Video: The obligatory “Obama on disarmament” clip

Making the rounds. Most of it’s perfunctorily couched in terms of wasteful spending, which will make it a tad harder for Maverick to attack. Although that mutual disarmament pact with Vladimir Putin sure sounds promising, huh?
Exit question: Is Future Combat Systems going to be a major campaign issue?

The same old song, sung with the same old tune, with the same old lyrics. Only difference is the singer, as usual.
I will end the war!
I will cut missile defense spending!
I will ban all nuclear weapons.
Ah, B.O., but there is that one, little, teenie-weenie tiny word that never fails to send anyone making these same tired promises into a cold, damp, drippy sweat….
How?
pilamaye on February 27, 2008 at 1:55 PM
This needs to be wrapped up in the man’s spending policies.
We are spending money we don’t have on Iraq, but those same ‘don’t have dollars’ will pay for health care? How the hell does that work? We will ’save’ all those billions of funny money just to funny money up something else? How the hell does that fix the deficit?

Of Iran. Or China. I’d feel safer that way. Of the USA? No thanks.
funky chicken on February 27, 2008 at 1:59 PM
I have to say I’m all for strong defense but not wasteful expenses. Future Combat Systems seems to be an over reaching effort.
The Navy has a wishlist too. One I do not want to see completely filled. An entirely new fleet? No. a nice upgrade to existing ships decreasing the amount of crew needed and upgrading the weapons systems yes. We own the sea no need spend untold billions to compete with nations that are one to two generations behind. Keep up the development so that when we do put out a new fleet it is two generations in front of whatever the Russians or Chinese have. I’d also compensate defense contractors with straight cash. Why not give them 25 billion or so for the effort versus spending 100 billion in harware that is not needed.

Yeah Barrack, let’s disarm now while up-and-comings are arming themselves to the teeth with an undying hatred for the US.
“But, but they said they would get rid of theirs too. How was I supposed to know they really didn’t disarm?”
Barrack strikes me as incredibly naive.
Geronimo on February 27, 2008 at 2:04 PM
Obama seems to have forgotten. We didn’t start the war.
But disarmament is completely irresponsible in any terms.
We cannot disarm the Soviets or China. Let alone Pakistan and India and whomever else joins the newquler club.

We should be spending all of our time referring to him as “Barack Hussein Obama” at the most awkward and inappropriate times without actually pointing out any of his extremist positions, in the style of a 3rd grader taunting another on the playground!

Good news. McCain needs to start running Obama’s video clip on a loop.
George McGovern has addressed the tenuousness of running an anti war campaign. No doubt, Obama’s message will be more nuanced, but that is why McCain needs to turn on the jets on this issue.
“I’m not sure that an anti-war Democrat can win,” McGovern said in an interview. “We haven’t proved that yet.”
“Some people point to the fact that the war in Vietnam was dreadfully unpopular,” he said, “but that when I came out for an immediate withdrawal, it helped me win the nomination but not the general election. And there may be some truth about that.”

I have said that Obama will be president more than once, and still hold that view. The only way he does not make it is by an attack happening on US soil.
Videos like this will be spread around to the anti-surrender right, but those on the left will spread it around as well because it is what they want.
Sadly, it will not make a dent into the public that is neither as the MSM will ignore it. It will not hurt Obama in the long run.
What it does is provide a VERY scary look into what our future is going to be. And that attack will happen after Obama takes office and does these things, if it did not occur before to keep him out.

Total flower power city, man. Each of our personalities has a mother side, of softness, compassion, nurturing, and support, and a father side, of hardness, justice, system building, and taking people to task. Obama seems like 100% mother, 0% father. As President will he ever do what has to be done and not fade in the face of criticism when it comes from all sides as it inevitably will? The day GW announced troops being sent to Iraq he almost cried at the thought of the deaths to follow. You may disagree with his decision, but he did what he thought was right, even though it hurt him to do so. I don’t see Obama as capable of making such a decision, of making the hard choices. His only guiding light will be political correctness. It will be Carter squared. While First Lady Mrs. Obama will be harping all the time about how racist the country is.
Paul-Cincy on February 27, 2008 at 2:35 PM
I thought Dennis Kucinich was not running any more. :-)
My god when I was told Obama was more left then Ted Kennedy I didn’t believe it, but after watching this video it is true. He seems to be going after the far left only in his campaigning now.
JeffinSac on February 27, 2008 at 2:37 PM
Are you suggesting that I think Obama is as good as McCain?
I have NEVER even suggested that. I am adamant against McCain, as him as POTUS will destroy the GOP as a political force against liberalism (it is already critically weak). The GOP becomes Democrat Lite with him in office.
Obama destroys the economy to the point that we will be in Great Depression II. He will case more wars to happen the world over as a result of massive reductions to the American Military - the only force keeping most of the “bad guys” in check right now. His domestic polices will bankrupt the nation before he leaves office and sign over any sovereign rights to the UN.
The only good thing about Obama as POTUS is that the USA can be done with black race pimps that like to say Black People cannot make it (the biggest like in the black community today).
Voidseeker on February 27, 2008 at 2:38 PM
A quick suggestion to the McCain campaign? If you need a red-meat opening act? Just show this video a few times. That should do it.

“He [Obama] will CAUSE…”
“(the biggest LIE…”
Need to slow down and not try to respond without doing 3 other things at the same time. I obviously cannot multi-task well.
Voidseeker on February 27, 2008 at 2:42 PM
This is connected with recent reports on how the younger generation is short on knowledge of history, let alone interpretative skills. So when someone mentions that Obama sounds like
two responses can be imagined:
1. “Who?”
2. “I thought he was a basketball player.”
One might be tempted to see a conspiracy; a dumbed-down populace will fall for anything–including pacifism.
baldilocks on February 27, 2008 at 2:43 PM
JeffinSac, I think this video is old, like last year old. He was staking out his far left position in preparation for the democrat party primary, I’d guess.
Boy am I glad somebody kept a copy, otherwise it would be all moderation and troop-support from here on out. Now if he tries that this video will be around to present the contrast….
funky chicken on February 27, 2008 at 2:43 PM
“a ban on the production of fissile material”
besides the obvious nuclear weapons, what other things require fissile materials?
Things like:
Nuclear power plants (guess we won’t see the french signing on)
Nuclear powered ships, (anyone know how many are up for refitting in the next 4 years)
Nuclear Medicine, (bad enough Chalk River needs to be fixed, what happens when you can’t get fuel for it)
Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on February 27, 2008 at 2:44 PM

I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if he has no idea “Future Combat System” refers to a specific Army agenda. I’m sure he’s just using the phrase generally for all that icky military stuff.
There’s a lot to be said about closely scrutinizing procurement in light of our current and likely future conflicts, and I have a great deal of confidence that McCain would do that (moreso than most Republicans). The problem is that I thoroughly believe Obama isn’t interested at all in actually looking critically at modernization, but simply in stopping as much of it as he possibly can.
Blacklake on February 27, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Blacklake, yeah there is a guy over at AOS who went on and on about how McCain stopped the Boeing 767 tanker lease a few years back, and about how that meant that McCain wanted our guys flying deathtraps, blah blah.
