Read my post again…I allowed that the A-series jets are called ‘attack jets.’ The pilots, however, are not, were not, and never will be called attack pilots.

You are clueless on both the overall set of responsibilities a Naval Aviator has (there is MUCH more than just flying) as well as what a “fighter pilot” is.

Yeah, no kidding there’s ‘much more than flying.’ A pedantic list would include everything from RSU to PME to Snacko. These are called ‘additional duties’ and their level of involvement in them varies, even to the point of sometimes interfering with the primary duty of flying. However, it is not an exact match for having a primary duty of leading troops.

Most A-4/A-7/A-6 pilots or B/Ns would consider it an insult to be called a “fighter pilot.”

And I guarantee you’d get a fist in the face a lot quicker for calling them bomber pilots.

Seems to me the lunatic left is getting worried about John McCain. Daily smear stories (unsubstantiated of course) in the NYT and now wes clark opening his yap. He couldn’t hold Senator McCains dirty laundry – when we think national policy think about it. McCain chose death before dishonor, he will hold up the highest ideals of our country, the USA (not the UN like obama/hillary), to the end.

The Democrats have more problems going into the general election than they seem to know. I think a few are taking a look at the electoral map and are finally coming to a realization.

That silly story about whether McCain was a true “natural born” citizen shows how desperate some of them are becoming. There are few “handles” on McCain for the smear machine to grab onto so they’re digging below the gutter.

Call me psychic or psycho, if McCain runs a smart campaign — no major mistakes — he will win in November.

This is an awfully weak way of saying that pilots don’t count as leaders in the military. It reveals some serious spite I’d say. On that line, the current Commandant of the Marine Corps was an Air Wing man…but I suppose he knows nothing about real leadership, eh Wes?

Hmmmm. That could be a slap at both McCain (the public target and the one the media will feast upon) and at Obama’s Clintonian military advisor Merrill “Tony” McPeak, who was a real proponent of the “fighter pilots are kings” philosophy while he was in charge of the AF.

The debate about this on military message boards is legendary, so Clark’s not dropping any real bombshells here. Officers in other Services and other specialities in the AF take leadership roles much sooner in their careers than pilots do. Pilots counter that they seem to do OK with substituting crew and formation leadership early in their careers, to the point where they can step into a senior leadership role at the O-5 and above level without too much problem.

I’m bowing out of making any calls on this, but suffice to say it’s nothing novel to consider pilot wings as ‘Universal Management Badges’ and likewise nothing novel to deride them as such…it just depends on what side of the debate you’re on.
