Video: Olby assured that it’s okay for Jon Stewart to crack jokes about Obama’s name

This is like watching wrestling as a kid, when the bad-guy tag team would have some sort of contrived falling out in the middle of the match and end up swinging at each other. Every kid watching felt the same panic as the natural order of things was momentarily upended: Who do I root for? Stewart, who dared to make the Obama/Osama joke that must never be made? Or Olbermann, who dared to call him on it? Luckily Patton Oswalt is there to jump in the ring and explain to KO that no, Stewart isn’t really suggesting a moral equivalence between Obama and terrorist masterminds, whereupon a relieved Olby downshifts into a lament about SNL using a white actor to play Obama. Oswalt, bless his heart, politely craps on that too.

Good job on the “Coultergeist” reference, though, Keith, just to let the nutroots know you’re still on the team.

I can’t believe anyone even takes this guy seriously. He was so much better on Sportscenter. Now he’s just a wacko lefty who wouldn’t know what a fact was if it bounced off a backboard and hit him in the head.

Erockk on February 26, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Didn’t this a**hat refer to our POTUS/Hitler in the same sentence?

Hahahaha That was perfect; I remember that feeling exactly.

joewm315 on February 26, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Good God. Olberman gets to stay on TV…uh… why?

Sugar Land on February 26, 2008 at 11:32 AM

How to Kill a Joke:

Have these doofuses analyze it.

(Or have any doofuses analyze it. A joke, analyzed, is like a watch dismantled: ticked off.)

Pam on February 26, 2008 at 11:27 AM

The first ever political thing I ever hear Olby utter was during the Monica Lewnsky matter he was interveiwing some legal expert and made an offhand reference that “Ken Starr looks like Heinrich Himmler”

I couldnt believe that a commentator would even say that much less get away with it.

Sigh was the 1990s and the Clintons were king and it was OK to be anti Republican.

DEEEEEEEEEEEPPP, DDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPP, REALLY DDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPP DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

jimbo2008 on February 26, 2008 at 11:34 AM

This guy is an idiot.

j0 on February 26, 2008 at 11:35 AM

With our bad luck Olby could very well be the White House Spokesman under an Obama Administration. Be nice to have the world get the US veiw from him.

William Amos on February 26, 2008 at 11:37 AM

Ann Coulter is not trying to be funny when she brings up Hussein.

PrezHussein on February 26, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Since when did Saddam Hussein become a bad guy?

Tzetzes on February 26, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Now I know why it is so hard to convert liberals to Christianity. They are too sensitive to take the beating that comes from standing with Christ.

And regarding SNL, isn’t Obama half white? For Olby to be consistent, wouldn’t a half white and half black guy have to play Obama?

ReaganEvangelical on February 26, 2008 at 11:43 AM

William Amos on February 26, 2008 at 11:33 AM

I bet if confronted, he would say “that’s different”

Pam on February 26, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Among the great mysteries of the modern age, such as does Bigfoot exist, what really happened at Roswell in 1945, will we ever know the truth about the Kennedy Assassination, and other great mysteries, ranking right up there at #1 is why do they bother to put this moron in front of a camera, hook him up to a microphone and let them blather like the certified a$$clown that he is, and actually pay him for it?!!!!

pilamaye on February 26, 2008 at 11:45 AM

That was almost painful. He reminds me of a friend of mine who makes horrible jokes and laughs at them since no one else will.

As far as having a black person play Obama, the man is half white and as such is fairly light-skinned. Olberman’s point about people not caring because we’ve come so far is so stupid after he just tried to point out that SNL should have gotten a black person to play Obama.

Esthier on February 26, 2008 at 11:45 AM

If the guy is half white, I guess they really need someone with that lineage to play him, by KO’s logic.

mikeyboss on February 26, 2008 at 11:46 AM

“Since when did Saddam Hussein become a bad guy?”

Right, who are we to judge?

NoDonkey on February 26, 2008 at 11:47 AM

This makes me wonder what exactly Keith Olbermann finds funny. Does KO laugh at anything that doesn’t double as a vicious insult against righties? There’s no joy whatsoever in KO’s public persona, I wonder what it would take for this guy to crack a smile at something other than “O’Reilly is Hitler and Fox News is worse than the KKK.”

Enrique on February 26, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Ann Coulter is not trying to be funny when she brings up Hussein.

PrezHussein on February 26, 2008 at 11:39 AM

No. But Olbermann is trying to be funny with his inane commentary. What is funny to me is watching him make such a horse’s posterior out of himself. This is the kind of humor that makes one a clown, not a commedian, and definitely not a serious political commentator.

Lawrence on February 26, 2008 at 11:53 AM

What a fall from grace. Olby had the best job in the world as a Sportscenter anchor. He walked away from it either in a contract squabble or the fact he didn’t get Charlie Steiner’s lead anchor role when he retired. That went to Dan Patrick. After leaving and becoming this new political hack, he and Patrick remained friends. Then, lol, Patrick made the deadly mistake of bringing Olby back on his radio show on Fridays. One year later, Dan Patrick the most respected man at ESPN left the network after a career of great service. Many speculate that his listening audience dropped by half. Now NBC thinks that they can pawn him off as a Football analyst. I haven’t watched one minute of their pregame of halftime specials due to the scum he spits on a nightly basis. I’m no media expert, but i’ll venture that their ratings aren’t good and he probably won’t be brought back this fall, but we’ll see.

Keith Olbermann and Patton Oswalt together on the same show? And they didn’t morph into a giant vortex of pure suck? Sorry, I’m calling BS, one of those two is an impostor.

Keith Olbermann award accepted by Bill Cunningham (for calling Obama “Barack Mohammed Hussein Obama”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l37jFkaDVv4

I’ll try to do my best to relieve Olby about the Coultergeist’s “Osama” jokes by telling him that she was only making fun of the unfunny liberal politicians who accidentally called him that while campaigning for him.

And can I call him a racist for suggesting that a half-white man being played for a full-white man was a bad thing?

OneGyT on February 26, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Tweedle Dum going to Tweedle Dee for expert commentary on politics in America.

Impressive journalism.

end up swinging at each other

This was cover fire so next time Olberman bashes some conservative for making the same joke he can rationalize it.

PrezHussein on February 26, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Maybe not, but it is funny. Obama supporters even slip up and call him Osama sometimes. His middle name just adds to the hilarity.

OneGyT on February 26, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Actually, Olberman is referring to the fact that Coulter calls him B. Hussein Obama.

It was Rush that made fun of Kennedy by calling Obama “Osama” in song.

Joe Buck thought that that was a DISGUSTING act.

danking70 on February 26, 2008 at 12:28 PM

“…and nobody bothers to point fingers at colors, or anything else.”
Except you, Olby… except you.

I like how he gets his underoos all in a bunch over *gasp* a WHITE MAN playing Obama (and playing him quite well, I thought), until Patton disagrees. Then it’s, “Yeah, we’ve come such a long way!” from the Olberdork.

What a terrible person.

I said this exact thing to a Democrat friend of mine who is leaning toward ObamaMessiah, and he replied, “no one could ever be that crazy. The DC press crew would pants him and kick him the minute he walked in the room.”

TC@LeatherPenguin on February 26, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Maybe MSNBC should use a REAL News Anchor rather than a Sportscasting Hack!

I’m Offended

sithlord_1968 on February 26, 2008 at 12:35 PM

I actually thought “Gaydolf Titler” was funny.

On the plus side, it’s good to see eunuchs can get anchor jobs in political commentary. I remember the days when castrati were stuck singing jingles.

emailnuevo on February 26, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Olby-as-political-analyst is really painful to watch.

amkun on February 26, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Rosie O’Donnell called him the best newscaster on tv. That was enough for me to know this guy is a nutjob.

My eyes are burning after wathing Oberrated and Oswald!

TroubledMonkey on February 26, 2008 at 12:45 PM

I wonder if Keef Olberdouche, back when he was a child and getting beat up for his lunch money on the way to school every day and getting picked last for kick-ball teams during recess, ever imagined in his wildest dreams he’d someday have his own TV news spot where he could get payback and wreak havoc using lies, ommissions, distortions and inuendo on the “bully” conservatives.

SilverStar830 on February 26, 2008 at 12:47 PM

I can deal with Olbermann being a partisan shill. But his constant hypocrisy is really annoying.

It’s all funny Keith, yet you’re stupid enough that you have to ask the question in the first place. Also stupid enough to find any part of it profound.

Smug and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

GeeWhiz on February 26, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Started watching, then after 27 seconds came to my senses. Shame on you Allah, no warning on length?!

Are people finally starting to realize that Hussein O is a dangerous leftist/jihadist running for U.S. president?

SaintOlaf on February 26, 2008 at 1:28 PM

As a lone voice of dissent, who is going to attempt to test the waters here a bit. I will say this:

His “over the top” and “head exploding” special comments aside, I happen to like his show. I don’t always agree with what he says, But I do like the show.

Have said that….:

AP: On that same show, Keith Olbermann highly criticized Hillary Clinton for her sudden change in rhetoric towards Obama. If you would have looked closer, you would have seen that.

But then again, this is a Conservative Website, and it is your job to insult Liberals. Seems that’s all Republicans are good at these days, isn’t it? *Grinning*

WayWard Fundamentalist Christian on February 26, 2008 at 1:30 PM

it’s okay for Jon Stewart to crack jokes about Obama’s name

Of course, it is. Intent is important. It’s what can differentiate between a first degree murder and an accident. Stewart obviously does not mean to project animosity that people have towards a segment of the Muslim population onto undeserving Obama. Coulter obviously does. Hence the former is completely justified to do it, while the latter isn’t.

freevillage on February 26, 2008 at 1:33 PM

The failed, ESPN jock-sniffer cut off way too much oxygen to his brain.

Kids, remember, breathing through a jockstrap is harmful.

OhEssYouCowboys on February 26, 2008 at 1:39 PM

Patton Oswalt is 100% when pointing out that Bill Clinton wasn’t played by a southerner, so what’s the big deal? I’d add to that, the fact that John Kerry wasn’t played by a horse, and I’ve never seen The Kool Aid guy playing the role of Ted Kennedy (a role he was born to play, as a giant, round, red faced guy full of liquid). Oh and one other thing…. from that clip, Armison wasn’t that bad at doing Obama, but his voice was way too high.

RightWinged on February 26, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Speaking the truth about leftists is an insult?

He sang a different tune before Cankles lost ten in a row.

He’s not a man of conviction, he’s a toolbag looking for seven more viewers who are dumb enough to buy his shtick.

Make that six.

PrezHussein on February 26, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Ann Coulter is almost always trying to be funny. That’s why the humor-challenged are almost always reacting in outrage.

What distinguishes her from comedians is that she’s almost always trying to use humor to make a point.

tom on February 26, 2008 at 1:58 PM

I once heard that Ann Coulter dated Bill Maher - if this is correct [and I was shocked when I heard it], it tells you all you need to know about Ann Coulter.

Janet Reno was played for years on SNL by Will Farrell, and she was a good enough sport to make a cameo on the “Dance Party”.

My heavens. Did anybody see the skit on SNL this week about Grandpa needing his two grandsons to explain movies to him? That’s exactly what this Olbermann thing is:

“It’s ok, grandpa. You don’t need to get upset about this joke”.

MayBee on February 26, 2008 at 2:50 PM

I only liked SNL back in the 70s, when it had Belushi, Chase and Aykroyd, et al. And, even then, I only watched it when I was home from college.

The SNL of today is like comparing Jay Leno to Johnny Carson. I don’t bother watching it, now.

daileyck1 on February 26, 2008 at 4:27 PM

What a country where a guy who is as funny as a lame “knock-knock” joke, basically the “un-funniest guy in the world” to pirate one of moronic show segments, is the trying to be the moral judge of what is and isn’t funny. If pathetic one-liners and goofy background organ music on a nightly basis is what makes one an expert in the appropriateness of what’s “funny” or “not funny”, thank God I’m not an expert like Keith Olbermann is.

Planet Boulder on February 26, 2008 at 6:23 PM

Keith is as irrelevant as Rosie Odonnell.
