Record, film industry still backing antiwar horse (or, maybe just beating its corpse)

Several anti-war musicians and moviemakers are getting together to try and squeeze one last dollar out of the anti-war movement before we win. This time, Der Gut tells us, they’re collaborating on a big antiwar CD which will serve as the soundtrack to the next big antiwar film. Of course! All those other anti-war films did so well.
I see a fundamental fallacy here: the notion that there is a huge market for antiwar sentiment that just hasn’t been tapped yet. But who knows? I’m no recording executive. There are probably a few thousand rich hippies within fifty miles of my current location who want to be part of a movement, maaaan, and will shell out $39.95 or whatever for the newest boxed-set antiwar experience. So maybe this new endeavor is just what the doctor ordered and it will be received marginally better than were John Cougar Mellencamp and Joan Baez at Walter Reed…
What’s that you say? Our antiwar creative class grunting out a doomed yet politically correct antiwar cowflop is no longer news? Well, then try on this one from the headlines–the new Hollywood chic is orange ribbons symbolizing solidarity with Al Qaeda. Or at least those members of Al Qaeda who were dumb enough to find themselves detained in Gitmo. (More here). Surprised? No? Dang.
Then how about this to rock your world: Maxim magazine published a review of an unreleased Black Crowes album which they never listened to.
Ace doesn’t seem too surprised:
Look, it’s just Maxim. But we all know jackasses like Lewis Lapham have written articles ripping the intolerance on display at, say, the Republican National Convention before the event ever took place.
Ace is just a cynic. I am floored. If you can’t trust a glossy mens’ fashion lifestyle magazine subsidized by ads for Axe Body Spray, who can you trust? Whither shall I turn for unbiased, reliable advice on how to be a real man, if not to the pages of Maxim?

always showing their “solidarity” with our enemies…
why don’t they take a 9 mm and show it some “solidarity” by putting it in their mouths?
blatantblue on February 27, 2008 at 9:20 AM
When is Hollywood going to realize that Hippies have not money? America is a freedom defending warrior class. This is part of how we have become great. The pioneers, the fearless, the not so politically correct. A duck is a duck and a rose is a rose. Denying reality is what hippies do best.
Egfrow on February 27, 2008 at 9:21 AM
I was in a video store the other day looking for a very specific old war movie, and ran into a DVD that was advertised as “One of the greatest anti-war movies ever made”. I guess they couldn’t come out and say “one of the worst movies ever made”, but I was astonished at the marketing strategy.

“America is a freedom defending warrior class.”
That comment should be mandatory teaching in any American History class. It is true, there’s nothing wrong with it, and it would help educate people as to where we came from, how we got here, and where we need to be going.

Let me see, pining away for murderers while ignoring the victims? Yep, perfect Hollyweird response.
Richard Romano on February 27, 2008 at 9:31 AM
See-dubya has the snark set on stun. Love it.
I hope Hotair keeps their eyes peeled for an opportunity to voice our opposition to their orange ribbons. Something loud, something embarrassing. So then they can whine about being victims and being suppressed.
Theworldisnotenough on February 27, 2008 at 9:32 AM
Dude, wouldn’t the ultimate gag be to convince asll the anti-war hacks to make a mega budget anti-war movie? Spend hundreds of millions of dollars for a movie no one will see. These other films have been self indulgent and well within these actors and directors budgets. No pain there. They need to lose really big.
If 24 goes as far left as the tea leaves indicate, it ratings should crash and burn. Then Joel Surnow comes right back with another hit.
Theworldisnotenough on February 27, 2008 at 9:37 AM
Oh good lord pleeeeeeease don’t let the Black Crowes be one of those anti-war standard-bearers…frickin Pearl Jam…every time they do one of these stories it always seems I lose a fave, why do they have to strip away every damn band that I like!?!
(Silently praying that the Black Crowes aren’t part of ‘them’)
TheGoblinKing on February 27, 2008 at 9:37 AM
OK, I was on a band fan site a few years ago and suggested that the musicians on the site put together a tribute CD… and lo and behold, they’ve put together two so far, and received great feedback from the band as well.
Who’s in? I know there are musicians on here. Let’s put together some honest-to-God “we support the troops” songs by musicians who actually support the troops, slap it up on iTunes and/or TuneCore, and donate any proceeds.
I’ll handle the coordination, slapping up, and publicity unless anyone else has more experience.
If’n you’d like to make it happen, sign up below, and if there’s enough interest I’ll take it over to my site for the logistics.

That’s it. I’m gonna have to go get my copy of ‘The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion’ out of the car and pray to the gods of southern-gospel-slide-guitar-rolling-stones-jam-bands that this is not true!

These are the same Hollyweird freaks who put out one film after another, portraying our president as a nation building maniac, our Veep as a money-grubbing capitalist set on draining every last dollar from third world countires, our troops as baby killers who stalk the innocent in the dark of night …. and then complain about how President Bush made the whole world hate America.
Sorry Hollyweird, homey don’t buy that. Turns out you, and your anti-war drivel, paint the picture of America as Satan. You, churn the hate. You, produce celluloid that shows the worst traits in people. You, would sell out your country for a movie ticket. You, drool over the fascist dictators who starve their own people. You, are the biggest disgrace on this planet.
I can only hope, if or when the day comes when terrorism strikes home in Hollywood, our military commanders refuse to send in troops and tell Michael Moore & Company to wear their orange ribbons as a sign of camaraderie with the thugs who just whacked their yellow butts.
Let us know how that works out for ya.

Ridiculous. What a bunch of clueless, ignorant, self-centered imbeciles. But, they support the troops, right? Uh, no. People used to wear POW bracelets and yellow ribbons for our troops, but now these losers are wearing ribbons to demonstrate sympathy for al-Qaeda? Unbelievable. I no longer think these people are really anti-war…they’re just on the other side.

How dumb has the Hollywood Left gotten that they have sunk to the equivalent of “Free The Al Qaeda Three Hundred!” What’s next? When Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is on trial for masterminding the Sep 11 plot, will they be marching with orange ribbons saying “FREE KSM!” or protesting his death sentence?

Robert Redford was interviewed by Dan Rather at the Sundance Film Festival. Rather asked Redford about the disappointing box office returns for the “so called anti-war films”. Redford blamed the studios. He blamed the studios for releasing all the movies within a small window forcing them to compete with eachother for an audience.
This was yet another tally in the “Robert Redford is a tool” column. The guy is an acting great. He’s already had many a fight with Hollywood studios which was the foundation for his Sundance Film Festival anyway. Yet the man is STILL trying to pawn blame on the studios for below average film making.

I actually want to thank the music critics of Maxim for saving me money on subscriptions to their magazine. Since they like to trash bands I like such as Dream Theater, Rush and Porcupine Tree, I haven’t had the desire to renew my subsciption, thus saving about $36.00.

That whole decline in violence in Iraq didn’t really fit in with their pre-conceived notions. It’s a lot easier to wear a stupid little ribbon than actually analyze what the hell’s going on.

I thought the orange ribbons and bracelets were in “support” of the Gitmo detainees?
Yeah, I love it when the maroons (Bugs Bunny reference) seek solidarity with terrorists like KSM et al. Maybe if we’re lucky we can relocate some detainees to California liberals’ houses on an incarceration VISA and then we can televise the ensuing massacres? I’m not saying that I want to see anyone killed, its just that these loons are so whacked that they actually want to join in solidarity with people that are willing to kill themselves just to have an opportunity to murder some Americans. They just don’t understand that there is no peaceful dialogue with Al Quada, they want nothing more than to kill us and bring a totalitarian Islamic state to the world…I’m thinking that the Hollyweird crowd doesn’t realize that Al Qaeda still sees them as “Americans” regardless of their hatred for the US and their “blame America first” stance.
It would just be an interesting to see how that would play out. I keep thinking of that movie, Mars Attacks! when the Martians are running around going, “Ack, ack! Don’t run, we come in peace, Bzzzzztttt-zap!”

FREE THE GITMO 600!
In their neighborhoods.
With sharpened butcher knives.
And a “Map of the Stars Homes”.
Then see them all in their last video:
“The Nick Berg Story“.
profitsbeard on February 27, 2008 at 10:24 AM
What a bunch of pretentious A-holes. Instead of keeping the terrorists in Gitmo we should make every left-wing nut in Hollywood open up their homes and let them live there. We can build a big wall around Hollywood so that none of them can get out.
It makes me sick that these nuts would not be caught dead wearing a support the troops ribbon but will support the terrorists in Gitmo.

Amazingly (actually, it isn’t amazing, its common sense), speaking with your pocketbook really works! Buy albums where the artists keep their opinions to themselves about politics, and avoid the albums where they don’t. Definitely avoid their concerts, because then you don’t have the option of withholding your money when they inevitably spew some snarky political comments.
Here is an interesting tid-bit for you. Do you know the difference between multi-millionaire athletes and multi-millionaire actors? For the most part, the athletes are smart enough to realize that their opinions don’t mean anything more just because they’re rich and have media exposure. Its weird how we generalize professional athletes to be of “less intelligence” than the norm, and yet they’re smarter than the Hollyweird crowd…
Geministorm on February 27, 2008 at 10:32 AM
I hate to admit it, but I really was shocked, not with the planned anti-war movie and soundtrack but with the ribbons and review.
What is wrong with these people? I often wish I didn’t know anything about any of this. It would be so much easier to listen to good music and watch decent movies without getting sick.

About the same time that the Democrats realize that no matter how much noise the college students make about defeating the “rethuglicans”, the lazy students aren’t going to get up out of bed on election day and go vote.
In other words, never. So we’re stuck with Hollywood thinking they know how the world thinks. So ridiculous.

I recall, when living in DC, walking past a power box and seeing a poster “Free the Cuba six”. Considering I was in an area filled with anti-war, anti US, groups I was surprised. Until I read that the Cuba six were six Cuban spies jailed for spying in Florida.
This at the same time as Cuba has people jailed for speaking out against the Cuban regime. Mind you, some of those jailed were librarians who stocked other than the party line on the shelves of theior libraries.

Usually the only difference between a war movie and an anti-war movie is one scene were the hero feels sorry for all the enemies he killed.
tommylotto on February 27, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Oh, should think that since only three people watched the Oscars, that the antiwar movies have all bombed, that people like Sheryl Crowe and her musical friends are all bombing laughingstocks, that the Dixie Chicks will never acheive the success they had before they opened their big yaps, that George Clooney is only a big star is in his own mind, people’s opinions are already being stated. That’s why Hollywood lowers itself to releasing movies like “Transformers”, because their anti-war crap is bombing so bad. Gotta make money somehow.
Of course most movies nowadays get an indifferent shrug from me, the TV shows I most watch are “Cops”, and most radio stations I’ve shut off. So it could just be me.

There was a lot of talent in the 60’s and 70’s. Rock and Roll’s heyday and good movies too. I didn’t agree with much of what was said back then but I enjoyed their talent.
Many in the left art world seem to beleive that their good work equals correctness of thought and that their art can sway the masses. But look, a movie or a song is an emotion laden device, a small part of a road map for life.
Black Sabbath had a prodrug and antidrug song on the same album! The Who’s “meet the new boss, same as the old boss” line should make everyone sit back and think about their convictions every once in a while. I still get drunk and play air gutiar to that tune. My dad, a WWII vet, loved MASH because it was funny but he was not swayed.
Bottom line. These folks today, from producers on down, just don’t have that much talent.

Anyone who wears an orange ribbon in solidarity with the terrorists at Gitmo ought to have an orange band printed across their photos whenever they are shown on conservative sites, with the wording “Support the Terrorists”.
Because it makes them feel so superior.
NellE on February 27, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Agreed. I’m sure these nitwits would respond with, “well, we are showing solidarity with those innocents who are incarcerated there unjustly”…to which you could ask, “what about those who are known to have been involved in the killing of Americans such as KSM”.
…their likely response to that would be “well, he wouldn’t have done so if not for our policy in the Middle East.”
Simply amazing how d@mn stupid Hollyweird types can be.

I don’t know that I would wear a ribbon supporting “solidarity”, but then I’m not much for ribbons. I never wore the AIDS ribbon, I think the magnetic “Support Our Troops” ribbons on cars are flat out lame, even though I do support the troops. I’m not one to wear my support on my sleeve.
However, I certainly support the basic human rights as outlines 700 years ago in Habeas Corpus. I also support the notion that all people on this planet are entitled to these rights. If I were shown hard evidence that these prisone-sorry, detainees, were being mistreated, I’d write a letter, make angry posts online, maybe even donate money to an organization fighting for these most basic rights.
Remember our Christian way here folks, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Remember your compassion. Being Christian doesn’t mean you can’t fight…but I’m pretty sure Jesus wouldn’t approve of mistreating the imprisoned…and I’m pretty sure he’d be speaking from experience.
