Just across at the Times. K-Lo already has an announcement up but much, much, much more is bound to follow at the Corner. RIP.
Update: Obligatory. Buckley vs. Vidal.
Update: An hour with Buckley from the Charlie Rose Show in 2006.
Update: And here’s his most famous piece of writing — the publisher’s statement from the first issue of NR. “NATIONAL REVIEW is out of place, in the sense that the United Nations and the League of Women Voters and the New York Times and Henry Steele Commager are in place.”
Update: They found him at his desk, according to the Times obituary, which must have been on standby for years. Quote: “Two more books, one a political novel, and the other a history of the magazine called ‘Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription’ are scheduled to be published in 2007.”
Update: What Buckley saw at the rEVOLution:
“How would you define the Birch fallacy?” Jay Hall asked.
“The fallacy,” I said, “is the assumption that you can infer subjective intention from objective consequence: we lost China to the Communists, therefore the President of the United States and the Secretary of State wished China to go to the Communists.”
“I like that,” Goldwater said.
Update: Here’s NRO’s obit.

Would you gentlemen please call a truce so that we can get back to WFB w/out all the background noise?
==================
I watched the rest of that Joe Lieberman tribute and I must say I became quite misty.

Here is another American hero who is going to get the Medal of Honor.
wowaditaka is now in the lexicon.

RIP ….America and the world has lost one of the great voices of reason.
I love that Buckley vs. Vidal clips….cracks me up everytime. I wonder what Buck’s obit would say if Vidal wrote it?
Slippery on February 27, 2008 at 5:36 PM
Tell Reagan “hello” and we miss him, Mr. Buckley. Rest in peace, sir.
SouthernGent on February 27, 2008 at 6:02 PM
For all the threads you could crap up with petty and classless bickering, this is by far the least appropriate one in which to do it.
Shame on all of you.

I fully agree. My apologies to all subjected.

MadisonConservative sees nothing wrong with killing people for crossing the border, but he sure acts polite. Like a cross between Eddie Haskel and the DC Sniper.
Hiney Von Pewps on February 27, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Thank you very much for that link. God bless that hero.
Here’s hoping that his story rises from local-interest news to nationwide coverage. The nation needs to read about such man.
Woodrow Wilson Keeble is now on my list of people I shall seek out in the afterlife, to shake hands and say thanks. Right up there with Mr. William F. Buckley.

God was kind and took Buckley before he could see what this country he loved is about to become. RIP WFB.
ihasurnominashun on February 27, 2008 at 7:01 PM
Okay, who’ll take bets on who will be “Worst Person In The World”… WFB Jr., or Chrissy, who gave a positive commentary on an influential conservative intellectual?
kevcad on February 27, 2008 at 7:36 PM
OOPS! That should be Chris Matthews, not “Chrissy”.
kevcad on February 27, 2008 at 7:37 PM
There’s not enough of WFB at YouTube.
Where can we download or buy all those wonderful years of Firing Line?
toliver on February 27, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Oh yeah, here’s some good NPR interviews.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=3387080
Actually, I’m only assuming that they are all good, as I’ve only listened to the first one. It’s a 1988 program where WFB owns Ms Gross.
toliver on February 27, 2008 at 7:58 PM
To think, some silly HA commenters were mocking Buckley’s son just the other day.
Chris is carrying William’s legacy just fine.
jgapinoy on February 27, 2008 at 8:16 PM
I would like to like to confer my heart felt condolences to the familial constituents at this poignant and troublesome occasion. May he find refuge in the bosom of his preferred theological entity.

I liked Buckley before he abandoned us Caucasians and The National Question:
May he rest in peace, comrades.

Another dead hero. We sorely need some new ones.
May he rest in peace.

For some reason,i didn’t go my usually route,Drudge,
NewsBusters,Hot Air.Straight to NewsBusters,and am
sadened to learn that Mr.Willaim F Buckley has passed
away.
I remember over the years,a while back tho that Rush
would fondly talk about Mr.Buckley,I can’t remember the
exact story, but I think Rush said he was invited to Mr.
Buckleys house.
Rush Limbaugh would say,I’m no intellect, why does Mr.Buckley
want to talk to me,that was Rush early start of his career.
William F. Buckley has been a great Conservative, and
Republican,a great man for the cause, and an American Icon!
To his family, from Hot Air, our prayers are with you.
God Speed: MR.William F.Buckley.
canopfor on February 27, 2008 at 10:01 PM
William F. Buckley is the main reason I am a conservative. His logic and diction were without peer. I will miss him…..deeply.
gsmiley on February 27, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Bill Buckley was a good man and a real intellectual, may God rest his soul.

The pot calling the kettle black.
Johan Klaus on February 27, 2008 at 11:27 PM
Your German spelling and conjugation sucks.
***
Speaking of der hinterland…
You make the argument which refutes this mantra of Republican righteousness on racial issues.
As long as Republicans try to argue that we are somehow less racist because we are the party of Lincoln we will be slapped in the face with the reality by the likes of petit bourgeois.
***
For the record, I would like to be able to ID the faction responsible for my party’s demise. Is there a name or label you give yourself? Do you call your treehouse “headquarters” or “homebase?” Is a 300 thread count OK for the white sheets?
The Race Card on February 27, 2008 at 11:36 PM
RIP William F. Buckley.
You were unafraid to evolve, but proud to stay the same. While not always my cup of tea, your precise use of words and unwavering exercise of your first amendment rights were admirable.
Good Job, Sir!
The Race Card on February 27, 2008 at 11:43 PM
The spelling is from my Mengen school book and was correct when I learned it about seventy years ago. The grammar is bad, but the point is correct; the name calling used by you trolls instead of using facts.
Johan Klaus on February 28, 2008 at 12:16 AM
By the way Hinterland is capitalized.
Johan Klaus on February 28, 2008 at 12:21 AM
My German sucks too, but I don’t presume to bore everybody else with it.
You are awesome! You call me a “troll” in the same breath with which disavow name-calling; that’s swift.
For the record, I did not call you a name. I don’t need a label to know what you are. And if you’re defending the crap being coughed up by petit bourgeois, then I do have a label for you — dead weight.
The Race Card on February 28, 2008 at 12:32 AM
The German was only used with Herr Hiney because of his German sounding call name. I was refering to names that he and others called people that want to have our laws enforced and border controlled.
Johan Klaus on February 28, 2008 at 12:49 AM
One of his final novels laid bare the fallacies of Birchers, Objectivists and other fringe elements that he drummed out of the conservative movement lo those many years ago. I’m not usually a fan of the mystery/sleuthing genre, but I enjoyed that one, as well as The Redhunter, one of my favorite WFB works of fiction.
Gerard on February 28, 2008 at 3:59 AM
A racist white socialist. Sometimes I lose faith in the theory of evolution.
Mr. Buckley was often a bit embarrassed of things he had written when he was a young man. Usually because he felt his style was not as evolved as his later works. It is too bad that ignorant racists feel that the title “conservative” means “ignorant racist”. It is doubly true when racist fools impute anonymous writings to Mr. Buckley although nothing that they attribute to him matches his prose in the slightest. He evolved with our nation as he helped reshape and redefine intellectual boundaries during his decades on this earth.
I don’t believe that a conservative website is the place for anyone who feels comfortable using the term “us Caucasians”. There are still plenty of places I’m sure you can find employment as a southern democrat doing reenactments of your dearly missed pre-civil war days.
Rogue Traveler on February 28, 2008 at 9:04 AM
My first exposure to conservatism was those great debates between Gore Vidal and WFB IN 68. It didn’t turn me into a conservative overnight, but it sure set me on the path. RIP Mr. Buckley, and thank you for setting me straight.
pueblo1032 on February 28, 2008 at 9:44 AM
YouTube doesn’t have the whole thing I don’t think. Is there a transcript available for that debate? Anything?
toliver on February 28, 2008 at 10:33 AM
I mourn the passing of a hero, the man who showed it was possible to be brilliant, intellectually curious, well-spoken, a generous and compassionate mentor, a joyful partaker of the good things in life, and Conservative.
Alas, we shall not see his like again.
MLEH on February 28, 2008 at 10:52 AM
From those PBS shows I know him best. Thanks mm for reminding me. As The Race Card said, I also didn’t have to agree with him on every single issue, and at times found him to be quite primadonaish, but the intellect, and his power with words and ideas, always shone through. Great man, indeed.
RushBaby, thanks for the good quotes/references.

Buckley v. Vidal
Gerard on February 28, 2008 at 3:15 PM
Funny how you use ad hominem to make your point directed towards someone you don’t know. This is a fine example of intellectual deficiency so prominent amongst the cultural marxists such as yourself. “Racist” is what you are called when you win an argument against a Marcusean-style cultural marxist.
And why is that? For decades we have had Garvey’s UNIA and the NAACP, LULAC, NCLR, MEChA, Black Panthers, Nation of Islam, Chinese for Affirmataive Action, etc., yet you do not denounce these groups. People are free to associate however they please, this is a free country, last time I checked.
No, you as an alleged “conservative,” will not denounce any other ethnic organization except when it applies to Caucasians. That is what makes you a racist.
Take a look on any college campus: every race and ethinicity is represented in a student group, except whites. There are racially segregated ethnic studies courses, racially segregated housing, and even racially segregated graduation ceremonies. You do not denounce this because it is not politically correct. You, as a “conservative” therefore support Jim Crow academics.
For you to deny Caucasians the right to organize and represent their own interests, like the National Review did in 1957 (and an unpenned editorial is not “anonymous” as you contend when the editor is Buckley himself) and call any social organization “racist” belies your own racist beliefs.
Nice try. Maybe Herbert Marcuse himself or Angela Davis is here post under the nom du guerre “rogue traveler.”
petit bourgeois on February 28, 2008 at 4:25 PM
Silly me. And all this time I was wondering what all those plants from the Clinton campaign were going to do with their time — now that you can stick a fork in Hillary. I didn’t realize that AP had so many job openings in the HotAir troll category.
My collie says:
CyberCipher on February 28, 2008 at 4:28 PM
And one more thing: If I shed a tear every time some idiot called me a racist, I would not have the fortitude to make decent arguments. I am a Berkeley grad, so being called a racist by nutjobs from both sides of the political spectrum is natural occurrence, like rain falling from the sky. I have been linked by Michelle Malkin since 2003, and I don’t think she is known to associate with racists, but nice try anyway.
In addition, my city, Santa Ana, California, was once a great place to live before being invaded, occupied and colonized by Mexico. Since the US Census is not accurate, local marketing surveys put my city at 92% “hispanic.” What kind of racist would live in such a city? Unlike Captain Ed, I am staying to fight for my country instead of leaving California with my tail between my legs.
Lastly, Buckley’s ties to Mexico go back very far, like the Bush family. His first language was Spanish. He was a great, great man, but once he abandoned any defense of Caucasians or the National Question (e.g. immigration restriction), he was no longer a “conservative” in my eyes, and neither is the NR.
Nevertheless, he, Goldwater and Reagan are probably sharing stories in heaven as we speak.
petit bourgeois on February 28, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Coming from someone who speaks through an imaginary dog, you have little credibility on anything you say.
petit bourgeois on February 28, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Sad day for conservatism. However, now that the last great man of that era has passed, we might be able to start anew. He casts a long shadow.
Krydor on February 28, 2008 at 5:40 PM
Go ahead. Speak evil of my collie. Question his credibility. No matter.
Your disparaging comments not alter the fact that modern genetic science has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that YOU, my friend, (with all your Caucasian bluster) are the direct descendent of an African bushman. You are a mere 2000 generations (or less) removed from your African ancestor. The evidence is in your DNA and it can not be denied.
Don’t like reading my collie? Fine. Read Spencer Wells. He’s a Stanford Ph.D. working at Oxford. Who needs my collie? Especially when Wells’ published works show that you are as backward as a 7th century Muslim.
Perhaps your kind NEEDS to champion the “white race” because of the TRUTH. After all, someone has to champion the inferior race, don’t they?
I smell FEAR. Anyone else out there smell it? It’s a repulsive odor IMHO. Life has taught me that FEAR is one of the Evil One’s most effective weapons. I would even venture to say that throughout history, more people have been destroyed by FEAR than almost anything else that I can think of.
Perfect love drives out all fear. Lord, hear my prayer — give me love so that I don’t end-up like petit bourgeois.
