such a bad public reputation, and with a man whose creditors had already begun to take him to court?
The Times also brings up the name Nadhmi Auchi for the first time. In the middle of Rezko’s financial meltdown, the thirteenth-richest man in the UK suddenly sent Rezko $3.5 million — supposedly for a pizza business. Auchi, however, usually deals in much higher stakes than pizza. When Auchi spends that kind of money, he’s not looking for take-out — he’s looking for influence.
The trial’s start tomorrow may prove a turning point for Obama and the media. They have treated him with unusual deference. This looks like a warning flare that the easy ride has come to an end.

This is the beginning of a brief “see-we-can-be-tough-on-Obama-too” media play. They want to get this out of the way early so that voters will forget it by November.

Unless there is a clean sweep blowout on Tuesday, I think that Clinton stays in to put pressure on Obama in the hope that he flops.
The problem with this Rezko story is that it’s kind of hard for normal people to digest. Someone needs to create a short easy to digest viral video with lots of pictures, diagrams, references, commentary, etc.

excerpt:
FBI PROBE | Real estate broker convicted of fraud becomes a mole for feds to nail Rezko
For the first time, the FBI “mole” who’s expected to be a key prosecution witness against indicted developer and political fund-raiser Tony Rezko is talking.
In an exclusive interview with the Sun-Times, John Thomas said his life became frantic as he amassed hundreds of hours of recorded conversations for federal investigators while trying to maintain the real estate business he built on pluck and hustle.
“Now,” Thomas said, “all I want is a little bit of peace.”
Thomas wouldn’t discuss details of his work for the FBI.
But sources said that, for more than two years when he was giving information to agents, Thomas provided a fly-on-the-wall look inside Rezko’s real estate operations and his desperate attempts to keep his projects afloat.
Sources said Thomas also logged frequent visits to Rezko from Gov. Blagojevich and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). Blagojevich and Obama were among the many politicians for whom Rezko raised campaign cash. Neither has been charged with any wrongdoing.

Meh. This is probably just a token jab at Obama for the McCain smear. After March 4, the negative Obama stories will be few and far between.

That’s been the problem with the entire election cycle. People cannot understand policy so they stick to feeling…. Obama’s got a great slogan and his signs and flyers are so fresh…the fonts, the colors…people start drooling. Then on the R-side of the aisle, we have a numbnut falling all over himself to get on Leno, Colbert, SNL, etc. Love me some identity politics. So much easier to embrace.

Oh, come on…
The “Media”?
This isn’t “The media” this is the New York Times. Their very own carpetbagging senator faces the elimination round on Tuesday and so right in cue and in their inimitable style in the Sunday edition before the big contest they unload a bucketful of mud on her opponent.
But meanwhile, if you think the entire media is about to unload on The Chosen One, check out this fried Twinkie wrapped in cotton candy dipped in honey and sorghum:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3466823.ece
What’s funny is that the Times, having destroyed their credibility on the right now seems to want to weaken their left flank a little as well.
Meanwhile, in case no one else has noticed, Obama’s negatives keep climbing.

Yeah, that’s a real barn-burner you got going there. :-)
Since Obama has already cut all ties with this guy and we’ve yet to see any indication that Obama was actually involved in any illegal dealings, all we really have is another “Hey, he used to be involved with and/or had a picture taken with somebody questionable!” Unfortunately, to play that card you’ll have to match it up against McCain’s current Arizona campaign co-chair.
I agree with at least one part of some of the comments being posted here.. you’re probably not likely to hear too much about it outside of Republican wonk festivals. This is somewhere in the range of a half dozen consective stories which seem to fall into the “is this the best you’ve got on the guy?” bucket.

If the feds can connect Obama directly with this character, they might have something, otherwise, this is just Whitewater light.
Zorro on March 2, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Jizz,
Yeah, this is far too complicated to stick to the Messiah–but that doesn’t mean your boy isn’t dirty. Resko told the FBI that he spoke to Obama about interceding on Auchi’s behalf. Obama denies it. Obama characterizes his relationship with Rezko as “one fundraiser” and a couple of social nights out. Yet Resko’s wife (with zero assets at the time) paid $625K for a piece of land that she sold to Obama for $104K. This land can only be accessed through Obama’s house. All of the money for this sweetheart deal came from a loan from Auchi to Rezko three weeks earlier–again, at a time when Resko’s creditors had taken him to court to recover $10 million he owed them. Oh, and Resko funded BHO campaigns to the tune of $150K.
I realize in Democrat fundraising circles, this is all cleaner than standard operating procedure, and it may well fizzle as a story. Again, too complicated. Still. BHO is just more of the same brand of Chicago-style, deep-dish corrupt politico with a happy, smiling face. If the Norman Hsu fits, wear it.

Obama has nothing going for him except a glossy sheen of moral and political perfection. If that sheen is ever removed, then he’s out of business.
BTW Nadhmi Auchi was prosecuted for his part in the Elf Affair, which was all about purchasing political influence in Africa. The fact that he was loaning large amounts of money to a financially strapped American businessman who happened to be a major fund-raiser for Obama, and who used (presumably) a chunk of that money to purchase a plot of land right next to the house that Obama bought on the same day that Obama bought that house, a plot of land that’s only accessable throught Obama’s property, and then never developed the land… That’s gotta mean something.

The media has not begun to turn on Barack Obama. That will happen only after he is personally asked point blank about this Rezko deal, and has to respond with specifics. The deal looks suspicious, but we don’t have any conclusive evidence of wrongdoing on Obama’s part.

Bill O’Reilly predicted in the wake of the negative fallout from the faux McCain expose that the New York Times would print a negative story about Obama about the time the latter wrapped up the nomination to show that it was not smearing McCain as a Republican. He stated the story would be on the Rezko connection.
O’Reilly has been proven to be prescient once again. Most notable about this “expose” is that it offers nothing new. All of its “facts” have been reported and analyzed in the Chicogo Tribune and other Chicago papers. Obama has already suffered most of the damage he is ultimately likely to unless new incriminating facts come to light.
I regard this article as a cynical attempt to convince the public that the Times is interested in exposing malfeasence no matter who the candidate is, what party he/she belongs to, and where we are in the campaign cycle. It won’t work, especially in light of the refusal in the article to go beyond long-established facts as contrasted with the willingness to air unsubstantiated and malicious rumors in the McCain “expose.”
ptolemy on March 2, 2008 at 11:42 AM
This is way too complicated for the Oprah crowd. Whitewater caused immediate Tired Head when being explained.
Unless Obama gets caught lying under oath nothing will happen. He can simply employ “I don’t recall” or “I didn’t know how he was pulling this together”.
Rezko’s the perfect scapegoat.
BowHuntingTexas on March 2, 2008 at 11:44 AM
If this is the most buzz that the Clintonistas can force out of the MSM at this critical hour for her, then they are truly a disappointment. After all the bogus stories on Republicans, they can only get one old leftover, that’s sad. Back in the day, Bill could have gotten total fabrications on page 1 with a simple phone call. Maybe the MSM is getting a little skittish because of blowback from the blogs.

I don’t really think so. All the ins and outs and who-knows-whats that may come out of this may get pretty involved. But the house-and-lot purchase thing is simple and easy, it smells, and it’s likely to stick.
And of course as others have alluded, Obama’s problem is that if you’re running as Jesus, you’ve set a pretty high bar for yourself as far as honesty goes.
Typhoon on March 2, 2008 at 11:58 AM
AAAAhhhhhh. Ok, I think I’ve got this one figured out. We only heard this brought up once during one of the early debates, and ONLY brought up after Obama brought up her corporate ties to Wal-Mart. It was one of those “oh, no you didn’t” moments. There seems to be a mutual agreement between the two. Don’t bring up my walmart and Whitewater deals and I won’t bring up your Chicago-Rezko mud. Neither really wants to go down that trail. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THE STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS WILL LEAVE IT ALONE. That is why the NYT’s smear of Maverick was so subtantial. It gives either candidate in the future the ability to counter any attack of corruption with the NYT’s hit piece. We all know it is BS, but the damage has been done. If your Mav, even explaining your innocence sounds dirty. I’ll bet the Clinton’s though will touch on it tomorrow morning, if they have any friends left in the press.

Cook County Illinois (aka “Crook County”) just passed a sales tax hike which makes Chicago the highest taxed city in the US (10+).
The County Commissioner President, Todd Stroger – former alderman and son of the previous County President, was endorsed by Obama. This endorsement put Stoger into office.

The mistake a lot of people are making is in thinking that, in a primary between two liberal Democrats, that he big media outlets are going to be monolithic in their support of one candidate or another in the same way you see every four years in the general election, when it’s a Democrat against a Republican for president.
There is still a huge, huge battle going on ideologically between those who have fallen in love with Obama and/or are tired of defending the Clintons, and those who have stuck it out with Bill and Hillary for 16 years and aren’t going to give up now. For every swooning Maureen Dowd at the New York Times ready to in vetro fertilize herself with Barak’s love-child if given the chance, there’s a Paul Krugman, ready to twist himself into a pretzel to somehow show that Obama is an naive dupe of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy who is usurping the natural order of things and will be destroyed by the racist GOP this fall.
The Krugman types may have been at a low ebb for the past few weeks, but they were never powerless within the big media companies they work for. They always had a chance to make their voices heard, and the lampooning of the media’s infatuation with Obama on last week’s Saturday Night Live (a skit, BTW, written by James Downey, the show’s lone openly Republican-leaning writer), has given them the chance they need to get back in the game, when it’s now or never for Hillary to turn the tide and show she’s not dead with wins in Texas and Ohio.

In politics, always look at that which is not there, and always listen for that which is not spoken.
Who is Tony Rezko? Honestly, I assumed he was Italian, since there seemed to be a Chicago connection. The first link I found in Yahoo carefully described him as an immigrant, without naming his country.
An immigrant from nowhere?
He is Syrian
And now here is an Obama connection with another shady mid east character
If Hillary had her Chinese connection, it seems Obama has his web in the mid-east.

The beginning and, I suspect, the end. The Tribune got their bona fides in early, last year, and now have bought themselves a free ride for the campaign, to cheer and obfuscate all the way to the end.
The conclusion of the Times piece is remarkably on point, though:
This is the point that has rarely been made in the analysis of this fraud. Many have noted that in the original deal Obama pays $1.65mm for a property allegedly listed for $1.95mm, and Rezko pays $625m for an adjacent lot listed for the same price. Curious – does anyone know when the seller split the parcel away from the house? Were they really listed separately, or did they apply to split them? The lot is worthless without the house; the only access is through the Obama property.
Bottom line: Obama gets his buddy the crooked fixer to help him pay $1.65 million for a property listed for $2.6 million.
But the Times drops the other shoe: so, what does Rezko get out of the deal? He now owns this lot, which shields Obama’s house from the busy street, but can’t develop it. It’s just junk, unless he gets a favor from the local Alderman to rezone it, or some other accomodation. But now Rezko’s too hot for favors. Even after they further split the lot and give Obama another 10 foot strip for double the appraised value — $104,000 — the fact remains that no reasonable man would make the deal Rezko made, and he will lose his ass on this property, or his creditors will.
Can’t wait to see the scrutiny that will come from the foreclosure sale on the Lot Loan Mrs. Rezko got. That’s when we see the real value in this for Obama — when the final sale of the lot is a dud.
Prediction: to make sure we don’t see that happen, Obama — now flush with cash from his books and his wife’s ghost job — buys the lot from Rezko to “make it all right”.
